Manchester Utd legend Rio Ferdinand tips Liverpool to win quadruple

Former England and Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has tipped Liverpool to finish out very strong in all competitions this season.

Ferdinand urged Jurgen Klopp’s side to add the Champions League, FA Cup, Premier League to their Carabao Cup trophy this season and become the greatest team in history.

According to him, it would be a record if Liverpool strive to win the quadruple and become the first premier league team ever to do so in history.

Rio Ferdinand specifically believes that there are four key reasons why Jurgen Klopp’s current Liverpool side are the very best he has ever seen.

The Reds have edge closer to achieving the historic quadruple this season after defeating Villareal 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA champions League semi-final encounter.

Daniel James was never Man Utd standard – Ferdinand

Daniel James was never “Manchester United standard” says former Red Devils defender, Rio Ferdinand.

United sold the winger for £25 million($35m) to Leeds on a transfer deadline day.

Ferdinand, who spent time with Leeds and Manchester United in his playing days, told his FIVE YouTube channel of James’ move to West Yorkshire: “They’ve been on him for ages, they’ve wanted this boy for time.

“Listen, Dan James, I don’t think he’s Man Utd standard, but he’s definitely Premier League standard and the way Leeds play, he’s going to be a problem for a few teams.

“The kid in that team will be getting the ball and getting forward quick, and that suits his game.

“When you have to break down two banks of four like Man Utd that doesn’t suit James’ game, he likes space. Leeds United for Dan James will be a fantastic move for both parties.”

  • FA Cup: Ferdinand slams Ndidi for Chelsea’s goal

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticized Wilfred Ndidi for his poor defending which led to the goal conceded in Leicester City’s 1-0 FA Cup loss to Chelsea on Sunday.

Ferdinand feels the Nigeria international could have done better in the encounter and probably prevented Barkley’s goal.

“The gap between the centre-backs start to develop. When that happens, when that big gap comes, the big job is for Ndidi, who has had great reviews for how he’s played over the years, and rightly so,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Once you see the gap between the centre-backs when the ball’s wide, his job is to drop in, drop in here and be that guard in there. If you keep your eye on Ndidi here and look how many times he looks over his shoulder to see where Barkley is.

“One look, two looks – when he looks there – he has to drop in there and cover the run from Barkley. He knows he can get in behind Ndidi because he’s not looking.

“Jonny Evans, one of my old team-mates, sees this but he’s marking his man – Tammy Abraham – once he sees it he’ll come over to try and cover. But once this happens at this level, it’s too quick, the quality is too good, it’s a great cross and the timing eliminates defenders out of it.

“Barkley sees the space, darts into it, great ball, great finish. Bad defending from Ndidi and the midfield.”

  • Why I rejected Barcelona and Messi – Ferdinand

Why I rejected Barcelona and Messi – Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken about his reasons for rejecting Barcelona.

Ferdinand enjoyed a glittering career with the Red Devils and won every nearly domestic and international club trophy, including multiple Premier League titles.

But he had the chance to join Lionel Messi at Barcelona at one stage of his career.

“It came close there were discussions with my agent,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Barcelona had touched base. I’d spoken to Rijkaard not about going there but he kind of made his feelings known.

“It was after the game in Barcelona we drew 0-0 [in 2008] in the tunnel after the game when I spoke to Rijkaard.

“I always said I wanted to play abroad but the only thing that would stop me was if I was winning and successful on home shores. I was lucky I found a great club at Manchester United it would’ve been almost impossible for me to leave.”

He went on to say: “There was calls for me to go to various clubs. When that was on the table those clubs were in transition and it didn’t make sense to go somewhere it might take two or three years to win things.

“There is an etiquete but you get the gist of what someone is saying I think Frank was a very respectful gentleman. But at the end of the day you know where you’re at after a conversation and then your agent starts to confirm through other channels you understand were you are at at that point.

“But we beat them and went on to become European Champions so why would I leave them to go to another team. At that point Xavi, Iniesta, Messi was just 20 they were just starting to come through. They weren’t the players they were three or four years later. It was a very different landscape at that time but what a club.”

  • Why Liverpool players are scared – Ferdinand

Why Liverpool players are scared – Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has claimed Liverpool players will be ‘scared to get excited’ despite being overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s strikes in each half ensured that the Reds won their 11 consecutive games this season.

It also means that Liverpool went the whole of 2019 without suffering a single defeat in the English top flight.

Second-placed Leicester are now 13 points behind the Reds as they look destined to finally end their 30-year wait for a league title,

Ferdinand, a former England defender, who lifted the Premier League trophy six times with Manchester United, pointed out that the Reds will not want to tempt fate with any comments they may live to regret.

“James Milner is the only one who has won a Premier League title in that dressing room so a lot will be looking at him, but a lot of them will using the manager as that yard stick, and saying we don’t want to get carried away,” he told BT Sports.

“Everyone does look at it and say it’s mundane, but you’re scared. I was scared to get excited. I sense that a little bit with these guys.

“You’re confident but you don’t want to tempt fate, you don’t want to bring yourself any bad luck.

“This club has gone 30 years without winning a league title so it’s all those little things that are building up and the pressure that comes from within the city.”

Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand denied boxing licence

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand says he is “disappointed” after being refused a professional boxing licence.

The 39-year-old, who retired from football in 2015, launched his new career in September.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) said they would not be reviewing his application, Ferdinand said.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves,” he said.

In his statement, published on Facebook, Ferdinand added: “To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take.”

Ferdinand’s move into the ring was being backed by betting company Betfair, as part of the ‘Defender to Contender’ challenge.

Coached by former WBC super-middleweight champion Richie Woodhall, the six-time Premier League champion aimed “to win a belt”.

“Boxing is a physically tough, demanding and dangerous sport. I always gave it my utmost respect and never underestimated how difficult it would be,” he said.

“It’s important to approach everything with success in mind, and to give it your all, but sometimes things work against you.”

He joined Manchester United in July 2002 for around £30 million, breaking the transfer fee record once more.
