Rice farmers lament crippling local production

The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Lagos State Chapter, has blamed unscrupulous elements for frustrating the cultivation of local rice.

The RIFAN Chairman, Mr Raphael Hunsa, who disclosed this in an interview on Sunday in Lagos, spoke against the backdrop of the recent hike in the price of rice.

“We really need God to have mercy on our country Nigeria, the Federal Government is trying its possible best but some fellows are hell-bent in frustrating the existence of local rice.

“They know that if local rice exists and thrives, they will be no more importation of foreign rice or indiscriminate increase of the produce.

“With this current hike in the price of rice, we want the Federal Government not to relent on its efforts, they should continue to support and empower local farmers, one day we will get there, in achieving price stability.

“We also want to urge the government, that in the provision of inputs or machinery for farmers, let it come directly to the farmers and not diverted to political farmers.

“If it comes to the farmers direct, proper monitoring will be assured,” Hunsa told NAN in the interview.

He urged commodity heads not to collide with unscrupulous persons in destroying the economy.

“We also want commodity heads to know that the government is trying, they should not collide with unscrupulous persons to destroy our economy.

“If the government continues intervening in the sector, the price of rice will be stabilised,” he said.

On his part, the Chairman Southwest and Lagos State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Mr Femi Oke, called on the Federal Government to involve the farmers’ associations in its policy decisions.

“The price of rice went down for a while because there was tax exemption for its importation by the Federal Government for about six months.

“So, the subsidy period is over now, hence the current hike in the price of the produce.

“However, in making decisions like this, the government should get the farmers’ associations involved. They should ask what we really want because the tax exemption lasted for a while but did not solve the price issue.

“If we are not brought on board, we may not get it right, we are the stakeholders in the sector and the government should involve us in its policy decisions.

“So, to get the price of rice stable, the government needs to liaise with stakeholders like AFAN,” Oke said.

He called for the empowerment of local farmers with inputs to boost rice production in the country.

“The waiver on tax for the importation of rice is not the solution, the government needs to empower local farmers.

“Rice is like a staple food  in Nigeria, there is no household that is not taking the rice. If I am not mistaken, if the father or mother is not taking rice, the children will surely take it. So we should keep all hands on deck to stabilise the price of rice.

“Let us utilise our arable lands and cultivate more rice for the populace, we should not just concentrate on building houses and forget cultivation,” he said.

A 50kg bag of rice sold between N52,000 and N55,000 depending on its species from second quarter in 2025 till last month.

However, the same quantity sells between N75,000 and N85,000 depending on the species at the moment.

Local annual rice production capacity is estimated at 8.44 million tonnes, while Nigeria also imports about two million metric tonnes of rice annually, making it one of the largest rice importers globally.

VIDEO: Auditorium, two overflow halls filled; hundreds in queues as Apostle Selman shares 6000 bags of rice to mark birthday

Apostle Joshua Selman, a renowned Nigerian preacher and founder of Eternity Network International (ENI), marked his 45th birthday on Wednesday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Apostle Selman, born 25th June 1980, marked his 45th birthday, distributing 6000 bags of rice to members of his congregation and the needy.

It was gathered that the auditorium at Chida Event Centre, where Selman holds the Koinonia weekly apostolic and prophetic meeting in Abuja, was filled to the brim. The two overflow halls were also filled to the brim with hundreds of people waiting in queues outside the event centre.

“We are going to be distributing the welfare materials. I know that there are so many people. Some of you have waited impatiently outside to just receive that,” Apostle Selman acknowledged.

Selman instructed that every member of his congregation, including the workers, must get a bag of rice, whether they need it or not, stressing, “in this house, charity begins at home”.

Speaking on the reason he decided to share the bags of rice to mark his birthday, he said: “Let me tell you why I do this. It is not a show. It is an opportunity to be able to give, and it is my seed.

“When I do that, it is from my heart. It is a communication of love. It was 5000 bags but we have added to 6000 bags. We are hoping that it should be able to go round.

“I have instructed that everybody should get it, including the workers. In this house, charity begins at home. So, it is for everybody and not just those outside. Whether you need it or not, you will have it. It is a seed with love from me.

“We thank those who have been waiting patiently outside. Don’t kill anybody on my birthday,” the Apostle said during a service to mark the birthday, while charging security operatives to ensure orderliness in the distribution of the rice.

  • Multiple deaths in Badagry not due to poisonous rice – Official

Multiple deaths in Badagry not due to poisonous rice – Official

Dr Dorcas Oladunjoye,  Medical Officer of Health, Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State,  says   suspected cholera outbreak in Zongo community, an Hausa/Fulani settlement in Badagry is behind deaths in the area.

Oladunjoye made the clarification in an interview with newsmen in Badagry on Thursday.

Recall that the Badagry area was in panic over multiple deaths that  was attributed to alleged consumption of poisonous rice seized from smugglers and sold by  Customs.

The Seme Area  Customs Command on Sunday, dismissed the allegation of releasing poisoned rice seized from smugglers, which had reportedly resulted in the  multiple deaths in the town.

The spokesman for the command, CSC Isah Sulaiman, denied the allegation in a statement in Seme, Lagos.

Oladunjoye said that a case of suspected cholera outbreak was discovered in one healthcare centre in Ajara, Badagry, two weeks ago, when a patient was brought from a community in Seme, stooling and vomiting.

“We swung into action, when it was further confirmed that they had been experiencing the sickness for many days which resulted in many deaths in the area.

“It was even the patient that made us to know that people had  been stooling and vomiting in that community for some days.

“We went into the community with some of our staff and took permission from their leader  (Seriki) to investigate the problems.

“We discovered that many of the residents are suffering from the suspected disease, we contacted  the Lagos state Ministry of Health and relevant agencies.

“We are aware of a suspected cholera outbreak in Zongo community. There is absolutely no evidence of poisonous rice being the cause of the deaths,” she said.

Oladunjoye said that teams from the Lagos state ministry of health, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Primary Health Care Board, and Health District V had visited the affected community.

She said that food and water samples had been collected and sent for laboratory analysis but results are still pending.

According to her, Zongo community’s living conditions are alarmingly unsanitary, and their primary sources of water are contaminated.

Also speaking, Mr Sao Temitope, a Medical Health Laboratory Officer with Badagry-West LCDA, said he personally observed the same symptoms in the victims.

“There’s no doubt that we’re dealing with something waterborne, possibly cholera. The community is severely dirty. Safe water is nonexistent. This is a clear public health crisis,” he said.

Temitope confirmed that the council chairman, Joseph Gbenu had  already initiated a rapid response.

“Plans are underway to launch a full-scale public health sensitisation campaign across the community.

“Health educators will teach residents how to purify their water, practice better sanitation, and avoid food contamination,” he said.

Recall  that on May 6, the Oglogbo Community Development Association (CDA) issued a public warning, citing a sudden spike in deaths within five days.

The notice, signed by its chairman, Mr Timothy Semasa, urged residents, particularly food vendors  to act fast by boiling water, keeping their surroundings clean, and observing basic hygiene protocols.

  • NCS denies releasing poisoned rice seized from smugglers

NCS denies releasing poisoned rice seized from smugglers

The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has dismissed the allegation of releasing poisoned rice seized from smugglers, which had reportedly resulted in multiple deaths in the town.

The spokesman for the command, CSC Isah Sulaiman, denied the allegation in a statement on Sunday in Seme, Lagos.

According to him, the attention of the command has been drawn to the widely circulated unfounded and baseless allegation claiming that they seized and distributed bags of rice without the knowledge of the purported owner.

Recall that fear had gripped the residents of Seme border and Badagry communities on Wednesday following reports that contaminated rice, allegedly released by the NCS had caused multiple deaths, including that of a soldier.

The unverified claims suggested that the rice was cursed by its original owner after being seized and redistributed without his knowledge.

According to local sources, bags of rice confiscated by the NCS were later released into the market without the owner’s knowledge.

Sulaiman said the allegation also claimed that the owner allegedly invoked traditional powers leading to the death of individuals, including a soldier at Badagry.

“The Command wishes to categorically state that this narrative is entirely false, misleading and does not reflect the reality of the matter.

“The command has always adhered to NCS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for disposing of seized goods, which is guided by transparency, due process, and strict adherence to extant laws and guidelines.

“It is instructive to say that no incident within the Command’s Area of Responsibility (AoR) or among personnel corroborates the false claims of deaths resulting from rice consumption linked to the NCS,” he said.

Sulaiman, however, said some unscrupulous elements were wearing the garment of journalism to disinform members of the public with baseless, fictitious and malicious accusations to score cheap points instead of the social responsibility they were supposed to uphold.

“We urge the public to disregard this unfounded story and refrain from spreading false information that could incite fear or tarnish the image of the security agencies working tirelessly to safeguard the nation.

“The Seme command, under Dr Ben Oramalugo, remains committed to its mandate of revenue generation, suppressing smuggling, and facilitating legitimate trade professionally in accordance with extant government fiscal policies and laws,” he said.

FCCPC raids popular market over rebagged, underweight rice

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has raided and sealed some shops at Utako market for selling re-bagged and under-weight bags of rice.

Sealing the shops in Abuja on Tuesday, Mrs Boladale Adeyinka, the Director, Surveillance and Investigations Department of FCCPC, said the raid followed an intelligence gathered by the Commission.

She said the intelligence showed that traders in the market were re-bagging local rice in foreign rice bags and selling them at exorbitant prices as imported rice.

Adeyinka described the move as exploitative, and against consumer economic interests.

She said the products would be confiscated and the Commission would follow the trail to fish out the producers and branders of the rice.

”We are carrying out this operation to confirm and validate the intelligence that local rice, our own rice is being packaged in foreign brands and sold as foreign rice.

”And because the appetite of Nigerians are for foreign brands which are no longer in the market, the market cartels are now going about re-bagging the local rice and selling them as foreign rice.

”That is exploitative and against consumer economic interests.

”As a matter of fact, for Mama Gold, as far as 2015, they stopped all their export.

”This is 2025 and yet, like you heard from the testimony of the trader, he is aware that they don’t sell those sizes anymore.

”So that is why we are here,” she said.

Adeyinka said the traders found culpable would face administrative penalties and fines under the FCCP Act.

”They will follow due process based on the infractions,” she said.

Adeyinka warned consumers of foreign rice to buy from importers or distributors to ensure the quality of the product.

Some of the traders who their shops were sealed feigned ignorance of the re-bagging of the products.

Mr Emmanuel Nneji, one of the traders, said he was not aware that Stallion company had stopped production of the rice in a long while.

According to Nneji, he buys from his suppliers in Kaduna and Kano States.

”If there had been a publication that says that this particular product is no more in the market, I would not have bought it, because I do not want to buy goods and at the end of everything, I will lose it.

”So what am begging is that even if they say I should make sure that I return it back, that tomorrow they are coming, and they don’t want to find it, I will do it,” he said.

Another trader who refused to mention his name, said he usually bought Stallion rebagged rice due to its increasing demand in the market.

”I buy the rice because people ask of it a lot but I still sell the 10kg for N18,000 and not the normal N25,000 to N28,000 which the foreign brand is sold,” he said.

Mr Alex Igwemma, the Secretary, Utako Market Traders Association, frowned at the unannounced visit of the Commission to the market without prior notice to the market officials

Igwemma who said that those in the business ought to have known that the products had not been in existence, appealed to traders in the market to ensure they purchase quality products for sale in the market.

NAN reports that no fewer than five wholesale shops filled with bags of rice were sealed by the Commission and the owners invited to FCCPC for further investigations.

Declan Rice sets Champions League record

Arsenal star Declan Rice set a Champions League record during Tuesday’s quarter-final first-leg fixture against Real Madrid.

The England international became the first player to score two direct free-kick goals in a knockout stage match in the UEFA Champions League.

Rice scored first for the Gunners in the 58th minute before completing his brace from a set piece, as Mikel Arteta’s men secured a 3-0 win.

After his heroics, the 26-year-old was substituted for Kieran Tierney in the 80th minute of the thrilling encounter in London.

Arsenal will be eyeing a spot in the semi-final with a favorable result in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

EPL: Declan Rice rescues Arsenal from defeat

Arsenal came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Manchester United in the Premier League (PL), the second consecutive H2H to end level after 90 minutes as the Red Devils ended a four-match losing streak in league H2Hs.

Fresh from their sensational midweek victory over PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal looked bright in the early stages and almost had an early opener when Mikel Merino fired marginally wide in the 10th minute.

While Alejandro Garnacho caused occasional problems down the right, the visitors largely remained in control but struggled to break through the Red Devils’ backline, with Martin Ødegaard seeing his strike from range saved by André Onana.

Thomas Partey then became the latest visiting player to have an unsuccessful shot from outside the box. Leandro Trossard then fired wide following an improvised touch and could only divert the ball from Ødegaard’s dinked pass into Onana’s grasp.

Despite having offered very little going forward during most of the first half, United went ahead before half time as Garnacho won a free-kick that Bruno Fernandes sent flying into the top corner with his side’s first shot on target of the match.

Ayden Heaven came on for his PL debut ahead of the restart having joined United from Arsenal in January, and the 18-year-old settled quickly.

The Gunners still worked opportunities from corner variations, although Ødegaard and Rice were both unable to beat Onana.

The hosts’ wing-backs combined shortly after as Diogo Dalot found Noussair Mazraoui, who forced a brilliant save from David Raya.

The Gunners goalkeeper then stopped an instinctive flick from Zirkzee, before Trossard’s attempt at the other end trickled harmlessly wide.

Rice eventually added the clinical touch the visitors had been craving, sending a first-time effort from Jurriën Timber’s pass in off the post.

There wasn’t to be a second for either team as Onana palmed Gabriel Martinelli’s strike past the post.

Rice and Gabriel Magalhães then made vital interventions to deny Rasmus Højlund, while Raya made a brilliant save to deny Fernandes in stoppage time as Arsenal played out their second consecutive draw in the PL, which leaves the Gunners 15 points behind leaders Liverpool.

This was also United’s third draw after 90 minutes from their last four matches across all competitions, which was enough to take them up one place.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice is urging the board to back manager Mikel Arteta in buying a new striker this month.

After victory at Champions League opponents Dinamo Zagreb, Rice admitted the players are now feeling their lack of options in attack.

“I think now where we’ve lost Gabi (Gabriel Jesus), he’s probably going to be out for a year with an ACL, that’s really tough,” he said.

“I’m sure the manager is probably going to look for something, because tonight we’ve had to bring Tierney on left wing, we’ve had to bring Zin (Oleksandr Zinchenko) in on left wing so we’re a bit short up there.

“I’m not surprised if we are going to do something.”

HUNGER! Police nab man for stabbing neighbour to death over rice

A 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, identified simply as Christian, to death during a dispute over rice.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, Delta State, following an argument that escalated into a fatal altercation.

While confirming the development on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, said “It is confirmed, and the suspect is in custody.

The two were fighting and injured themselves badly.
    Unfortunately, one, Christian, died.”

Eyewitnesses explained that the altercation started when rice was being shared along Boyo Road in Ogwanja. An argument ensued between Onyejekwe and the deceased, leading to a physical fight.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Christian and Daniel started dragging the rice, and during the fight, Daniel picked a bottle and stabbed Christian multiple times.

The vigilante rushed him to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.”

  • Deadly rice stampedes: Suppose President Tinubu bans rice? – By Ikeddy Isiguzo

Deadly rice stampedes: Suppose President Tinubu bans rice? – By Ikeddy Isiguzo

    By Ikeddy ISIGUZO

ONCE President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addresses Nigerians it is clear that his silence is actually golden, as it gives chances to guess what the President feels about ordinary Nigerians, the hungry, the poor, the weak, those excluded from Tinubu’s concerns because they are not rich.

The President rushing in with a media chat, after 18 months in office, and days after the “poverty stampede” in Ibadan, where mainly children died, was thought to be an opportunity to explain to Nigerians, elicit their support as they go through a crushing economic crisis that the President gloats about as if the entire purpose of his policies is to inflict pains.

The deaths in Ibadan that were over 35, were followed by similar incidents in a church in Abuja, and an individual’s event in Okija. The deaths resulted from free distribution of rice to the needy.

Poverty once personal, private, is now public, and deadly. Just blame rice.

Are opponents using free rice to distract the President from focusing on his economic policies? The President should ban rice for more clarity. No rice, no stampede, no deaths. One of my teachers said the solution to headache was decapitation – no head, no headache, or any ache for that matter.

We remember Tinubu promised Nigerians “agbado (corn) and cassava”. Not rice.

More people have fallen into poverty without the President’s permission. Should they? Could this account for the President not knowing about them? What really does the President know about Nigerians?

Does he know that more people would have died if they knew of these events? Food is beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians. Tinubu does not feel the impact of his harsh economic practices of lavish spending on presidential consumptions, unproductive as they are.

Some call the spendings reckless. Would you blame them? In the midst of a drifting economy, soaring inflation, no jobs, hunger, anger, capped with insecurity, the President bought jets, including one for the Vice President, and maintains a bloated cabinet.

He used the presidential chat as a platform to defend his Ministers. They are performing. He sounded as if he needed more people like the bunch that maintains a distance from the daily challenges people face.

For the President to see “switching off things” as the solution to poor electricity supply – and the frequency with which the national grid collapses – was one indication that governance has become a joke. When the Minister of Power, months ago, held the same position on electricity, the public tore him to shreds. The Minister apologise.

Tinubu blamed the organisers for the stampede, “I see this as a very great error on the part of the organisers.” He said he had been giving out foodstuffs, including envelopes, smoothly at his Bourdillon residence in the past 25 years. “If you do not have enough to give, don’t publicise it,” he advised organisers. The organisers too are poor, and have no Bourdillon pedigrees. These things count.

Do not expect Tinubu to blame the new wave of incremental poverty his hope agenda has renewed. He did not. He will not. If Tinubu halts the slide to absolute poverty for more Nigerians, there would be no deadly rice stampedes, and no organisers to blame.

Other Nigerians have organised these events for years without incidents. Large crowds would turn up and go home home safely. Was it not rice they shared? What is the difference now?

People are out searching for something to eat, anything. Even if “pure water” is being shared, there will be stampede. Our people are living by the minute. They have lost hope.

Nigerians have no assurance that someone cares about their efforts to survive. Millions of our compatriots are ready to do anything to survive. While at it, insecurity is not allowing them to breathe. Sadly, more of our people are falling into crimes with the times.

Employment opportunities are shrinking. The few jobs available are for relations of those in power, the rich, the very rich, the same ones who accuse us of greed. Do they have a different meaning for greed?

Last October, the Senate President, His Excellency Obong Godswill Akpabio on the floor of the Senate advised poor Nigerians, “Times are difficult, wherever you see free food, please endeavour to avail yourself”. Could the people have followed Akpabio’s perspective of the solution to poverty and the hard times?

Mocking the poor is Akpabio’s favourite idea of enlivening Senate sessions. “The prayer is that, let the poor breathe, and Senator Mustapha has seconded that the poor should breathe. Those who are in support of the additional prayer that the poor should be allowed to breathe, say ‘ayes’ and those who are against say ‘nay,’” Akpabio had said in July 2023 during a debate on the 15 per cent hike of electricity tariff. “The ayes have it! The poor must be allowed to breathe,” Akpabio concluded.

At a Niger Delta Development Commission event in July 2024, Akpabio mocked those who called for demonstration over the economic hardship. “Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating,” the former Akwa Ibom State Governor had said.

In Tinubu’s 18 months, poverty has pole-vaulted to dizzy heights that left Nigerians dazed. The only thing worse is the President’s spectacular performances when addressing his failure to rein in inflation as he drives the economy with the enthusiasm of kids playing with new toys.

People are hungry. Some people around the President call poor, hungry Nigerians “greedy”. Someone looking for what to eat is greedy? Have we fallen so low to justify the President’s unwillingness to accept that the problem is well beyond him?

Is he using his uncaring attitude as a buffer? He is the bigger problem by refusing to engage the people. Rather, he talks down on them when he decides to talk, well aware that he has nothing to say.

Take the tax bills, for instance, they have their merits. Tinubu thinks it is beneath him to discuss issues the radical bills raise. He sneers, the bills will be passed.

He takes responsibility for nothing. Tinubu sounds like Rik Rok and Shaggy in their famous 2000 hit song, “It Wasn’t Me”. The President provides answers without addressing our concerns. The answers are always dismissive.

The major lesson of 2024 is that Nigerians have to continue looking after themselves. It may even annoy those who are just discovering that they cannot decide when we should stop breathing.

Happy New Year, that is peaceful – prosperity will follow peace.

    Finally…

INFLATION to crash from 34.6% to 15% in 12 months, is what the President has promised in 2025. Safe trip, Mr. President.

FEDEERAL Capital Territory Minister Ezewoke Nyesom Wike said of those who accuse him of land grabbing, “People say land grabbing, do you grab what you are in charge of? I am in charge of land in Abuja how will I go and grab what I am in charge of? Those, who are grabbing land are whom I am dealing with”. Wike, at the Port Harcourt event where he spoke, did not forget to call Governor Sim Fubara, “this boy”.
