    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers united coach, Eguma hopeful of qualification despite losing 3-0 to Club Africain

    The head coach of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma has expressed optimism that his side will will qualify for the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

    Rivers United were walloped 3-0 by Club Africain of Tunisia in their matchday four encounter on Wednesday night.

    The result meant that the Port Harcourt clubside have dropped to third position in Group C following the defeat.

    The result also cast doubt on their chances of scaling through to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

    Eguma is, however, certain they will overcome the defeat and make it to the next round.

    “We are a good team despite our undoing today. On a good day, we gave a very good account of ourselves and I believe that the future is still bright for us.

    “We can go back and correct our mistakes and come out stronger in subsequent matches and before you know it, we will get there. I strongly believe that we will qualify from our group”, he said.

    Rivers United will take on Angola’s Academica do Lobito in their next game in the competition in February, 2024.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United pip Club Africain of Tunisia 1-0 in Uyo

    Nigeria’s only representative in this year’s CAF tournaments, Rivers United secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Club Africain of Tunisia in their  Confederation Cup matchday three clash on Sunday  in Uyo.

    Captain Nyima Nwagua scored the Rivers United only goal inside 40th minute at the Godswill Akpabio stadium.

    It was the Stanley Eguma side’s second win in the group stage of the competition.

    The Port Harcourt club are now the third Nigerian club after BCC Lions (1990) and Enyimba (2008) to defeat Club Africain on the continent.

    Rivers United remain in second position behind Club Africain in Group C.

    Both teams will clash again on matchday four on Wednesday , December 20.

    In the other group game, Dreams FC of Ghana claimed a 3-2 away win at Academica do Lobito.

    CAF CC: Club Africain of Tunisia land in Uyo for Rivers United clash

    Tunisian side, Club Africain arrived Uyo on Friday night ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup clash with Rivers United.

    Rivers United opponent in the   CAF Confederation Cup,  Club Africain of Tunisia have arrived Uyo for their matchday 3 encounter in Uyo.

    The players and their officials departed Tunis on Friday afternoon aboard a chartered aircraft and arrived the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo around 7pm.

    The contingent proceeded to their hotel after sorting out airport formalities.

    Club Africain will look to maintain their unbeaten run in Group C when take on Rivers United at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Sunday.

    The former African champions top the group with six points from two games.

    Rivers United occupy second position in the group with three points from same number of matches.

    The encounter will kick-off at 5pm Nigeria time.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United draw club Africain, Dreams FC of Angola, Academica do Lobito

    Rivers United have been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisian Club Africain, Dreams FC of Angola and Academica do Lobito of Angola  CAF Confederation Cup.

    The draw was held in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday afternoon.

    Rivers United made the quarter-final stage of the competition last season.

    To maintain Nigeria’s continental football coefficient, the Pride of Rivers must get into the knockout round of the competition.

    Rivers won the final-round qualifier 2-0 on aggregate after a goalless first leg in the Ivory Coast, the temporary home of Etoile as they do not have an international-standard stadium.

     

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that  fellow Confederation Cup challengers Bendel Insurance were eliminated on Friday after a 1-0 second-leg loss to two-time title-holders Renaissance Berkane in Morocco.

    United is the only surviving side of four Nigerian club side that participated in this year’s CAF competitions.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United defeat Etoile Filante 2-0, progress to group stage

    Rivers United of Port Harcourt have emerged the only Nigerian side in this year’s CAF competition after beating Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso  2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

    The pride of Rivers are through to the group stage of the CAF Confederation cup after emerging victorious last night in Port Harcourt.

    Both teams played out  a goalless draw in the first leg two weeks ago.

    Stanley Eguma’s side were made to work hard for their victory after missing two spot kicks in the encounter.

    Alex Oyowah finally broke the deadlock a minute from time.

    Oyowah netted the second from another penalty.

    The Port Harcourt club are the only Nigerian club who have reached the mini-league rounds of a continental competition this year after Enyimba, Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance failed to do so.

    Rivers United now await group stage opponent in the CAF Confederation cup billed to start later in the month.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United, Etoile Filante share spoils in Yamoussoukro

    Rivers United’s hopes of securing group stage qualification looks brighter after snatching an away draw in Far away Cote d’ Ivoire.

    The Pride of Rivers  held hosts Etoile Filante to a goalless draw in the first leg match of their second preliminary round fixture.

    Recall that  Rivers United had qualified for the second round after they drew bye in the first preliminary round.

    Etoile Filante on their part reached the second round after they defeated Casa Ziguiqor of Senegal in the first round.

    The game which was played at the Municipal Stadium in Yamoussoukro, near Abidjan ended goalless in spite of the efforts of the two teams to secure a vital victory.

    Rivers United will host the second leg of the fixture at the Adokie Amesiemaka stadium in Port Harcourt in a fortnight.

    There were also some big upsets in the first leg of the second round qualifiers of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.

    Tunisian giants Club Africain were beaten 0-2 away by Ethiopian minnows Bahir Dar Kenema, putting them on the brink of elimination.

    They will need to win the second leg in Tunisia by three clear goals to progress directly without any complications after the setback.

    In Brazzaville, Diables Noirs of Congo earned an impressive 2-1 victory away to Zambian club Muza.

    The Zambians face a tough task in the return leg on Oct. 1 if they are to reach the play-off round.

    Tanzania’s Singida United hold a slender advantage over Ugandan club Future FC after Elvis Rupia’s goal earned them a 1-0 home win.

    Meanwhile, Sudan’s Al Merrikh and Angola’s Academica Lobito played out a goalless draw in Omdurman.

    The biggest winners on Sunday were Libyan club Abu Salem who defeated Kampala Capital City of Uganda 3-1, thanks to a ruthless attacking display.

    The second leg matches take place in two weeks to determine which clubs book their places in the group stage of the Confederation Cup.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United captain makes crucial demand from fans ahead of Etoile Filante clash

    Captain of Rivers united, Nyima Nwagua has called on football loving fans to pray for the team’s victory in their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso on Sunday.

    The Rivers State-based side will clash with the Burkina Faso side in the first-leg encounter at the  Stade Municipal, Yamoussoukro.

    Nwagua said the players are fully ready for the encounter but urged the fans to continue to pray for their victory in Cote d’Ivoire.

    “All we need now is the prayer and support of the fans,” he told Rivers United media. We are fully ready for the game and the prayer will see us through in Cote d’Ivoire. We will try to do our best to deliver,” Nwagua said.

    Rivers United football club have completed the signing of Ivory Coast striker, Bernard Yao Kouass on a permanent deal.

    The striker has arrived  Nigeria to finalise his move to the Pride of Rivers.

    The former ASEC Mimosas star will undergo his medicals before signing his contract.

    Yao Kouassi previously played for the South African club TS Galaxy.

    The combative striker’s arrival will increase the number of foreign players in Rivers United to six.

    Rivers United will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup next season next season.

    They were eliminated by runners up Young Africans of Tanzania at the quarter-final stage last season.

    Naija Super 8: Akwa United progress to semi-final as Rivers united crash out

    Uyo  based club side, Akwa United have reached the semi-final of the Naija Super 8 after defeating Rivers United 1-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena stadium on Monday.

    The result sent Rivers United out of the competition, after losing their opening two matches in Group B.

    Rivers United was the better side for the majority of the first half but failed to fashion a clear scoring opportunity despite enjoying the majority of the possession.

    Lukman Adefemi came close to breaking the deadlock, but could not direct his shot on target from a tight angle.

    The win means Akwa United have qualified for the semi-finals with one game to spare  in the group stage.

    Uche Collins was the hero for Akwa United as his 57th minute strike sealed the win.

    Collins followed up a long pass and slotted it home through the legs of Abiodun Akande in goal for Rivers United.

    Akwa’s next game is against Lobi on Wednesday, July 12.

    According to Fatai Amoo, the coach of Akwa United, he said that their plan before the tournament was to make headway.

    “This victory is a good one for us. The aim was to qualify for the semi-finals. Now it is time to get more from the competition by going for the cup. If you are in the semi-finals, you have the chance to win. Now we have the opportunity to give other players a chance to show what they can do in the last match,” he said.

    However, Lobi and Yobe stars ended their affair goaless in the first game of the day.

    Super 8: Rivers United beat Insurance of Benin to book last spot

    Port Harcourt based side, Rivers United are through to the Naija Super 8 finals after defeating a strong contender, Bendel Insurance 3-2 on Sunday.

    Liberia forward Albert Korvah scored twice for Rivers United in the encounter, while Morice Chukwu added the third.

    Bendel Insurance’s goals came through Dede Emekoyi and Okon Ini-Obong.

    Rivers United joined Remo Stars, Lobi Stars, Yobe Desert Stars, Enyimba, and Katsina United in the Super Eight finals. They will be joined by two wildcard teams in Lagos.

    The competition will be held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, from July 7 to July 16.

    The Naija Super 8 is a pre-season tournament meant to put teams in shape ahead of next season.
