Real Madrid edge past rivals Atletico in UCL

Brahim Diaz scored a brilliant winner to give Real Madrid a slender advantage over city rivals Atletico after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Rodrygo put the hosts ahead inside four minutes in the Bernabeu when he sprinted past Javi Galan and chopped inside the box before bending a wonderful hit past Jan Oblak.

Atletico, though, quickly settled into the game and levelled in the 32nd minute with another wonderful goal.

The in-form Julian Alvarez picked up the ball on the left side of the box, wrongfooted Eduardo Camavinga and whipped a spectacular curling strike around Thibaut Courtois and in off the post.

It was the Argentine striker’s seventh goal in nine appearances in the competition this season.

But it was Diaz, another former Manchester City player, who claimed the decisive goal in an electric Madrid derby.

The Spaniard sent Atletico defender Jose Gimenez to the floor as he skilfully waltzed into the box before driving a low shot into the far corner in the 55th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder had stepped up in Jude Bellingham’s absence, with the England international serving a one-game suspension after picking up his his third yellow card in the competition against Manchester City earlier this month.

Bellingham will be available for the defending European champions when they make the short trip to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the return on Wednesday, 12 March (20:00 GMT), with the winners likely to face Arsenal in the last eight after their 7-1 first-leg thrashing of PSV in Eindhoven.

Atletico midfielder Conor Gallagher told TNT Sports: “Real Madrid are a top team and I think we competed well. I think it was a decent performance.

“We would’ve liked to get a better result but it’s all to play for in the next leg. We feel we can beat any team and with our fans behind us, it helps, and we’ll be looking forward to it.”

Karim Benzema reveals Real Madrid return plans

Al-Ittihad striker Karim Benzema admits he’s keen on a return to Real Madrid once he hangs up his boots.

The Ballon d’Or winner has hinted he’d like a front office role at Real Madrid.

Benzema told Los amigos de Edu: “The other day I was with Florentino (Perez, president) in Madrid. When he signed me I told my father that as long as he was at Real Madrid, I would be there.

“He was the first person I called when I decided I was leaving. He didn’t quite understand… I told him that the youngsters, Vinicius and Rodrygo, were ready.”

He also said, “When I retire I want to be close to football. Coach? I don’t know, it seems more complicated than being a player. I want to be close to Florentino when I retire.”

  • Mbappe’s hat-trick dumps Man City out of UCL

Mbappe’s hat-trick dumps Man City out of UCL

Manchester City’s Champions League campaign came to a tame conclusion at the Bernabeu as Kylian Mbappe’s brilliant hat-trick inspired holders Real Madrid to a comfortable victory and place in the last 16.

Pep Guardiola’s side were attempting to reverse a 3-2 deficit from the play-off first leg but this contest was effectively over after four minutes when Mbappe’s precise lob from Raul Asencio’s pass increased their advantage.

City, with Erling Haaland only fit enough for the bench, saw their plight worsen moments after Mbappe’s opener when they lost defender John Stones to injury.

And City’s earliest Champions League exit since they failed to get out of the group in 2012-13 edged closer when Mbappe showed brilliant close control to wrong-foot Josko Gvardiol before beating Ederson after 33 minutes.

The France forward’s third came just after the hour with a low shot as City subsided, barely laying a glove on Real all night as they were outclassed.

City pulled a goal back when Nico Gonzalez turned in his first goal for the club after Omar Marmoush’s free-kick hit the bar, but it was no consolation on a desperate night for the reigning Premier League champions.

It was a chastening experience for Guardiola, whose discomfort was particularly relished by Real’s fans because of his old Barcelona allegiances, as he faces a mammoth task to rebuild and restore City to Europe’s top table.

  • Vinicius in direct talks with Saudi officials over €1bn contract

Vinicius in direct talks with Saudi officials over €1bn contract

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has been in talks with the Saudi Pro League since 2023, it has been revealed.

Radio Marca says in the first meeting, held in 2023, Vinicius was in attendance. He personally sat down with Saudi Arabia officials to listen to the project they were offering in a relaxed chat, lasting approximately fifteen minutes, in which he showed interest in the proposals, not only economic, but also sporting and personal.

At that first meeting, powerbrokers from the striker’s entourage, intermediaries and officials from the Royal House of Saudi Arabia met via video conference. The objective was to persuade ‘Vini’ with a promising future that is not based only on millions. In addition to beneficial commercial agreements, the Arabs tempted him with the idea of being an ‘ambassador’ for the World Cup that will take place in 2034.

The financial amounts were agreed upon in a second meeting with a more formal character and in a safe place: Prague. In the Czech capital, away from the media spotlight and in neutral territory, Vinicius’ agents met personally with the vice president of the Saudi Pro League, Saad Al Lazeez.

The exorbitant amounts put on the table amount to 1 billion euros for Vinicius for five seasons, meaning his salary would reach 200 million per season. The destination club is still not decided. Saudi Arabia is betting on him playing in Jeddah, although Neymar’s departure from Al Hilal could change his course if the transfer is finally carried out.

The player’s close entourage is very clear that this is an unprecedented and irresistible offer – and they made this clear to Vinicius Jr when they saw that the Arabs were serious. The dizzying figures and the projects offered have caused the player to consider his future.

More than a year and a half after learning of the billion-dollar offer for the first time, the links between Saudi Arabia and the player remain very clear. So much so that just three weeks ago his agent travelled to the Arab country for further talks.

That meeting came amid fresh reports of Vinicius Jr rejecting a new contract from Real Madrid. His currentl deal runs to 2027.

Manchester City are fighting for Champions League survival and a place in the last 16 after Jude Bellingham’s injury-time winner settled a tense play-off first leg in Real Madrid’s favour.

Pep Guardiola’s side rediscovered more of their true form early on at Etihad Stadium as Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol combined to set up Erling Haaland for a confident finish after 19 minutes.

Grealish, who had made a fine start, then went off injured and after Haaland hit the bar shortly after the break, Real took control.

Real let City off the hook by failing to take their chances until Kylian Mbappe scrambled home a close-range finish on the hour.

They continued to squander opportunities, including two for Bellingham, and were punished when Haaland put City back in front from the spot after 80 minutes following Dani Ceballos’ foul on Phil Foden.

Real, however, hit back with four minutes left, former City man Brahim Diaz equalisingbefore Bellingham finally hit the target, sliding in from close range to leave the holders as firm favourites to reach the knockout stage in next week’s second leg at The Bernabeu.

Barca trash Real Madrid in 7-goal thriller to lift 15th Supercopa de Espana

Barcelona came from an early goal down to beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.

Barca scored four goals in a dominant first half and survived having their goalkeeper sent off to clinch a record-extending 15th Spanish Super Cup trophy.

French forward Kylian Mbappe put Real in front after five minutes, finishing a solo run with a shot inside the far post.

However, Lamine Yamal levelled for Barcelona in the 22nd before striker Robert Lewandowski gave them the lead from the spot.

Raphinha increased the advantage with a stunning header from a Jules Kounde cross in the 39th minute and left back Alejandro Balde added a fourth for Barca deep into first-half stoppage time.

Raphinha made it 5-1 just after the break, before Barca were left with 10 men when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for fouling Mbappe in the 56th minute.

Rodrygo beat substitute keeper Inaki Pena from the resulting free kick but 10-man Barca easily saw out the win.
