  • Navy apprehends suspected notorious recruitment fraudster

The Nigerian Navy (NN) says it has arrested a 27-year-old man, Yohanna Ahmadu, a suspected recruitment fraudster for attempting to defraud one Mr Adamu Ibrahim during the last nationwide recruitment exercise.

Navy Capt. Suleman Dahun, the Acting Director of Information, Naval Headquarters, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Quoting Commodore Gbolahan Olubode–Fazaz, the Commander Naval unit Abuja, Dahun said that the suspect had charged his victim the sum of N50,000.00 and promised to get him enlisted into the Nigerian Navy.

The acting director further alleged that the fraudster had directed the victim to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Kaduna and promised that his “boss’’ would assist in the exercise.

“Ahmadu thereafter, collected the victim’s passport photograph, photocopies of his credentials and urine sample for a fake test.

“The suspect demanded the sum of N50,000.00 from his victim before releasing a fake Nigerian Navy appointment letter which he will use to report for the training at the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School, Onne, Port Harcourt.

“But luck ran out on him when the victim called a Naval personnel complaining of this extortion and was directed to play along by promising to pay the amount upon their return to Abuja, where he was lured to a Diamond Bank branch in Kubwa and arrested,” he said.

According to Dahun, Ahmadu has been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The acting director then warned interested members of the public to be wary of recruitment websites that would always ask for money as recruitment into the service was free of charge.

  • Recruitment: Over 2,000 intakes undergoing naval training – Naval chief

Recruitment: Over 2,000 intakes undergoing naval training – Naval chief

The Nigerian Navy says it is currently training over 2,000 new intakes to support other security agencies in internal security operations in the country.

Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Adm. Obi Ofodile, disclosed this while on familiarisation tour of navy training school in Onne, Rivers.

Ofodile also said that the navy was currently upgrading its facilities and expanding its training programmes to meet with expected high intake into the service.

According to him, the navy was not unmindful of the need for quality training for both new intakes and officers and ratings.

“The Nigerian navy has been increasing its intake of new trainees but cannot just make significant increase overnight otherwise it would produce half-baked personnel.

“The reason for curtailing number of new intakes is that the facilities have to be directly proportional to the number of intakes.

“However, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, is currently providing new facilities and improving existing ones to take care of the number that we want.

“Also, new buildings equipped with state-of-the-art facilities are springing up aimed to improve personnel proficiency to perform their duties professionally and efficiently,” he said.

Ofodile said that the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School (NNBTS); Nigerian Navy College (NNC) and the recently inaugurated Nigerian War College would drive its training programmes.

He said aside infrastructure development the CNS was equally passionate to expanding its training programme for effective service delivery to the country.

The naval chief said that paucity of funds had partly affected the desire of the navy to expand its training programmes to accommodate more personnel.

“Just as the saying goes: if a person pays N10 for security, the individual will get N10 security – meaning that if an individual wants quality security then he or she has to pay for it.

“It is in this vein that the CNS has been supporting NAVTRAC with means to maintain quality training and retraining of personnel in the navy,” he said. (NAN)

  • Army refute recruitment rumour, warn Nigerians of fraudsters

The Depot Nigerian Army on Friday alerted Nigerians of the activities of fraudsters claiming to be recruiting candidates on its behalf.

The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Depot NA/Nigerian Military School, Capt. Hussaini Sani, in a statement on Friday, warned aspiring recruits against falling prey to the fraudsters.

It said, “It has been brought to the notice of Headquarters of Depot Nigerian Army that criminally minded individuals are parading themselves as relatives to the Depot Commandant, Brig-Gen. Victor Ezugwu.

“The fraudsters do that to defraud innocent citizens who were not successful during the just concluded 76 Regular Recruits Intake exercise.

“Others also claimed to be principal staff officers of Depot NA thereby convincing their victims to pay huge amount of money to be recruited into the Nigerian Army.”

The statement explained that the Depot has no hand in conducting recruitment exercise, but only train those already selected.

It further stated that recruitment for 76 Regular Recruits Intake had since been officially closed.

“Consequently, potential recruits are advised to try the next recruitment intake and not to allow these criminal minded and unpatriotic individuals to defraud them under any guise.

“Such arrangement does not exist and recruitment into the Nigerian Army is free and no candidate is expected to pay money to any individual whatsoever,” it added.

Investigation shows that activities of the fraudsters in Zaria had been on for years where they collect between N150,000 and N300,000 per candidate.
