PDP crisis: House of Assembly revokes 868 plots of land owned by Dokpesi’s firm in Rivers

The Rivers State House of Assembly has revoked ownership of 868 plots of land occupied in Rivers State by Daar Communications, founded by Raymond Dokpesi.

Dokpesi, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is a firm supporter of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and Atiku had not been on good terms in events following the PDP presidential primary election.

The vast land housing all AIT operations in Rivers and the Southsouth is located along the NTA road in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The lawmakers took the decision following a report presented during plenary by the House Committee on Public Complains and Petitions, which investigated land acquisition petitions against Dokpesi’s company by four host communities.

The host communities that wrote the petitions are Ozuoba, Rumuosi, Rumuekini and Rumuokwashi, all in Obio/Akpor.

The committee’s chairman and chief whip of the 32-member state legislature cited wrongful acquisition of the land.

Speaker Ikuinyi Awaji-Ibani said Daar Communications Plc should open fresh negotiations with the state government on the property.

  • I contested governorship election 4 times – Atiku

I contested governorship election 4 times – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that he contested governorship election four different times before he finally won in 1999.

The former Vice President made this revelation on Tuesday while having an interaction with leaders of over 200 support groups across the country in Abuja.

Addressing the leaders of the groups, Atiku said that he was delighted that more young people were participating in politics today, adding that his dream is to mentor the young generation and handover his political structure to them.

He urged youths to be consistent and be courageous in pursuing their aspirations.

“It is encouraging that these days I see many young people come to me declaring intentions to run for various political positions, some state assemblies, some national assembly and even some aspiring to be governors.

“The beautiful thing is that this shows that our democracy is being strengthened. I also started early like many of you.

“I started in my late 30s. During our time, our direction was to fight the military and return the country to civil rule.

“In joining politics, you have to be focused, principled and courageous. For example, I contested for the governorship position four times before I was finally elected. That is politics for you. You have to be determined and be courageous,” he said.

Atiku expressed gratitude to leaders of the support groups for the roles that they played during the 2018/2019 election and commended the groups for their discipline and their determination to be better organised than the last outing.

“We are more organised now; it is a reflection of the fact that we are now more experienced and with experience comes more knowledge.

“What that means is that if there was any mistake that we made last time, we are in a better position to avoid such mistakes now”.

Earlier, the National Coordinator of Atiku Abubakar Technical Support Team, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, challenged the members of the group to tour round the country and meet all the stakeholders in the party.

He encouraged them to engage in all necessary lobbying to ensure that the aspiration of Atiku becomes a reality.

  • Wike and Dokpesi, needless fight when the nation needs help – By Samson Zogbobia

Wike and Dokpesi, needless fight when the nation needs help – By Samson Zogbobia

    By Samson Zogbobia

For most of last week one of the hottest issues in the social media was the tiff between Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Dr Raymond Dokpesi who is canvassing the opportunity and acceptance of former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to run for the highest office in the land, the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In reacting to something or a message that Dokpesi may have sent to somebody, which was not directly to him anyway, the governor literally flipped as he accused him of all sorts of things including being a mole in PDP working for the APC.

From this Governor who, to some people is quite a role model in some parts of the nation based on performance, one could expect a kind of get-down-on-the-street-and-fight approach, a bulekaja attitude; yet this action was too severe, too brash, uncouth and wreaking of uncivility. Being Governor has become a license for tantrums, all kinds of vituperative attitude unbefitting of an exalted office.

“I have some suspicion that people like Raymond Dokpesi are not sincere to the Peoples Democratic Party and I think , I am convinced that Raymond Dokpesi appears to be working for the APC,” Wike said. The news circuit had a field day, “Dokpesi is a mole in PDP.”

The elections are coming and the campaigns have started. In a country where politics is a major industry, it is crunch time, and anything or any information could be good for a fight. The unfortunate thing is that in the melee of that fight, the truth will become an unfortunate victim and the people who genuinely need a messiah to deliver them from the present rot will suffer some more.

But the PDP leaders need to be more strategic because after a presidential candidate has been picked, no matter the part of the country that is favoured for such choice, the leaders will still have to work together for the success of the party, and begin the long journey to reclaim the nation from ruin.

The governors from the various parties also need to understand this simple message that their position or viewpoint does not approximate everybody’s point of view. The beauty of democracy is its freedom of choice, plurality of ideas and opinions and opportunities for dissent. Nigerian governors really don’t get this message. So, they hold on to the state with iron grip, rule with iron fist, measure out generosity piecemeal in the name of democratic dividends, and bark at, or pursue anybody with enough balls to harbour contrary opinions or even thoughts. Wike’s response to some issues doesn’t particularly portray him as a leader with capacity for urbane discourse. The country needs people like him enjoying such leadership limelight to be more polished and restrained in approaching challenging issues.

History documents the political actions and inactions of our politicians for posterity. History also reminds us of the noble records of one the most astitute politicians of our time, the late sage, Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo, who once looked at the performance of the governors in his party, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), in the build up towards 1983 elections and proposed that the governors be given automatic tickets. Although a leader, his proposal was an unpleasant song to the ears of some of the members. Awo bowed to the opposition and hurriedly conveyed a national executive committee meeting of the party in Yola, old Gongola State, where his proposal was roundly rejected. He accepted his defeat with humility in spite of his immense power and influence. That was the great AWO. The powerful lesson from this narrative is that no matter how powerful you are as an individual at a moment in history, it is unwise to see yourself as the sole owner of a political party founded by a teeming population of both the living and the dead. Common sense dictates that Awo’s stance in the resolution of a controversy within his party is worthy of emulation. Humility elevates.

Now back to the issue of Dokpesi as a mole in his party, Governor Wike, more than any person should understand the trajectory of the broadcast mogul turn politician. Dokpesi is not afraid to canvass his opinions, pursue his dreams and stay faithfully with his convictions even when they hurt sometimes. He also has a rare cerebral mind with distinct analytical qualities with which he approaches every issue. Once his mind is made up there is very little anybody can do about it. His choices may not be the best, but they are his choices, and democracy gives him protection. A little throw back may provide the pathway to the present.

Dokpesi is never afraid of solo journeys or to take a stone flying towards him, like most of people of the South South extraction, Wike included. When he started the journey for the South South People’s Assembly (SSPA) in 2004, he was vilified and antagonised by the government at the federal but had the support of his people, including the governors and other politicians who edged him on. Within a few years the Assembly got the attention of a nation that couldn’t continue to ignore their demands. The story is told in his biography, The Handkerchief. Most of their demands couldn’t be resolved immediately but that region was to produce a President of the country.

At some other point, it was to take another solo decision against the man from his own zone, based on the information available to him. It was unheard off that the founder of the SSPA should ever campaign against his kinsman from being President. The kinsman won the elections. He was left to stay in the rain alone and everybody turned their back against him. He bore the shame and the humiliation and sometimes, the threats to his life. Dokpesi is never afraid to take decisions. But fate has a way of working miracles. Today that same kingsman remains one of his closest friends because the two of them may have realised their mistake, and or know the truth, because Dokpesi was one of the few who could stand by him when his own rain came pouring on him. Dokpesi is never afraid to take decisions.

Some decisions have harmed him and nearly ruined his business. Some people close to him have died; like Danladi Adamu, that was killed in broad daylight in June, 2002. The people thought they had killed Dokpesi and made the announcement immediately, but Danladi became victim of a conspiracy he would never know. Several attempts had been made on his life, and his broadcast conglomerate, under Daar Communications, had suffered more fire attacks than any other business in this country. Dokpesi takes decisions and wait for the consequences to come.

From the foregoing, it is plain to see that Dokpesi may have done his math as per the fairness of his political party to different sections of the country before undertaking to take the message of his preferred candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to members of his party in particular and Nigerians in general. He is always ready to canvass his ideas while waiting for others to defeat him with superior ideas. He is ready to take his math to the National convention of the PDP, and will readily accept the outcome based on his party’s choice. That is the spirit. Support your position with a little bit of intellection that can help turn the fortunes of the nation around for good.

  • Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike attacks Raymond Dokpesi

Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike attacks Raymond Dokpesi

Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike has accused Daar communications former chairman Raymond Dokpesi of being a mole in PDP. He said that Dokpesi has always served the interest of APC but just sitting down in PDP to disguise as a member.

He said it is not true that he led PDP governors to Europe to pick the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Dokpesi is alleged to have said Wike is spearheading a move to impose his candidates on the party ahead of the 2023 elections.

Dokpesi is a frontline supporter of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who is said to be nursing a presidential ambition.

In a statement on Thursday, Kelvin Ebiri, media aide to Wike, quoted the governor as saying PDP governors got text messages and calls that the former Daar chairman said they embarked on a weeklong trip to Europe.

Wike said he is convinced that Dokpesi is working for the APC.

“I have always said to people in PDP, nobody should cause a division among the governors. We are trying as much as we can to build the party back and see that in 2023 PDP takes over governance,” he said.

“I have some suspicion that people like Raymond Dokpesi are not really sincere to the Peoples Democratic Party and I think , I’m convinced that Raymond Dokpesi appears to be working for APC.

“I don’t understand where Raymond Dokpesi gets this information, this rumour that governors travelled to Europe to decide who will be the presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate of PDP. I wonder why governors will travel to Europe to make such a decision.

“I have told Raymond Dokpesi that there is nothing wrong with you preaching for the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri of Adamawa, a very experienced man, an intelligent man, a strategist. But don’t destroy other people because of this. Because when you destroy them it will be difficult for the PDP to win the election in 2023.”

The governor said if Atiku wins the PDP presidential ticket, the governors will support him.

He said: “We supported Atiku Abubakar when he won (PDP presidential ticket), and even if he wins now, the governors will rally round him, but when you destroy the governors and bring confusion, how will it work?”

2023: If I want to contest, nobody can stop me – Wike

…says Amaechi emptied Rivers Govt House, even doorbell

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said nobody can stop him if he wants to contest the 2023 presidential election.

Governor Wike disclosed this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt during a stakeholders meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike told the gathering that there was no amount of money that anybody can bring that can sway the position of the PDP.

“Forget about the propaganda and posters you’re seeing on social media. I have not said that I want to run for any office and even if I want to run, nobody can stop me.

“I have not discussed being vice to anybody and nobody is vice to me. All those things are speculations and imaginations of those who are afraid of us,” Wike said.

The Rivers State Governor did not spare his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi as he claimed he emptied the Rivers State Government House, including doorbells.

Wike revealed that he had to buy everything afresh when he got to Rivers State Government House.

“They left with everything and nothing was left behind and I had to replace them all. As we speak now I am renovating the place for somebody to occupy in May next year,” he said.

The Rivers State Governor also condemned media business mogul, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi for going above his threshold for zoning the presidential slot.

He said: “I have not seen that kind of politics before, doing the job of the party by zoning position”.

  • 2023: Atiku will restructure Nigeria properly if elected president – Dokpesi

2023: Atiku will restructure Nigeria properly if elected president – Dokpesi

Chief Raymond Dokpesi, chairman, African Independent Television (AIT), says that Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has promised to properly restructure Nigeria, if elected president in 2023.

He said that proper restructuring would guarantee enduring peace and development of the country.

Dokpesi who is the chairman, Technical Committee for the actualisation of Alhaji Abubakar Atiku’s 2023 presidential ambition, stated this on Thursday, in Abakaliki, while addressing members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The media mogul, who took members of the committee on a consultation visit to the state, noted that Nigeria was at a political cross road and that proper restructuring was the only panacea to the country’s political, social and economic woes.

He said that the current agitation by youths in the South-East, under the platform of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other security challenges, would be laid to rest once the country was properly restructured.

“The exclusion of the South-East in key political appointments and perceived marginalisation of the zone by the present administration had led to protests by youths, under the umbrella of IPOB.

“IPOB’s struggle is to ensure that the people of the South-East remain relevant and I, therefore, support the struggle of IPOB.

“What IPOB is asking is for the proper restructuring of the country; a proper balancing of the country; my best friends are from the zone and none of them has asked for a separate country.

“There is no part of the country you will go to that you will not find an Igbo man, no where. In the most remote towns and villages in Nigeria, you will find Igbos there.

“There can be no other demonstration of unity that can be found outside this, hence the need to restructure the country to enhance justice and equity,” Dokpesi said.

He noted that the Constitutional Review Conference of 2014 organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan came up with far reaching recommendations that would have addressed the country’s problems.

“The 2014 Constitution review, which I was privileged to be a member, made over 600 recommendations aimed at repositioning the country, but unfortunately, the APC government could not implement the recommendations.

“But, Atiku has promised to continue from where Jonathan stopped to restructure the country and nobody, no presidential aspirant has made such promise,” he added.

He called on the party faithful to support the presidential ambition of the ‘Waziri’ Adamawa to emerge PDP presidential flagbearer in the 2023 election, adding that the former Vice President was the most qualified among all other aspirants.

Chief Tochukwu Okorie, PDP state chairman, commended the team for the visit and assured that the party in the state was open to receive aspirants from across the country willing to consult members of the party in Ebonyi.

He said that the party was the only political party that had all it required to rescue Nigeria and reposition its economy.

“The solution that Nigeria needs today is located in PDP and our party parades most of the eminently qualified persons to contest the 2023 presidential race.

“We are in this together. The Nigeria project is Ebonyi project and PDP would work to achieve the best for Nigeria,” Okorie said.

  • Court orders EFCC to unfreeze Dokpesi’s account

Court orders EFCC to unfreeze Dokpesi’s account

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho on Tuesday in Abuja, issued an order unfreezing the bank account of the Chairman of Daar Communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi.

Justice Tsoho gave the order while delivering a ruling on Dokpesi’s application argued by Mr Kanu Agabi, SAN.

The judge ordered that the account domiciled at First Bank be immediately ‘unfrozen’ since the criminal charges which precipitated the restriction on the account had been dismissed and Dokpesi discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal.

The judge said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) had no basis to put a post no debit order on the account in view of the subsisting and valid judgment of the Court of Appeal.

He held that there was no application by the EFCC for stay of execution of the appellate court’s judgment which quashed the criminal charges against Dokpesi.

Justice Tsoho said that in the absence of a stay of execution, the court was bound by law to recognise the judgment of the appellate court.

He ordered that the freeze order and post no debit on the account be immediately removed in compliance with the appellate court’s judgment.

Ruling on the claim by the EFCC that it had appealed the appellate court’s decision at the Supreme Court, the judge held that the notice of appeal filed at the apex court could not in law stay the execution of the subsisting judgment .

He added that the anti-graft agency ought to have obtained a stay of execution of the judgment.

He further ordered that all documents seized from Dokpesi should be immediately returned to him.

Agabi, while making arguments in support of the application, prayed the court to issue an order unfreezing Dokpesi’s bank account frozen on the strength of the alleged N2.1 billion fraud charge against him.

The senior lawyer had submitted that the criminal charges in respect of N2.1 billion had since been dismissed by the Court of Appeal Abuja division but the EFCC wanted to continue to hold his client in bondage.

Agabi had further argued that the charge which led to freezing of the account no longer existed following the decision of the appellate court on the matter.

He had tendered two judgements of the Court of Appeal to establish his claim that the criminal charges against Dokpesi had been quashed.

He held that until the judgments were set aside the EFCC could not continue to freeze his client’s account.

However, EFCC counsel Mr Oluwaleke Atolagbe had opposed the application on the grounds that the anti- graft agency had already filled a notice of appeal against the appellate court’s judgment at the apex court.

Atolagbe had urged the court not to unfreeze the account yet until the final decision of the Supreme Court in the matter adding that the N2.1 billion logged in the frozen account formed the basis of the charge.

He also opposed to the request for the release of Dokpesi’s document in possession of EFCC on the grounds that no specific document was mentioned in the request.

On April 1, a three-member panel of the Appeal Court in a unanimous judgment freed Dokpesi from the charges after it held that the prosecution failed to establish the ingredients of the charge. The EFCC had in 2015 dragged Dokpesi to court accusing him and his company of illegally receiving funds considered as proceeds of crimes from a former National Security Adviser (NSA), rtd Col. Sambo Dasuki.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and went further to file a no-case submission after the prosecution closed its case in November 2018 after calling 14 witnesses.

However, the trial judge, Justice Tsoho, rejected the no-case submission and ordered Dokpesi and his firm to enter their defence.

Not satisfied, the defendants then approached the Court of Appeal, with a request to nullify the decision and free him from the charges on the grounds that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them.

In the unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Elfreda Williams-Dawodu, the appellate court agreed with the appellants that the case of the respondents lacked merit having “failed woefully to establish a prima facie case against the appellant”.

According to the judgment, for any case to be established against the defendants, it is necessary to first prove the ingredients of offence in the predicate offences in counts 1 to 4 of the seven-count charge which bordered on criminal breach of trust, division of funds, money laundering and corruption.

The court further held that EFCC failed to prove that the N2.1 billion allegedly received by the appellant was a proceed of breech of trust and accordingly set aside the decision of the lower court which held that the appellants had a case to answer.

“No case was made against the appellant in counts 1, 2, 3 and 4 to warrant his being called upon to open his defence.

“There is no possibility that the appellant can be convicted because the evidence are manifestly unreliable.

“I am of the view that irrespective of the ingredients stated earlier, and those by the appellant and first respondent respectively, prior proof or establishment of the predicate offences in count 1,2,3 and 4 of the amended charge is sine qua non to the proof of the offences of money laundering specified in the said counts.
