  • Senate summons Dambazau over Rivers, Benue massacres

    The Chairman of the Senate committee on Interior, Andy Uba,has condemned the killings in Benue, Rivers and Kaduna states.

    He described the killings as sheer heartlessness and barbaric and urged the relevant security agencies to bring the criminals to book.

    He said the perpetrators were out to destabilise the relative peace being enjoyed across the country.

    In view of the dastardly acts in Kaduna, Rivers and Benue, the Senate Committee on Interior, has summoned Minister of Interior Abdulrahaman Dambazau, to appear before it on the outcome of his visit to Benue State and plans to mitigate further occurrence of these wanton crime.

    Dr Uba commiserated with the families that lost their loved ones in the attacks, and he prayed for God to give them the heart to bear the loss.

  • Two Christians drown in river during baptism

    Two Christian worshippers drowned during a baptism ceremony in the Ugwasi River at Rombo in northern Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region.

    The victims, who are both male farmers and members of the Shalom Church, drowned in the river which the police say was deep with a very high current.

    The Kilimanjaro police commander Hamis Selemani confirmed the deaths saying the pastor and other church members have been detained for interrogation.

    “We are holding the church pastor and other followers for interrogation. We are holding them for further investigation to understand how others died and some managed to escape,” he told local media.

    The police advised that the depth of rivers should be ascertained first before river baptisms are performed to avoid any incident. The religious ceremony is done in rivers mainly by charismatic churches in the country.

    …says their bodies were buried in a shallow grave

    Following the setting up of a police team to investigate the murder of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Mohammed Alkali and his driver in the legislative rerun elections held in Rivers State on Saturday, December 10, a prime suspect, Chukwuemela Ekikeme has reportedly confessed to the crime.

    Recall that Alkali and his driver, Sergeant Peter Uchi, were gruesomely murdered in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local government area of the state.

    Upon the occurrence of the sad event, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, had set up a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murder and the team arrested some of the suspects.‎

    One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man identified as Chukwuemela Ekikeme, was apprehended at about 6:00pm on Saturday.

    Ekiekeme, also known as Prince Okoroma, an indigene of Okposi village, near Omoku, had come out from the creek to visit his girlfriend when luck ran out on him, sahara Reporters revealed.

    Upon his arrest, he confessed to the beheading of the DSP.

    According to him, his (Alkali) head and driver’s body were thrown into a river while the white Mitsubishi pick-up van belonging to the police was parked deep in Uju Forest with the key stuck in the ignition.

    He led police operatives to where the deceased were buried in a shallow grave.

    The patrol vehicle has since been recovered.

    The suspect also confessed that he and nine members of his gang had seven AK-47 rifles, two pump action guns and that they ambushed the police team because they felt they were against their party.

    He listed other gang members as Kachi Nwokocha, who is their sponsor, Bright (Gang leader), Kelvin, Chukwuemela AKA Jungle Justice, John Ahiaikwo, Izu, Okechukwu, Ngozi and Christian.
