  • Aubameyang deals blow to FC Barcelona’s La Liga top-four rivals

Aubameyang deals blow to FC Barcelona’s La Liga top-four rivals

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on target again as FC Barcelona scored an important 1-0 victory over top-four rivals Real Sociedad in Spanish La Liga on Thursday.

A close-range header in the first half was Aubameyang’s 11th goal in his past 14 games for Barca —— as many as he scored in his 34 prior outings in all competitions.

It proved to be enough to end La Real’s seven-game unbeaten league run at Reale Arena, with Alexander Isak and Alexander Sorloth wasting the opportunities that came their way.

Barca moved up to second while La Real were left six points adrift of fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with five games to play.

Defeat put a doubt on their credentials for achieving UEFA Champions League qualification.

La Real conceded their first goal at home in eight league matches in the 11th minute.

Gavi kept the ball alive after Ousmane Dembele hit the post and picked out Ferran Torres, who lifted a cross for Aubameyang to nod home.

Frenkie de Jong, Torres and Aubameyang all narrowly missed the target before Isak miscued when presented with a glorious chance to equalise on the stroke of half-time.

Barca were again let off the hook within two minutes of the restart when Sorloth blazed over from inside the six-yard box after a wonderful delivery from Adnan Januzaj.

There was a brief interruption due to objects being thrown in the direction of Gerard Pique from the stands.

The centre-back was the subject of their ire after controversial audio clips of him negotiating a deal to move the Supercopa de Espana to Saudi Arabia were released.

Pique played on after appearing to request a substitution in the first half but Barca lost Ronald Araujo to a knee injury in the 55th minute.

Sorloth and Januzaj were kept at bay by Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Gavi missed a chance to put the game to bed.

But Xavi’s team were able to hold on for an important three points.

  • Ruthless Real Madrid go eight points clear in La Liga

Ruthless Real Madrid go eight points clear in La Liga

Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric scored stunning long-range goals as ruthless Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 to go eight points clear at the top of the Spanish LaLiga.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s early penalty kick put the sixth-placed Basques in front at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, but Real Madrid fought back to stay on course for the title.

Two brilliant strikes in the space of three minutes late in the first half from Camavinga and Modric put Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead.

Karim Benzema was on target from the penalty kick spot after having two goals disallowed.

Marco Asensio added a fourth goal to cap a hugely impressive performance from Los Blancos.

Oyarzabal drilled La Real into a 10th-minute lead from the penalty kick spot, firing into the bottom-right corner after Dani Carvajal had upended David Silva.

The leaders ramped up the pressure after that early setback and were level four minutes before half-time.

That was when Camavinga let fly from 30 yards out with his left foot and gave Alex Remiro no chance with a thunderous drive.

Benzema had a goal ruled out for offside moments later.

But Modric put Real Madrid in front by bending a sublime left-foot strike into the top-far corner after creating space for himself with his quick feet.

Los Blancos carried on where they left off after the break.

Benzema had another goal chalked off for offside but slotted home from the penalty kick spot.

This was after a VAR check ruled Vinicius Junior had been fouled by Aritz Elustondo just inside the penalty box.

Asensio put the icing on the cake, tucking in after the marauding Carvajal cut the ball back into his path as La Real were swept aside.

  • Griezmann reveals best tactics for Barca after Sociedad win

Griezmann reveals best tactics for Barca after Sociedad win

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann says he’s happy in the current 3-4-3 system at the La Liga club.

Griezmann started and impressed as Barca thrashed Real Sociedad 6-1 in San Sebastian.

“What suits me best is being on the pitch. This is what I want the most. That’s what I want, but yes, with three central defenders, we are safer, the midfielder works a lot,” he said.

“The coach has found the key. It is then a question of adapting to the system that the team needs.

    “Work and more work.”

  • Van Gaal never gave me chance at Man Utd

Van Gaal never gave me chance at Man Utd

Real Sociedad winger Adnan Janzuaj blames Louis van Gaal for his demise at Manchester United.

Januzaj faces his old club on Thursday night in the Europa League.

He recalled: “When I played my first season at United and came through the academy, people were showing me love. The coaches were letting me enjoy my football/

‘Then obviously when a coach (Van Gaal) comes who doesn’t show you love, it gets more difficult to prove yourself and be happy.

“When Sir Alex Ferguson was talking to us, he gave us a bit of hope: ‘Work hard, your time will come’.

“Even if you had a bad pass, Van Gaal would shout at you. For young players that isn’t good, you have to teach them. A coach is like a teacher, that’s what I missed the most.

“It wasn’t only to me but also to other young players. To Memphis (Depay) also, he’s a great player and you can see he’s making a difference with Lyon in France.

“As young players we just had to sit there and wait for our opportunity to play for 10 or 15 minutes. Okay, we can show a glimpse of our quality but you cannot show how good you are.”

A close friend of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, he accepts that he would have been better off playing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rather than Van Gaal who publicly criticised his work ethic in training.

“You can see Ole is really nice and loves the players from the academy. For young players like Marcus they are very lucky to have a coach like that.

“When you are a young boy and you’re being criticised for things you never did – the coach’s excuse was that I wasn’t training very well – I couldn’t understand. You play like you train. If I was doing well in games, I don’t think I was that bad in training.

“People had a bad image of me and that’s the one regret, that I had lot people questioning my mentality.

“Van Gaal told me at the last minute that I could go on loan and I was rushed off to Germany.

“Maybe I went too early but I just wanted to play football. I didn’t want to be sat on the bench for six or seven games in a row.”

  • Barca prove too strong for upstarts Real Sociedad

Barca prove too strong for upstarts Real Sociedad

FC Barcelona finally made a statement of intent in what has been a chaotic season as they came from behind to beat La Liga leaders Real Sociedad 2-1 at home on Wednesday.

Brazilian striker Willian Jose gave the visitors the lead from close range in the 27th minute, but FC Barcelona came right back at them, levelling four minutes later.

This was when Jordi Alba smashed the ball into the top corner with his weaker right foot.

The Catalans took the lead shortly before halftime when Frenkie de Jong arrived into the box and poked home a cross from Alba.

Jong initially saw his goal ruled out for offside but then celebrated when it was awarded after a VAR review.

Real Sociedad, missing David Silva and top scorer Mikel Oyarzabal, failed to rise to the occasion, yet they should have equalised several times.

One of such moments was when Alexander Isak was thwarted by a fine tackle from FC Barcelona’s Pedri and a great save by Marc-Andre ter Stegen from close range.

“It was our best performance of the season, I’m so happy with the attitude the team showed,” said Alba.

“It’s difficult when you don’t have fans in the stadium, but we were still really motivated to win the game. Today, we saw a great Barca side, one that was ready to fight for every ball.”

A second consecutive victory took FC Barcelona up to fifth in La Liga on 20 points after 12 games and knocked Real Sociedad off the top and into second.

Atletico Madrid, who also have 26 points, sneaked up to the summit on goal difference but have one game in hand on FC Barcelona and three on Real Sociedad.

FC Barcelona produced a commanding performance, especially in the first half, but went behind against the run of play.

This was when Sociedad staged an elaborate move following a corner and Willian Jose appeared at the far post to nudge in a cross from Portu.

They quickly got back into the game through Alba’s thumping strike and should have gone ahead.

This was when Antoine Griezmann hit the woodwork against the side where he began his career before Martin Braithwaite lifted the ball over the bar with the goal gaping.

They kept at it, though, and were rewarded when Dutch midfielder De Jong scored his first goal of the season.

Griezmann missed an even clearer chance to score in the second half, while Lionel Messi continued to show signs of a lack of sharpness.

FC Barcelona faced a nervy ending but pulled off a win that will lift their morale and revitalise their hopes of joining the title race.
