  • NNPC denies rejecting HND in ongoing recruitment exercise

NNPC denies rejecting HND in ongoing recruitment exercise

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has denied rejecting graduates with Higher National Diploma (HND) in the ongoing graduate trainee recruitment exercise.

It was gathered that some HND graduates who scaled the computer-based test (CBT) stage of the recruitment exercise were being sent away from participating in their scheduled interviews after travelling from different parts of the country to the FCT.

The HND graduates who participated in the exercise reported that the NNPC was using security at its head office in Abuja to chase them away for not possessing a Master’s degree after passing the CBT.

Recall that NNPC Limited in July 2024 opened its application portal for qualified candidates to apply for the graduate trainee programme.

The NNPC said graduate trainees are expected to support the implementation of its organisational processes, deliver cost-effective business outcomes, support line managers and supervisors to develop and implement strategic work plans across diverse functions and support delivery of project team assignments.

“Applicants must have any of the following minimum qualifications in the under listed disciplines: Bachelor’s Degree in the First Class/Second Class Upper Division.

“HND (Distinction), Bachelor’s Degree in the Second Class Lower Division with a completed Masters Degree, HND Upper Credit with a completed Masters Degree.

”Have graduated from an accredited university/polytechnic/monotechnic not earlier than 2019,” the company stated in announcing the recruitment exercise.

The oil firm also stated that candidates must have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, and not be “more than 28 years of age as of 31st December 2024”.

Applicants were also required to possess “good communications, computer, and interpersonal skills”.

According to the NNPC, disciplines required include sciences, engineering, business and management, social sciences, art and humanities, and law.

Our reporter confirms that the ongoing graduate trainee recruitment exercise of NNPC Limited has entered the interview stage after the CBT stage.

One of the HND graduates who was sent away told our reporter: “I applied for the graduate trainee programme and uploaded all required documents.

“I was shortlisted and was invited for the CBT via email, which I wrote and passed and was subsequently invited for the interview at NNPC towers in Abuja.

“I travelled from my state of residence to the FCT to attend the interview today but was chased away by NNPC securities that I do not have a Master’s degree.

“I did not understand why I would be invited for the interview after passing the CBT when the NNPC knew I was not qualified. It is sad I have to travel down here to be chased away”.

Our reporter spoke with several HND graduates who shared similar experiences.

When contacted, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye said at no time did the company send any HND graduate away.

Soneye stressed that the NNPC made the requirements for the graduate trainee programme public and could not have sent any qualified candidate away.

“It is false. We did not send any applicants away. The graduate trainee recruitment exercise is going on smoothly.

“We sent out only candidates who did not meet the advertised criteria, specifically those with an HND Upper Credit without a Master’s degree.

“Candidates with an HND Distinction have been attending interviews, and there is no discrimination in the selection process. The process remains transparent and fair,” he said.

  • Benue lifts suspension on SUBEB recruitment

Benue lifts suspension on SUBEB recruitment

The Benue State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension placed on the recruitment exercise of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for the overall interest of the applicants.

The suspension was lifted after the Ad-Hoc Committee Investigating Controversies Surrounding Recruitment of Primary School Teachers by the board concluded its assignment.

Chairman of the committee, Mr Cephas Dyako (LP/Konshisha), stated that a law to provide for the compulsory free universal basic education and for purposes connected therewith in 2018, section 7, 1 (b).

He said that the law allowed the board to recruit, appoint, promote, and discipline teaching and non-teaching staff on grade levels 07 and above.

He said that a total number of 74,574 candidates applied for the recruitment, while a total number of 48,895 candidates sat for the Computer-Based Test (CBT), and a total number of 7,224 candidates were shortlisted for the oral interview.

He said that the allocation of cutoff marks to each local government area was on the basis of performance, which was to avoid overdominance of some highly performed local governments over others in the recruitment exercise.

He further said that based on the needs assessment carried out by the board, no local government got less than 200 candidates shortlisted for the oral interview so far except Makurdi and Ohimini local governments, who got 144 and 126, respectively.

He added that a total of 2,476 were yet to be shortlisted due to the suspension of the recruitment exercise.

He disclosed that candidates were not originally shortlisted on the basis of their local government of origin, therefore, not reflecting the state character.

Mr Blessed Onah (PDP/Oju I) said that as a result of the investigation carried out by the committee, there would be equity in the recruitment exercise.

The Speaker, Mr Hyacinth Dajo, said that the board should reassess the recruitment process and ensure compliance with extant laws based on fairness, equity, and justice to reflect state character.

Dajo commended Gov. Hyacinth Alia for approving the recruitment of primary school teachers to bridge the existing gaps in public primary schools.

He said that the board does ensure that applicants are shortlisted and employed strictly in their local governments of origin, taking note of the financial autonomy granted to local governments.

He charged all government appointees to desist from actions that undermine the authority of the assembly.

  • SUBEB chairman ordered to step aside over recruitment investigation

SUBEB chairman ordered to step aside over recruitment investigation

The Benue House of Assembly, presided over by its Speaker, Hyacinth Dajo, ordered the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Grace Adagba, to step aside from her official duties forthwith.

The lawmakers took the decision during Thursday’s plenary to allow the house to investigate the recruitment exercise embarked upon by the board.

The resolution followed a motion moved by the Chief Whip, Mr Peter Ipusu (APC/Katsina-Ala West).

Ipusu said that the house had earlier adopted the resolution directing the chairman of the board to suspend the ongoing recruitment of primary school teachers to allow for investigation into controversies surrounding the exercise, but the directive was ignored.

The chief whip stressed that a day after the resolution was duly conveyed, the chairman released a statement indicating that new cut-off marks had been allocated to the various local governments based on their performance in the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

He stated that the board subsequently shortlisted additional names for physical screening.

Ipusu said that he was worried that the statement released by SUBEB was not only reactionary but also disparaging of the honour of the assembly and its resolutions.

Mr Alfred Berger (APC/Makurdi North), who seconded the motion, stated that the chairman lacked the integrity to continue to pilot the affairs of the board.

Berger added that the law establishing the board gave powers to the Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) to recruit teachers, emphasising that the process was decentralised and the department of quality assurance of the board only supervised it.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mr Saater Tiseer pleaded with his colleagues to give the chairman a fair hearing on the matter.

Tiseer added that the day she was to appear before the house, she was at the assembly by 10 am as requested.

He advised his colleagues not to make decisions based on prejudice, adding that they should take actions in line with the constitution.

The counter motion was seconded by Anthony Agom (PDP/Okpokwu), stating that the chairman should be allowed to explain herself.

The Speaker, Hyacinth Dajo, subsequently asked the Clerk, Mr John Hwande, to divide the house, and the members who voted in favour of the initial motion were 21, while five voted for the counter motion.

Dajo stated that the chairman should step aside and hand over to the board’s permanent member 1 to allow the house to carry out its investigation.

The speaker further constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the exercise and report to the house within seven days.

  • Benue Assembly orders suspension of teachers recruitment

Benue Assembly orders suspension of teachers recruitment

The Benue State House of Assembly has directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to halt the ongoing teachers recruitment process.

The House gave the order following a motion by Mr Douglas Akya (APC/Makurdi South) on Thursday during plenary in Makurdi. The motion was co-moved by Mr Peter Ipusu (APC/Katsina-Ala West).

Akya noted that the job advertisement placed by the board gave Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelors in Education (B. ED) as requirements for employment.

He said that in November 2024, the board released names of successful applicants in the Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted and subsequently scheduled the applicants for screening beginning from December 2, 2024.

He further stated that the board had shortlisted graduates who do not have qualifications in education contrary to the requirements specified in the
advertisement released prior to the test conducted.

“This is in addition to the failure of the board to shortlist qualified candidates for the exercise. The manipulative picture portrayed by this development goes against the governor’s good intention to uplift the standard of education and revamp public primary schools,” Akya said.

He commended Gov. Hyacinth Alia for approving the employment of teachers by the board to revive basic education in Benue.

He urged the house to invite the chairman of the board to explain the circumstances surrounding the sudden introduction of those with non-professional degrees in education with cut-off marks of just 25 per cent for the same aptitude test that NCE and B.ED holders were required.

Mr Alfred Berger (APC/Makurdi North) seconded the motion, stressing that their constituents were depending on them to sanitise the system.

Mr Elias Audu (APC/Gwer East), during his contribution, called for the suspension of the recruitment exercise indefinitely.

Mr Peter Ipusu (APC/Katsina-Ala West) corroborated Audu, adding that a committee be set to investigate the process of the exercise.

Mr Jonathan Agbidye (APC/Katsina-Ala East) said that it was the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) that was saddled with the responsibility of recruiting teachers.

Agbidye added that the authority usually conducts the recruitment of the junior staff, stating that even the senior staff, the authority conducts the exercise while the SUBEB supervises.

The Speaker, Hyacinth Dajo, directed the board to suspend the exercise indefinitely. Dajo further directed the chairman of the board to appear before the house on Tuesday at executive session.
