Gov Fubara moves to vacate order stopping Rivers allocations

Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Friday prayed the Court of Appeal  to set-aside the judgment that barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from releasing monthly allocations to Rivers State.

The governor, through his counsel Yusuf Ali, SAN, prayed a three-member panel of the appellate court led by Justice Hamma Barka, to vacate the high court order which he said was issued in bad faith.

He urged the appellate court to allow his appeal marked CA/ABJ/CV/1303/2024, and nullify adverse orders that Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court made against the state in the judgment she delivered on Oct. 30.

Fubara’s plea came on a day the Justice Barka-led panel consolidated five other appeals that arose from the said judgment of the high court.

    The appeals were marked as: CA/ABJ/CV/1277/24, CA/ABJ/CV/1196/24, CA/ABJ/CV/1287/24, CA/ABJ/CV/1293/24 and CA/ABJ/CV/1360/2024.

Aside Fubara, other appellants in the matter are the Rivers State Government, the Accountant-General of Rivers State and Zenith Bank Plc.

The lower court had restrained the CBN from further allowing the Rivers government to draw funds from the consolidated revenue account.

The restraining order followed a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/984/24, which was brought before the court by the  Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers  House of Assembly.

Defendants  in the matter are the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Zenith Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF).

Others are  Fubara, the Accountant-General of Rivers; Rivers Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC; Chief Judge of Rivers, Hon. Justice S.C. Amadi; Chairman of RSIEC, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli and the Government of Rivers .

The appellants, through their respective counsel, urged the appellate court to allow their appeal.

Similarly, the The Martin Amaewhule-ledfaction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, through their team of lawyers led by Mr. J. B. Daudu, SAN, asked the court to dismiss the appeals and affirm the high court’s judgment.

After all the parties adopted their briefs of argument on , the panel reserved its judgment till a date that would be communicated to the parties.

The factional members of the Rivers  Assembly loyal to the immediate past governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr  Nyesom Wike, had persuaded the lower court to withhold all federal monthly allocations meant for Rivers state.

They predicated their case on the ground that gov. Fubara refused to comply with an order of court that directed him to represent the 2024 Appropriation Bill of the state, before them.

Gov. Fubara had insisted that the Amaewhule-led group had since ceased to be lawmakers in the state. He alleged that, having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which sponsored their election, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

  • Group tackles Asari Dokubo over crisis in Rivers State

Group tackles Asari Dokubo over crisis in Rivers State

The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is taking sides in the political crises in Rivers State.

Alhaji Asari Dokubo, a former leader of Niger-Delta agitators, had accused Tinubu of supporting the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to destabilise the administration of Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Dokubo also criticised Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, labelling the move a ”total betrayal’’ of the Niger- Delta people.

Reacting, RRM’s Director-General, Johnson Georgewill, in statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, dismissed Dokubo’s remarks as baseless.

He said that Tinubu had been a proponent of peaceful resolution between Wike and Fubara to address the political turmoil in Rivers.

“RRM, on behalf of the people of Rivers, takes exception to the insult and false accusation by Dokubo that President Tinubu is supporting Wike to destabilise Rivers.

“This unwarranted attack on Tinubu aims to discredit a president who is a known democrat and staunch believer in the rule of law.

“We urge the public to disregard Dokubo’s statements, as Tinubu would never support any illegality in Rivers.”

He decried Dokubo’s threats, particularly the statement that ‘‘something will happen’’ if Fubara was removed from office, cautioning against incitement.

Georgewill also discredited the former agitators leader’s claim of spending more than 2 million dollars to support Tinubu’s presidential campaign in 2023.

“RRM assures Nigerians that Dokubo’s threats are empty and hold no place in our constitutional democracy.

“We encourage him to redirect his efforts towards advising his benefactor, whom he did not support in 2023, to abide by the rule of law rather than indulge in sentimental rhetoric.”

Highlighting the importance of stability in Rivers due to its critical role in Nigeria’s economy, Georgewill said there was need to obey the law.

The RRM boss described Dokubo as an opportunist and attention seeker who held no significant political value in the state.

“Rivers state operates under a constitutional democracy; soon, the law will take its full course,” Georgewill said.

  • Wike not responsible for crisis in Rivers – Aide

Wike not responsible for crisis in Rivers – Aide

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to FCT minister Nyesom Wike, has exonerated the minister from the protracted political crisis in oil-rich Rivers.

Olayinka, in a statement in Abuja, blamed the crisis on Gov. Siminalayi Fubara, Wike’s successor.

Olayinka was reacting to a statement attributed to Afenifere Chieftain, Dr Femi Okurounmu, which accused Wike of being “the architect and masterminder of Rivers’ crisis”.

Okurounmu had argued that even if Fubara was his godson, Wike should realise that a sitting governor with full powers wouldn’t be a surrogate to anyone.

But Olayinka, in the statement, said that Wike had never asked Fubara to be his surrogate. Wike, he added, has never asked Fubara not to function as the Governor of Rivers.

He advised Okurounmu, as an elder, to be honest enough to enquire of the role Wike played in making Fubara governor.

“In Yorubaland, when two children are fighting, what the elders do is to sit them down and listen to all sides of the conflict. Elders don’t just sit in their bedrooms and apportion blame as done by Okurounmu.

“Was it Wike that went to the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex and set it on fire, to prevent duly elected lawmakers from carrying out their duties?

“Is it Wike that has been illegally using three members, out of the 32 in the State House of Assembly, to carry out legislative business in Rivers State, including passing the State Budget?

“These three members have screened and confirmed commissioners when the constitution says that a budget can only be passed by two-third of the Assembly members. Was Wike responsible for that?”

He accused Fubara of ignoring court judgments meant to restore order to Rivers.

The media aide particularly recalled a Court of Appeal judgment on Oct. 10 affirming a lower court’s decision nullifying the Rivers State’s 2024 budget signed into law and currently being used by Fubara.

“Did the governor obey the judgment? Is it not shocking that Okurounmu has chosen to ignore the danger Fubara’s deliberate disregard for the rule of law is posing to democracy and peace in Nigeria?,” he queried.

The media aide also expressed dismay over Okurounmu’s comments accusing President Bola Tinubu of being laid-back on the Rivers political crisis.

“What exactly was Tinubu expected to have done? Overrule the various judicial pronouncements and support Fubara’s open disregard for the rule of law?,” he asked.

He advised Okurounmu to avoid getting involved in matters capable of ridiculing his status as an elder statesman, “especially matters on which he would not speak objectively”.

He wondered why Okurounmu, a former Senator, could opt to play the ostrich in view of the avalanche of disobedience to court judgments by Fubara.

According to him, such an affront on the judiciary is endangering democracy and peace.

Recall that a Federal High Court in Abuja had, on Oct. 30, barred the Central Bank of Nigeria from disbursing monthly allocations to the Rivers government.

In her ruling, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik cited alleged constitutional violations by Fubara, and described his presentation of the 2024 budget to a four-member House of Assembly as “a breach on constitutional protocol”.

On his part, Fubara, on Nov. 4, blamed the current political crisis in the state on the quest to control the state’s resources, and vowed to protect everything that belong to Rivers.

Rivers allocation: INC sues for calm over court judgment

The President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Benjamin Okaba, has urged his kinsmen to remain calm over the judgment which ordered that  the Central Bank of Nigeria  (CBN) to cease all monthly financial allocations to the Rivers.

Okaba gave the advice at the 10th Anniversary of the Ijaw Women Connect (IWC) held in Warri. He said that the high court judgment in Rivers would not stand the test of time. The Ijaw leader also urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the situation in Rivers.

“In the light of the high court judgment stopping or denying statutory allocations to Rivers, INC considers it unconstitutional,” he said.

Okaba commended the IWC for their support in the struggle to liberate the Ijaw nation and urged them to keep it up. He also appreciated the group’s achievements in empowerment, advocacy, mobilisation and others the region and urged them to sustain it.

In her remark, Dr Vivian Elenwo, President of the IWC said that the body was formed to speak with a strong voice. Elenwo added that the group was established to encourage the Ijaw women in the participation on socio-political and economic issues amongst others.

She paid glowing tributes to the founder and pioneer of IWC, Mrs Rosemary John-Oduone for her foresight in midwifing the group to what it is now.

“We want to appreciate the founder and pioneer president, Mrs John-Oduone for her unwavering dedication, leadership and foresight to lay the foundation for the success of this organisation,” Elenwo said.

She recounted the successes of the body in the area of empowerment, advocacy and mobilisation of Ijaw women across the country. Elenwo, however, urged members to always unite and support their leaders.

Recall on Oct. 30, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the CBN to cease all monthly financial allocations to the Rivers State government.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who delivered the judgment, cited “constitutional somersault” and “aberration” in how Gov. Siminalayi Fubara has been handling the state’s budget since January.

Justice Abdulmalik’s decision follows Rivers State Governor Fubara’s recent presentation of the 2024 budget to the state’s legislature.

The judge highlighted that only four members were present in the Rivers House of Assembly when Fubara presented the budget, which she called a “flagrant affront” to constitutional requirements.

This setup, the court held, is a gross violation of the constitutional principles enshrined in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.

Furthermore, Justice Abdulmalik condemned Fubara’s disbursement and receipt of monthly allocations, saying that these actions have “grossly violated the Constitution” that the governor swore to uphold.

Consequently, the court issued a restraining order not only to the Central Bank of Nigeria but also to the Accountant General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank.

  • Rivers political crisis for control of State resources – Gov Fubara

Rivers political crisis for control of State resources – Gov Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed that the current political crisis rocking the State is for the sole control of the state resources.

This is as he has assured Rivers people that he will continue to utilize the state resources judiciously for the betterment and overall interest of the people.

Governor Fubara made the revelation while addressing the congregation of Omega Power Ministries (OPM) Worldwide during the 51st Birthday of the General Overseer, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, and the 18th Anniversary Celebration of the church at the Headquarters, Mbodo, Aluu near Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The Governor, however, sued for continuous prayers from the church in order for his administration to remain focused with a view to achieving the purpose of governance in the State.

He said, “There is a reason for this crisis, and that reason is the control of the resources of Rivers State. Rivers State resources belong to you, and we will make sure that the resources are applied judiciously for the betterment of Rivers State.

“What you owe us is just one thing: Continue to pray for us. Let us not lose focus because we know the devil is always at war to derail people in governance. Continue to pray for us because what is most important is the interest of the people here, and I believe that with your prayers, we will not lose focus and the purpose of governance will be achieved in Rivers State”, he noted.

Governor Fubara lauded the General Overseer of OPM Worldwide, Apostle Chinyere for his philanthropic works and contributions to humanity.

The Governor, who noted the decay of public amenities met on assumption of office, commended the General Overseer of OPM Worldwide for the various educational programmes in the ministry aimed at providing children the requisite vocational and technical knowledge needed for future employment.

He said, “I want to commend you for what you are doing. Life is not about taking. What is important in life is giving, and anybody who believes that it is only taking, the person won’t go far in life.

“For all you are doing for humanity, God will continue to strengthen you. You don’t know what you are doing, but those of us who are outside understand your contributions to humanity.

“Look at what you just showed me here. How many of our schools are still functioning to provide that level of training? There are no longer there! We met a dead system which we are trying to revive. But you are doing it as a private person. Why won’t God bless you?”

The Governor further thanked Apostle Chinyere and the congregation for the support to his administration, particularly the prayers, which he noted, have kept the government alive, in spite of all the challenges, urging them to continue to pray for the progress of Rivers State and defense of humanity.

He also donated the sum of N200million to the church to support its going infrastructure development projects.

“Let me say congratulations to this church because the GO “Power” will not succeed without the support of you. So, I want to thank you for supporting Power.

“I am happy to be here, especially to celebrate this birthday with him. He has been a very strong supporter of our cause. Right from the time we started this journey, he has kept faith with me in prayers.

“I strongly believe his prayer and the prayers of the church are one of the reasons that while in the face of all our troubles, we are still standing. There is nothing God cannot do. So, I know that with your continuous prayers, we will overcome this present challenge.

“I am aware that there is a building for your TV station, and one of the dreams for that place is when you finish it, guests will be staying there when they come for programmes. Let me, on behalf of the government and everyone of you here, and the good people of Rivers State, donate the sum of N200million to support the project.

“Power has injected my own power to you. So, I need more power, more power for the progress of Rivers State, more power for the defense of humanity in Rivers State. God will bless you people for your prayers, and I assure you, we will not fail you,” the Governor said.

The Governor had earlier attended the birthday thanksgiving service of the State Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu, at the Salvation Ministries, GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt.

  • APC Chair proffers solution to political crisis in Rivers

APC Chair proffers solution to political crisis in Rivers

Caretaker Committee Chairman of APC in Rivers, Chief Tony Okocha, says unless Gov. Siminalayi Fubara abides by the law, the political crisis in the state will persist.

Okocha said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja while reacting to the recent court ruling on the state with regards to the disbursement of local government allocations.

An Abuja Federal High Court had, on Wednesday, retrained the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from further releasing local government allocations from the Federation Account to the state.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, in her ruling, held that the presentation of the 2024 budget by Fubara before a four-member Rivers House of Assembly was an affront to constitutional provisions.

She described Fubara’s receipt and disbursement of monthly allocations since January 2024 as nothing short of a constitutional aberration that must not be allowed.

The judge further held that Fubara’s action in implementing an unlawful budget stood as a gross violation of the 1999 Constitution he swore to protect.

Okocha, in his reaction, said blackmailing President Bola Tinubu and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over the court ruling would not solve the political crisis in the state.

He described Fubara as Wike’s political investment who was a mere civil servant before he was lifted from a state of relative political obscurity to political crescendo by the FCT minister.

Okocha further stated that the governor was brought to politics and limelight by Wike.

“Wike is not, in any way, suffocating Fubara as is being alleged. Blackmailing President Tinubu and Wike psychologically over the recent court ruling will not help the case in Rivers because the law has to be followed.

“We stand with and by the court, and not with any strong man’s morality. It is not right for anyone to start proclaiming self-righteousness.

“Wike is innocent in the political crisis in Rivers and should, therefore, not be dragged into it,” Okocha said.

He said the only way to bring peace to the state was for Fubara to follow the law and abide by the court ruling, adding that “the law does not recognise sentiments but facts as presented.

“Wike brought Fubara to where he is today. He lifted him from obscurity to political crescendo. Nobody is suffocating anybody. The fight in Rivers state is between Fubara and Fubara,” he said.

The APC chairman added that the political crisis would have long ended if Fubara had obeyed Tinubu’s intervention in the first place.

According to him, Fubara has been running the state without an approved budget, which is against the law. He said it was unfortunate that those playing up unnecessary sentiments and backing the governor failed to see the illegality going on under his administration.

The way out of the political crisis, according to him, is for the governor to obey the law of the land, including the law regarding the state budget.

“We use this opportunity to speak against attempts to disparage innocent persons, namely: Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister. In all the cases in court, they are about 32, he is not a party to any of them.

“If the governor had obeyed Justice Omotoso’s judgment; if he had listened to the counsel of President Tinubu; if he had listened to the Court of Appeal recently, all of these would have disappeared,” Okocha stated.

On the recent attempt by some stakeholders and elders in the Niger Delta zone to reconcile the gladiators in Rivers crisis, Okocha said such a move was too late.

He added that there was no point crying over spilt milk, wondering where those elders were when the political crisis started.

“If you ask me, the only other hurdle to escape is the Supreme Court. What are the elders coming to do at this late hour, if they actually would want to come?

“They are the same people who told the governor that he is a know-all and do-all; they encouraged him to believe that his head was bigger than his pillow.

“They told him his powers are elastic and the governor agreed to that,” he said.

Okocha added that most of the elders had disappeared into thin air after lining their pockets while the governor was now on the hot seat.

  • Rivers Assembly asks INEC to conduct bye election to fill vacant seats

Rivers Assembly asks INEC to conduct bye election to fill vacant seats

The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye election to fill the vacant seats in the State House of Assembly.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Speaker of the Rivers State House Of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo made the call during a press conference on Friday.

Oko-Jumbo argued that the impediments restraining INEC from conducting the bye election to fill the 27 vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly have been removed.

The text of the press conference reads: “On behalf of the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, I welcome you all to this press conference.

“Please recall that on the 11th day of December, 2023, in the full view of the whole world, Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after their failed attempt to impeach the Executive Governor of Rivers State, SIR SIMINALAYI FUBARA GSSRS on the 30th day of October, 2023.

“Please also recall that it is the Peoples Democratic Party that sponsored the election of Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others in the 2023 General Election.

“To frustrate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting a bye election to fill the vacated seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule & 26 others filed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023 against INEC & 4 others on the 13th day of December, 2023.

“Subsequently, an order of Interlocutory Injunction was secured, restraining INEC from conducting a bye election to fill the 27 vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“After filing the said suit and securing the order of interlocutory injunction, Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others began to foot drag and did not do anything to diligently prosecute their suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“On Wednesday, the 30th day of October, 2024, Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others, without any reason discontinued Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023 and it was accordingly struck out.

“The only impediment to INEC conducting a bye election to fill the 27 vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly was the order of Interlocutory Injunction restraining INEC from conducting a bye election.

“Now that Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023 has been struck out, the order of interlocutory injunction is also spent.

“Accordingly, as the Rt. Honourable Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly I call on INEC to forthwith conduct a bye election to fill the 27 vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly”.

  • Rivers crisis: How Fubara can resolve stalemate without firing shot – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Rivers crisis: How Fubara can resolve stalemate without firing shot – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s made the world to believe that his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike, is the architect and purveyor of the political crisis in the state. He’s used every opportune moment to drum this narrative for the consumption of a sympathetic public.

Fubara struck a similar cord lately, at the heat of the contentious and bloody October 5, 2024, local government council election that’s resisted and boycotted by the Wike faction of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Appearing on a Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Monday, October 7, Fubara advised Wike to let go of his grip on the Rivers polity, “for the sake of the good people of Rivers State, and the love that you (Wike) have always professed for the state.”

On the alleged breach of a “gentleman’s agreement” he’d entered into with Wike to secure his “anointing and endorsement” as the PDP candidate for the March 18, 2023, governorship, Fubara said he’d kept all “understanding” with Wike, and lounged into his talking point of how he’d repeatedly knelt down for Wike for peace to reign in Rivers.

“There is nothing I have not done on this earth for peace to reign. I can tell you the number of times I have knelt to beg (Wike) that, let’s allow this issue to go. I have done everything,” Fubara said, even as continuously states, “I will not worship any human being but God” – indicating alleged Wike’s demand he (Fubara) should worship him, a charge Wike’s denied.

Fubara says he appreciates the fact that Wike played a pivotal role in his governorship, but that it’s God that used Wike as a vessel to fulfil His purpose, and so, only God deserves his (Fubara’s) worship, and not any human. He echoed this sentiment on May 16, 2024, during the inauguration of Egbeda internal roads, in Emohua local government area of Rivers.

Fubara said: “God can do anything He wants to do when He wants to do it. It is only for us to realise that God will not come down from Heaven but will pass through one man or woman to achieve His purpose. So, for that reason, when we act, we act as humans; human vessels that God has used, and not seeing yourself as God.

“I want to say this clearly, that we appreciate the role our leaders, most especially the immediate past governor (Wike) played. But that is not enough for me to worship a human being. I can’t do that.”

However, on May 11, 2024, in Ogu-Bolo, Rivers State, at a grand reception in honour of Chief George Thompson Sekibo for his 20 years of public service, Wike said he isn’t God, and as such, had never demanded that anybody should worship him. “Nobody can worship man. All of us believe that it is only God we will worship. (But) as politicians, we appreciate people who have helped us,” Wike said.

Asked on the Channels TV’s programme what his message to Wike would be if they met, Fubara said: “I’ll tell him that it has gotten to a point where he needs to let go. We need peace in this state. You don’t necessarily need to win all the fights; at times, you just let go for the sake of the good people of Rivers State and the love that you have always professed for the state.”

Noting that “election periods are over and it’s time for governance,” Fubara urged Wike to give peace a chance. “What I am appealing is: Everyone should sheathe their swords. Even to the Minister, my oga (my boss), there is no need to destroy this state. When it comes to the election period, you can fight and do whatever but now is the time for governance. We need all the support,” Fubara said.

“He (Wike) once ruled this state and the state was an envy of every other state. Another person (Fubara) is there now, (and) what we need is the support. After four years or eight years, who knows? I will also leave and someone else will take over. That should be the spirit. Fubara will leave tomorrow. Who knows who is going to come? It might be through him or another person but we need to secure the state.”

But does Fubara really desire peace in Rivers State? It doesn’t seem so! Otherwise, he should quit the baiting, the insulting, the denigrating, the rhetoric, and the labelling of Wike as “the enemy of Rivers State” – all done by Fubara to curry sympathy and secure the approval of the gaming public. You can’t be talking peace and at the same time be fanning the embers of war!

Fubara can stoop to conquer by embracing genuine reconciliation with Wike. For instance, what stops the governor from telling those beating the drums of war for him that, “Enough is enough, I’m going to make peace with Wike for the sake of Rivers State and its people?”

This shouldn’t be the kind of reconciliation that Fubara mouths regularly: That he’s knelt down a number of times to beg Wike, even as he (Fubara) threatens to deploy the “enormous powers that I have as Governor” to deal with the “enemies” of Rivers. That’s a Machiavellian approach, which “encourages leaders to lie, manipulate and use coercive persuasion to serve their own needs,” that hasn’t worked so far for the Fubara in solving the political problems on ground in Rivers.

Former Rivers APC’s governorship candidate in the 2023 General Election, Tonye Cole, weighing in on the political crisis in the state, has suggested a tell-ourselves-the-truth parley among the four governors that’ve ruled Rivers since 1999: Dr Peter Odili, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Nyesom Wike and Mr Siminalayi Fubara to resolve the stalemate.

Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’ on October 8, Mr Cole said: “His Excellency ex-Governor Peter Odili, who is the father of this political dynamics, must sit at the table. His Excellency Rotimi Amaechi must sit at that table. Then Nyesom Wike, and Siminalayi Fubara must sit at that table.

“The President can superintend this if he really wants peace in Rivers State. And a decision must be made that this is how we are going to be moving forward. Until that is done, as soon as Fubara’s time is about to end, you will see an all-out war.”

This may not work due to the personal and partisan differences among the former governors and the incumbent. For example, Odili aligns with Fubara and alienates Amaechi and Wike; Amaechi’s sours on Odili, Wike and Fubara; Wike’s beef with Odili, Amaechi and Fubara; and Fubara and Wike are on a war path.

In such a scenario, who’ll call for the “sit-at-table” peace meeting? President Bola Tinubu would’ve fitted the bill, but he literally burnt his fingers the last time he attempted a truce between Fubara and Wike. The agreement, witnessed and signed by Odili, Fubara and Wike, among others, collapsed almost immediately it’s hashed out, with Fubara, who initially said the agreement “wasn’t a death sentence,” turning round to lebel it as political and not constitutional.

So, here’s a simple approach that’ll not only put Wike on his back foot, and induce him to return to the basic, but also push him to his wit’s end! Fubara should select some of the elders and leaders of the divide in Rivers, including the former governors, and inform Wike that he’s coming with a delegation on an agreed date, to fully reconcile with him. The ball will then be centrally placed in Wike’s court to either accept or refuse Fubara’s expressed desire for armistice between them.

Fubara’s offer of peace should be widely publicised in the media – different from his claimed behind-the-scences kneeling down to beg Wike – for maximum pressure and effect on Wike, and it’ll be well and good if the overture comes through! If doesn’t – in the event that Wike declines the invitation to reconcile, his current and intended political antics will be exposed as being the real masquerade behind the political turmoil in Rivers State, and Fubara will be vindicated at last.

All told, the “feat” Fubara achieved with the conduct of the local government council election hasn’t guaranteed a win over the war with Wike. Instead, he’s merely won the battle – a pyrrhic victory of some sorts – while the war remains. It’s still a dicey situation in which “a child doesn’t know when sleep takes food from their mouth” – depicting the futility of the  “clever person” attempting to hold on to something that’s slipping away from them.

Fubara strives strenuously to exonerate himself from the crisis he’s helped engineer and sustain for a year now. That Rivers is going through the grinding mill is because of the governor’s failure to use tact and diplomacy in handling and dealing with Wike’s alleged overbearing influence on his government.

Agreed that Wike – amid strong opposition and resistance from even political leaders from Fubara’s homestead – worked on the recommendation of some Rivers leaders, and took Fubara from the civil service to the Government House, for which Fubara should be grateful, and accord Wike the respect he deserves within the ambit of personal relationship and official conduct.

Reciprocally, Wike should give Fubara the space to freely run his government, and not breath down his neck, as doing so portrays him as a “godfather” that exerts maximum loyalty from and punishment on their surrogates. That’s what Wike’s become, and as especially sold by Fubara to the public, which views the governor as the underdog, and backs his duel with Wike in the supremacy contest to control the political structure, power and resources of Rivers State.

But in his quest to crush and humiliate Wike over his appetite for “godfatherism,” Fubara’s committed numerous unforced errors, as he listens and tries to satisfy his supporters, who pressure him to man up and “show Wike that you’re the Governor of Rivers State.” It’s time Fubara ditched their selfish advice, and chart a different course that’ll genuinely ensure peace and security in Rivers!
