Real Madrid pound Minera 5-0 to reach Copa Del Rey last 16

Real Madrid sailed through to the Copa del Rey last 16 with a comfortable 5-0 victory at fourth-tier minnows Deportivo Minera on Monday.

Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler struck in the first half for the dominant Spanish champions.

Veteran Luka Modric netted the fourth before Guler tapped in his second to round off the rout.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti rested several key players ahead of the Spanish Super Cup starting in Saudi Arabia later this week, with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior only appearing as second-half substitutes.

Valverde volleyed home at the back post early on to help Madrid take control and Camavinga doubled the lead after 13 minutes with a header

Endrick came close to adding a third for Los Blancos before Guler pounced with the aid of a deflection after cutting in from the right.

Brahim Diaz hit the post early in the second half before 39-year-old midfielder Modric notched with a neat curling effort.

Guler finished with ease at the death after Fran Garcia teed him up to cap a fine night for the Turkish playmaker.

On Saturday Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also eased into the next round, while holders Athletic Bilbao scraped through on penalties against third-tier Logrones.

The draw for the next round takes place on Wednesday, with the fixtures due to take place between January 14-16.

Arda Guler scored twice as Real Madrid cruised into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey by thrashing fourth-tier minnows Deportiva Minera 5-0.

First-half goals from Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Guler put the much-changed LaLiga champions in control at Estadio Cartagonova.

Captain Luka Modric added a fourth early in the second half before Guler claimed his second late on to seal an emphatic third-round success.

Real return to action in just three days’ time when they take on Real Mallorca in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti made 10 changes to his starting XI following Friday’s dramatic 2-1 comeback win at Valencia which took his side back to the top of the LaLiga table.

Midfielder Valverde was the only player retained, while there were senior debuts for unrelated defenders Lorenzo Aguado and Diego Aguado, with Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé among the substitutes.

Uruguay international Valverde quickly made the most of his inclusion, opening the scoring in the fifth minute by emphatically volleying into the bottom left corner after Brahim Diaz’s centre was only partially cleared by Cristhian Britos.

Cartagena-based Minera, who upset LaLiga side Alaves on penalties in the previous round, were three goals down inside half an hour.

Camavinga headed in Fran Garcia’s cross from the left to double Real’s lead in the 13th minute, before Guler drilled home from just inside the 18-yard area with the aid of a deflection 15 minutes later.

After Diaz hit a post eight minutes into the second period, veteran midfielder Modric stretched the visitors’ advantage further.

The 39-year-old exchanged passes with Diaz before curling into the bottom right corner to claim his second goal of the season, having come off the bench to equalise against Valencia.

High-profile pair Vinicius, who was sent off at the Mestalla three days ago, and Mbappe were introduced with 27 minutes remaining.

But it was teenage Turkey international Guler who completed the scoring on an evening when Real registered 33 attempts at goal.

The 19-year-old tapped home two minutes from time after Garcia cut the ball back from the left following a pass from Mbappé.

Real Madrid see off Sevilla, climb to second in LaLiga

Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde each scored first-half screamers as Real Madrid ended 2024 by beating Sevilla 4-2 at the Bernabeu. The win moves the Los Blanco’s to second place in LaLiga.

Real quickly established a 2-0 lead via stunning strikes from Mbappe in the 10th minute and Valverde in the 20th, and the rampant start continued with Rodrygo adding a third in the 34th minute.

Sevilla replied via Isaac Romero a minute later, before Brahim Diaz netted the hosts’ fourth eight minutes into the second half.

Dodi Lukebakio subsequently pulled another goal back for the away side with five minutes of normal time remaining.

After Atletico Madrid won 2-1 at Barcelona on Saturday to replace the Catalan outfit at the top, this result saw Real leapfrog them as well.

Mbappe opened the scoring as he collected the ball from Rodrygo outside the box and sent a superb effort flying past Alvaro Fernandez.

And after the Frenchman miscued from a good position, skewing over the bar, Valverde doubled the advantage with a show-stopper from even further out, unleashing a 30-yard effort into the top corner.

Looking eager to get in on the act next as Real continued to dominate, Rodrygo hit a drive wide, then added the third by sweeping home from Vazquez’s pass.

Moments later Sevilla had a goal back, Romero heading in from Juanlu’s cross, but Real were soon back on the attack as Vazquez was denied by Fernandez.

The visitors had further attempts with Nemanja Gudelj bending a shot over in first-half stoppage-time and Romero seeing one parried by Thibaut Courtois early in the second.

Real’s fourth then arrived when Diaz blasted in following good work in the build-up from Vazquez and Mbappe, who provided the assist.

After Romero hit a shot wide, there was applause all around the stadium as 39-year-old Sevilla skipper Jesus Navas came off the bench for his 705th appearance for the club and final one before retirement.

Rodrygo was thwarted by Fernandez soon after, Mbappe fired over and Romero then almost had his second as he hit a low shot against the post, having been teed up by Navas.

The final stages saw Mbappe and Sevilla’s Albert Sambi Lokonga both have shots saved, before Lukebakio slotted in at the near post for 4-2, Courtois getting a touch but unable to stop the ball going in.

Real are now two points ahead of Barcelona, who have played a game more than both them and Atletico.

  • Vinicius Jr slams calendar after injury blow

Vinicius Jr slams calendar after injury blow

Real Madrid ace Vinicius Junior has blamed the calendar for his hamstring injury.

Real announced this morning that Vinicius Junior is out of their Champions League clash with Liverpool this week due to the setback.

Indeed, it’s suggested the attacker won’t be seen until mid-December.

“This crazy calendar,” lamented Vini Jr on social media when reacting to his injury report.

    “But now to recover!”

The player is expected to miss Real’s games against Liverpool, Getafe, Athletic Club, Girona, Atalanta and Rayo Vallecano.

  • After 5 games without goals, Mbappe scores as Real Madrid cruise to Leganes win

After 5 games without goals, Mbappe scores as Real Madrid cruise to Leganes win

Kylian Mbappe scored his first goal in five games for Real Madrid as the champions beat Leganes 3-0 on Sunday in La Liga.

Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham also struck as Madrid moved second, four points behind leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.

Los Blancos capitalised after Barcelona slipped to a draw at Celta Vigo on Saturday with a straightforward win against 14th-placed Leganes.

Madrid face Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday in the Champions League in a crucial game for the Spanish side after two defeats in their first four European matches and warmed up with a solid performance.

The Italian lined up with young centre-back Raul Asencio as well as Dani Ceballos, who was afforded a rare start and Turkish playmaker Arda Guler.

Ancelloti was missing long-term absentees Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao among others, but was able to bring goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois back in for the visit to Butarque, in the Madrid suburbs.

Mbappe started in his favoured left wing position, a change of strategy from Ancelotti after using Vinicius Junior there until now.

It paid dividends as the forward netted his second goal in his last eight games, although he had a strike ruled out for offside beforehand.

“We changed the position of the forwards, with Mbappe outside and he did well, like Vinicius inside,” said Ancelotti.

“The team managed the good feelings that we had in the (previous 4-0 win) against Osasuna well, and we confirmed them today,” said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian lined up with young centre-back Raul Asencio as well as Dani Ceballos, who was afforded a rare start and Turkish playmaker Arda Guler.

Mbappe was left out of France’s squad for the second time in as many months during the recent international break and has been struggling with off-field problems, possibly affecting his start to life at Madrid following his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Guler had Madrid’s first real chance but Marko Dmitrovic parried his effort after the midfielder cut in from the right.

Mbappe broke the deadlock shortly before half-time, teed up at the back post by Vinicius, who nipped in to capitalise on some Leganes defensive confusion.

Valverde, captaining Madrid for the first time and playing out of position at right-back, drilled home his team’s second in the 66th minute from a free-kick.

Dmitrovic thwarted a powerful Mbappe strike as the French forward looked to grab a second and seal Madrid’s win.

In the end it was England star Bellingham, netting his second goal of the season, heading home a rebound from close range after Brahim Diaz’s deflected shot hit the crossbar.

“We were very comfortable in the first half, playing the game we wanted to, but (to concede) after a mistake… hurts more, it got away from us because of our errors,” admitted Leganes defender Sergio Gonzalez.

“The team gave everything, and with the smallest opportunities, they punished us.”

Ancelotti was happy with 21-year-old centre-back Asencio’s performance on his first start for the club.

Transfer: Real Madrid consider re-sigining Man Utd star

La Liga club Real Madrid are exploring re-signing Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Trivela says Real are considering a move for the Brazilian veteran in January.

Real management recognise the retirement of Toni Kroos has left a massive void, which has led to discussions about bringing Casemiro back to the club.

It’s believed Casemiro would have a big impact on the pitch and in the dressing room at Real, which are struggling for consistency this season.

The 32 year-old left Real for United in 2022 and has a deal to 2026.

  • ICYMI: Vinicius hat-trick helps Real Madrid win over Osasuna

ICYMI: Vinicius hat-trick helps Real Madrid win over Osasuna

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr scored a hat-trick to help the LaLiga champions snap a two-game winless run in all competitions with a commanding 4-0 victory over Osasuna on Saturday.

This follows shock defeats by Barcelona and AC Milan, their first back-to-back home losses in over three years.

Real suffered two major early blows against Osasuna as forward Rodrygo and defender Eder Militao were both forced off injured.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti brought Morocco forward Brahim Diaz and 21-year-old academy defender Raul Asencio off the bench and his side kept calm led by a brilliant performance from Vinicius.

The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in the 34th minute after taking a Jude Bellingham pass in his stride to beat the offside trap and firing an unstoppable strike past goalkeeper Sergio Herrera.

Bellingham recovered his scoring instinct by netting his first goal of the season with a brilliant finish eight minutes later, lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper to extend Real’s lead.

Real’s stand-in right back Lucas Vazquez was also forced off but Vinicius extended the lead with a great goal in the 61st minute, running on to a long pass from his goalkeeper Andriy Lunin before rounding Herrera and tapping into the empty net.

Eight minutes later, Diaz stole the ball from a distracted defender on the edge of the box and put it on a plate for Vinicius to fire home and wrap up a comprehensive win with his second hat-trick in four games.

Vinicius is now second in LaLiga’s top-scorer race with eight goals in 12 games, six behind Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski.

Second-placed Real climbed to 27 points, six behind leaders Barcelona. Osasuna are fifth on 21 points.

“I don’t want to touch this subject (the injuries), because it hurts me to see colleagues crying… It breaks my heart…” Diaz, who missed over six weeks this season with a thigh injury, told Real Madrid TV.

“We won convincingly,” Diaz added. “We played a complete game, with hard work and effort. The victory was needed. Now we have to continue at this high level, because we have talent.”

La Liga: Barca thrash Real Madrid in El Clasico match

Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski scored a quick-fire second-half double to set the leaders on course for a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid on Saturday.

Barcelona’s complete display capped a stunning Clasico victory in LaLiga for the Blaugranas.

Real were in control of the game from early on but became frustrated as they wasted several clear chances.

This was before Polish striker Lewandowski silenced the Bernabeu crowd with a two-goal blitz after quick counter attacks in the 54th and 56th minutes.

As Real tried to get back into the contest, Barca killed them off with two more goals on the counter as 17-year-old Lamine Yamal became the youngest Clasico scorer in the 77th minute and captain Raphinha wrapped up the win in the 84th.

Barca extended their lead at the top as they moved to 30 points, six above Real and nine clear of Villarreal in third.

  • Henry insists Mbappe not doing enough for Madrid

Henry insists Mbappe not doing enough for Madrid

Former France international Thierry Henry insists Kylian Mbappe is underperforming for Real Madrid.

Mbappé has managed eight goals and two assists in 13 competitive matches for his new club.

But Henry emphasises that it is not enough that Mbappé scores goals, but with Real Madrid more is required.

“Is he playing at his best level as we have seen him play at PSG? No. He still has to learn. He has to play better as a ‘nine’, which is very difficult for him right now,” he told CBS Sports.

“He scores goals, but sometimes it is not enough in such clubs (like Real Madrid). I’ll play devil’s advocate: we always say it takes time for a player to adapt to a new club, but unfortunately, when you wear that shirt, they don’t give you much time.”

  • UCL: Real Madrid fight back to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2

UCL: Real Madrid fight back to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2

Vinicius Junior scored a hat-trick as title holders Real Madrid fought from two goals down to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Antonio Rüdiger’s header in the 60th, Vinicius Junior two minutes later, Lucas Vazquez in the 83rd and Vinicius Junior with a stunning solo in the 86th and in stoppage time clinched victory for the Spanish side.

The final result had appeared unlikely at half-time when Dortmund led 2-0 from Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe Gittens.

The record 15-time champions Real prevailed like in last season’s final they had won 2-0 against Dortmund at Wembley.

Real rebounded from a 1-0 defeat against Lille and have six points, the same as Dortmund who dropped their first points in their late collapse, after having won their first two games.

“We changed formation, but also the dynamics in the second half. This is our competition and make no mistake we want to win it again,” Vinicius Junior told Movistar.
