EPL: Why referee didn’t award penalty to Liverpool against Arsenal – PGMOL

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has given detailed report why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty against Arsenal on Saturday at Anfield.

Gunners captain, Martin Odegaard appeared to grab the ball as he fell down in the penalty box.

According to Sky Sports, the PGMOL stated a penalty was not awarded because “Odegaard’s arm is moving towards the body and not the ball as he goes down.”

Referee Chris Kavanagh waved play on after the incident.

After VAR official David Coote checked the incident, he backed Kavanagh’s call to not award a spot-kick.

Arsenal had taken an early lead through Gabriel. Mohammed Salah then equalized for the hosts.

  • Referees lament non-payment of allowances after Basketball Premier League zonal playoffs ends

Referees lament non-payment of allowances after Basketball Premier League zonal playoffs ends

The referees and other officials who worked at the Ibadan Zonal Playoffs of the 2023 Nigeria Basketball Premier League’s Atlantic Conference left the venue disappointed on Saturday.
The officials left the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium venue of the competition without being paid their allowances as well as the feeding, transportation and accommodation subsidies they were entitled to.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the game officials had on Friday embarked on a strike to press home their demand for the payment after officiating for six days.
But they were prevailed upon to change their mind after about an hour of pleas and an assurance given by the Oyo State Basketball Association.
However, they were yet to receive any payment by Saturday afternoon when the competition ended, with the officials returning to their bases in Oyo State, Ogun and Delta in dejected mood.

”This is terrible and uninspiring. I am not happy at all, because I borrowed money to be here. Now, how do I pay back?” one of the officials said.

Another official, who asked not to be named, stated that the officials were hoping that the organisers and the host state Basketball Association were going to keep to their words.
”The host Association people, as well as some team officials and players, pleaded with us not to abandon the matches.
”They said doing that would have harmed them and the game. But, everyone can now see that the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) people are not people you can take for their words,” the official said.
Bunmi Awosika, Vice-Chairman of Oyo State Basketball Association, who was one of those who intervened to halt the game officials’ strike on Friday, had a piece of advice for the organisers.
He urged the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to always ensure they put in place everything needed for competitions before their commencement.
“For example, there are still some uncertainties concerning the location of the next phase and we understand this competition is going to begin on Nov. 4.
”So, that means that once again there is not enough time for preparations.
“All these time issues, as well as match officials allowances, should therefore have been settled earlier in the season so that everyone can make adequate preparations,” he said.
NAN reports that Kwara Falcons of Ilorin and Ebun Comets of Lagos on Saturday in Ibadan finished with 11 points each for both sides to qualify for the league’s next stage.
They qualified alongside Hoops and Read of Lagos and Oluyole Warriors of Ibadan, after both sides finished with 10 points each.
All four teams have qualified for the next phase of the league, the Atlantic Conference finals, following a seven-day contest which had seven teams participating.
NAN reports that the competition was held at the Indoor Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan from Sunday till Saturday.

Ban abusive Van Dijk for four matches – Ex-ref

Ex-Prem ref Mark Halsey says Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk should be banned for four matches after his dismissal at Newcastle.

Van Dijk will miss one game after being sent off in the first-half of Liverpool’s 2-1 win on Tyneside.

But Halsey wrote for The Sun: “We must not tolerate any more abuse of match officials.

“So the Football Association has to clamp down and punish Virgil Van Dijk for his unacceptable behaviour at Newcastle on Sunday.

“The new Liverpool captain fell well below the standards set by one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

“I know Van Dijk’s only been captain for three games since Jordan Henderson moved to Saudi Arabia but if I was Jurgen Klopp I would already be thinking, ‘Is Virgil setting the right example?’

“Van Dijk’s abusive actions at St James’ Park also have an impact on the wider footballing world.

“The Dutch defender was correctly sent off by referee John Brooks for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity on Alexander Isak.

“Van Dijk refused to accept the decision and took a total of two minutes 28 seconds to get down the tunnel from the moment he was dismissed.

“Van Dijk will rightly receive a one-match ban for the straight red card but I believe his suspension should be increased.

“Of course, this will depend on Brooks’ official report but the abusive and insulting language used by the new Reds leader could be worthy of another red card and result in an additional three-match ban.

“That would rule out Van Dijk for four matches in total – a fitting punishment for his poor conduct.”

NFF saddened by death of Referee Kingsley Nnaemeke Eneogwe

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death on Thursday of a Nigeria Premier Football League referee, Dr. Kingsley Nnaemeka Eneogwe in an automobile accident on the Abuja-Kogi-Enugu road.

“This is one death that gnaws at the heart real tight. A young man with his life ahead of him, someone doing so well in his profession and in his avocation, and had worked hard to earn the respect of colleagues and acquaintances across board. I am in deep shock and sorrow,” a flustered President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau said in Algeria where he is attending the ongoing African Nations Championship as a guest of the Confederation of African Football.

Gusau added: “I pray that Almighty God will forgive him his sins and give him eternal rest, and also grant those he has left behind including his immediate family, friends and relations, members of the refereeing family, the NRA and Nigeria Football as a whole the fortitude to bear this big loss.”

  • Liverpool boss Klopp slams referee after Brentford defeat

Liverpool boss Klopp slams referee after Brentford defeat

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has slammed match officials and Brentford’s tactics after last night’s defeat in the Premier League fixture.

Klopp was unhappy about the “pushing” and “holding” inside the box leading to the opening goal and in another case where Yoane Wissa saw another strike disallowed from a corner.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “Of course I’m not 100 percent happy, I will have to watch it back again and again because the two corners where they scored, one of them was offside or whatever it was, and then the other one, of course, we don’t behave perfectly.

“But they are stretching the rules in this moment, they are pushing, holding and everything and the refs, that’s obviously what you can do, that’s why it’s really difficult and we could have done better.

“The third goal, I have no clue how he can only not whistle for a foul in that situation where the defender has been given a push in the back. You lose control and you go down, then they hide behind the phrase ‘it’s not clear and obvious.’ These are the situations, he has to explain that, if somebody were to ask him.”

He added: “We had a meeting before the season where they told us not the foul on Ibou, but the behaviour in the box, the refs will whistle, but unfortunately they don’t do it. Do I expect it? I don’t expect anything in our favour, I just think a foul is a foul, holding is holding and pushing is pushing.

“That’s a few things that are allowed and then not allowed, and refs see them, they whistle for it, if they don’t then they cannot whistle for it, that’s how it is.

“Maybe there’s a reason why they are so successful from set pieces but still concede a lot of defensive goals around set pieces, because there you cannot do the same stuff because it would be a penalty. That’s why they do well, but there are some rules and that’s what you have to see.”

Sacked referee to officiate EPL game after 4 years

Bobby Madley will referee an English Premier League (EPL) match for the first time in four years on Saturday after losing his job over a controversial video in 2018.

Madley was sacked by the refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after sending a video mocking a disabled person to a friend.

He returned to English football in 2020, taking charge of matches at League One and League Two levels, and has officiated 10 games in the Championship this season.

The 37-year-old is set to take charge of Brentford’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to a list of officials for this weekend’s fixtures on the Premier League’s website.

Madley’s brother Andy, who is also a referee, will take charge of Brighton & Hove Albion’s home game against Chelsea on the same day.
