Nigerians react as Remi Tinubu begs public for money ahead of 65th birthday

A video of Remi Tinubu, the wife of President Bola Tinubu appealing to the public for contributions toward the completion of the National Library project as part of her 65th birthday celebration has caused a stir on social media.

In the video that has become a growing sensation on social media, Mrs Tinubu is captured pleading with the general public to convert their goodwill gestures for her birthday into donations for the project.

According to the first lady, well wishers who choose to donate cakes, flowers, and newspaper adverts, should forgo all and give towards the project instead.

She added that she’d mark her birthday on Sunday, September 21, in quiet reflection and thanksgiving to God.

“I wish to appeal to those who would like to send a birthday card, cakes, flowers, greetings in the newspapers or gifts, should please send the funds to the designated account for a special project close to my heart, among many others, the completion of the National Library. This will be the best birthday present I could receive,” she said.

The appeal has sparked mixed reactions on social media.

One user wrote, “So you’re begging poor citizens to contribute for your foundation. With all due respect please put this video down because it doesn’t portray good of the country as the First Lady of this nation. Where are we even heading to… Who is your media manager?”

Another user asked, “What happened to taxpayers’ money for the project?”

A different commenter wrote, “So this is real. I actually thought it was AI.”

Another reaction read, “Una don see us finish for this country.”

Blogger Tunde Ednut also posted on Instagram, “Is this a joke??? I have never in my life heard of a First Lady of a nation indirectly telling poor citizens to donate money into a particular account for her personal project.”

Police fault reports linking First Lady’s convoy to death of girl in Ondo

Police have denied report that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, crushed a nine-year-old girl dead in Akure, the capital of Ondo State on Thursday.

The Police denied the claim in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, on Thursday.

According to the statement, the claim, published by an online reporters, was entirely baseless and misleading.

“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false and misleading report published by Sahara Reporters on April 17.

“It alleged that the convoy of the first lady, Sen. Oluremi, was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure,” the statement read.

“Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations conducted by the command confirm that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle.

” And not by any vehicle associated with the first lady’s convoy.”

According to Ayanlade, a witness ,who observed the hit-and-run incident pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle immediately after the crash, which occurred in the Oba-Ile area of Akure.

The witness accounts were corroborated by several individuals at the scene, as well as by the victim’s parents.

“Furthermore, Sahara Reporters inaccurately claimed the deceased girl was nine years old.

According to her parents, the child was actually seven years old, highlighting the publication’s disregard for factual accuracy, even in a matter as sensitive as this,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo state command, was said to have personally visited the grieving family and assured them of a full and transparent investigation into the incident.

“At no point was the first lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” the spokesperson reaffirmed.

The First lady was in Ondo State to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and to distribute 10,000 professional kits. comprising Crocs and scrubs, to midwives in the South-West zone.

Just In: Remi Tinubu breaks silence on Delta nursing students’ mocking chants during visit

First Lady Remi Tinubu has dismissed a viral video of Delta State nursing students allegedly mocking her during her visit to state.

TheNewsGuru reported that the students of the nursing school rejected a song introduced by the Master of Ceremony (MC), calling the wife of the President the mother of the nation.

Reacting, First Lady through her SSA Media, Busola Kukoyi, stated that educational institutions should encourage an environment where students are free to express themselves while maintaining decorum.

According to her, First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been drawn to a video circulating on social media, showing chants welcoming both the First Lady of Delta State and the First Lady of Nigeria during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 Professional Kits to Midwives in the South-South zone held at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, Delta State, on Tuesday, 25th March, 2025.

“The event was primarily to motivate midwives across the nation, with the aim of reducing infant and maternal mortality, and morbidity in Nigeria. Her Excellency deeply appreciates the warm reception by the Delta State Government, the people of Delta State, as well as enthusiasm shown by nurses, midwives, women groups, and student nurses present at the event.

“However, a section of the video, allegedly recorded by some students at the event, showed a spontaneous and playful twist to the welcome song. Sequel to that, it has come to our attention that some of the students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences have been issued a query regarding their participation in the chants. While the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline, it is important to recognize that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner.

“The Office of the First Lady believes that educational institutions should foster an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum. The First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals, and it is our hope that this event remains a positive and motivating experience for all involved.

“We trust that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences will handle this matter with understanding and fairness, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression.”

A follow-up letter signed by the Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne and written to Edobor on Friday reads: “The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, in his magnanimity, has directed the school authority to withdraw the query issued to you on the 27th March, 2025.

“You are therefore to return the query letter through the student affairs officer to the office of the provost. The school authority regrets any inconvenience this must have caused the state.”

“The audacious nursing school students who suitably rejected Bola Tinubu’s wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, in that ‘Na Your Mama Be This’ song ought to be celebrated, but as is characteristic of this Tinubu repressive era, one of them is being targeted for sharing this charming rendition on her TikTok page.

“We will be providing backing to this lady with all our physical and legal might to ensure the authorities at Delta State College of Nursing Sciences do not perpetrate this egregious act of injustice, as an injury to one is an injury to all,” he wrote.

  • Lagos Assembly reacts to alleged involvement of Remi Tinubu in speakership tussle

Lagos Assembly reacts to alleged involvement of Remi Tinubu in speakership tussle

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have denied an online report alleging that the ongoing speakership crisis is linked to the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Mr Stephen Ogundipe, made the clarification in a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday.

NAN reports that chaos erupted at the Assembly on Monday as lawmakers and staff clashed with DSS personnel upon their arrival.

The Assembly complex was shut for several hours before legislative staff forced open the chamber’s doors, resuming activities under tense circumstances.

In a statement issued later, the Assembly condemned the presence of armed DSS operatives, stating it undermined its sanctity and obstructed lawmakers from performing their duties.

Reacting to the allegation, Ogundipe said no member of the Assembly would accuse the First Lady of involvement in legislative affairs or attempt to tarnish her reputation.

He said; “We firmly state that the First Lady has no role in any internal disagreements within the House. Any attempt to link her to these issues is unfounded.

“The attention of the Lagos Assembly has been drawn to a misleading report circulating online. The report falsely claims that the First Lady is influencing internal House matters.

“We categorically dissociate all members of the Lagos State House of Assembly from this baseless allegation. The report is entirely fabricated and has no truth whatsoever.

“All members of the Assembly hold the First Lady in the highest regard. As a former First Lady of Lagos State and now the First Lady of Nigeria, she has made significant contributions to governance and national development.”

Ogundipe urged the press, as key stakeholders, to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying information before publication.

He emphasised that responsible journalism requires seeking the truth and ensuring reports are accurate and balanced.

  • ‘It Is false’ – First lady, Remi Tinubu denies leading national prayer against hardship

‘It Is false’ – First lady, Remi Tinubu denies leading national prayer against hardship

Nigerian First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu has dismissed reports of leading a national prayer to seek God’s intervention in the country’s economic hardship.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) understands that the Director General of the National Prayer Forum (NPF), Segun Balogun Afolorunikan had disclosed that Remi Tinubu and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, would lead a national prayer event.

The news attracted a widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians questioning the rationale behind such event.

Speaking, Remi Tinubu’s Senior Special Adviser on Media, Busola Kukoyi, in a statement on Saturday, said the First Lady is not organising a national prayer.

She further described the news making rounds on some social media platforms as unfounded and misleading.

The statement read: “This is to clarify and inform the general public that the First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON is not organizing a National Prayer.

“The news making rounds in some conventional and social media platforms are unfounded and misleading. Consequently, anyone who might have come across the purported news of the joint National Prayer for Nigeria should disregard it as false.

“Whilst the First Lady, a Christian and strong advocate of prayer and praying for Nigeria believes that prayer is an act that must be done willingly, conscientiously and correctly. She also believes that praying for Nigeria is the responsibility of every Nigerian, irrespective of religious belief, political affiliation, tribe or tongue.

“Members of the public are advised to verify the authenticity of any news or event involving the First Lady of Nigeria or her Office through Official channels.
    Kindly be advised accordingly.”

  • Remi Tinubu’s prayerton to save Nigeria – By Pius Mordi

Remi Tinubu’s prayerton to save Nigeria – By Pius Mordi

By the projections of the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, 313 individuals will recite the Qur’an, culminating in the recitation of the Holy text 2,191 times for national stability over seven days. On the Christian side, “prayer warriors” [whatever that means] will meet at the National Ecumenical Centre for a week of intense prayers. The warriors will come from various denominations in the spiritual exercise focusing their efforts on the nation’s adversities.

That is a massive outpouring of prayers through which “we believe that with God’s wisdom, our leaders and citizens will find the strength to confront our common enemies,” according to Chief Segun Balogun Afolorunikan, Director General of the National Prayer Forum (NPF). I thought the NPF acronym is supposed to be the exclusive of the Police just like their uniform. For daring to cross the red line without authorisation, Very Dark Man in his bid to create exciting content was said to have adorned himself in Police officer’s uniform without permission, is being prosecuted. Well, being that the wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the spearhead of the current prayer venture, the Police will maintain their lane. For the NPF, a special platform with a hilarious theme, “Seeking the Intervention of God in Nigeria’s Affairs”, has been coined. I am not sure the organisers are implying that God has not been involved in Nigeria’s affair until they came up with their latest prayer venture. But with the involvement of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, this prayerton is unprecedented and will be decisive.

It is not like Nigerians are being summoned to pray for the country for the first time. General Yakubu Gowon, former head of state who led the country through a fracticidal civil war, left his well deserved peaceful life in retirement to convene Nigeria Prays in 1996 to, according to him, “put an end to the various problems plaguing Nigeria.”

As desirable as prays are, even Gowon had to wade through some potential political landmines to engage in it. Late Sani Abacha was head of state then and he had to secure his buy-in before he and his group could pray.

“I did not want to go to jail because at that time the situation in the country was not palatable. You never know what you could do that would lead you to jail. And I did not want to experience the mosquitoes in Kirikiri. That was why I had to get the nod of General Abacha because he probably would not understand why we had to pray and could in fact have read meaning to our prayers.”

You see, prayers can be risky, even dangerous. Thankfully, there is no such concern for the NPF. All loopholes have been convered. Rather than have any fear, participants can consider the latest one bountiful and rewarding. The 313 people to recite the Holy Qur’an over seven days having a herculean task. They have to travel from their abode to the National Mosque in Abuja, get accommodated and fed over the period. For their prayer warrior counterparts, they have to be head hunted from various denominations first. The head hunters have to be impressed with their prayer prowess during auditioning, I guess.

Like every labourer, the NPF brigade would have earned their pay after seven days. They should be paid. If not, and I hope not, it will be an incomplete exercise. As Godswill Akpabio, our Senate President admonished fellow Nigerians, whenever you see free food, go and chop there. On Akpabio’s advise, I am his full agreement. Free food is hard to find. I would love to be part of prayer bonanza given how expensive food is to find. But it will not take rocket science for the head hunters to disqualify me if I apply to be one of prayer warriors.

My major handicap which I will be unable to disguise is that I do not believe in praying for leaders, not just Nigerian leaders. When I am in church and the presiding minister calls for prayers for leaders, I switch off or pray for us, the people, to strive to hold leaders accountable. Before a politician offers himself to ‘serve’ the people, I believe he already knows the challenges facing the country and the path to our redemption. Despite this fact, Nigerians vociferously pray for their leaders for God to guide them in doing what is right and just. But it is like the more leaders are prayed for, the worse they become.

By 1996 when Gowon founded his Nigeria Prays, he thought the people were living through excruciating times. But the minimum wage at the time actually took workers home. People went to their farms and travelled across without fear of their safety. There was a thriving middle class and the average Nigerian who could read bought newspapers of their choice. About 28 years later, the president’s wife and the country’s National Security Adviser are so concerned with the state of affairs that they are asking God to directly take over the Nigeria.

Since they consider the leadership incapable of getting the job done, they may have to tell God to create the tablet that will provide the guide on how to “confront our common enemies”. But first, the Moses that will go receive the tablets from God from wherever just as the biblical Moses did those days will have tobe so designated. Probably, they may ask God to name a new set of leaders to do God’s will. Whatever option they choose, the First Lady may not find it enobling. Will her husband,  the President, not be undermined? For the prayer warriors on both sides of the aisle, my advise is listen to Godswill Akpabio. Whenever they are done with the prayerton, their people will be waiting to get their own share of free food. They must bring food to their folks.
