No discrimination in our recruitment criteria – NNPC

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has clarified that there was no discrimination in the various requirements in the corporation’s recruitment process.

Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division disclosed this on Monday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in a statement on Sunday rejected the requirement for recruitment by the NNPC alleging it was an anti-poor and anti-masses.

The association further gave the corporation a 72-hour ultimatum to withdraw all alleged anti-poor and anti-masses conditions in the criteria.

Also, an Abuja-based lawyer, Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi, had threatened to drag the management of the NNPC to court following what he described as “discriminatory” recruitment process.

He vowed to approach the court to ensure protection of the fundamental rights of Nigerians who were qualified to apply but were barred from participating because of age criteria.

“No, there was no discrimination in the criteria, If there is anything, the corporation is supposed to be commended now that it is trying to recruit to reduce the unemployment in the country.

“Our criterion was based on carefully thought out criteria of which we carried out a survey to arrive at all those criteria that were stipulated,’’ he said.

According to him, the corporation over the years has sustained the standard.

He added that the recruitment criteria were of four categories which every interested Nigeria should explore.

“There are in many categories, there are four, if you didn’t meet one category, you move to the next, if you didn’t meet the second, you go to the third and so on.

“For the graduate trainee, we put age level at 28 years, the second 34, the third 37 and the last 40. So, any Nigerian looking for employment that falls within any of the four categories is qualified,’’ he added.

He said that it was unfortunate that some people after attempting and were not successful alleged discriminatory in its selection process.

Commenting on the 72 hours ultimatum by NANS to reverse the criteria or they would embark on a protest, he said that NANS should focus on their studies to graduate first with good certificates.

“NANS should pass their examination first and graduate after which they will be qualified for employment.

“What NANS should face now is to study very hard and graduate and make a reasonable degree. They have not graduated yet and they are looking for employment,’’ he said.

The corporation opened a recruitment portal from March 13 to March 26 and has started short listing of qualified candidates.

This is even as the Federal Government said it was recruiting 10,000 police personnel.

The Police Service Commission made the disclosure yesterdayin a statement byits Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani.

This was as he further disclosed that Bayelsa State had the lowest number of applicants, while Ebonyi, Anambra, Lagos, Abia, Imo, Delta, andEnuguStates, followedin successive order.

Again, Ani stated that out of the aforementioned number, 20, 217 applicants were males, while 1,661 females.

He said: “The Police Service Commission has so far receivedtwentyonethousand, eight hundred and seventy eight thousand applications, five days after it opened its portal for the recruitment of 10 thousand ConstablesonFriday, November30th, 2018.

  • Ambode orders immediate recruitment of 1,000 teachers

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has announced the commencement of the recruitment of 1,000 teachers in the state.

Ambode spoke at the state’s Third Quarter Town Hall Meeting, the 12th in the series, at the Community Primary School, Iberekodo in the Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area.

The governor, who also directed that a physically-challenged resident and graduate of Computer Studies, Michael Ogunyemi, be employed from August 1, 2018, said, “more teachers will be recruited as the need arises.”

He called on the Federal Government to revive the ports in other states of the federation in order to solve the perennial traffic congestion in the Apapa area of Lagos.

He said beyond getting other ports up and running, the issue of tankers queuing up to lift petroleum products from tank farms in Apapa was also a major issue causing gridlock and damaging road infrastructure.

“This issue has become perennial and in the last six years, it has always been there. It comes and goes, but the challenge is to be able to find a permanent solution. We believe strongly that every layer of government should collaborate to resolve this Apapa crisis,” he said.

The governor also noted that oil pipelines should be revived to discourage the trend of thousands of trucks coming from other parts of the country to lift petroleum products from Apapa.

“It is bad that we still use truck to lift petroleum products from Apapa to other parts of the country. As it is now, other ports in Nigeria must begin to work immediately to decongest gridlock in Lagos; what has led to the use of trucks to lift fuel, which is vandalism of pipelines, should be addressed immediately.

“We believe that this will allow the roads to become free. We don’t need to continuously use taxpayers’ money to build roads that will be destroyed by tankers,” he said.

The Governor also expressed concern about the approval for the development of tank farms in the Ijegun area of Lagos, saying tank farms should be located in areas that were not populated.

“We don’t need tank farms within Lagos metropolis anymore. There are 68 tank farms in Apapa alone. Beyond Apapa, they have approved tank farms in Ijegun and that is where we have a huge population,” he said.

Speaking on the efforts of his administration to develop the economy of the state, Ambode said his administration had continued to ensure that the future of Lagos remained on a sound pedestal.

“Our promise from the beginning was that we are going to give you a government of inclusion and it’s very clear that we are on track. When we look at our scorecard, which is to keep Lagos on a trajectory of growth and development, we are on that track,” he said.

Ambode also said the construction of the Epe Airport and reconstruction of the coastal road were on course, adding that the 27 network of roads in Ojokoro, Ayinke House, among other projects would be completed before the next quarter.

  • Recruitment: Police shortlist 37,062 candidates for examination

The police on Monday confirmed shortlisting 37,062 Nigerians for examination in the latest round of recruitment exercise.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) said in a statement Monday that the candidates were selected out of 133,324 applicants earlier shortlisted for screening.

Ikechukwu Ani, spokesperson for the PSC who made the announcement, said the examination would hold on May 25 at Computer-Based Test Centres all over the country.

The centres are available in all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The development is the latest stage of the recruitment exercise which began with physical and document screening on May 7.

Six thousand candidates are expected to be recruited at the end of the exercise.

Successful candidates from the screening exercise have been informed via text messages and emails to attend the examination at their respective designated centres on May 25.

Candidates who are yet to receive any invitation are required to check with the police command headquarters in their state for the date, venue and time for the examination.

They could also check their details by logging on to the PSC website: www.psc.org.ng.

“Candidates are required to come with their biometric and data capturing slip to the examination slip, Mr Ani said. “They will not be allowed to enter the examination hall with electronic devices such as spy eye glasses, telephone hand set, calculator, wrist watches and camera.”

“Persons not invited for the examination or who do not have the biometric and data capturing slips are advised to stay away from the examination centres,” he added.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training, Mr. Emmanuel Inyang, said this during an inspection of the ongoing recruitment exercise at the Akwa Ibom Command in Uyo on Friday.

Inyang said the decision was taken to prevent the recruitment of persons with questionable character, especially those involved in cultism, into the Police Force.

He explained that the Police is conducting background, medical, and psychiatric checks to ensure that only the right candidates are recruited into the Force.

“The Police will ensure that candidates do not have any tattoo marks, because we do not want to take cult members into the Police Force.

“The total number of those that have applied for the Police job is about 133,000. They are going through screening all over the country. Out of this figure, we are only going to take the best 6,000 candidates.

“One will be a general medical practitioner who is going to examine the candidates to ensure that they are very fit.

“They will carry out certain tests — maybe X-ray and other tests. The screening teams will check their heart and every other thing, to make sure that they are physically fit.”

The DI-G gave an assurance that the recruitment would done evenly across the 774 local government areas, without any political interference.

Police recruitment: 133,324 applicants for compulsory psychiatric test

Nigeria Police Force on Monday says 133,324 applicants shortlisted for recruitment into the force will undergo compulsory psychiatric test.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently gave approval for the recruitment of 6,000 police constables to address the nation’s security challenges.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training, Mr Emmanuel Inyang, made the disclosure at the launch of the exercise at Police Command in the FCT, Abuja, that the essence of the test was to ensure that the applicants were not on drugs.

He said that aside the psychiatric test, applicants would also undergo general medical test to ascertain their fitness for the job.

Inyang added that the test would start with screening of applicants’ documents to ensure that they were qualified.

He noted that after screening of documents, applicants would also be subjected to aptitude test that would be conducted by JAMB.

He explained that the screening would be supervised by zonal Assistant Inspector-Generals of police to ensure transparency.

Inyang said the 774 local government areas of the country would be represented to ensure federal character in the process, saying “we have representatives from Police Service Commission (PSC) and Federal Character Commission (FCC) to ensure that federal character was captured.”

He said the force took these steps to ensure that the best were recruited and for effective service delivery to Nigerians.

PSC had announced that screening for the 133,324 shortlisted applicants would commence on May 7 in the 36 state police command headquarters and the Federal Capital Territory.

NNPC denies social media recruitment advert

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says the recruitment advertisement by the corporation currently trending on social media is false.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the NNPC spokesman, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, said that the advertisement was intended to mislead innocent members of the public.

According to him, the advertisement is set in NNPC’s corporate colour with its logo.

He said that it invited candidates with background in Sciences, Engineering, Business/Finance, Social Sciences, Arts/Humanities as well as Medical/Health Sciences to apply.

”It gave required educational attainments of prospects to include: Master’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, Higher National Diploma (HND) and National Diploma.

”The advertisement is phantom. The corporation calls on unsuspecting members of the public to be wary of the scam.

”NNPC advises members of the public to disregard any announcement of recruitment or invitation to recruitment interview appearing in the social media.

“The corporation is not carrying out any recruitment exercise now,” he said.

Ughamadu urged job seekers to be alert on the antics of scammers who deploy such communication strategies as text messages and vacancy announcements on social media platforms.

He said that the scammers also use forged letters inviting job seekers for non-existing job interviews with a view to extorting money from them.

The spokesman called on those that had already fallen victims to volunteer information to the law enforcement agencies for appropriate actions.

”As an equal opportunities employer, NNPC will, as usual, advertise vacancies in the corporation through the national dailies,” Ughamadu said.
