  • Ekiti Assembly rejects election results, adjourns sitting till October

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Tuesday condemned and rejected the result of last Saturday governorship election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Recall Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was defeated incumbent Deputy Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) as declared by INEC on Sunday.

The assembly also adjourned sitting till October 8, 2018, due to alleged harassment of members by security agents.

The adjournment followed a motion moved by the Leader of Business, Akinyele Olatunji.

Speaking at the House plenary in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, Olatunji described the process leading to the election and final results as unfortunate.

He condemned the harassment of Governor Ayodele Fayose, Peoples Democratic Party leaders across the state and members of the state assembly by security men.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Samuel Omotoso, said the election did not meet all democratic credentials.

He pointed out that the election was marred by outright brigandage, vote buying and falsification of results.

The Deputy Whip, Ekundayo Akinleye, remarked that the outcome of the election had shown that Nigerians should not expect free and fair elections in 2019.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, described the election as a show of shame with thugs and security men openly working for the opposition All Progressives Congress.

Oluwawole alleged that figures were brazenly doubled to favour the declared winner and expressed confidence that the stolen mandate would soon be retrieved.

The lawmakers called on the security agencies to leave Ekiti State to allow government business to thrive unhindered.

The PDP has majority of the lawmakers in the state assembly.

  • Ekiti Election: PDP candidate, Eleka rejects results

Ekiti Election: PDP candidate, Eleka rejects results

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, Olusola Eleka, has rejected the verdict by the Independent National Electoral Commission which declared the All Progressives Congress candidate, Kayode Fayemi, as winner.

In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, Mr Eleka said there was intimidation, inducement and oppression by security agents, who he said aided APC’s manipulation of the electoral process to ensure victory for Mr Fayemi.

Mr Fayemi polled a total of 197,459 to defeat Mr Eleka, who recorded 178,121. He also won in 12 of the total 16 local governments in the state.

“You are all aware of the unfortunate and dangerous events of the past 24 hours, in which our governorship election was hijacked by political desperadoes leveraging on ‘federal might’ to pervert the electoral process, subvert the will of Ekiti people, and viciously steal the mandate willingly and freely given to me on a massive scale by our people,” said Mr Eleka.

“PDP and I won the election overwhelmingly, receiving more than 70% of lawful votes cast and winning in almost all of the state’s 16 local government areas.

“I therefore reject the falsified results being bandied by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which purportedly gave the election to the All Progressives Congress and its Candidate; Dr. John Kayode Fayemi.”

He also described the outcome of the election as the “most audacious electoral robbery of our recent history,” saying the election would not stand.

“This brutal and barbaric process, which started well before the election, did not spare Governor Ayo Fayose and me; as the whole world had seen and had condemned. It is quite unfortunate that the harassment has continued even after the election,” he further said.

“On Saturday, July 14, the security agencies and INEC upped the ante, threw all caution to the wind, went back on their promises to be impartial and to conduct credible elections; they sided with APC and Fayemi to the chagrin of our party, myself, and the good people of Ekiti State.

“Despite the alarm we had earlier raised, the security agencies not only supported but also supervised the indiscriminate arrest of our party leaders and agents, the harassment and brutaliz3ation of voters on a massive scale, especially in Ado-Ekiti, Ikere and the suburbs, giving cover, tacit as well as active support to thugs imported into Ekiti by APC to snatch ballot boxes, create confusion, cause mayhem, and drive away voters in PDP strongholds, giving cover to APC agents as they financially and openly induced voters and bought votes at polling stations; and driving away our polling agents from collation centres and illegal seizure of documents and materials in their possession, among many other infractions.

“INEC on its own part reneged on its promise to have results counted, declared, and pasted on the wall of each polling station. There was nowhere INEC transmitted results from the polling centres as earlier promised. Ballot boxes were illegally moved to INEC offices while our agents were disallowed from following the process.

“INEC also allowed late voting by APC in hideouts when it was obvious the figures still would not add up after all the infractions mentioned above. Still, when all of these shenanigans still failed to give them the figures they needed, they stopped the announcement of results ward-by-ward, caused a deliberate power outage at the collation centre, with no alternative source of power provided for a long time, and then wrote results in favour of APC and its candidate.

“Without doubt, what has played out in Ekiti is the APC template for the 2019 General Election, where they have mapped out Rivers and Akwa Ibom as States they must capture at all costs, like they are now trying to do in Ekiti.

“It is now left for the opposition and opposition figures, most especially presidential hopefuls in 2019, to stand up to be counted in the struggle to roll back President Muhammadu Buhari’s creeping fascism, or throw in the towel without a fight.

“This is not just a sad day for Ekiti but also for democracy in Nigeria. Nothing demonstrates this better than the gloom that has enveloped our dear state since they announced their convoluted result. Ekiti mourns! But I ask our people not to be despondent but to keep hope alive, quoting the inimitable Chief MKO Abiola. This is another battle we will fight and win.

“In doing this, however, I appeal to all Ekiti sons and daughters to eschew violence. They will try and provoke you but the good Lord will help you to keep calm. Taking a cue from our great leader and democrat par excellence, ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, I wish to reiterate that my ambition is not worth the blood of a single Ekiti son or daughter. We are not cultists and bloody hounds like them and shall therefore not allow them turn Ekiti into a killing field like they have done in the Middle Belt.

“It remains for me to thank Ekiti for standing by me and our great party. Our royal fathers and the Oloris, teachers, civil servants, Okada riders, Labour leaders, market women, artisans, and students – I appreciate your unflinching support. We thank every Nigerian desirous to see the growth and defence of our renascent democracy.

“We thank the international community for their efforts and trust they will not let our people down in this their most trying moment. Those bent on setting this country on fire for selfish reasons must be restrained and turned back by the international community, mindful of the recent experience of Rwanda, Kosovo, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, Cote D’Ivoire, to mention but a few.”

The governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose, had on Saturday, shortly before the release of the results alleged that the election was rigged and that the people should expect results not reflecting the true picture of what transpire at the polls.

The governor however said the people of Ekiti should remain calm and not engage in violence as the ambition of Mr Olusola was not worth the blood of any citizen of the state.

He said his party agents were driven out of the collation centres to pave the way for the manipulation of results.

“In all this, the ambition of Prof. Kolapo Olusola is not worth the blood of any Ekiti son,” he said.

“We will seek redress as appropriate, but I want to appeal to you, don’t take laws into your hands. It is a matter of time; today we know, tomorrow, we don’t.

“They will announce results different from what you did and the votes you gave to Prof, Kolapo Olusola. Our candidate won the election, but the agents were driven out, after series of intimidation, harassment, shooting and thugs took over the whole political environment. It is sad and unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Abdulganiyu Raji, in his reaction to the election results, said INEC had kept his promise to be fair and transparent in the election.

He said the process was peaceful, lauding the people of Ekiti State for showing such decorum and restraint during the exercise.

  • ‘Melaye’s recall suffers setback…result sheets hijacked’

The recall verification exercise of the senator representing Kogi West, Mr Dino Melaye has suffered a setback in Mopamuro Local Government Area of the state as the exercise recorded a very low turnout of petitioners.

NAN Correspondent who monitored the verification exercise reports that between 70- 80 per cent of the petitioners in all the 10 wards in the council failed to come out to verify their signatures.

The exercise which lasted for six hours from 8am to 2pm, was very peaceful, free, fair and credible as the scanty petitioners were seeing verifying their signature with low turnout.

In Ward 01 (Units: 001; 002; 003) , Ward 03 (Units: 01; 02; and some other units in other wards, only 20 to 25 per cent of the petitioners were recorded as counted by the poll officers.

However, one polling unit each in Ward 06 and 07, Orokere and Takete-Ide respectively recorded 40 and 45 per cent turnout while only one polling unit recorded 90 per cent turnout (103 out of 110 petitioners.

Many voters expressed their displeasure over the appearance of their names on the recall register, saying they were shocked because they never at anytime signed any document for Melaye’s recall.

One of the voters at Ward 06, unit 04, Mrs Funmilayo Ojo, said that she was surprised to see her name among the petitioners, saying “it shall not be well with the perpetrators of such act”.

However, some hoodlums attacked INEC office in Mopamuro Local Government, disrupting the collation of results, shooting in the air, damaging vehicles and escaping with results sheets, while the INEC staff fled for safety.

One of the INEC staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the hoodlums were political thugs who accompanied an aide of Gov. Yahaya Bello to the INEC office to challenge the outcome of the verification exercise as it did not favour them.

  • MAPOLY students lock down school over delay in release of results

MAPOLY students lock down school over delay in release of results

Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, stormed the institution Monday morning and shut the main gate leading to the school, denying academic and non-academic staff access into the compound.

It was gathered that the final year students at the Higher National Diploma level formed the bulk of those responsible for the locking of the school gate.

Sources among them said they were protesting the non-release of their final year results by the academic staff.

The students had concluded their final examination in January 2018, and had hoped to be mobilised for the one-year National Youth Service Corps programme in April 2018.

They argued that with the delay in the release of their results, it is uncertain that they will be able to meet up with the April batch.

  • WAEC releases 2018 WASSCE results, withholds 1,021

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Tuesday announced the release of its January/February series of the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The council’s Head of National Office, Mr. Olu Adenipekun who announced the release in Lagos, said results of 1,021 candidates were, however, withheld.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the approval to introduce and conduct the additional diet in the country and other national offices of the five-member countries was given at the council’s 65th annual general meeting in March 2017.

The introduction of the series for Private candidates, brings to the three, the number of examinations conducted by the council each year.

According to Adenipekun, the results were withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice by the affected candidates.

He said the cases were being investigated and that reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course, for consideration.

“The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates,’’ Adenipekun said.

According to him, 11,721 candidates registered for the examination, while 11,307 actually sat for the test.

Giving a breakdown of statistics of candidates’ performance at the examination, the HNO said that 8,113 candidates obtained credits and above in two subjects.

He noted that 6,375 others obtained credits and above in three subjects, while 4,762 candidates obtained credits and above in four subjects.

Adenipekun also said that 3,263 candidates obtained credits and above in five subjects, while 2,010 others obtained credits and above in six subjects.

“A total 1,937 candidates, representing 17.13 per cent, obtained the minimum of credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

“The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE in 2017 was 26.01 per cent.

“From the statistics of performance, it is safe to say that candidates performance is not satisfactory, compared to what obtained in the same diet for private candidates in 2016 and 2017.

“We, therefore, wish to plead with candidates to take this examination seriously,’’ he said.

  • OBJ@81: My parents didn’t wait to see the results of their sacrifices – Obasanjo

OBJ@81: My parents didn’t wait to see the results of their sacrifices – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, disclosed that his major regret in life is that his parents left too early in life without reaping from the fruits of their sacrifices in his life.

The two-time Nigerian leader who is marking his 81st birthday, said the early death of his parents and their failure to enjoy the fruits of the sacrifice they made while raising him continues to make him sad.

He made the disclosure at a ceremony to mark his birthday at Marque Events Centre located within the premises of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

Obasanjo said he wished his parents lived long to witness his success in life.

“One thing I always miss and remember is that my parents left this world too early. The sacrifice they made, they did not wait to see the results. How I wish they had waited to see and eat fruits of their labour,’ Obasanjo said.

The former president, however, said he draws consolation from the Yoruba belief that the dead always look behind to see happenings after them on earth.

With that belief, he said he was sure his late parents would still be happy in their graves even now.

“But going by what Yoruba believe and say, that the dead always watch over their beloved ones and see happenings around them, I am convinced that my parents are happy in their graves, as they watch over me,” he said.

On his birthday, Mr. Obasanjo said he would continue to appreciate, praise adore and worship God, just as he admitted that all those who worked and are still working with him are loyal.

He expressed his appreciation to his aides and workers. Obasanjo said his success would not be without their commitment and loyalty.

He advised people to serve humanity, noting that it is when humanity is serve that one can serve God.

He said he did not believe that God has created a bad situation for Nigeria, or in any particularly country in Africa.

“We must be able to serve humanity, if we can’t serve humanity, we can’t serve God. I do not believe God had created bad situation for Nigeria, or any particular country in Africa. If things are not going right, we must blame ourselves,” he said.

The former president urged Nigerians to take seriously governance and moral values among other things to get things right in the country.

  • NECO withholds results of Borno students, explains why

The National Examination Commission, NECO, recently released the results of the examinations conducted in June/July but withheld that of candidates from Borno State.

The NECO State Officer, Ahmad Ma’aji, confirmed that the agency withheld the results for candidates in the state.

Ma’aji explained that the action was necessitated by the inability of Borno State Ministry of Education to complete payment of its candidates’ examination fees.

“The ministry only paid part of the total cost of the examination fees. Candidates could access their results as soon as the ministry made payment of the outstanding balance.

“The examination fees are N11, 350 per candidate,” he said.

Mr. Ma’aji disclosed that over 29,000 candidates of both public and private schools sat for the examination in the state, adding that the council had released results of some candidates whose payment were complete.

Most of those released are believed to be for students of private schools, although the official did not disclose specific details of those released.

Meanwhile, students of public secondary schools in Borno have expressed concern over the withholding of examination results by NECO and the West African Examination Council, WAEC.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the two agencies withheld results for the June/July 2017 examinations due to the inability of the state government to settle outstanding fees.

The state government had pledged to contribute 75 percent of the total cost while the candidates were to pay the remaining 25 percent.

A cross-section of the candidates, who spoke to NAN, on Friday in Maiduguri, described the situation as “worrisome.’’

Jidda Mustafa, a student of Government College Maiduguri, said that he could not apply for entry into any institution of the higher learning due to non-release of the results by NECO.

Jidda lamented that the trend might affect his chances of securing admission this academic year.

“Most of the candidates could not apply for admissions due to non-release of examination results by WAEC and NECO.

“It is disheartening to see that while private school students are pursuing their admission into universities and other institutions of higher learning, students of public schools are helpless,” he said.

Fati Abubakar, also a student of Government Girls College Maiduguri, who corroborated the opinion, called on the government to pay the examination fees to enable them to further their education.

Shettima Umar, the Vice Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, in the state, decried the withholding of SSCE and NECO examination results in the state.

Mr. Umar said that the ugly trend was inimical to sustainable development in the sector and called on the government to settle the fees to facilitate release of the examination result on time.

“Urgent measures are necessary to save the situation and assist the students to apply for admission into institutions of learning,” he said.

In his reaction, Hassan Aminami, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, said that the ministry had paid 50 percent of its counterpart contribution of the examination fees.

Mr. Aminami explained that the ministry was expected to pay 25 percent of the amount while the Ministry for Local Government and candidates were to contribute 25 percent each, respectively.

He added that the ministry and candidates had so far paid 75 percent of the total cost while the remaining 25 percent would be settled by the ministry for local government.

“We are concerned about the situation and we intimated the ministry for local government over the impending issue.

“They are working on it and payment of the remaining 25 percent will be made soon so that students can access their result,” Mr. Aminami said.
