UEFA looking into referee report after PSG exit at Real Madrid

Europe’s ruling body UEFA has received the referee report from Wednesday’s Champions League match between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain amid alleged misbehaviour from PSG top officials.

UEFA said on Thursday it was looking into the report, without giving details.

French side PSG lost the last 16 tie 3-2 on aggregate after a 3-1 defeat in Spain following Karim Benzema’s hat-trick.

But the French team’s camp has lamented that their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, had been fouled before Real’s equaliser for 1-1.

Media reports in Spain and France had indicated that PSG sports director Leonardo and club president Nasser al-Khelaifi had attempted to get into the dressing room of the match officials.

The reports had centred around Dutch referee Danny Makkelie.

There were conflicting reports about what exactly happened and some said that al-Khelaifi and Leonardo were in the dressing room.

NPFL: Referee escapes mob attack after Rangers draw with Wikki Tourists

A handful of football fans in Bauchi on Sunday went berserk and attacked the referee of the match between Wikki Tourists Football Club and visiting Rangers International of Enugu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred after the match, a 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League

(NPFL) Match Day 11 fixture, ended goalless.

The football fans were unhappy with the result of the match at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium.

The furious fans rained abuses on the referee, whose name could not be ascertained as at the time of this report, accusing him of bad officiating.

They threw stones at him and pelted him and other match officials with sachets of water.

The referee was however rescued by policemen and other security agents in the stadium, after scaring away the mob.

Aliyu Illelah, one of the fans, said the referee was not sincere in his officiating, explaining that that was why the fans got provoked and wanted to attack him.

Another fan, Musa Manager, however said their action was barbaric.

”What they (the angry fans) did was not right. While the Wikki Tourists’ players did their best, the referee was very realistic in his officiating,” he said.

Meanwhile, the head coach of Rangers International, Abdul Maikaba, refused to speak on either the incident or the match, saying “it is not safe to conduct interviews”.

On his part, the Technical Adviser of Wikki Tourists, Kabiru Dogo, could not be located for any comment because of the tense situation in the stadium.

AFCON: God told me to end Tunisia, Mali match early – Referee, Sikazwe

Janny Sikazwe, the referee who blew for full-time early in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations clash between Tunisia and Mali, has claimed he could have died of heatstroke if the match went on any longer.

The Zambian official sparked controversy when he ended the group-stage fixture 13 seconds early on January 12.

Sikazwe had been forced to restart the match after blowing his full-time whistle five minutes before the full 90 minutes was up.

Tunisia were losing 1-0 and playing against 10 men when Sikazwe ended the match early for a second time. It left members of their coaching staff furious and they stormed onto the pitch to confront the referee.

However, Sikazwe has now thanked God for saving him from death.

“I have seen people going for duties outside the country and come back in a casket,” he told reporters after arriving back in Zambia.

“I was very close to coming back like that.

“I was lucky I didn’t go into a coma. It would have been a very different story.

“The doctors told me my body was not cooling down. It would have been just a little time before [I would have gone] into a coma, and that would have been the end.

“I think God told me to end the match. He saved me.”

EPL referee axed after controversial Liverpool penalty

The Premier League has not assigned any fixture to referee Kevin Friend for the next round of fixtures.

Friend was in charge of the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace, which saw the Reds win 3-1 at Selhurst Park.

With the score at 2-1, Diogo Jota raced clear and bundled into Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita with minutes remaining.

Friend awarded a penalty before VAR begun checking to confirm. Then the man at Stokely Park, Craig Pawson, advised him to go to the monitor.

As has been the case this season, Friend analysed the slow motion replays and changed his decision.

It was the 49th time a referee had been asked to consult the pitch-side monitor and every time the original decision has been changed.

Referee Sikazwe in centre of controversy as Mali beat Tunisia

Wahbi Khazri had a second-half penalty kick saved as Tunisia fell to a contentious 0-1 loss to Mali in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opening match on Wednesday.

But the Group F match in Limbe was one in which referee Janny Sikazwe was at the centre of controversy.

Sikazwe awarded both sides a penalty kick in the second half and dismissed Mali forward El Bilal Toure before blowing for full-time early to spark angry scenes at Stade Limbe.

After a low-key first half that saw neither side go particularly close, Ibrahima Kone converted past debutant goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said from 12 yards.

This was after Ellyes Skhiri blocked Boubakar Kouyate’s shot with his hand.

Tunisia, the fourth-highest ranked African side, toiled without truly being able to test Ibrahim Mounkoro in the clash between the sides expected to advance.

They are expected to win the top two spots ahead of Gambia and Mauritania.

But the 2004 tournament winners were given a lifeline 16 minutes from time when Sikazwe again pointed to the penalty kick spot when Khazri’s cross hit Moussa Djenepo on the hand.

But the Saint-Etienne striker’s penalty kick was saved by Mounkoro.

After the referee initially blew for full-time in the 85th minute, play resumed and Mali substitute Toure was shown a straight red card for catching Dylan Bronn late on.

Sikazwe again brought play to a halt 10 seconds early in spite of a raft of substitutions and a cooling break.

Klopp slams referees as West Ham move third in EPL

West Ham United leapfrogged Liverpool into third place on the Premier League table with a 3-2 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side at London Stadium on Sunday.

The Reds went behind after just four minutes when Alisson flapped at Pablo Fornals’ corner amidst pressure from Angelo Ogbonna and failed to stop the ball from entering his own goal.

In what was a scrappy first-half, West Ham were lucky not to be undermanned when Aaron Cresswell caught Jordan Henderson with a nasty tackle. Conversely, Diogo Jota escaped punishment for an elbow on Ogbonna.

Liverpool were back level before half-time thanks to a sumptuous free kick from just outside the box from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

David Moyes’ clearly instructed his side to make corners difficult for Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper and they almost went ahead shortly after half-time when Craig Dawson headed off the bar.

But the Hammers regained the lead midway through the first-half when Fornals was slipped through on goal and Alisson was unable to keep out his shot.

Kurt Zouma put Moyes and London Stadium into delirium when he was left unmarked to header home a corner at the back post.

Substitute Divock Origi came off the bench to fire in an excellent goal to give Liverpool a chance.

Klopp’s side should have had at least a point after Sadio Mane missed a free diving header from six yards out.

Speaking after the game, Klopp was livid with Ogbonna’s slight contact with Alisson for the first goal and Cresswell’s tackle on Henderson.

“The first goal is a foul on the goalie,” he told Sky Sports. “The arm goes against Alisson’s arm so how can he catch the ball when someone pulls his arm away. It makes no sense. It’s the typical excuse that VAR says it’s not clear and obvious but then what do you need?

“What can [Alisson] do? That’s why the goalie is protected in moments. If a player goes up with his arm for a goalie that’s an important position of the body and if that’s in the way how can he make a save?

“People will say I’m looking for excuses, I’m not. I accept we’re not too good to lose football games. Today we lost it, that’s not nice but I accept it. But when we speak about situations in a game you just need normal decisions from a referee. He didn’t do that.

“Cresswell? For me it’s a reckless challenge. Even though he touches the ball, you can’t go in like that as anything can happen. You can say he touched the ball but you have to control your body.

“Those two situations were influential in the game but in the end West Ham fought for the three points. They are not responsible for the decisions the VAR made.

He added in the post-match press conference: “It’s a clear foul on Alisson, how can it not be? The arm from Ogbonna is there. I don’t know who is VAR today.

“The ref made it easy for himself, and said let’s see what the VAR said, they said it’s not clear and obvious. It was really strange.”

CAR coach accuses referee of helping Super Eagles win

Coach of the Central African Republic, Raoul Savoy, has blamed their 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in a 2022 World Cup qualifier on poor officiating.

Having defeated the Super Eagles 1-0 in Lagos, the Wild Beasts were hoping to complete a stunning double over their highly-rated opponents.

However, Leon Balogun and Victor Osimhen scored late in the first half, to seal maximum points for the three-time African champions.

But Savoy claims Nigeria earned their result because they were helped by Rwandan referee Louis Hakizimana.

“My players did well and I’m very proud of their performance.

“Nigeria played with 12 men because the referee helped them to win.

“The first goal was from an offside position and my goalkeeper was fouled for the second goal.

“We did not concede against Nigeria over the two legs, they scored with the help of the referee,” Savoy told the media.
