Dowen College: Late Sylvester Oromoni’s father reacts to bail granted to suspects

Mr Sylvester Oromoni (Snr), father of the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College Lagos has said that he is surprised that bail was granted to five arrested suspected before completion of the police investigation.

Oromoni while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Delta insisted that the 21-day remand period granted the police to investigate the death of his son is not due until December 28, 2021, and he was surprised to hear that they have been released on bail.

“The police are saying that they are not done with their investigation and granting these boys bail will not help with their investigation and they were even planning that after the 21 days if they are not done with the investigation, they will ask for an extension.

“We are surprised that they were granted bail when the days they gave them have not expired. As a parent we are not comfortable with that, although we cannot question the judge,” he said.

Oromoni added that the autopsy results are ready and will be made public in due time.

He also alleged that the school authorities in connivance with the parents of the accused may be working against his quest in seeking justice for his late.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari, Inspector General of Police, the Lagos State police commissioner, and the Delta State government to ensure that justice prevails on the matter.

A Chief Magistrates’ court in the Yaba area of Lagos on Tuesday granted bail to five students of Dowen College following a charge of conspiracy and homicide made against them by the police.

The police charged the minors following the alleged murder of their schoolmate, Sylvester Oromoni, aged 12.

On December 9, the five minors were remanded in a juvenile home over the death of their schoolmate who was allegedly attacked in a case of bullying while in school.

Chief Magistrate Olatunbosun Adeola, who heard the bail application granted them bail in the sum of N1m each. The magistrate also ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Parents of abducted Kaduna students lecture government on how to secure their release

Parents of the abducted students of Federal College Of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State on Thursday advised the state government to negotiate with the bandits and not use force to secure the release of the students.

Sani Friday, who is also representative of the affected parents, disclosed this on Thursday during a monitored interview on Channels Television.

He said the parents demand action from the state and Federal government rather than the long silence they have been witnessing.

“We want the government to do something. They are not negotiating; they have not put up any machinery for the release of the students.

“The best way we want the government to go about this is to first of all negotiate. If they want to put up security measures, it should be after this,” Friday said.

The parent expressed fear over the plan of the government to use force to rescue the victims. According to Friday, this could be disastrous.

“One of the fears we have is that if the government feels that they can use force to bring out these children it will be a disastrous move because these bandits are well equipped and may decide to eliminate the children if they discover that the government wants to use force on them,” he added.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the students were abducted from their hostels on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at about 11:00 pm, by gunmen who stormed the college dressed in military uniform.

Meanwhile, families, students, and lecturers of the 39 students have embarked on a peaceful rally and prayers for the victims.

Exactly two weeks after the abduction the students are yet to be released a situation which the affected families are worried about.

The rally and prayers are held within the college premises at Afaka, Kaduna State.

The parents, students, and staff first visit the mosque where some students and their staff led the prayer.

They later moved to the College Chapel and prayed for the safe return of the students.

Zamfara schoolgirl secures father’s release after meeting him in kidnappers’ den

The father of one of the abducted Jangebe school girls, who himself had been in captivity, regained his freedom on Monday night with tales of sadness and joy.

Mallam Iliya Gwaram, who was brought to Government House, Gusau around 9 p.m. on Monday, said he told his daughter not to recognise him in the den of their abductors.

Gwaram, rescued along with nine other victims, including nursing mothers and three toddlers, was brought in in a heavily guarded motorcade.

He said: “I have been in captivity with these other people for more than three months when on that Friday morning, l saw the school girls being brought into where we were camped by our abductors.

“At first, l didn’t know who they were or where they were coming from, until l saw the face of my scared daughter looking at me.

“I quickly told some of the girls who were brought along with her and sat near me to tell my child not to show any indication that she even knew me.

“The girls were brave enough and they kept our little secret up to the last day of their four days stay with us.

“l never cried in the whole of my life like l cried the day the girls were taken back because l felt it was the last time l would see my daughter.

“Fortunately and unknown to me, my daughter informed Gov. Matawalle of our whereabouts and the poor health conditions we were, which led to our freedom today as facilitated by the governor and his security people,” he said.

On whether money was given to secure their freedom, Gwaram said he did not know as all that mattered to them was to return to their homes.

“Look at those two women that we were rescued along with me, two million naira was said to have been raised by their relatives to give to the bandits more than two months ago.

“But the money could not be traced as it was suspected that it was a different gang that intercepted the man bringing the money and took it from him,” he said.

Gwaram further said his daughter would continue with her education.

“If she wasn’t educated, she would have exposed me when she saw me and that would have put the two of us in danger.

“I thank God for that and l will continue to pray that such a thing never happens to even my worst enemy,” Gwaram said.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that 279 of the Jangebe school girls, abducted by gunmen from their school on March 2, were released four days later after reported negotiations between the bandits and state government agents, security men and some repentant bandits.

We’re working hard to ensure kidnapped Edo commissioner is released unharmed – Police

The Police Command in Edo on Sunday said the command was on the trail of the kidnappers who abducted the Edo Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Emmanuel Agbale.

The spokesman of the command, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, stated this while fielding questions on the abducted commissioner from newsmen in Benin.

He said the Police command had deployed men from various departments, including anti-kidnapping and other special squads, to the trail of the kidnappers.

“We have deployed men from various departments and we are working to ensure that he is released unharmed,” stated Nwabuzor.

Meanwhile, the son of the abducted commissioner, Oise Agbale, said the kidnappers had contacted the family for a ransom to secure his release.

While not disclosing the amount demanded as ransom to secure his release, Oise, however, appealed for the unconditional release of his father.

Agbale was kidnapped on Friday along Benin – Ekpoma Highway, while his police orderly was killed in the process.

  • I don’t have powers to order Sowore’s release – Malami

The Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, on Monday, explained that he could not ask the Department of State Service to release Omoyele Sowore from custody.

The minister said he could not take a unilateral decision on the release of Sowore without recourse to the court, where the ‘RevolutionNow’ protests convener and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, are being prosecuted on charges of treasonable felony, among others.

This is contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, who stated that Malami was reacting to “the claim that a lawyer sent a letter to the AGF requesting the release of Mr. Sowore”.

The statement is supposedly a reaction to the letter by Sowore’s lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), sent to the AGF on Friday to demand the release of the convener of ‘RevolutionNow’ protests from the custody of the DSS.

Recall that TheNewsGuru, (TNG) published a report on the Falana’s letter dated December 13, 2019, following the Friday’s announcement by the AGF office that it had taken over the prosecution of the Sahara Reporters’ publisher and Bakare from the DSS.

Falana who heads the defence team of the two men informed Malami that Sowore had, since his rearrest on December 6, been kept in the DSS custody without the backing of any detention order of court or arrest warrant.

He stated that his letter became necessary after two lawyers in the team visited the DSS headquarters in Abuja to demand Sowore’s release but were advised to direct their request to Malami.

Malami said in the statement issued by Gwandu, “When parties submit their issues for determination to a court of law, they lack exclusivity of decision over such issues without recourse to the court.”

“We remain guided by the established tradition and will not take unilateral decision without recourse to the rule of law,” he added.

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, popularly called Shiites on Thursday protested at the ECOWAS building along Yakubu Gowon Crescent in the Asokoro area of Abuja demanding the immediate release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2015.

After making their grievances known to the officials, the aggrieved Shiites in their hundreds including men and women proceeded on a peaceful procession along the AYA axis calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to obey court orders and set the embattled El-Zakzaky and his wife free to seek urgent medical attention.

“We reiterate our call for the government to free Sheikh Zakzaky to enable him seek medical treatment abroad,” a man who appears to be their leader told TNG reporter at the scene of the protest.

Recall that El-Zakzaky’s lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) had secured the yet-to-be-obeyed December 2, 2016 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which ordered the release of El-Zakzaky, and his wife Zeinab, from the custody of the Department of State Service.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been detained by the DSS since December 2015

  • PDP demands unconditional release of Buba Galadima

PDP demands unconditional release of Buba Galadima

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the unconditional release of its member, Buba Galadima, who was allegedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS), on Sunday.

The PDP National Chairman, Mr Uche Secondus, in a statement he issued on Sunday in Abuja, said that the party condemned the arrest in the strongest possible terms.

He described Galadima a ‘patriot’, whose patriotism had been previously and strongly highlighted by various Nigerians including President Muhammadu Buhari.

“What crime has he committed? I answer my own question and say none. Mr Galadima is constitutionally guaranteed a right of freedom of speech and freedom after the speech.”

Secondus said that there were issues of concern in the country that no action had been taken by the law enforcement authorities, “yet a patriot and pro-democracy activist is arrested”.

He expressed concern that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council called for the arrest of Galadima at noon on Sunday and the arrest was duly carried out by the DSS an hour later.

“I call for the immediate release of Galadima by the DSS, even as I remind the service and other security agencies that their oath of allegiance was sworn to Nigeria and not to the APC,’ he said.

  • DSS commences nationwide release of untried detainees

Indications emerged on Saturday that the new leadership of the Department of State Security (DSS) may have started making good its promise to review cases of all detainees in its custody.

Seven Ijaw youths from Bayelsa State who were arrested two years ago and locked up in the organization’s cell since then were yesterday set free in Yenagoa.

The agency’s newly appointed Acting Director -General, Mr. Mathew Seiyefa, told reporters at his maiden press conference two weeks ago that he would review the cases of detainees with a view to setting free those who are not supposed to be held.

The seven Bayelsa men were brought from the DSS Headquarters in Abuja to Yenagoa at the weekend and released to their families who had gathered outside the agency’s office in the state capital to receive them.

Some of the suspects shed tears of joy in the warm embrace of their friends as they walked into freedom.

The suspects looked unkempt with overgrown beards, rough skin and dirty clothes.

One of them, who identified himself as Clinton Ohaigbofa, said suspects held without trial were being massively released across the country.

He hails from Ebedebiri in Ogbia Local Government Area.

He said they were held in underground cells in Abuja and went through untold hardship.

They were never charged to court, he said.

Narrating how they landed in DSS detention, he said: “We didn’t do anything. We were arrested on May 24th, 2016. We were taken to the JTF headquarters in Opolo and were later transferred to DMI, Abuja.

After interrogation, we were transferred to Defence Intelligence Agency. On August 26, 2016, we were transferred to the Department of State Service, Abuja. We stayed there for over two years.”

Reliving their ordeals in the DSS cell, he said: “They treated us badly. We were held in an underground cell. They gave us little bread in the morning, little rice in the afternoon and a morsel of semovita in the evening.

Each portion of food cannot satisfy a two-year old baby. They deprived us of everything. They didn’t even take us to court. There was no freedom to even see light. They subjected us to severe punishment. They kept us hungry and deprived us of medication. Suspects are being released massively because of the new DSS boss. I don’t know the actual number released so far. But we thank the new DSS boss.”
