Police Service Commission disowns trending recruitment invitation

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has disowned a trending social media publication requesting candidates seeking recruitment as Constables in the Nigeria Police Force to pay N2,000 for screening.

PSC’s spokesman, Mr Ikechukwu Ani, stated in Abuja on Tuesday that: “the commission disowns and disassociates itself from the publication which obviously is fictitious and misleading.’’

Ani stressed that the PSC had stated earlier that the on-going recruitment was entirely free from the registration stage to the conclusion stage which is the medical examination.

He stated also that the decision had not changed and the PSC would not request for the payment of N2,000 to screen candidates.

Ani added that the PSC would no longer tolerate meddlesomeness by fraudsters bent on compromising the recruitment.

He urged prospective candidates to ignore the misleading messages as the Police Recruitment Board was currently sending messages to successful candidates with detailed information on requirements for the screening.

Ani assured that the PSC would ensure that the exercise was transparent, merit-based and it complied with the demands of the Federal Character principles.

He enjoined candidates to resist the temptation to cut corners in an attempt to succeed as strict regulations had been put in place to protect the exercise.

How Ministry of Water Resources spent N4bn on recruitment of 100 personnel

The House of Representatives Public Account Committee has queried the Ministry of Water Resources for spending N4 billion on the recruitment of 100 personnel for a period of three months.

The money was said to be for a project known as Youth Engagement for Sanitation (YES) across the 774 local government areas in the country.

Rep. Bamidele Salam, the chairman of the committee, issued the query while investigating the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government on the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 intervention funds from 2020–2022.

He also queried the Ministry for reportedly sinking a borehole between N25 million and N12.5 million per unit, describing it as unacceptable.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, told the Committee that the boreholes were sunk in some locations across the states of the Federation and the FCT.

“In total, 299 new water schemes were embarked upon during the period, just as a total of 188 old and abandoned solar boreholes were resuscitated during the period,” he said.

He said that each state of the federation received 10 million naira in intervention items.

The committee member took it upon himself to request the existence of such projects to ascertain their authenticity and avoid mixing them up with projects executed by members.

The committee members also sought to know the modality of recruitment of the personnel, the full list of the youths involved, their account numbers, and the schedule of payments sent to their respective banks.

Salam, however, said that the committee would embark on project verification, adding that it would not only be limited to the Ministry but to other MDAs who claimed to have done one project or another.

“The Committee will need to go and see exactly what is on the ground so that we can have value for money.”

He announced the states to be visited for the physical verification to include: Osun and Ogun in the South West; Akwa Ibom and Edo in the South; and Imo and Ebonyi in the South East.

Others include Kwara, Nasarawa, and Benue in North Central; Katsina and Sokoto in the North West; and Bauchi and Adamawa in the North East.

Recruitment: Army woos Delta, Rivers indigenes to join military

The Nigeria Army in Rivers say it has commenced its recruitment campaign to woo indigent youths from the state to join the army.

It said both Rivers and Delta indigenes had the lowest representation in recent recruitments in the army.

Brig.-Gen. Timi Mackintosh, Team Leader, Department of Administration, Sensitisation and Advertisement, Nigeria Army 86 Intake, said this at a meeting with the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Rivers, Tammy Danagogo in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

He said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, worried by the low representation of Rivers indigenes in the army, sent his team to encourage them to join the service.

“So, Rivers and Delta states in the South South, particularly, Rivers are lacking when it comes to recruitment into the Nigerian Army.

“For 84 and 85 regular intakes, Rivers state in particular did not make up to 60 per cent of its own quota.

“So, the COAS deemed it fit that we should visit you (Danagogo) to assist us speak to indigenes to join the army,” he said.

Mackintosh said the army would take care of those willing to join the service in the area of academics, and medical, among others.

“Our minimum requirement is four credits. However, there are people especially in the lower cadre who joined the military with four credits, but today they are going for their PhD and Masters.

“They achieved this because the army sent them to school.

“Some people might feel that they cannot make it into the army because they don’t know anybody, but the truth is that you don’t need to know anyone to join.

“Candidates just have to meet the basic criteria which includes being a Nigerian; proof they are Rivers indigenes, and physically, medically and psychologically fit, among others to join,” he said.

Also speaking, Danagogo commended the army for its interest in recruiting Rivers people into the service and called on the youth to come out in their numbers to join them.

He said the state government would immediately start sensitisation campaign to encourage the people to join the ongoing army recruitment.

The SSG attributed the low turnout of the people in the recruitment exercises over the years to ignorance and lack of information.

“As a government, we look forward to every avenue to empower and gainfully employ our people.

“The military is one of the elite groups that every government and father would want his children to belong to, and so, we will tell our people.

“One area we feel that we are being marginalised is in the enrolment of our citizens into the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) to become officers,” he said.

Danagogo pleaded with the army hierarchy to provide opportunities for its indigenes to join the NDA as well as notify the state government when such opportunities arise.

Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, the Director of Naval Information, said this in a statement in Abuja.

Ayo-Vaughan said the exercise was conducted in three centres across the country, namely; Lagos, Rivers and Kaduna States.

He said the list of successful candidates had not been released and that no form of invitation for training, via text message had also been disseminated by the Nigerian Navy.

‘’The alarming rate of circulation of fake information by unscrupulous individuals, regarding enlistment or recruitment into Navy is quite worrisome.

Recruitment: Navy warns applicants to be wary of fraudsters

The Nigerian Navy (NN) has warned applicants undergoing its Basic Training School (NNBTS) Batch 35 Recruitment Exercise holding in Lagos, Rivers and Kaduna States to avoid being duped by fraudsters.

The Navy gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its Director, Naval Information,  Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan.

Ayo-Vaughan said the attention of the navy high command had been drawn to the sharp activities of some unscrupulous persons regarding the ongoing exercise.

According to him, these unscrupulous persons have been deceiving innocent applicants and defrauding them of huge sums of money with promises of recruiting them successfully into the NN.

“Pertinently, it is to be noted that recruitment into the NN from online registration to the end of the recruitment process is entirely free.

“The NN has not contracted or authorised any agent or individual to collect money or any incentive from applicants in order to help them in the recruitment process or placement as successful candidate(s) for training.

“Accordingly, applicants and their guardians are advised to report the activities of these unscrupulous individuals to the nearest Naval Unit or Nigeria Police Station.

“This information is for NNBTS Batch 35 applicants and the general public to note,” he said.
