40 years later, Pastor Adeboye confesses: I said ‘God forbid’ when RCCG founder told me I’ll be General Overseer

General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, is a definition of grace which has sustained him for 78 years as a human and 40 years as a pastor.

As the respected cleric celebrated his 40th anniversary as head of one of the biggest churches in the world on Thursday, January 21, he recalled some old memories.

In a video interview, Adeboye admitted that when he was told he would become the General Overseer by the late founder of RCCG, Reverend (Pa) Josiah Akindayomi, he said ‘God forbid.’

He explained: “I prefer the quiet life and I still prefer the quiet life. The quiet life as far as I am concerned is the sweetest and I knew then that becoming the general overseer will expose me a lot. If you like a quiet life, you don’t want to head an international organisation and my father in the Lord told me clearly that I would travel all over the world. I told him I was willing to serve as a pastor under a General Overseer and I will do my best but apparently what is written is written. So here we are.”

According to him, the first years as a young GO were full of challenges from senior pastors who were there before he became born again and probably saw me as an upstart.

“The church was started in 1953, I joined the church in 1973. Many of these pastors were my teachers, workers in training and baptismal classes. So just coming from nowhere and being catapulted above them all, one could understand that it was not too pleasant. Initially, the cooperation was not too robust,” he explained.

“The initial mistake I made as GO maybe was that I trusted too much. It took me some time to learn that only God could be trusted and that led to some mistakes. I would ask somebody to go do something, go to sleep believing the thing was done. Only to wake up and discover that the person had not moved. The only friend you can trust 100 per cent is God.”

Born in Osun State to very humble parents, Adeboye completed his first degree at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics in 1967. The same year, he married Foluke Adenike and they are blessed with four children – Adeolu, Bolu, Dare and Leke.

Adeboye clocks 40 years as RCCG General Overseer

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Thursday, clocked 40 years as the church head.

Adeboye who was ordained a pastor of the church in 1977, became general overseer in 1981.

He succeeded the late Papa Akindayomi as a young university lecturer.

He was formerly a mathematics professor at the University of Lagos.

He started working with the founder of RCCG by translating his sermons from Yoruba to the English language.

Celebrating him, his son Leke Adeboye shared a photo on Instagram with the inscription “Celebrating 40 years at the top”.

Meanwhile, members and non-members of the church have flocked the respected preacher’s social media pages to congratulate him on the milestone.

Despite becoming the church’s leader at a time it was not well known, Adeboye, 78, has expanded it to about 200 countries, including more than 14 million branches in Nigeria.

RCCG rejigs, announces new ‘continental appointments’, scraps two positions [Full list]

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has made some strategic appointments tagged ‘continental appointments’.

It is not clear what informed the new appointments. But it may not be unconnected with the need for the church to tackle certain administrative gaps due to its expansion. Nothing was said of the General Overseer of the Church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye in the list of continental appointments.

When I will be ready to die – Pastor Adeboye

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has said he will celebrate his 90th birthday before he will begin to get ready to go.

Pastor Adeboye, who will become 90 years in the year 2033, stressed that he is not dying yet unless Jesus Christ returned before he turned 90 years of age.

Fondly referred to as Daddy GO, Pastor Adeboye stated this during a special service of the RCCG on Sunday.

“I am not going to die young. Some people were laughing when they heard me say that don’t worry yourselves celebrating any birthday for me now. Wait till I am 90; then we will celebrate for a whole month.

“They think I am joking. Unless the Lord returns before then, at the age of 90, I am going to celebrate for a whole month.

“There will be a day for each fellow. A day for America, a day for Australia, a day for pastors, a day for the choir, a day for the people in the legal department, a day for heads of states, etc.

“At the age of 90, after that celebration, then I can begin to get ready to go. But, that I am going to die soon, that’s a lie,” Pastor Adeboye said.

  • Why I cancelled RCCG’s crossover service – Pastor Adeboye

Why I cancelled RCCG’s crossover service – Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, said he cancelled his church’s crossover service which was scheduled for December 31, 2020, so as to teach his congregation a lesson on submission.

The Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had issued a curfew between 12am and 4am as part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

As a result, the Christian Association of Nigeria had also directed churches to close their crossover service before 11pm so that worshippers could return home before the curfew period.

The directive meant that the crossover services which customarily start a few hours before 12am and end some minutes past 12am of January 1 won’t hold.

It was earlier reported that some mega churches subsequently adjusted or cancelled physical crossover services and opted for the virtual experience.

Delivering a sermon at his church’s first thanksgiving service of the year 2021 themed, ‘Divine Lifting’, Adeboye said he cancelled the church’s physical crossover service to teach a lesson in submission.

He said, “I know some of you have been asking me ‘Daddy, why did you cancel the crossover service? We were getting ready to come to the camp to sing and dance and jump’. I will tell you why.

“Reason number one, I saw the opportunity to teach you another lesson on submission. When you obey in agreement with what your boss says, that is called cooperation. When your boss asks you to do something and you do it, even though you do not agree with him, it is called submission. Submission is when you obey even when you don’t agree.

“Some said by 10pm you should close. Another one said by 11pm you should close. I said, okay, let’s agree and close in our home. So, I said we’ll stay in our house and crossover at 12 midnight.”

Commending the government and its officials, Adeboye said they “are doing a very good job, they are trying their best. When you ask a man to do a job only God can do, don’t blame him if he makes mistakes. They are trying and doing their very best, humanly speaking, to protect us.”

    RCCG cancels crossover service nationwide

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has cancelled New Year crossover service in its churches nationwide.

This is coming after the Christian leadership in the country directed worship centres to respect governments’ directives on New Year crossover services.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Samson Ayokunle, said CAN understand the unfortunate state the coronavirus pandemic has put everybody worldwide.

However, RCCG instructed members to connect with the virtual service of the church.

It stated further that the January Holy Ghost Service (the first of the year 2021) taking place on Friday, January 8, will be held virtually.

Members were advised to tune in to Dove television and other electronic media to link up with the General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s End of Year message and other aspects of the crossover programme.

General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has condemned the shooting of #EndSARS protesters in Lekki by soldiers, calling on the Federal Government to immediately investigate the tragic event.

Adeboye, in a statement on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday said it was sad that the Nigerian military used brute force on unarmed Nigerian youths.

He said he was confounded that prior to the sad events at the Lekki Toll Gate, the Nigerian Police failed to arrest the weapon-bearing hoodlums who were attacking the well-organized and non-violent #EndSARS protesters.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms, attacks launched by the Nigerian military on unarmed young people, who have been peacefully protesting police brutality over the last 12 days as #EndSARS protests.

“I am confounded that prior to the sad events at the #LekkiTollGate, the Nigerian Police failed to arrest the weapon-bearing hoodlums who were attacking the well-organized and non-violent #EndSARS protesters,” he said.

The man of God stated that the condemnable actions of the military risked driving the agitations of the young people underground, thereby making the situation unmanageable.

“I call on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the tragic events at Lekki and other parts of the country, give justice to all victims even as it engages the #EndSARS protesters to reach a common agreement to end police brutality.

“I am also appealing to the youths to allow peace reign & stop any form of action that would give the Military any other form of excuse to attack. May the peace of God come upon our nation, now more than ever in JESUS name (Amen),” Adeboye sai
