  • Owo killings: FG will not be deterred by attack – Aregbesola

Following the killing of worshipers at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State by gunmen, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has declared that the Federal Government will not be deterred in its effort to ensure adequate security of lives and property of Nigerians.

This was contained in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Sola Fasure, on Monday in Abuja, when he paid a condolence visit to Owo to sympathise with those who lost their loved ones in the incident.

He described the killing of the worshipers as devastating, senseless and an attempt to ignite ethnic violence.

Aregbesola said that the attack was to dampen the moral of the government and Owo community, pointing out that the criminals were going after soft targets because they have been weakened.

The minister, who conferred with the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin III, called for collaborative efforts between traditional institutions and law enforcement agencies in apprehending the fleeing criminals.

He said that every piece of information on the attack was very important as it would go a long way in assisting the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Newsmen reports that some gunmen had on Sunday, June 5, attacked St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, killing an unspecified number of worshippers.

Aregbesola visited the church alongside  Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

They were received by the Church’s officiating priest, Rev. Father Andrew Abayomi.

“It is worrisome that the attack happened in the South-West that has a measure of peace and tranquillity.

“While the motive of the perpetrators is yet to be ascertained,  there is no doubt that their cowardly act is intended to cause chaos and instil fear in the people, provoke bloody inter and intra ethnic crises.

“This could only have been intentioned to destabilise the state and plunge the nation into needless crisis.

“Their action is capable of widening the cracks in national harmony and peaceful co-existence of Nigerians,  stoking ethnic and religious crises and pitting our people against one another on the basis of primordial cleavages,” he said.

The minister appealed to them to reject the ugly and backward agenda and refuse to take any rash, inappropriate, primitive and precipitate action in the spirit of revenge.

“Our neighbours from other parts of the country with whom we have lived together in peace and harmony are not and cannot be the enemy.

“We must not be provoked to senselessly attack each other in reaction to the evil plot of some nihilists and criminals bent on plunging the nation into chaos and anarchy.

“Those who attacked innocent people worshipping in the house of God are the enemies. They are cowardly savages and animals, “he said.

Aregbesola assured that the entire security system of Nigeria was on the trail of the enemies that were responsible for the havoc.

“We are on their trail, they will be apprehended and made to pay dearly for this unprovoked attack,“ he said.

The minister said the security of lives and property of Nigerians remained the number one agenda of the Federal Government.

He said that the Federal Government was going to do everything possible to make the nation secure and peaceful.

Aregbesola said the Federal Government was outraged by the attack and would leave no stone unturned in getting to the root of it.

“We must remain irrepressible and undeterred. We should not give the enemies the benefit of rejoicing over us. The attack was meant to dampen our morale and plunge us to gloom and darkness.

“We must bounce back big time. We should rise to defend our land and take our historic position in leading the black race to fulfil its destiny,” he said.

  • Nigerian collects passport two weeks after calling out NIS for delay, extortion

A Nigerian man Fagemi Remi, unable to pay for his tuition abroad due to delays with getting his passport renewed, has now collected his travel document barely two weeks after he called out the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) FESTAC branch office for exceeding the average three weeks processing time for passport renewals/reissue.

Remi had applied online for his expired passport to be renewed and was captured on 17th February 2022 at the NIS FESTAC office in Lagos. Since then, efforts to collect the passport were unsuccessful, forcing him to call out the office on twitter on the 13th of May.

Providing an update on the situation on Wednesday 1st June, Remi said: “Although, I couldn’t meet up with a lot of deadlines, wasted time and money but in all thanks to @MinOfInteriorNG @raufaregbesola and the @nigimmigration for their intervention. I collected my passport yesterday 31st of May.”

“We would keep hope alive and continue pushing,” he added.

The NIS inability to meet its average processing time deadlines of six and three weeks for first time applications and renewals respectively, has ranged from shortage in passport booklets, to the backlog caused by the coronavirus lockdown and now recently, to challenges posed by linkage with the National Identity Management System (NIMC).

In addition, some NIS officials and agents have continued to fleece Nigerians, charging well above the official prices for both the 32-page and 64-page document.

For instance, while the official price for a 64-page Nigerian passport with 5 and 10 years validity period is N35, 000 and N70,000 respectively, applicants are charged between N100, 000 – N200, 000.

Similarly, while the new 32-page passport with a five-year validity period is officially N25,000, applicants for are charged between N40, 000 – N70, 000.

Remi told TNG that he paid N55, 000 for the renewal of his 32-page passport which is valid for five years.

The minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, had announced that under the new regime of passport processing and issuance which became effective June 1, 2021, applicants would have no basis for further communication with officials, upon the completion of their application process.

Aregbesola added that “special centres” would be established on a public-private partnership basis for expedited passport services. He said these centres would have nationwide spread.

However, this newspaper observed that passport processing remained largely the same and is characterized by delays and extortion at NIS offices particularly in Lagos and Abuja, as well as other branches across the country.

Passport applicants who do not have their National Identity Cards, cannot proceed for capturing and are compelled to part with more money to fast-track the process.

  • Aregbesola: Governance as festival of the mass – By Owei Lakemfa

Aregbesola: Governance as festival of the mass – By Owei Lakemfa

Witness to history. Animated discussions. Banters. Back slapping. Roaring laughter. Seeming riot, but orderly. Various groups, including the elderly and children. Then the crowds burst into songs and dances. They herald the arrival of the host. He is clad in white with a traditional white dog-eared cap.

He flashes his white teeth, raising a two-finger victory sign. Yes, he is the Governor of Osun State, or as his government prefers to call it, The State Of Osun. But the crowds, and protocols do not refer to him as His Excellency, he is simply Ogbeni, the Yoruba word for Mister.

As he walks in, it is announced that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola  has arrived. No, he is not a unique person, he says he is simply at that material time the elected leader of the state. Traditional drumming and songs take over. He breaks into a dance with the fine dance steps of an accomplished traditional dancer. The crowd breaks into a frenzy, dancing as if it were a traditional festival. People do not rush to shake his hands or press against him.

They see him quite often, sometimes in the streets. So he is like a familiar neighbour. As he dances, the edges of the crowd seems to be bursting with wild dances, including by street toughies called the ‘State Boys’.

Then he raises his hands to signal a stop. The drummers go silent, the songs taper off. The Master of Ceremony tries to take control. Then one of the market women breaks into a popular song. It is about the market women being the soul of society. The Governor’s mother, Madam  Saratu Aregbesola, known as ‘Iya Olobi” (Kolanut merchant) was a market woman. So the women have a pride of place in the state.

Aregbesola shakes his head as if resisting the temptation to stand up. But he has no choice, the crowds are getting back to their feet, the drums come back to life. He is again on his feet with traditional dance steps. The frenzy is on again.

Then after some songs, Aregbesola takes the microphone, faces the market women and sings: “She bi omo oloja niwa…”(Aren’t we the children of market people?) The rest of the crowd take over and the market women take centre stage as the most honoured group; they are the mothers who ensure natural and economic reproduction and production, take care of the family and make society run. While leading the vocals, Aregbesola seems transported to the past when his mother was his world.

Soon, the songs and dances come to an end. It is like the opening glee of the traditional Yoruba Alaarijo (Itinerant) drama groups who perform a musical (opening glee) before beginning their stage plays. Although it is a state function, but the sweating crowds are at ease. There are no security details pushing anybody around. It was like a family meeting or a communal reunion. In a sense, part of the attraction to state functions are these collective dances and songs which the famous Palm Wine Drinkers Club in Nigerian tertiary institutions would call “gyration”.

What the Aregbesola government did in the state was to incorporate the traditional system of Village Square meetings into governance, giving the people, a sense of collectivism, communality, consultation and mass participation in governance.

When the university system began in Nigeria in 1948, there was a sense of alienation between the ivory tower and the populace. There were strenuous efforts made to bridge the divide between ‘Gown and Town’. Part of the efforts were  building  cultural centres like the Mbari Mbayo in Oshogbo and the Ori Olokun in Ife.

However, the alienation between government and the people was far more pronounced. But what the Aregbesola government did was to put the people at the centre of governance and try to involve them by demystifying state events and turning them into festival-like ceremonies in which the governor and the governed, the high and the lowly  interact. With the dances and songs over, the National Anthem which promises that: “The labour of our heroes past, Shall never be in vain” is played.

Then the ‘State of Osun  Anthem’ in Yoruba is rendered. It is a patriotic and Pan-Africanist anthem which emphasises  hard work. In part, it tells the populace: “There is work to be done for our land, for our fatherland…Our belief is that everyone is born equal. We need to work, to work and work to create wealth…Yee children of Oodua, rise and take your rightful place. You are the light of the entire Black Race.”

The crowd recites this like a pledge. Then, Christian, Islamic and African Traditional Religion prayers are offered. The  Special Adviser to the Governor, Biyi Odunlade, then takes over, rendering enchanting panegyrics in Yoruba to which the crowds nod, snap fingers and concur as they soak in the poetic lyrics which sometimes take the form of chants.

Finally, the programme begins. When it is the turn of the governor to speak, he begins by breaking into songs, the dances resume, the drummers heighten the tempo and more bodies are soaked in sweat.

Finally, his speech, often laced with proverbs and wise sayings, is delivered. Quite often, the speech is interrupted by somebody from the audience breaking into a song and the crowds, as if on cue, join. On such occasions, the governor rocks from side to side, breaks into practised dance steps, then like a skilled conductor at the opera, weaves the songs to a stop and continues his address.

Sometimes, as the crowds quieten, he raises his own song and the dances resume. Speeches and programme over, the governor takes his leave, sent off with dances and songs. Various persons move to talk with him; he seems to have time for everyone. He rapidly gives appointments with aides taking note. Sometimes, it is a mother trying to cope with feeding her children. Such cases are quickly attended to.

On this particular day, November 26, 2018 as the programme reached a climax, the Ooni of Ife (The Cradle of  Yoruba Civilisation) Oba Adeyeye Enitan  Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, in fitting into the atmosphere, sprouts into instantaneous creativity. He teaches the crowd a song he crafted while sitting in the audience:

    Aregbe wa so Osun (thrice)

    Osi fara sinlu o.

    Se lama ranti O (thrice)

     Fun ise rere Ogbeni

      “Aregbe came to Osun.

    He served with commitment.

    We shall always remember

    The good works of Ogbeni”.

In  Osun State, a cultured, warm and hardworking people, blended with a charismatic and committed leader. Under Aregbesola, it was indeed, ‘governance unusual’.

This Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Aregbesola who has moved from Osun State to central politics as Interior Minister, turns 65.

  • FG activates passport tracking system

    FG activates passport tracking system

The Federal Government has activated a passport tracking system that allows applicants to monitor and know the status of their application online.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said this during the passing out parade of the 47th Basic Superintendent Course, 2021/2022 at Nigerian Immigration Service training school, Kano on Tuesday.

“One of the challenges of the NIS in recent past is in the issuance of the Nigerian passport. I am however, happy that we have overcome this and have now put in place a seamless passport administration system.

“We have also activated a tracking system that allows applicants to monitor and know the status of their application online,” he explained.

Represented by Commissioner, Civil Defense, Customs, Fire Service and Immigration Board, Emmanuel Bassey said before the end of the year, the service would have a fully digital application system that would remove any stress in the process.

“Let me reiterate my appeal to Nigerians to follow laid down regulations on passport application by going through the NIS online portal.

“Those who go through touts and unscrupulous NIS officials are undermining our effort to eliminate corruption and institute a stress-free application system.

“It is therefore, your patriotic duty to go through the official channel and avoid any practice that subverts the due process,” he noted.

The minister said that their engagement into the Nigeria Immigration Service reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening internal security of which our borders were an integral part of.

According to him, without secure borders, no security measure can work, external criminally minded persons can infiltrate the country and escape at will, if the borders are not well secured.

He said that diseases spread also from one country to the other through cross border movements.

Aregbesola urged the personnel to put the training and indoctrination to use in manning the boarder.

“You need to know what the organisation you have joined, the NIS, is all about.

As you have been taught, your main mission is to man the nation’s borders,” he added

He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his support to the ministry and by extension the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The minister also commended the Acting Controller General of the NIS for his professionalism, diligence, patriotism and the sterling way he had handled the affairs of the Service since his assumption of duty.

Earlier, the acting Comptroller General of the service, Idris Jere, advised the officers to always be guided by the rules governing the operations of the Service premised on honesty and professionalism.

Jere thanked the Minister of Interior and the Federal Government for the continuous support accorded the Service in its operations and manpower development activities.

Speaking also, the Commandant of the School, Comptroller Ado Rano, stated that the 548 cadets were taken through modern Border Security and Migration Management trainings, including physical drills to make them fit for the tasks ahead.

He stressed that members of the directing staff of the school demonstrated uncommon commitment during the course and thanked the CGI for the opportunity.

Heads of security agencies, traditional rulers and members of the public graced the occasion.

  • Rauf Aregbesola speaks on inmates swapping in Nigerian prisons

Rauf Aregbesola speaks on inmates swapping in Nigerian prisons

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, says it is impossible to swap inmates in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service with free citizens.

The minister said the on Friday in Abuja in his opening remarks at the third and fourth quarter 2021 performance review meeting of the ministry and its agencies.

The rumour mills had been replete with stories about how the Nigerian Correctional Service swaps inmates with free citizens.

“The allegations we hear are worrisome and most are false and almost impossible.

“There is a minimum setback between our facilities and human development areas, but if it’s not being enforced at some correctional services, we will ensure the enforcement,’’ he said.

The minister assured that no such swapping would be tolerated under his watch, stressing that government would further secure already properly-secured facilities of the Nigeria Correctional Services.

Speaking on current delays in the issuance of travel passports, Aregbesola said the integration of the National Identity Number (NIN) with names database was responsible.

He stressed that Nigerians must know that if the names on their passport bio data and NIN do not tally, it would be difficult to prove that such names identified one person.

“We must integrate NIN with passports and that’s why most of the delays are not caused by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

“For as long as your bio data integrates with your NIN which is in the database of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), then you have no issue.

“If the database of NIMC cannot accept your bio data, then the issuance of passport will be difficult,’’ he said.

Aregbesola also blamed periodic server failure at the NIMC for delay in confirmation of NIN and consequently the issuance of passports.

“Tally in arrangement of names is important as these little things conspire against speedy processing of passports.

“Most applicants do not care about these minute details even though we have digitalised the entire application process,” he said.

He said the ministry and the NIS were working to ensure that passports applicants were able to track their applications online.

Agencies of the ministry are the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Correctional Service, the Federal Fire Service and the NIS.

The minister urged the agencies to pay serious attention to public perception about them.

“What you get the public to see and believe is of great importance and if a user of your service is dissatisfied with your service, then act, appropriately,’’ Aregbesola Advised.

  • APC’s presidential nomination form fixed at N100m, making it N60m above PDP

APC’s presidential nomination form fixed at N100m, making it N60m above PDP

All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed N100 million for its presidential nomination form, making it N60 million above the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Its Governorship aspirants will pay N50million, senators N20 million, Representatives, N10 million and state house of assembly aspirants N2 million.

APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morgan, announced this on Wednesday at a briefing with reporters in Abuja.

Ahead of the party’s primary and general elections, several chieftains of the ruling party, including aides to President Muhammadu Buhari and serving governors, have indicated their interest to succeed him when his tenure ends in 2023.

They include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Governor Bola Tinubu, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, as well as ministers Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation) and Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment), among others.

Apart from the official declaration, all aspirants will now have to pay N100 million to secure a spot at the primary to elect the flagbearer of the APC later in May.

Before the briefing by the party’s spokesman, President Buhari presided over an extraordinary emergency meeting of the APC National Executive Committee.

Among those present were Professor Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; and Governor Fayemi of Ekiti, among other party leaders.

In preparation for the election, the NEC resolved to vest its powers on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party for the next 90 days. The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator Lawan and seconded by Speaker Gbajabiamila.

Before the decision was taken, APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, began by informing members that the NWC has begun the process of uniting aggrieved members and discussing the coming elections.

He encouraged them to uphold exemplary behaviours, saying the party’s underlying problem was a crisis fuelled by ego.

Adamu lamented that ego has widened the gap between the former and serving governors while the party is made to suffer.

According to him, there is no reason for the competition, and it is important for serving governors to work in harmonious and mutual respect with their predecessors, some of whom are now senators.

The national chairman promised that the NWC would deliver, particularly with a united front, and urged members to desist from using the media to settle grievances.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola declared the public holiday on behalf of the FG.

This was contained in a statement released by Dr. Shuaib Belgore, Permanent Secretary under the Ministry of Interior.

While declaring the public holiday, Aregbesola urged Christians to emulate the attributes of sacrifice, togetherness, forgiveness, kindness, love, peace and patience, which he said were the attributes and practices of Jesus Christ, as exemplified by His ministry on earth.

He, therefore, called on Christians and all Nigerians alike to use the occasion of this year’s Easter Celebration to pray for an end to all security challenges bedevilling every part of the country.

The Minister assured that the Federal Government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the recent attacks by undesirable elements on the highways, airport and the railway are timely brought to an end.

“Security is everybody’s business. I therefore urge Nigerians and foreigners resident in our country to display a high sense of citizenship and public spiritedness at this critical time in the history of our country, by supporting the efforts of all security agencies in bringing peace and security of lives and property of the citizenry,” he said.

Aregbesola once more assures Nigerians that the nation is inexorably on the path to greatness, despite the present challenges confronting her.

“There will surely be light at the end of the tunnel,” he stated.

Aregbesola’s APC faction in Osun vows not to quit party

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, loyal to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, says it has resolved not to quit the party.

The faction, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Abiodun Agboola, on Monday in Osogbo, said notwithstanding the extent of impunity within the party’s fold, they would remain operational members of the party.

Abiodun said members of the faction made the resolution to stay within the party during its stakeholders’ meeting.

He said it was jointly resolved at the meeting that all members of the party, who belonged to the Rasaq Salinsile-faction, should stay put in the party as genuine co-founders, co-developers and indeed co-sustainers of the party.

Abiodun said members of the faction would not yield to what it called “the mischief of some politically naive jobbers, whose understanding of politics did not go beyond butter-and- bread“.

“We urged good spirited Nigerians to ignore the Ileri Oluwa Group who are saying that we are planning to leave the party.

“Our tendency is still part and parcel of Osun APC.

“Our conviction to pursue a desired new order and restoration of rights, sanity and true progressive ideology became stronger with the conclusion of the party’s national convention a few days back.

“As authentic members of the APC who worked assiduously for the restoration of the progressive movement to the government in the State of Osun, we have not engaged in free window political transfers.

“lt will be absurd for us to leave the party for the unprincipled politicians who do not mind it sinking if it comes to that.

“Instead of leaving the party, we will continue to relentlessly and systematically pursue the court cases we have on our hands.

“We are sure of victory in the suits if they are devoid of vicious human interference”, he said.
