Just In: JAMB releases 2022 UTME results

JAMB has released results of the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Dr Fabian Benjamin, Head, Public Affairs and Protocol in JAMB advised candidates to send UTMERESULT in one word to 55019 to have their results checked.

He stated that JAMB had not uploaded the results to its website for obvious reasons; hence candidates could check their results using the SMS code.

“To check the 2022 UTME result, all a candidate needs to do is to simply send UTMERESULT to 55019 using the same phone number that he or she used for registration.

“The result will be sent as a response to the candidate’s text message. This is the only process of checking the 2022 UTME results for now as the board has not uploaded it on its website for obvious reasons.

“In addition, candidates are forewarned that they would, as usual, receive all kinds of messages from desperate fraudsters on how to check their results different from the aforementioned one.

“Hence, JAMB urges all candidates to ignore all such messages on how to check their 2022 UTME results as they are all products of deceit aimed at misleading them,’’’ he stated.

Benjamin stressed that JAMB adopted the user-friendly and simplified process of checking UTME results through the use of SMS to adhere to the ease of doing business protocol of the government.

He added that the process was simplified to preclude the unconscionable exploitation of candidates by shylock business centres and cyber cafes which often took advantage of hapless candidates.

The 2022 UTME began on May 6 and ended on May 16.

2022 UTME: JAMB announces results out soon

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said about 1.4 million candidates have so far sat for its 2022 exercise across the country and their results would soon be released.

The board revealed this in its Weekly Bulletin of the Office of the Registrar on Tuesday, in Abuja.

JAMB said the results for its ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) were undergoing a form of scrutiny before being released to candidates.

”About 1.4 million candidates have so far taken the examination across the country with some examination towns and centres completing their own allotted number of candidates for the year.

”The results of sessions already taken will be released soon.

”However, the release of these results is with the caveat that after previewing the CCTV footage of the conduct of the examination, the result of any candidate found wanting would be withdrawn if already released.

“If not yet released, such result would be withheld.”

Over 1. 7 million candidates registered for the 2022 exercise and were expected to sit for the ongoing exercise across the country.

JAMB also said that it had no significant concerns as the exercise progressed, adding that the reports coming in from the states established the veracity of the reports earlier received from its centre teams.

It, however, reiterated its zero tolerance for examination infractions and urged candidates to conduct themselves properly, while following its rules.

Similarly, the board warned Computer Based Tests (CBT) centre owners not to engage in any form of infraction against its operational code that might negatively impact the exercise.

JAMB said: “The board is not here to subordinate the interest of Nigeria to any other interests. JAMB would, therefore, not tolerate any infraction, no matter how small.

”If the tempo of JAMB activities is too high for any centre, they are to, at liberty, seek other areas of engagement as there are so many things people can do outside partnering with JAMB.”

It further urged centre owners to ensure full compliance with extant rules and regulations in their dealings with the board as there would be no hiding place for any wrongdoer.

The 2022 exercise commenced on May 6 and is scheduled to end on May 16.

  • DSO: Reformatting the Kano model for better results, By Okoh Aihe

DSO: Reformatting the Kano model for better results, By Okoh Aihe

    By Okoh Aihe

The Digital Switchover (DSO) went to Kano State early in the month with some reloaded swagger and a little twist in the tale which at once looked very positive and promising. The November 2, 2021, Kano launch survived an interim executive before being executed in style by a broadcast boss who is trying to execute his game plan in a distinguished manner. It is to his credit that he has faithfully subscribed to the ageless maxim that “government is a continuum.”

The DSO which is one of the cardinal projects of this administration is a legacy project that couldn’t be executed in the lifespan of one government. So having inherited it from the Jonathan government, the Buhari government made it a major project and promised to execute it with prompt and panache. The administration was probably attracted by the capacity of the transition technology to affect the entire human ecosystem; yes, anybody would be enchanted by its capacity to stimulate job opportunities, unleash growth in the creative sector, and present new TV viewing opportunities to a segment of the society that was condemned to antiquated TV programming in the worst experience of analogue presentation. The economy would be a major beneficiary in a sustained period of blighted recession.

The DSO wears too many colours which, from whatever angle, is tantalizing. The content makers love the creative opportunities and economic empowerment. TV viewers see it as an alternative reality that could seduce their minds away from bad governance and deposit them at the tipping point of nirvana. Ah! The government loves the political appeal, of a promise fulfilled; at least what the others couldn’t do, they have achieved with flowing majesty.

However, the journey lost swiftness, got mired in superfluous controversies and, in fact, really just suffered from suffocating disputations, intrinsically, from very irritating bureaucracy that has attracted some troubling and interesting attention from relevant quarters. At a point the DSO story was a nightmare thus making final execution a remote possibility.

I had earlier written to commend the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approving some money, N9.4bn on February 10, 2021, for payment of legacy debts owed some organisations involved in the DSO value chain. Unfortunately the money did not come with any magic wand!

But this is no time to cry over a world that is gone, but a time to look at a future of promise and possibility, which is the reason Kano has crept into the centre of discourse. On this page we lay no claim to the things that happened there but it will be remiss not to recall how severally we had called for the various stakeholders and governments at all levels to buy into the transition process so as to serve the DSO hot to the people as a prime dividend of democracy.

In Kano the narrative changed. The NBC achieved that amorphous target we had set for it and, in fact, surpassed all expectations. The launch took place inside the State House Auditorium. The governor and the Emir of Kano, among the Kano State crème de la crème, were in attendance.

You can glean this excitement from the presentation of Malam Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). “Permit me to put on record the overwhelming support we have received from the Executive Governor of Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduge. His Excellency’s commitment to the success of this rollout, remains most admirable and contagious. He did not only grant us audience at a very short notice, but he has gone ahead to own the process and so, for the past couple of weeks, Kano state has been preparing for this new change that is to come. The state house auditorium was expressly approved to host the phenomenal event and all the Local Government Areas were sensitized in preparation for this. A couple of months ago, about a hundred information officers were also trained, and equipped with basic information to assist in handling Frequently Asked Questions. If we have the buy-in of the Governors of other States like we have had in Kano, then, the DSO project will be completed in record time,” he said.

Kano State also presents some interesting stats. According to an NBC baseline study in 2017, the State had about 12,882,030 projected Population, 2,147,005 Households and 1.6 Million projected Number of Television Viewing homes. The figure would have gone up obviously thus pitching the State capital as the biggest economic hub outside of Lagos.

Let’s try to untangle the activities that took place in Kano prelaunch. Trainings were done. Information officers or some kind of ambassadors were recruited to run with DSO message, and about one hundred installers were trained, thus actually demonstrating the job creating potentials of the DSO. But that is only at the superficial level!

For me, something bigger happened, and that is the clincher. In a most welcome development, the NBC boss sensitised the gathering to an address that would be delivered by the DigiTeam leader, Engr. Eddy Amana who he described as well-resourced and the custodian of the historic landmarks of Digitisation. I will want to observe that what impaired the progress in the DSO transition for a long time was the attitude of some people in this government to institute a supposedly elite team that had little knowledge of DSO but were actually more interested in spending the budget. Some kind of shadow cabinet in the warped sense of it.

But let me confess to the truth. I am not so excited to believe that the demons embedded in the DSO transition process have been laid to rest immediately. Instead they will grow more crafty and sophisticated waiting to make their next move.

This is why I want to make this suggestion; that the Kano template which took a long time to format should be fine-tuned in preparation for use in the remaining States. Unfortunately the journey is only starting, leaving the NBC with loads of work to do if the country is ever to achieve the DSO target and join the rest of the world in modern broadcasting.

The job ahead is huge and the threat of failure should not be underestimated. The NBC needs help and so is the new head that is trying to cut his teeth. This is no time for political party definitions and predilections. Those who love this nation, including tech experts, should sink their differences and bury their little hatchets to help resolve the DSO puzzle. Time is of the essence and the NBC will literally need some hydrogen boosters to deliver on the DSO process.

    NECO releases 2021 examination results

The National Examination Council (NECO) on Friday announced the release of the results of the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) conducted nationwide in July.

NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dantali Wushishi, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Minna.

He said that out of 1,233,631 candidates who registered; 1,226,631 actually sat for the examination.

Wushishi explained that 945,853 candidates obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, while 1,094,291candidates also obtained five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.

He said that number of candidates who made five credits and above including English and Mathematics was 878,925 representing 71.64 per cent, when compared with 2020 SSCE internal figures of 894,101,which was 73.89 per cent, with 2.2 per cent decrease.

He further explained that number of candidates who made five credits and above irrespective of English language and Mathematics was 1,226,796, representing 94.04 per cent, when compared with 2020 SSCE internal figures of 1,112,041 of 91.9 per cent.

Wushishi said that candidates involved in various forms of malpractices in 2021 was 20,003, representing 1.63 per cent, whereas 33,470 representing 2.63 per cent cases were recorded in 2020.

The registrar who reiterated the council’s zero tolerance for examination malpractices said appropriate standards and excellence were maintained right from the planning stage to the release of the results.

He said the reduction in the level of malpractices was as a result of deepened monitoring of the examination by members of the governing board, management and senior staff of the council.

He said that candidates could now access their results on NECO website,www.neco.gov.ng.

[BREAKING] 2023: Senate bows to pressure, allows INEC determine mode of transmission of election results

    Emman Ovuakporie

The Senate on Tuesday rescinded its earlier decision on Section 52 of the Electoral Act as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can now determine mode of transmitting election in Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports the upper legislative chamber withdrew its earlier decision that INEC cannot transmit election results electronically.

With this rescission by Senate, the Apex electoral body can now determine the mode of transmission.

2023: Utomi proposes merger of three major political parties; Jega backs electronic transmission of results

A political economist, Professor Pat Utomi has proposed the merger of three political parties aside from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as parts of efforts to unveil a fresh political dawn in 2023.

He made the proposal on Friday during a national political summit in Abuja, ahead of the general elections in 2023.

He said, “To project these desires, the comity of NCFront for Political Parties is proposing the merger of three of the leading political parties outside of the PDP and the APC to merge with a plan to absorb other parties and righteous wings of the APC and the PDP.”

Meanwhile, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has called for the electronic transmission of election results in the country.

“Transmission of election results has been one of the key areas in which reckless, unpatriotic, and self-serving politicians have undermined the integrity of the Nigerian electoral process,” Jega said.

“Bringing remarkable integrity to the Nigerian electoral process, therefore, would no doubt require the jettisoning of the traditional obtuse manual transmission of results, and its replacement with using appropriate technology with electronic transmission of results.”

Professor Jega also expressed worries over citizens’ lack of trust in the electoral process and the poor performances by those elected through the process.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, on his part blamed the failure of the electoral system on Nigerians who ‘enthrone tyranny during elections for peanuts’.

“Are we practicing democracy? No. We are practicing election-ocracy, that is my new term for it. What do I mean by election-ocracy? Every four years, Nigerians go out to the poll to carry out a ritual of electing their leaders,” he explained.

“They never actually elect them anyway because their leaders select themselves, they are state captors. They have captured the state.”

  • 2023: Allow electronic transmission of election results, Jonathan tells National Assembly

2023: Allow electronic transmission of election results, Jonathan tells National Assembly

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has called on the National Assembly to allow the use of electronic means of transmitting results of future elections in the country.

Mr Jonathan made the call on Wednesday while delivering a lecture at the inauguration Ceremony/lecture of the National Defence College (NDC), Course 30, in Abuja.

The former president, who was the Special Guest of Honour and Guest Speaker at the occasion, spoke as the Harmonisation Committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives prepares to meet to resolve the differences in the bill passed in July.

A major and controversial provision in the bill is Section 52, which deals with electronic transmission of results of elections.

During the consideration and passage, the Senate changed this Section from; “The Commission may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable” to “The commission may consider electronic transmission provided the national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by the Nigerian Communications Commission and approved by the National Assembly.”

But the House, however, retained the former.

Mr Jonathan, who lost the 2015 presidential election to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, and quickly conceded, urged the lawmakers to allow electronic transmission elections result for transparency and to avoid crisis.

He also urged Nigerians to have confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to avoid an electoral crisis each time there was a general election.

“Where there is no confidence in the electoral umpire, people resort to crisis. But unfortunately, sometimes when the result comes out, the damage would have been done.

“I urge the National Assembly (NASS), while looking at the law, they should allow the use of electronic means of transmitting results for the sake of transparency as well as avoiding electoral crisis,” he said.

Mr Jonathan also called on Nigerians, civil society groups, among others, to join hands in securing the country against the activities of insurgency and banditry.

The former president noted that security is the business of every Nigerian, whether in media, civil society, traditional rulers, religious leaders and politicians.

He said security should not be left in the hands of the governments alone.

Mr Jonathan added that “security was not just about defending the borders, but that the people needed to join hands too in securing lives and properties of the citizens, especially in areas of access to food, water, and education, among others.”

“It is very obvious that these days people don’t go to farms anymore because of one fear or the other. Everybody should be involved in securing the country. Yes, the government will do its part but we as individuals should also do our own part.

“My humble suggestion is that the government and stakeholders should do a lot of dialogue. When you start talking sometimes it reduces the anger in people. We must build this issue of human security and the security of the country,” he said.

The former president, however, stressed the need for Nigerians to come together to develop “a certain culture that would make the country grow and develop better.”

This, he said, would go a long way in reducing tension, crisis and other social vices among Nigerians, especially the youth.

Mr Jonathan urged the participants to avail themselves of the knowledge acquired during the course of the training into carrying out their lawful and professional duties.
