Buhari’s mandate to shift dependence from oil yielding results – Kachikwu

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, on Tuesday in Abuja said the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to shift focus from oil-dependence to gas was yielding results.

Kachikwu said this while addressing newsmen after the signing of the Gas Sales and Aggregation Agreement (GSAA) by the NNPC/Total Exploration Production Nigeria Joint Venture, Greenville Oil and Gas Company and the Gas Auto.

According to Kachikwu, the agreement will unlock unbelievable opportunities as the first phase will produce 2200 standard cubic feet, scf, of gas to 5,000 scf.

President Muhammadu Buhari provided this leadership under the seven big wins. Conversations have been on over the last two-three years.

Our first step was to set up the Nigerian Gas Management Company and Nigerian Gas Pipeline Transportation Company.

I am happy that a few months after we launched the gas policy, we are seeing this happening. We want to ensure that the payment issues are dealt with and made on time so there is a good financing for the project,” he said.

He urged other investors to invest in the sector, saying ”we will see what we can do to move this fairly fast from oil-focused to gas-focused zone”.

Admitting that most industries in the North were dying due to the power challenge, he urged the investors to move quickly to help solve the problem.

The Gas Sales Aggregation Agreement will bring an investment of 500 million dollars in the first phase and 350 million dollars in the second phase.

It will also lead to many Compressed Natural Gas companies selling directly to consumers across the country.

  • WAEC withholds 15,000 results of SSCE candidates

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of over 15,000 candidates that sat for the May/June senior school certificate examinations.

The affected candidates are from Niger State.

The decision to hold on to the results was reportedly because the state government failed to pay the examination fees on behalf of the candidates.

Non-indigenes that sat for the examination paid their registration fees of about N14,000 each to the Ministry of Education following the state government’s decision to pay for only the indigenes.

However, the payments made by the non-indigenes were not remitted to WAEC, according to Thisday.

It was gathered that over N750 million was owed WAEC by both indigene and non-indigene candidates that sat for the examination.

The situation is a repeat of last year’s stalemate.

In 2016, WAEC and National Examinations Council (NECO), withheld results of candidates from Niger State.

The councils had explained that they took the action because the state government failed to remit fees to the examination body.

The APC had earlier won both the chairmanship and councillorship elections in Ward A6, Polling Unit 033 located in Ogunmodede College, Papa Epe, where the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode voted.

At the end of counting of the votes cast, the results showed that the APC polled a total of 299 votes for the chairmanship election as against one polled by the Labour Party and zero vote polled respectively by the Peoples’ Democratic Party and Accord Party.

For the councillorship election in the unit, the APC polled a total of 293 votes as against one polled by Labour Party and zero polled by PDP. In the second polling unit in the ward, APC polled 298 votes for the chairmanship election as against zero vote polled by the PDP and Labour Party.

Ambode, on Saturday said local government elections would engender participatory governance and revive belief in the electoral process at the third tier of government.

Ambode noted that the election in Lagos State came six years after the last one was conducted.

“I am happy that this election is coming at my own time. The whole idea is for us to evolve a process where the citizens come out and believe in a process that is credible. When the people see credible election at the local government level, they will be excited to participate because they know that it is credible, peaceful and without violence. That is what we have been preaching. Lagos is too cosmopolitan for us not to have a credible election.

“We need to enhance democracy in the country and we can only do it by what we are doing today.”

He said adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure that voters cast their votes in a peaceful atmosphere and forestall any breakdown of law and order.

“So far, so good, from the reports I have received from all the other parts of Lagos State, we are pleased with what is going on. I believe strongly that it will be peaceful throughout,” Ambode added.
