Residents prevent troops from arresting a gun-runner in Plateau

Residents of Vom community in Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau, on Saturday prevented troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) from arresting a suspected gun runner and fabricator in the community.

Maj. Ishaku Takwa, the Media Officer of Operation Safe Haven, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Jos.
Takwa said that the residents who came out in their numbers to prevent the soldiers from accessing the community, threw stones and other dangerous objects on the troops.

“Troops of OPSH, acting on credible intelligence, mobilised its personnel in the early hours of Saturday to effect arrest of the suspected gun-runner and fabricator in Vom Community.

“Sadly, on sighting security personnel, members of the community came out en mass and barricaded the road leading to the community.

“They prevented the troops from gaining access to the community to carry out their lawful duty.

“All efforts to calm the crowd proved futile as they resorted to throwing stones and other dangerous objects at security personnel who kept their cool in the face of unwarranted provocation,” he said.

The media officer explained that to prevent the situation from degenerating, the OPSH Commander, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, ordered the immediate withdrawal of the troops from the community.

“While we condemn the action of some members of the community who obstructed our troops from performing a lawful duty, we wish to remind the people about the consequences of preventing the arrest and harbouring criminal elements in their community.

“No one should be in doubt that troops would certainly effect the arrest of any person or persons suspected to be involved in any unwholesome activity considered capable of truncating the peace and security of the state and the nation at large,” he said.

Takwa warned residents of the state against obstructing security agencies from performing their lawful duties.

  • Russia residents with more than $10,000 barred from leaving country

Russia residents with more than $10,000 barred from leaving country

Russian residents are no longer allowed to leave the country with more than the equivalent of 10,000 dollars as the Kremlin tries to keep capital inside the country.

The country faced sharp sanctions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The rule affects the movement of foreign currency too.

It seems designed to make sure that people attempting to leave Russia as sanctions were slapped on the country don’t take all their hard currency with them.

Long queues are now common at cash machines that still have banknotes as people try to withdraw their holdings.

This is against the backdrop of a rouble that is rapidly losing most of its value in light of the sanctions.

Prices of imported goods are shooting up and people are trying to purchase some items, like new phones before they become unaffordable.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the rule limiting cash movements was a reaction to “unfriendly” steps taken by the U.S. and other Western countries.

The unfriendly steps included sanctions that had been slapped on multiple Russian banks.

  • Why ‘side-chicks’ remain in business – Benin residents

Why ‘side-chicks’ remain in business – Benin residents

Some residents in Benin, the Edo capital, have said that some men would continue to keep mistresses, popularly called ‘side chicks’, due to their perceived benefits and strong grip.

The respondents’ submissions arise from the growing reports of infedility in the lives of men, especially the highly placed and celebrities in society.

Some men who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Benin claim that wives might never be able to compete with the side-chicks in terms of allure, attention to details and penchant for romance.

Mr Ojefia King, a businessman, revealed that most men had side-chicks for the fun of it.

According to him, side-chicks, most times do not have to expect anything except trips and sex from a man, whether married or single.

“Some side-chicks go after men because they are wealthy, while some others do it to meet their needs,” he said.

Also, Mr Larry Sideso, a Disc Jockey (DJ), said that men are attracted to the side-chicks because they had less stress and were always obedient and understanding of their needs and desires.

“I am married and I have a side-chick; she knows her place, no crossing of boundaries.

“My wife is aware of my side-chick.

“Like I said earlier, everybody knows their place. I don’t carry different ladies. I just have my wife and a side-chick.

“I love my wife so much. I won’t trade her for anything else, but my side-chick is only assisting,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Ivie Idolor, a teacher, said that side-chicks were always answering the call of nature for men.

“If you study the creation of men critically, you will notice men have longer reproductive period than women.

“A man can still impregnate a woman even at 75 years of age, but a woman can’t give birth at such age.

“Thus, the sperms in a man can produce many children, which simply means when God said dominate and replenish the earth specifically means men’s duty to reproduce double.

“Men cannot help it, that’s what hormones have programmed them to do. So, when a guy has had enough of his main chick, he moves on and forgets about loving his main chick again,” she said.

On his part, Mr Richard Amekpa, a fashion designer, said men had side-chicks to get sexual satisfaction.

“Love, care, romance and sex are very important in a relationship or marriage.

“If a wife cannot satisfy the husband with that, he will definitely have someone else that will take her role.

“Total attention is very key to see the real beauty of a relationship.

“If a wife refuses to give the husband full attention, she is definitely opening the door for a side-chick,” he said.

However, Mr Isreal Osamuyi, a clergy, advised men to upgrade their wives to the standard they admire in other women.

Osamuyi said that most women hardly took care of themselves because they had one need or the other to take care of.

“Women that are married and have children always have one thousand and one responsibilies to attend to.

“So, there is little or no time at all to buy clothes, makeup and visit drinking bars or roam around with friends.

“I am not in support of men having side-chicks; but if I really want to peep into their world by trying to understand why, I think it’s purely because of insecurity,” he said.

  • COVID-19: Why fully vaccinated residents may have to take more than two doses – Lagos Government

COVID-19: Why fully vaccinated residents may have to take more than two doses – Lagos Government

The Lagos State Government has said that fully vaccinated residents may have to take extra doses of the COVID-19 doses as a safety precaution against the changing virus.

This is was revealed by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi.

He made the remark on Tuesday during a briefing in Ikeja, the state capital.

“So we know that the vaccine is certainly protecting the population from severe disease and death. So the question is, as the virus is changing, it may require that we need to give you more than two doses,” the commissioner said.

“You may require a booster which is the first, second and subsequent doses because we have also discovered that even though the vaccine stops you from getting seriously sick, it may not necessarily stop you from catching Covid.

“We do know that some people even who are fully vaccinated with two doses will still catch Covid and some people will get quite sick and occasionally, some people may die. But certainly, the people that are dying who are not vaccinated are much higher than the people who are dying who have been vaccinated.

Professor Abayomi explained that the state government plans to vaccinate 30 percent of Lagos residents by the end of the year.

According to him, scientists around the world are toying with the idea that a third or fourth dose may be required.

Meanwhile, the members of the Diplomatic Community in Lagos have scored the state government high on its COVID-19 response and management effort which have seen the nation’s commercial capital overcome three successive waves of the global pandemic.

Speaking during a visit to Professor Abayomi, members of the Diplomatic communities agreed that the Lagos State Government has done a lot to mitigate the scourge of the infection while pledging to continue to offer support to the COVID19Lagos response directly and indirectly.

In her remarks, the Consul General of France in Nigeria, Laurence Monmayrant said she is impressed by the biosecurity facilities that were put in place at IDH by the State Government to prosecute the war against the global pandemic.

“I’m really impressed by what I have seen today, I enjoyed the visit because this is really something we’ve been looking at since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve seen that Lagos State has done a lot,” she said.

“But it is one thing to read and see it in the media report and it is another thing to come and see on the spot what is happening here, so it was a very interesting day here today.

She harped on the need to ensure that more citizens are vaccinated as a way to mitigate the new wave of the pandemic.

They have also urged the Federal Government to provide adequate equipment for security personnel fighting the war against banditry and other crimes in the state.

This is coming amidst series of attacks and abductions for ransoms with the most recent being the abduction of 73 students of the Government Day Secondary School in Kaya in Maradun Local Government Area.

According to reports, the assailants had invaded the school on September 1 in a large number and left with the students to an undisclosed location.

The incident was the third attack on schools in Zamfara this year – coming after that of Jangebe and Bakura.

A total of 317 students were abducted from the Government Girls Science Secondary School in Jangebe during an attack in February, six months before bandits kidnapped at least 20 persons comprising students and officials from the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura.

Since the recent incidents, the government has had to take more stringent measures such as the shutting down of telecoms services.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on September 3 directed telecommunications providers in the state to shut down their services.

“The pervading security situation in Zamfara has necessitated an immediate shutdown of all telecommunications services in the state from today, September 3, 2021. This is to enable relevant security agencies to carry out the required activities towards addressing the security challenge in the state,” a memo signed by the vice-chairman of the NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta, said.

Boko Haram terrorists have captured over 500 communities in eight wards of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

This is according to the chairman of the council, Hon Suleiman Chukuba, who briefed journalists in the state on Friday.

He listed the affected areas as Manta, Gurmana, Bassa-Kokki, Allawa, Kurebe, Kushaka, Kwati, Chukuba and Galadima Kogo.

According to him, the insurgents have attempted to incorporate and recruit residents of the communities to become Boko Haram members.

Chukuba, who lamented the situation, also said the terrorists are trying to equip the people to fight against the government.

“They incorporate the people of those communities by telling them they have arms and money to give them so they can assist them in fighting the government,” he added.

He said that Boko Haram insurgents have proclaimed that they do not want conventional primary and secondary schools, adding that their preference is the Islamic school.

“Shiroro Local Government has an uncountable number of Boko Haram [fighters],” the council boss explained.

“I have the proof being that I am the Executive Chairman, the Chief Security Officer of the local government. When they go to the various communities, what they tell them is that ‘We don’t want primary, secondary schools. We only want Islamiyya schools.’”

The council leader, who is worried over Boko Haram’s incursion, is appealing to the Federal Government to bring more security personnel to the area to help dislodge the criminals who have made Shiroro their home.

The recent development is coming six months after the state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello raised an alarm that Boko Haram terrorists have hoisted their flag in Kaure village, Shiroro Local Government Area.

The governor had said the insurgents forcibly took the wives of some of the villagers for themselves.
