    UNILAG shifts resumption date for students

    The Management of University of Lagos, UNILAG, has announced Oct. 30 as the new resumption date for academic activities for the 2023/2024 academic session.

    The new date is contained in a statement by Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head, Communication Unit of the institution, issued to newsmen on Saturday night in Lagos.

    The university had earlier scheduled its resumption for the session for both the new and returning students for Oct. 3.

    According to the statement, the shift in date is to allow for the completion of renovation works in all the halls of residence and the classrooms.

    This, it said, was being done in a bid to create a more conducive teaching and learning environment.

    “Management of the University of Lagos wishes to announce that Monday, Oct. 30, has now been fixed as the official commencement date for academic activities for the 2023/2024 academic session.

    “Students, both newly admitted and returning, parents, guardians and the general public are to take note,” Alaga-Ibraheem stated.

    The Senate of the University of Ibadan (UI) has approved that academic activities would resume in the university with effect from Monday.

    This is contained in a release by Mrs Olubunmi Faluyi, Registrar and Secretary to Council of the institution, on Wednesday in Ibadan.

    According to her, the Senate of the institution at a special meeting held on Oct.17, 2022 approved Monday Oct. 24, 2022 as resumption date for the continuation of the 2021/2022 academic session.

    “Consequently, Halls of Residence would be opened from Oct.23, 2022.

    “On behalf of the Council and Senate of the University, we wish our students journey mercies as they return to the campus,” Faluyi said.

    The Kano State Government has pegged the resumption date for boarders and day students to be the 11th and 12th of September 2022.

    said on Friday that the resumption dates for boarding and Day secondary schools remained 11th and 12th September 2022 respectively.

    Director, Public Enlightenment of Ministry of Education, Aliyu Yusuf made the development made via a circular made available to newsmen in Kano on Friday.

    “The attention of the Kano state ministry of Education has been drawn to a widely circulated rumor that the resumption dates for schools from the 3rd term vacation have been extended by one week

    “This rumor was cooked up by some elements who always want to create confusion in the minds of the parents and guardians whenever a vacation or break time is approaching an end.

    “Parents and guardians of pupils and students of public and private primary and post-primary schools in the state should therefore note that the resumption dates for boarding schools remain Sunday 11th September while that of the Day schools is 12th September 2022 respectively,” Yusuf said.

    While thanking the parents and guardians for their support and cooperation, the ministry is urging them to ensure compliance with the resumption dates as penalty awaits defaulters.

    Many schools in the Northern part of the country have been shut down due to insecurity, banditry, and kidnappings ravaging the region.

    ASUU Strike: UNILAG clears air on resumption date

    The University of Lagos  (UNILAG)chapter of the  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has cleared the air on speculations that it has called off the strike.

    ASUU UNILAG chapter has restated its commitment to the ongoing strike embarked upon by public university lecturers in the country.

    A statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairperson of the branch, Dele Ashiru, read in part, “The attention of the leadership of ASUU-UNILAG has been drawn to a fake and dubious news purporting that ‘ASUU-UNILAG chapter gives up for the first time, votes for suspension of the strike.’

    “This is to inform the general public that the strike in UNILAG is still in force and there is no threat to it whatsoever.

    “ASUU-UNILAG is convinced that the strike action is a just and patriotic struggle to save the public university system in Nigeria from imminent collapse.”

    ASUU had on Monday, declared an indefinite strike after its National Executive Meeting.

    Recall that ASUU declared a warning strike on February 14, 2022, before declaring an indefinite strike to press home their demands.

    ASUU: Varsity fixes August 29 as resumption date

    The management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, has approved that the institution should pull out of the ASUU strike and resume academic activities on the 29th of August,2022.

    This was coming after six months the ASUU members, the EKSU chapter, had joined the ongoing strike declared by the university lecturers to press for urgent reform of the country’s ivory towers among another myriad of demands.

    EKSU, after consultations with various unions in the institution unanimously agreed that it should be opened for academic activities.

    The decision to re-open was taken at the institution’s management meeting last week .

    Recall that ASUU president, Professor Osodeke had on one occasion while granting an interview on Arise TV, called State Universities ‘quacks’

    The management had risen in defense of the university and called on ASUU’s leader to retract the comment and tender an apology

    The Vice-Chancellor said the resumption was a decision taken by stakeholders of the institution.

    “It was a decision taken by the stakeholders about the effect of this prolonged strike on the institution and our position has been made public about our intention to begin work and restore normalcy”.

    Also, a statement by the EKSU’s Registrar, Mr. Ife Oluwole, said the resumption affected the old students and the newly admired ones for the 2021/22 academic session.

    Oluwole said: “Stakeholders in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, which included the Vice Chancellor and other Principal Officers, Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, Professors and Officers on grade level 14 and above met on Sunday, 21st August 2022 to review the situation in the University.

    “Stakeholders noted the socio-economic effects of the current strike action embarked upon by the staff unions in the University on other stakeholders (parents, students, alumni, and staff) and the plea by the parents.

    “It further noted that the industrial action is having negative effects not only on the students but also on the University.

    Kaduna-Abuja Route: NRC postpones resumption date

    The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended the resumption of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route.

    NewsGuru.com reports that an Abuja bound train travelling from Kaduna was attacked by bandits few months back where eight passengers died during the attack, while many were kidnapped.

    NRC stopped operations of Kaduna -Abuja route over the March 31st train attack.

     

    Meanwhile, the train service was scheduled to resume on Monday, May 23, 2022, but in a statement on Friday, Yakubu Mahmood, the spokesperson of NRC, said a new date would be announced soon.

    “Sequel to our earlier Press Release No. 10 dated 16th May 2022 on the above caption, the General Public is kindly invited to note the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is announcing a shift in the resumption date for Abuja Kaduna,” the statement reads.

    Mahmood has assured the affected families that it was working hard to secure the victims’ release.

    The Kaduna State Government has said news of the purported resumption date of schools in the state 18th January, 2021 is fake and mischievous.

    Permanent Secretary State Ministry of Education, Phoebe Sukai Yayi made this known in a press statement made available to TheNewsGuru.com.com, TNG on Friday.

    According to her, “…the ministry is informing the public that the news is FAKE and MISCHIEVOUS as Kaduna State Government is yet to make any announcement on that. The state government is assessing the Covid-19 pandemic with keen interest and will issue a statement when it seems fit and safe for the students to resume”

    “Meanwhile, the public is hereby enjoined to disregard the purported statement” she added.

    TNG reports that the Federal Government recently approved schools to reopen on January 18 but under strict COVID-19 protocols.

    FG announces resumption date for Unity Schools nationwide

    Dr Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education has approved the reopening of Unity Schools across the country on Oct. 11.

    This was contained in a letter signed by the minister on Wednesday, in Lagos.

    Adamu said that the approval was for students in Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School.

    He said that the action was to enable students who have been at home since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic to complete their academic session which would end in December.

    The minister advised that COVID-19 protocols should be strictly observed in the schools to prevent it spread among students.

    “However, schools that have not concluded their 2nd term examination should round off and commence 3rd term immediately which is expected to end in December,” he said.

  • BREAKING: Lagos announces resumption date for students ahead of 2020 WASSCE

    Lagos State has agreed with the Federal Government’s pronouncement, directing students in exit classes in Nigeria to resume on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

    On Wednesday, the government ordered all the SS3 and Technical Studies (TEC3) students in day and boarding schools to resume on Monday, August 3, 2020.

    The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo.

    She explained that the decision “is to allow for revision classes and adequate preparation ahead of their forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).”

    Adefisayo cited the new commencement date the West African Examination Council (WAEC) confirmed for the 2020 WASSCE.

    The examination is scheduled to commence on the August 17, 2020.

    The commissioner stressed that only SS3 and Technical Study Three (TEC3) students are permitted to resume.

    The official enjoined all schools to follow the required public health guidelines and protocols for re-opening.

    She noted that while students in SS3 and TEC 3 will sit for their examinations, the government is considering the option of using first and second term exams performance or continuous assessment to promote students in other exit classes.

    Adefisayo revealed that various meetings have been held with the stakeholders in the education, health and safety sectors to ensure that adequate precautionary measures were put in place before resumption.

    “The Office of Education Quality Assurance will be going round all the schools across the State to monitor the level of safety and protocol compliance expected to be put in place by both private and public schools”, she added.

    On Tuesday, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) spoke on Federal Government’s decision to reopen schools.
