I know PSG can beat Real Madrid – Pochettino

Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino insists they can beat Real Madrid.

PSG will meet Real in the Champions League round of 16 later this season.

Pochettino said: “It will be a difficult double confrontation because it is a team that has a great coach and great players. We are going to face Real Madrid, which is a team used to winning the Champions League, a team with history and a lot of experience. So it is clear that we will have to play a very difficult game.

“Of course, we have to have confidence. We have a great team, great footballers, with a lot of talent and I have no doubt that we will arrive in the best possible way and always with a lot of confidence in our players. We have enough quality to win this match and go to the next round. This is the goal of Paris Saint-Germain.”

Why I left Bayern Munich for Real Madrid – Alaba

David Alaba has revisited his decision to leave Bayern Munich for Real Madrid in the summer.

The Austria captain joined Real Madrid in a Bosman deal.

Alaba said: “Why did I leave Bayern for Real Madrid? I guess after 13 years at the same club I was wondering what the next step was. Last season was the best in Bayern history, we won six titles, so I wondered what I wanted to do.

“And finally, I decided to change, to take up a new challenge, not to give in to the easy way. When you grow up playing football, you know that Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world. So I didn’t have any surprises coming here. If you play football, you always have Real Madrid on the front page.”

Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema insists the success of Vinicius Junior this season is no surprise.

Benzema complained about Vinicius last season, but the pair have combined this term to fire Real Madrid to the top of the table and into the Champions League round of 16.

And the France striker says Vinicius’ form this term was always going to happen.

He said on El Larguero: “How do I explain the explosion of Vinicius Jr?

“I’m not surprised, I know him, I knew he could do these things on the pitch…”

The forward also explained what it has been like to move from Barcelona and LaLiga Santander to PSG and Ligue 1.

“It was a very big change after so much time in the same place, so it wasn’t easy,” he said.

  • I was disappointed not leaving PSG – Mbappe

I was disappointed not leaving PSG – Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe has revisited missing a move to Real Madrid last summer.

Mbappe saw offers of €160m and €180m from Real Madrid turned down by PSG in August. He is now set to come off contract in June.

He recalled: “During the Euro Cup they asked me a lot of questions. I talked a lot with my parents, I knew I wanted to leave. My parents told me to concentrate on the pitch. Maybe I was putting too much energy into other things.

“Disappointed with not leaving? A little. It’s not easy, but whatever happened, I was going to play for a great club. I’m Parisian, I feel great, but I wanted to discover something else.”

Asked about a reputation of being selfish, Mbappe responded: “I have the best assists in the French championship and in the Champions League, and that shows that I am not a selfish player who only thinks about scoring. I know I can do even better.”

I urged Mbappe to leave PSG for Real Madrid – Zlatan

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits he encouraged PSG ace Kylian Mbappe to move to Real Madrid.

Ibrahimovic has never been afraid to speak his mind and he has told of how he once advised Mbappe to sign for Real Madrid, although he also then warned Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi not to sell him.

The Swedish striker spent four years in Paris, but he left a year before Mbappe arrived from Monaco.

“It’s true that I advised [Mbappe] to leave the club,” Ibrahimovic told the Corriere della Sera.

“He needs a more structured environment, like the one at Real Madrid.

“But then I told the PSG president not to sell him.”

  • Karim Benzema gets suspended jail term in sex tape trial

Karim Benzema gets suspended jail term in sex tape trial

France and Real Madrid forward, Karim Benzema was on Wednesday sentenced to a one-year suspended jail term.

He was found guilty of complicity in the attempted blackmail of a former international teammate over a sex tape.

The Versailles court also fined him 75,000 euros ($84,170) and ordered him to pay former team mate, Mathieu Valbuena 80,000 euros to cover legal costs and 150,000 euros in damages together with his three other co-accused.

Benzema’s lawyer said he would appeal against the verdict.

Benzema, who had denied any wrongdoing, was not in court. He is due to play for Real Madrid against Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol later in the day.

“This outcome in no way corresponds with the reality of events,” lawyer Antoine Vey told reporters afterwards.

    Real Madrid declined to comment.

Earlier this month, President of French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet, said Benzema would not be excluded from the national team if he was convicted and given suspended sentence prosecutors wanted.

“The coach will always be responsible for his selection and Benzema will not be left out because of an eventual judicial sanction,” Le Graet told Le Parisien.

Prosecutors had argued that Benzema had encouraged Valbuena to pay a suspected group of blackmailers in order to keep the sexually explicit tape out of the public eye.

They said Valbuena received the first of several phone calls threatening to expose the tape in June 2015.

Valbuena told the court it was clear the caller wanted money and that the blackmail attempt left him fearing for his career and place in the national squad.

Benzema was recruited by the alleged blackmailers to encourage Valbuena to pay as his teammate stalled, the prosecution had added.

Benzema had shown no goodwill to Valbuena and pretended to have his best interests at heart, the judges said in their written ruling.

Benzema had “deliberately helped the authors of the attempted blackmail of Valbuena,” they added.

Benzema and Valbuena both lost their places in the national team in the wake of the scandal, dubbed the “sex tape affair”.

Benzema, 33, who has played more than 90 times for his country, was recalled to the France squad for this year’s European Championship.

Among Benzema’s co-defendants were childhood friend Karim Zenati, who acted as an intermediary, and Mustapha Zouaoui, one of the suspected architects of the scam.

All four defendants were found guilty in connection with the attempted blackmail.

UCL: Bale, Hazard out of Real squad for Sheriff match

Real Madrid FC forwards Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale, have been left out of the squad for Wednesday’s Champions League group match at Sheriff Tiraspol FC, the LaLiga club said on Tuesday.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Saturday Hazard was suffering from gastroenteritis, while Bale picked up a knock last week while on international duty with Wales.

Both players missed Sunday’s 4-1 league win at Granada, which moved them a point clear at the top.

Real named forwards Karim Benzema, Luka Jovic, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Mariano Diaz in their 23-man travelling squad for the match against Moldovans Sheriff.

Sheriff stunned Real 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu in September.

Real top Group D on nine points after four matches, two points above Inter Milan with Sheriff a point further back.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is on Manchester United’s radar.

Mundo Deportivo says United will make a move for Ndidi.

The £60million-rated midfielder is also a Real Madrid target. Defensive midfielder Ndidi, 24, is one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

And it’s an area which United are desperate to improve.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are eager to bring in the Nigerian international as midfield options to cover the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
