Bayern Munich extend Bundesliga lead to 9 points after beating RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich had to fight hard for a 3-2 win against RB Leipzig on Saturday to extend their 2021/2022 Bundesliga lead over Borussia Dortmund to nine points.

Thomas Müller broke the deadlock in the Allianz Arena in the 12th minute, taking the rebound after goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi saved Robert Lewandowski’s effort.

However, it did not take RB Leipzig too long to level things up with Portuguese striker André Silva.

Müller hit the net again, but his goal was disallowed after video check.

Nevertheless, Bayern Munich were ahead before the break, thanks to a header by top goalscorer Lewandowski.

Early into the second half, RB Leipzig equalised again as Christopher Nkunku was not intimidated when he got face-to-face with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

But the visitors were unlucky when Josko Gvardiol turned a cross from Serge Gnabry into an own goal, sealing the victory for Bayern Munich.

“We made too many mistakes in the build-up. You can’t make mistakes against a team like Bayern Munich,” RB Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said.

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said his side secured a “beautiful win,” while Müller said they deserved the victory in spite of an equal game.

“Both teams showed an attractive game, both tried to be offensive, but I will say we deserved to win,” Müller said.

Earlier on Saturday, Eintracht Frankfurt were the winners of a thrilling game against VfB Stuttgart, taking home three points after a 3-2 triumph.

Evan Ndicka steered the ball into the net early in the game, but Waldemar Anton equalised for VfB Stuttgart before the break.

A stunner from Ajdin Hrustic gave Eintracht Frankfurt the advantage once again, until Sasa Kalajdzic put the hosts back in the game.

Eintracht Frankfurt, however, had the last say after Hrustic scored the winner in the 77th minute.

Cologne are dreaming about the UEFA Champions League after a 1-0 win over Freiburg.

It was Anthony Modeste’s powerful left-footed shot that moved them up to sixth in the standings.

Borussia Mönchengladbach were held at Arminia Bielefeld and did not improve their situation, remaining 12th in the standings after a 1-1 draw.

This is the first Gladbach game in over two decades without Max Eberl as their sporting director.

He stepped down from his position last week and some fans brought “Thank you, Max” banners to the stadium.

Augsburg left the relegation zone with an important 2-0 victory against Union Berlin.

A big mistake from the goalkeeper made it easy for Michael Gregoritsch to open the scoring and a stunner from Andre Hahn closed the case for the Bavarian team.

Elsewhere, Mainz beat Hoffenheim 2-0 with Jae-sung Lee and Moussa Niakhaté scoring within the last 10 minutes.

On Sunday, title contenders Borussia Dortmund welcome Bayer Leverkusen, while Wolfsburg host Greuther Fürth.

Hertha Berlin and VfL Bochum had played out a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Karim Adeyemi reveals dream transfer destination

Liverpool target Karim Adeyemi admits he has ambitions beyond Anfield.

The RB Salzburg striker is being watched by Liverpool and Barcelona. But there’s another European giant the Germany international would favour should they come calling.

Despite being released by Bayern Munich as a junior, Adeyemi says he’d be happy to return.

Adeyemi told Marca: “If they (Bayern Munich) were to place a bid, I think I would choose that path.

“I want to show them what I can do, who I am and that it was a mistake to let me go. That motivates me.”

My family and I didn’t deserve Barca abuse – Ilaix

Ilaix Moriba has hit out at the abuse he has copped after leaving Barcelona for RB Leipzig.

After failing to agree a new contract he joined RB Leipzig for a fee of 16 million euros.

“The last few months have been the hardest of my life, we [my family] have received abusive messages but we have been able to get over it to be here today,” Moriba explained in his first interview since leaving Barcelona.

    “I don’t deserve these messages.”

Many have made Ilaix Moriba out to be the perpetrator of this move and having an open desire to leave the club. Leipzig’s new-signing then spoke of the difficulty he had in maintaining composure with all of the noise going on around him.

“They [people at the club] have said many things that are not true and we have had to keep tight-lipped because of the respect that we have for Barcelona,” the youngster explained.

“The things that they have said in the press have not been fair.”

During his short time at the Camp Nou, Ilaix Moriba looked to be following the same path set by Ansu Fati and more recently Pedri, who have both made huge impacts on the Barcelona first team despite their young age.

“I have improved at Barcelona with the support of the fans, but over the past few months they have not known how to behave,” Moriba continued.

“I am not going to judge the whole fanbase based off of these few people. I will always have Barcelona in my heart, it has been a complicated few months, but it has passed and I wish the best for the club, especially to Ansu, as I have seen that they have given him the No.10 shirt and he’s the most suitable one to wear it, I wish him the best.”

Barca has special place in my heart – RB Leipzig player

RB Leipzig wing-back Dani Olmo says he’ll always be grateful to formative club Barcelona.

Olmo left Barca at 16 for Dinamo Zagreb before leaving in January 2020 for RBL.

He told the Players’ Tribune, “Barça will always have a special place in my heart.

“It was a privilege to have played there. It is a point of reference for the rest of the football world and any child would give anything to play there, where so many greats have come and learned the trade.”

“Nobody leaves Barcelona for Croatia. Nobody. It just isn’t done. But I did. As soon as my father told me about the offer, I said, ‘I’m leaving’. As simple as that. I needed to get out of my comfort zone, and this felt like the natural step, even if I was only 16 years old.”

RB Leipzig defender passes Liverpool medical

RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate has already passed a Liverpool medical, it has been revealed.

The Merseyside club are said to be in advanced talks with Konate’s representatives over the possibility of a summer switch.

RMC says Konate has already passed a medical in Paris.

It is also claimed that the France under-21 international has spoken to ‘several clubs’, but Liverpool appear to be in pole position to snap up his signature.

Konate was left as an unused substitute for both legs of Leipzig’s Champions League round of 16 clash with Liverpool earlier this month.

I left PSG after Tuchel arrival – RB Leipzig winger

RB Leipzig winger Christopher Nkunku says he left PSG because of Thomas Tuchel.

Nkunku admits he didn’t see eye to eye with the now Chelsea manager.

He recalled to Canal+: “Why did I leave PSG? The arrival of (Thomas) Tuchel made me think.

“The fact of starting a season without really knowing what role you are going to have is quite complicated.

“There comes a time when you come to the end of your contract and you have one year left, either you extend or you leave, I made the choice to simply leave.”

  • Guardiola killed my self-confidence, says RB Leipzig defender

Guardiola killed my self-confidence, says RB Leipzig defender

Angelino says Pep Guardiola did not trust him at Manchester City and killed his confidence, before he completed a permanent move to RB Leipzig.

The left-back joined City aged 16 but after some loan spells and a brief move to PSV Eindhoven decided to move on.

The Spaniard is now playing regularly and thriving under Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, who he says had the “courage” to use him from the start.

“I had a rest when I was with Pep for six months, that was enough,” he said.

“I don’t want it again. That’s why I want to be on the pitch. I don’t like being out. I am thankful that I get to play most of the time. I had enough holidays.”

The 24-year-old was part of the RB Leipzig side who reached the Champions League semi-finals last year and returned on loan to the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Leipzig, who sit second in the table behind Bayern Munich, then exercised a clause in the deal to make his move permanent last week.

Asked about Guardiola and Nagelsmann, he said: “They both like to play with the ball, get the ball quick, there is one thing that is a big difference – one gave me the confidence and played me and the other didn’t.

“So I am thankful to Julian for the trust and sometimes you need, I don’t want to use a bad word, you need courage to put a player and he did from the first game.”

Angelino was on City’s books for more than four years before being sold to PSV in 2018, with the Premier League club then repurchasing the left-sided player the following season.

He played 12 times in all competitions before first being allowed to join Leizpig on loan in January 2020, but does not believe he got a fair chance under Guardiola.

“It killed me,” said Angelino. “The confidence was everything, when you don’t have the trust of a coach it is everything.

“I was judged for pre-season, two games, and then I didn’t get my chance until a few months. It is hard to play one game every two months so I am just happy that happened so I could come here and meet Julian and everyone here.

“It was a 50/50 experience. On one side I really learned a lot from Pep, he improved me as a player on the pitch and I have to be thankful also for the experience.

“On the other side I didn’t play as much as I wanted to or I deserved.”

  • RB Leipzig cut Bayern Munich’s lead to 2 points

RB Leipzig cut Bayern Munich’s lead to 2 points

RB Leipzig secured an important 3-0 win at Hertha Berlin to move within two points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Also, an Edmond Tapsoba goal deep into stoppage-time secured Bayer Leverkusen a point with a 1-1 draw at Augsburg.

In the late Sunday clash, Hoffenheim put up a stunning performance to beat Werder Bremen 4-0.

Leipzig opened the scoring in the first half just when Hertha Berlin seemed quite dangerous.

Sabtizer’s spectacular effort from outside of the penalty box stunned goalkeeper Rune Jarstein, who was left helpless.

Hertha Berlin had chances to equalise but goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi saved Matheus Cunha’s shot early in the second half.

But RB Leipzig avoided any extra drama as Nordi Mukiele fired the ball into the net.

There was a video assistant referee (VAR) review but the goal stood.

With six minutes left on the clock Willi Orban headed in a third after an assist from Sabitzer to clinch the three points in Berlin.

The result helped them to capitalise on Bayern Munich’s 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

“Very important three points,” Sabtizer said. “If we focus on our game, it [title race] will be exciting until the end. It doesn’t help to talk about it [title]. We have to do something.”

While RB Leipzig can dream with the trophy, Hertha Berlin have relegation nightmares.

They stay out of the danger zone but tied on 18 points with Arminia Bielefeld, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.

“We had our goal chances to take the lead, to tie. At the end you look at the result, it doesn’t make us look good,” Hertha Berlin coach Pal Dardai said.

“It’s psychologically difficult for the boys, defeat after defeat. The passion was there, but you need to score goals,” he added.

Diadie Samassekou’s through ball found Ihlas Bebou running towards the penalty box, and he shot past goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka to open the scoring for Hoffenheim.

At first the goal was disallowed for offside, but a VAR check found he was onside and the opener counted.

Just before the break, Christoph Baumgartner took advantage of a poor clearance to play a one-two with Munas Dabbur and double Hoffenheim’s lead.

Four minutes into the second half Dabbur controlled the ball before knocking it into the net for a third, and a last act by Georginio Rutter sealed the win.

“We have invested a lot and things worked really well,” Bebou said after the game. “I thought I was offside, but now we know the play goes until the end and can be reviewed.”

Hoffenheim leapfrogged Werder Bremen in the standings and are now 11th, eight points off the relegation zone.

Werder Bremen dropped to 12th, five points off the danger.

Before the game, Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt said his situation at the club has not changed after Marco Rose decided to leave Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Rose will take the head coach position at Borussia Dortmund in the summer and Kohfeldt has been linked to a possible Gladbach move.

“Nothing changes directly for me just because a coach somewhere else decided to change clubs,” Kohfeldt said.

“I really, really like being Werder Bremen coach. We have such a strong bond here.

“The players, Frank Baumman [managing director] and I, we’ve known each other for so long and work together in a spirit of trust. There’s nothing to talk about,” he added.

After the defeat, Kohfeldt said Werder Bremen had a “terrible day.”

Augsburg’s opener came from Florian Niederlechner in the fifth minute but not without a big help and a bizarre mistake by back-up goalkeeper Niklas Lomb.

He was deputising for injured first-choice Lukas Hradecky.

Tim Fosu-Mensah was able to stop Augsburg’s counter-attack by passing the ball to Lomb.

But the goalkeeper, who had his first Bundesliga start on Sunday, touched the ball and nudged it with his standing foot.

Niederlechner was waiting and simply tapped into the goal.

But when Augsburg were about to celebrate a very important win in the fight against relegation, they were stunned by Tapsoba with the last kick of the game.

The defender not only snatched a point for Bayer Leverkusen but also extended the club’s unbeaten run against Augsburg to 20 matches

“It’s very, very bitter, I must be honest. Very difficult,” Augsburg defender Felix Uduokhai said. “It hurts a lot but we must keep it together.”

On the Bayer Leverkusen side, Sven Bender was happy with the point: “I was happy at the end. The early setback didn’t make things easy,” he said.

With the draw, Augsburg remain 13th, five points away from the relegation play-off spot.

Bayer Leverkusen are fifth and five points off the UEFA Champions league qualification zone.

  • Why I turned down Real Madrid – RB Leipzig coach

Why I turned down Real Madrid – RB Leipzig coach

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann has explained turning down Real Madrid earlier in his career.

Nagelsmann admits Real Madrid contact about taking him to Spain, but he says he felt it wasn’t the right time to make such a move.

“It’s not that I had a contract in front of me ready to sign back then,” he recalled to BILD.

“I said it didn’t make sense at the time. There were only three weeks left until the start of the preseason and I didn’t know any Spanish. It wouldn’t have been consistent, neither with my own demand, nor with that of Real.

“It is always convenient to spend several seasons in a club to learn.”

  • Man Utd knocked out of Champions League

Man Utd knocked out of Champions League

Manchester United’s season suffered a huge blow as a defeat at German side RB Leipzig knocked them out of the Champions League.

Needing just a draw to progress to the last 16, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side conceded twice inside 13 minutes to leave their hopes in tatters before RB Leipzig added what ultimately turned out to be the killer third with 20 minutes left.

United staged their now customary second-half fightback thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty and Harry Maguire header, but ultimately fell short.

To rub salt in the wound, the goalscorer of the first and supplier of the second, Angelino, is currently on loan in Germany from Manchester City.

His superb low shot into the far corner after just two minutes was followed soon after by a chipped cross to the back post, where Amadou Haidara ghosted in to volley past David de Gea.

It could have been even worse, with the home side seeing a third goal ruled out for offside against Willi Orban on the half-hour.

United were better in the second half and struck the crossbar through a Fernandes free-kick but shortly after substitute Justin Kluivert chipped in following some shoddy defensive play from Maguire and De Gea.

Fernandes’ penalty – awarded for a foul on Mason Greenwood by Ibrahima Konate – gave them a slim chance, which Paul Pogba made real with a back-post header into the net, but the Germans held on.

Pogba had started on the bench and came on with 30 minutes to go, a day after his agent Mino Raiola declared that the midfielder was “unhappy” at the club and “has to leave” in the next transfer window.

It is small solace for United that they now drop into the Europa League – a competition they won in 2017.

RB Leipzig advance to the Champions League last 16 having reached the last four in 2019-20.
