Jamie Carragher tips Liverpool to win Champions League trophy

Former England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, has predicted this season’s UEFA Champions League finalist.

The Sky sports pundit said this year’s Champions League final will be played between his former team Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Carragher has also backed the Reds to go all the way and win the trophy.

Jurgen Klopp’s men beat Villarreal 2-0 in their semi-final first leg on Wednesday night with the reverse fixture holding next week Tuesday in Spain

Carragher said “I think Liverpool will win the Champions League. The league I’m not so sure, Manchester City have a slight advantage in that if they win all their games they’ve won the league.

“The Champions League, it feels like it’s Liverpool’s competition and they’ve got one foot in the final and I don’t think anyone else can say that. I think Madrid will go through. When you miss that many chances in the first leg you have got a massive problem. It’s a big standout game.”

UCL: Benzema reveals why he opted for a Panenka penalty

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has explained why he opted for a Panenka penalty despite trailing by 2 goal margin.

Man City had led 4-2 before before Aymeric Laporte was penalized for handling the ball in the box 18 area.

A breathtaking game, packed with chances and moments of individual brilliance, was a treat for those watching but left City, who had the better of the game, with the slenderest of leads to defend at the Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday.

At the post match conference Benzema revealed that he’s had it in mind that if he doesn’t play penalties he can never miss one.

Benzema said: “I always have it in my head that if you don’t take a penalty, you will never miss a penalty. That’s mental confidence and that’s all. I have a lot of confidence in myself… so I do it and it turns out well.

His boss Carlo Ancelotti said, “I think he changed because the last two penalties were not good. He tried in training, I didn’t know how he would shoot. He chose this [Panenka] and he did really well, showing strong personality and character. It’s not easy in the semi-final of the Champions League to shoot a penalty like this.”

The second leg of the semi-final encounter holds next week Wednesday at the Bernabeu in Spain. Man City go into the match with 4-3 advantage.

Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 in UEFA Champions League semi-final thriller

Manchester City were two goals up on three occasions before beating Real Madrid 4-3 in a UEFA Champions League thriller on Tuesday, a result which leaves the tie wide open.

Karim Benzema kept Real Madrid’s chances intact as the France striker scored a brace in his 600th game for the Spanish league leaders for a tournament-leading tally of 14.

Last year’s finalists Manchester City led 2-0 after 11 minutes as Kevin de Bruyne nodded home in the second minute, before setting up Gabriel Jesus in this semi-final first leg tie.

Benzema got Real Madrid back into the game in the 33rd minute, while Phil Foden made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute.

But record winners Real Madrid hit back again two minutes later from Vinicius Junior.

Benzema’s second goal of the night came from an 82nd-minute penalty kick, leaving Real Madrid well-positioned even after Bernardo Silva’s fourth for Manchester City.

The return leg is next week Wednesday in Madrid where Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola is bidding to become the first manager to oust Real Madrid three times in the elite event.

He did so with FC Barcelona in the 2011 semi-finals and with Manchester City in the 2020 last 16.

“It was a great game. End to end. We started really well and could have killed them off. In these games, we need to take more chances,” Foden said.

“For the fans watching it was obviously a great game of football. We are playing a side that have won the UEFA Champions League many times and if we give the ball away they are going to punish us.

“It is something we need to work on in the second leg. The tie is still on.”

Benzema on his part said: “A defeat is never good because we are really excited about the UEFA Champions League.

“The most important thing is we never lay down our arms, we are all in this until the end.

“Now we have to go to the Bernabéu and we will need our fans like never and we are going to do something magical, which is to win.”

Things looked grim for Real Madrid early.

That was when de Bruyne’s diving header at the far post off Riyad Mahrez’ cross and Jesus’ low shot off the Belgian playmaker put Manchester City 2-0 up after 11 minutes.

But Real Madrid hit back in the 33rd minute when Benzema fired Ferland Mendy’s cross in off the post.

The affair remained relentless after the break with Mahrez denied by the post before Foden headed home Fernandinho’s cross for 3-1.

Real Madrid hit back again a mere two minutes later from Vinicius Junior who first beat Fernandinho for the ball.

He then beat goalkeeper Ederson with a low shot after a solo across half the field.

Silva smashed Manchester City’s fourth into the top left corner in the 74th minute.

But Real Madrid simply refused to bow.

Benzema showed nerves like steel a few days after missing two penalty kicks in the league against Osasuna.

He calmly converted Panenka-style from the spot after a Laporte handball to add a brace to his hat-trick against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the last 16.

The Frenchman also had four goals against now former title-holders Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

The other first leg game is on Wednesday and it is also an English-Spanish affair, with Liverpool hosting surprise package Villarreal.

UCL: Real Madrid fall to defeat in classic encounter at Etihad

Manchester City will take a slender Champions League semi-final advantage to the Bernabeu after winning a seven-goal first-leg classic against Real Madrid at Etihad Stadium.

City delivered a magnificent display as they peppered Real’s goal for long periods but Carlo Ancelotti’s side kept rising off the canvas to somehow keep themselves in serious contention to reach another final.

Kevin De Bruyne set the tone for a magical night of football with a diving header from Riyad Mahrez’s cross in the second minute and in-form Gabriel Jesus quickly added a second from close range as Real reeled under wave after wave of attacks.

Mahrez enraged manager Pep Guardiola when he hit the side-netting instead of finding the unmarked Phil Foden, who shot inches wide before Karim Benzema, inevitably, gave Real a lifeline by sweeping home Ferland Mendy’s cross after 33 minutes.

Real escaped again shortly after the break when Mahrez struck the post but City restored their two-goal advantage when an unmarked Foden headed home Fernandinho’s cross in the 53rd minute.

City were pegged back again when Vinicius Junior dummied past Fernandinho and ran from inside his own half to score a superb second for Real.

However, a brilliant use of advantage from referee Istvan Kovacs allowed Bernardo Silva to fire into the top-left corner for City’s fourth.

There was still no let-up and Benzema capped a spectacular game by showing nerves of steel to chip a Panenka penalty past Ederson with eight minutes left following Aymeric Laporte’s handball.

UCL: Michael Owen predicts outcome of Man City vs Real Madrid semi-final clash

Former Liverpool and England forward Michael Owen, has predicted the outcome of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Real Madrid.

Both teams clash on Tuesday night at the Etihad in the first leg of the first semi-final encounter.

Owen predicts that “What a tie this should be! City were impressive at the weekend, and they will enter this with some confidence. We all know how desperate City are to win the Champions League, I am expecting a good performance.

“Real [Madrid] have done so well to get to this round, but I am not entirely sure how they have done it. Chelsea had plenty of chances to knock them out in the quarters, I don’t think City will be as wasteful.

“I will never write off Real in this competition, but I have to favour City. City will keep the ball and I can see them frustrating this Real side. I think Real will score, but I am going for a 3-1 City win.”

Michael James Owen is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, as well as for the England national team

  • Real Madrid renew offer to Chelsea defender Rudiger

Real Madrid renew offer to Chelsea defender Rudiger

La Liga giants Real Madrid are making an offer to Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

Madrid had been monitoring the 29-year-old for months, but they were put off by his high salary demands.

However, Rudiger’s agent has lowered the demands of a deal, and he is now very much a transfer target for Real Madrid, says Marca.

Carlo Ancelotti held a meeting with Florentino Perez last Friday to request reinforcements to a squad that has performed brilliantly all season, but has certain areas of improvement.

One of the players that he has asked for is the Chelsea defender, whose contract ends on June 30 and could be the first player to leave in a potential exodus at Stamford Bridge this summer due to their financial troubles.

Ancelotti believes that whilst his options in central defence are strong, they could be even better.

Also, the arrival of Rudiger could see David Alaba shifted to left-back to cover for Ferland Mendy and Marcelo due to the pair’s injury record.

Benzema’s winner completes Real Madrid fightback against Sevilla

Real Madrid fought back from 2-0 down to beat Sevilla 3-2 as Karim Benzema’s stoppage-time winner took them a step closer to clinching the title.

Sevilla looked to be breathing life back in LaLiga’s title race, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side produced a brutal second-half performance to make a real statement.

Perhaps suffering something of a UEFA Champions League hangover, Real Madrid were sluggish.

They soon found themselves trailing to goals from Ivan Rakitic and Erik Lamela, both caused by defensive mishaps.

But the pattern of play was dramatically flipped on its head after the break.

Rodrygo pulled one back and fellow substitute Nacho Fernandez equalised, before king of comebacks Benzema sealed the turnaround.

Real Madrid coach Ancelotti welcomes new signing

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has welcomed new signing Vinicius Tobias.

The 18-year-old has joined Real Madrid Castilla, having only signed for Shakhtar Donetsk in January from Internacional.

Tobias, a fullback, arrives as potential cover for Dani Carvajal.

Ancelotti said: “He’s a young player we’ve signed recently. He’s got quality and is learning.

“He’s got a lot of quality. He’s a right wing-back with energy who picks things up quickly and is disciplined. Our plans are to use him in the future, which is the case for all of the boys in our academy.”

Ben Chilwell slams VAR after Chelsea’s Champions League exit

Injured Chelsea fullback Ben Chilwell slammed VAR after seeing his teammates eliminated from the Champions League at Real Madrid.

The Blues were trailing 3-1 from the first-leg quarterfinal at Stamford Bridge, but had the scores locked at 3-3 at one stage last night.

Chelsea were in dreamland as Alonso notched a third in the 61st minute to give them a 3-0 lead, but VAR left them shattered and furious after claiming the Spaniard had handled the ball in the build-up in a major reprieve for Los Blancos.

The wing-back’s initial effort was blocked by Dani Carvajal, but as the ball ricocheted off Carvajal it clattered into Alonso’s hip, grazing his hand in the process.

The former Bolton Wanderers man thumped the ball into the top corner with his weaker right foot before charging off to celebrate – only to be devastated to see it ruled out.

With the goal ruled out the score was reverted back to 2-0 and 3-3 on aggregate. Real Madrid eventually won the tie, despite losing last night 2-3.

Team-mate Ben Chilwell has bemoaned the hand ball law after Alonso was denied.

The injured left-back took to social media to express his frustration at the decision, as he tweeted: “This hand ball rule…”
