He gave no reason for this decision in his handle.
Ighalo, tweeting on Friday said “This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to take. It has been an amazing five years journey, but after due consultation and extensive discussions with my family, I have decided that it is time for me to retire from the national team.

Like Mikel, Ighalo announces retirement from national team

Nigerian forward, Odion Ighalo, has announced his retirement following the Super Eagle’s third placed victory over Tunisia on night at Egypt 2019.
Odion, who is the highest goal scorer in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, informed coach Gernot Rohr of his decision before leaving to join his club in China immediately after the game.
“He had discussed his decision with the coach before the third-place match, saying that the constant abuse was taking a toll on his young family but he was advised to keep it under wraps for the moment. After the game, he gave his jersey as a souvenir to the coach, said his goodbyes and left,” a source stated.
Prior to the game, the 30-year-old posted a message on his WhatsApp status update that simply said “Final Game”.
“He has been very strong for us,” Rohr said, “And it is sad that he wants not to continue.
“But the door always is open for him any time.”
Ighalo, something of a late bloomer, made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2015 as the Super Eagles lost 1-0 to Uganda in a friendly.
He made 35 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 16 goals.
He was also top scorer through the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with four goals and he could also finish the tournament as top scorer having scored five in Egypt.
Recall that the team captain, Mikel John Obi also earlier announced his retirement from the national team.

  • Tinubu boasts of sending his ‘friend’ Atiku, running mate Obi into retirement on Saturday

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, said on Thursday in Lagos that the APC would send the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, into retirement on Saturday for the good of Nigeria.

Tinubu said this in a statement by his Media Officer, Tunde Rahman.

This election is more than a contest between two men, President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for that one exalted chair.

Look, I have made no attempts to hide my friendship with Atiku. We are friends before this election and hopefully we will be friends after Feb. 16 when he goes into retirement.

For the good of Nigeria and even the good of Atiku himself, we will do well to send him into retirement on Saturday.

Perhaps, we should also send Obi into retirement along with his boss come Feb. 16. Perhaps together they might manage to discover the place where they might learn compassion for the common man,” he said.

Tinubu said there was not much good that could be found in the policies and programmes announced by the PDP.

Atiku’s answers to our economic challenges are to shrink and restrain government from being the active catalyst toward a diversified economy that assured broadly-shared prosperity through the just allocation of wealth and reward according to sweat and toil put forth by the Nigerian people.

They seek an unfair, unjust and unequal Nigeria. Their definition of Nigeria is a nation run by the greedy, for the profit of the rich, at the command of the mighty,” he said.

Tinubu said the objective of the APC was to remake Nigeria into a great nation.

Our vision is the opposite of theirs, Unlike the PDP, we, the APC, are anchored to the proposition that every Nigerian is entitled to equal access and sufficient economic opportunity so that he may use his talents, skills and committed exertion to carve for himself and his loved ones the decent and good life every human being seeks.

The ordinary person is not to be shortchanged of the fair dividends of his honest sweat and diligent labour simply because he may be poor or because the powerful and wealthy want more.

Because of the APC’s concerns for the struggles of the average person, we launched beneficial social welfare programmes such as the school feeding programme, Trader-Moni and N-Power.

As such, we have made progress caring for our most needy and vulnerable through these and other innovative and unprecedented policies. These programmes are of the type all great nations do for their citizens,” he said.

Tinubu said the APC was not satisfied by what had been accomplished, saying that what had been done was the opening phase of a more ambitious undertaking.

We have just begun to fight poverty and reform this economy on the scale required. Though we have helped millions, several millions more are needed to end poverty’s stranglehold on their lives.

We must expand the scope and reach of our social welfare programmes to encompass those other people who have been denied access to the productive economy through no fault of their own.

Additionally, we must put idle hands to work to build a modern infrastructure that will energise agricultural output in rural areas and foster labour-intensive industrialisation in our growing cities, ” he said.

The former governor of Lagos State said the second term of Buhari would be dedicated to changing the structure of the economy for the better.

We must amend our national economic architecture to unlock the full potentials of our people and our land. To me, this is the core mandate of government for and of the people.

Throughout the campaign, we have talked about taking Nigeria to the Next Level. To me, this Next Level is informed by forging a new partnership between government and the governed to create a more just and prosperous economy for all.

The beginning of this new partnership is already taking shape. As stated before, we have initiated a first phase of social welfare programmes,” he said.

Tinubu, a former senator, urged the people of South West to join APC in implementing the Next Level agenda.

The South West has always been at the vanguard of progressive governance in Nigeria. Today should be no exception to this historic role we have played.

I ask the people of the South West to join the APC so that we attain the Next Level by implementing this bold and good new partnership built on the following pillars: power, infrastructure, housing, industrialisation, agriculture and social security,” he said.

Tinubu said the coming elections were a choice between progress and retreat.

The future is uncertain until we enter it. Feb. 16 is Election Day and on that day Nigeria shall step into its future.

How you vote on that day will determine whether we walk into the future in a manner that guides our subsequent steps toward the national greatness that calls to us or will we walk into it backwards as if feebly trying to reinvent the past.

One road leads to a certain replay of the economic injustices of the past. It is a road well-worn with familiar pitfalls and setbacks built into the very nature of it.

The other road provides the truest, brightest chance for us to enter into our hopeful future but only if we are brave enough to believe in our capacity to improve our nation,” he said.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to vote for Buhari for a secured future.

This is the future we must enter. This is the future the APC champions. This is future you must choose on Election Day. Vote for yourselves by voting for President Buhari,” he said.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the elections to ensure a violence-free exercise.

In the exercise of our civic duty at this historic and important moment, I ask that you conduct yourselves with utmost tolerance and in equal peace towards both political ally and political opponent.

Let us show the world that we know the true meaning of democracy. On Election Day let not an angry hand be raised against any Nigerian.

No matter our political differences, let us remember we are of one land and of the same national family.

This election shall be free and fair and conducted without the arm of violence. For this is as Nigeria and our democratic exercise must be to achieve the excellent destination intended for us.”

  • Retirement: Buhari, IGP meet in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed doors with the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting started around 4.30p.m when the President returned to the seat of power after attending a function at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

A similar meeting was also held on Friday 4th of January, 2019 shortly after the Jumma’at prayer at the State House mosque.

Idris was expected to retire from service on attainment of the mandatory 35 years in service on the 15th of January, 2019.

Idris was appointed by President Buhari on 21 March 2016 to replace Solomon Arase, who retired from the police force on 21 June 2016.

The 59- year old Ibrahim Idris enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.

While there are filers that the president might extend the IG’s tenure, politicians across party lines have kicked against such. They insisted that the IG must step aside for the next most qualified officer.

The meeting was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

The 27-year-old featured in all Super Eagles’ games at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and got a goal against Argentina at the Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg.

    Mesut Ozil ( Germany)

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil announced his immediate retirement from international football after the World Cup.

The German gave reasons for his retirement, claiming to have been the subject of “racism and disrespect” following his high-profile and controversial meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan prior to the World Cup.

The picture with Erdogan saw the Arsenal man pose with the Turkish president and German teammate Ilkay Gundogan.

    Gerard Pique (Spain)

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique confirmed his retirement from international football in August shortly after the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The 31-year-old centre-back made 102 appearances for his country between 2009 and 2018, scoring five times.

He was part of the Spain team that won their first World Cup in 2010, before adding the 2012 European Championship.

    David Silva (Spain)

Manchester City midfielder David Silva announced his retirement from international football in August after his participation with Spain at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Silva, 32, won the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 European Championship titles and played 125 times for Spain after making his debut in 2006.

He said he was “very proud” of his achievements with La Roja, and that the decision to retire was “one the most difficult of my career”.

Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill ( England)

England pair Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill stepped aside from international football to allow manager Gareth Southgate to bring younger players in, according to the players.

Vardy, who made his England debut against the Republic of Ireland in June 2015, made four appearances for England at this summer’s World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals.

While Chelsea defender Cahill, 32, scored five goals in 61 appearances for England, having made his debut in 2010, and captained the side on several occasions.

  • Oshiomhole to Saraki: Start preparing for retirement in 2019

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has said the people of Kwara State will retire the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, from active politics in 2019.

He said this on Monday in Abuja, while speaking with journalists at the end of a meeting of the party`s National Working Committee (NWC).

Mr Oshiomhole stressed that the way the people of Kwara voted in Saturday`s House of Representatives by-election in the state, was an attestation that they were tired of Mr Saraki mismanaging their political life.

I am sure Saraki would be politically retired by the good people of kwara whom he has mismanaged their economic and political rights over the years.

I am very excited about that and we think that this is something worth celebrating and we took time to celebrate it today,” Oshiomhole said.

He added that the APC was proud of the fact that since the assumption of the party`s current NWC which he headed on June 24, it had not lost any major election.

Mr Oshiomhole further added that the party`s victory in Saturday`s by-election in Bauchi, Kastina and Kwara states was a proof that the APC was still the preferred party of Nigerians.

More outstanding for me and the APC, both the leadership and the membership, is the humiliating defeat that Sen. Bukola Saraki suffered in the hands of Kwara people.

What the people of Kwara have done to him is that they are going to politically bury him come February next year and he has seen the first warning,” he said.

He said Kwara people, based on the outcome of the election, had dealt with Mr Saraki a political blow.

This, he said, was most humiliating since Mr Saraki was the acclaimed leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, and had recently led elections in other states.

Here is a native doctor who was busy going to other states, now unable to heal his own people in his own state, that defeat in Kwara is most outstanding,” the APC national chairman stressed.

He said this was particularly so, because the candidate who won the election was not put in place by anybody close to Mr Saraki.

He, however, said that the APC would not accept a Nigerian variant where a minority party presided over the affairs of the National Assembly, saying that it was not right.

  • Ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme announces retirement after battle with leukaemia

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has announced his retirement from football after a year-long battle with acute leukaemia, the English Premier League club said on Friday.

The 32-year-old who was Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper has been with Wolves for his entire career, making over 200 appearances for the club.

Ikeme said his decision to retire comes on medical advice after “a tough year and intense chemotherapy’’.

“I spoke with the doctor and he suggested I should retire, because of the toll the treatment has taken on my body,” Ikeme told the club website.

“He thinks it’s what is best for me and I can’t really risk trying to come back. My health is the priority.

“I want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things with my life in danger, it’s the minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.”

Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017 but entered into complete remission only last month.

Last month, he had announced on his twitter handle: “After a tough year and intense chemotherapy treatment I would like to let everyone know I am in complete remission.

“I still have hurdles to get over to be cured but I can hopefully now move forward with some normality.’’

Ikeme was in goal for Nigeria’s first three matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

These were the home and away ties against Swaziland in the preliminary stage, and away to Zambia in the opener to the group phase campaign before being diagnosed of acute leukaemia.

His first cap was in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in September 2015.

  • We lose 9,028 officers annually to death, dismissal, retirement – IG

The Inspector General of Police ( IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris says the Nigeria Police Force loses 9,028 officers to death, dismissal, and retirement annually.

Idris made the disclosure at the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and other top-ranking officers of the force on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IGP said that the development had seriously affected the manpower of the force.

He noted that the 308, 000 police workforce was grossly inadequate for the effective policing of the more than 180 million people in the country.

The police boss said that the country was far below the UN standard of one policeman to 400 persons adding that the Federal Government had approved the recruitment of 6,000 policemen into the rank and file.

“The issue of manpower is one problem the Nigeria Police Force is facing,” he said.

On the attachment of policemen to private persons, Idris said that the force would review it to ensure that they worked for the general public.

“There is a need for us to have a police that will work for the generality of Nigerians,” he said.

He said that he had directed police commissioners and zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to compile the number of policemen attached to individuals in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 directed that police personnel attached to unauthorized and some prominent persons in the country be withdrawn and deployed to confront the security challenges in the nation.

The Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr Mike Okiro, said that more than 150,000 policemen were attached to unauthorized persons and Very Important Personalities (VIPs) in the country.

He said that the meeting was aimed at having a comprehensive resolution on the issue of illegal firearms in the country.

Idris noted that the alleged arming of militia groups by state governments and individuals was not in the interest of the country.

He urged the commissioners of police to embark on campaign against illegal firearms in their various commands.

Idris said that plans were underway to construct an armoury for the storage of illegal firearms seized from militias across the country.

He said that the force had taken several measures to check security challenges across the country.
