Immigration raises alarm over circulating fake employment letters

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on Thursday drew the attention of Nigerians to fake and invalid employment letters in circulation purportedly issued by the service.

The NIS made this known in a statement by its Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Kenneth Udo, in Abuja.

Udo warned desperate job seekers to exercise caution so as not to fall victim to the fraudsters.

According to him, the fraudulent letters falsely claim that the recipients have been offered employment with the NIS.

He said “the Service categorically denies any involvement in this fraudulent scheme and refutes the misinformation being spread on social media platforms regarding an ongoing recruitment/replacement exercise.

“The NIS shall continue to ensure that any unscrupulous elements engaging in this criminality will be made to face the wrath of the law.

“The public is hereby advised to report these scammers to the nearest NIS office or law enforcement agencies.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment exercise is exclusively advertised through reputable national dailies, television broadcasts, and our official website, http://www.immigration.gov.ng.

Udo said that the Service was resolutely committed to safeguarding the interest of Nigerians and upholding the integrity of its recruitment processes.

  • ‘WAHALA’ Brewing: PSC staff union demands resignation of IGP over constables recruitment

The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission, has called on President Bola Tinubu, to relieve the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over his alleged meddlesomeness in the recent recruitment of police constables.

During a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, the union also alleged that some top officers within the Nigerian Police Force, tried to smuggle names during the recruitment process.

The aggrieved members of the union while singing protest songs, described the reactions of the NPF as diversionary tactics.

According to them, NPF intends to prevent the president from noticing the unpreparedness of the police training schools, to handle the training of the recruits, owing to the sorry states of the facilities.

The move comes after the PSC recently released 10,000 names of successful candidates employed from the recent recruitment exercise by the commission.

The list was later rejected by the NPF, who described the recruitment process as fraudulent.

  • Police reject constables recruitment list released by PSC

Police reject constables recruitment list released by PSC

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rejected the 2022/23 police constables recruitment list released by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

In a statement released by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the NPF said the police constables recruitment list is flooded with non-applicants, and that the recruitment process was riddled with corruption.

The Police has, therefore, dissociated itself from the published list and called for a review that will be transparent and credible.

The statement reads in full below:

The Nigeria Police Force has raised alarm on the irregularities and alleged corruption of the recently released names of successful candidates in the ongoing 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise. This became necessary upon being inundated with a series of complaints and allegations of corruption raised by unsuspecting candidates and stakeholders on the irregularities that marred the exercise most especially the disappearance of the names of screened candidates who were successful to the last stage.

Upon careful scrutiny of the list released on the PSC portal, it was discovered that

    i) Several names of persons purported to be names of successful candidates are those who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise.

ii) The published list contains several names of candidates who failed either the Computer Based Test (CBT) or the physical screening exercise or both.

iii) There are those who made it to the last stage of the exercise but were disqualified having been found Medically unfit through the standardised medical test but who also made the list of successful candidates as published by the PSC.

vi) Most worrisome is the allegation of financial dealings and corrupt practices leading to the outcome where unqualified and untrainable individuals have been shortlisted.

The Inspector General of Police had on 10th June 2024 written a letter of objection to the list addressed to the Chairman of the Commission, citing the discoveries listed above. The reaction of the IGP was without prejudice to the power of the Commission to recruit for the police as ruled by the Supreme court but this power does not include the power to recruit unqualified and untrained individuals for the police. Noting that it is the police that bears the brunt of recruitment of unqualified individuals and not the PSC. The same people who recruited anyhow for the police today will turn round to accuse the police tomorrow of inefficiency when their recruits start messing up.

The Police therefore has since dissociated itself from the published list and called for a review that will be transparent and credible.

It will be recalled that the leadership of the Police Service Commission, after the pronouncement of the Supreme Court ruling on the powers of the Commission to recruit for the Police, constituted a Joint Recruitment Board, to be headed by one of the Commissioners of the PSC, with the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Training and Development in the Police Force as its Secretary. But surprisingly, the Board was crippled and never allowed to carry out its mandate, insomuch that even the final list was not consented to by the Board.

The Nigeria Police Force therefore takes exception to this unpleasant development and calls for a total review of the process with a view to recruiting qualified, competent, trainable and productive hands into the Nigeria Police Force, in line with the vision of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration on police reform.

The NPF hereby reiterates that we are not unconcerned about the plights and ordeals of prospective recruits, who have been subjected to all forms of rigorous screening exercise, assuring that it is our commitment to ensure that the process is thoroughly reviewed, stands fruitful and successful for the betterment of the Nigeria Police, and by extension the country.

Police recruitment: PSC denies releasing list of successful candidates

The Police Service Commission(PSC) has disowned a list of successful candidates for  recruitment into constable cadre of the Nigerian Police Force being circulated on social media.

Mr Ikechukwu Ani, PSC’s Public Relations Officer, made this clarification in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The commission disowns the purported list circulating in some unofficial quarters meant to represent the names of successful applicants from the just concluded recruitment exercise.’’

He said that the commission was also aware of a press statement said to have emanated from Force Public Relations Officer on  the list of successful applicants which had been disowned by the commission.

“The commission, however, wishes to direct that the Police Force should investigate the source of the fake news and bring the perpetrators to book.’’

According to him, the Joint Recruitment Board is the sole authority empowered by the constitution to recruit officers into the Nigeria Police.

“The powers followed a judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Suit No: SC/CV/773/2020 between the Nigeria Police Force & ors v. Police Service Commission and Anor.’’

The spokesman said the commission would not abdicate its constitutional mandate to recruit without accommodating relevant stakeholders in the process.

He said that any attempt to release a list of successful candidates into the Nigeria Police Force at the moment would be contemptuous to constitutional and judicial pronouncements.

“The list of successful candidates for the 2022 recruitment exercise will soon be released by the commission,’’ he said.

Ani said that the commission had set up Police Recruitment Board to ensure to ensure credibility and inclusiveness in the conduct of the recruitment exercise.

He said the board was made up of representatives of relevant stakeholders including PSC, Nigeria Police Force, Ministry of Police Affairs, Federal Character Commission, Police Colleges and Police Trust Fund.
