Tinubu mourns victims of Friday’s tanker fire in Rivers

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday in Abuja extended condolences to bereaved families of victims of Friday’s fire in Rivers.

At least five persons died and more than 70 vehicles were burnt on Friday when a fuel-laden tanker was engulfed in an inferno following an accident it had at the Eleme section of the East-West Road.

The fuel tanker collided with a heavy-duty truck of a construction company working on that section of the road roughly 10 kilometres from the Port Harcourt Refinery.

Following the accident, there was an extensive gridlock stretching for more than five kilometres on the road still under reconstruction by the Rivers government.

Tinubu’s spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, stated that the president prayed for speedy recovery of those injured in the accident and commiserated with the government and people of Rivers over the tragedy.

The president directed federal agencies in the state to continue to liaise with the state government to provide the much-needed immediate support for victims of the accident.

Tinubu commended the first responders in Rivers for their bravery and dedication in assisting those affected.

He also expressed confidence that stricter safety regulations for the transportation of petroleum products would be implemented to prevent such tragedies in the future, Ngelale stated.

In a letter to the Secretary of the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, sighted on Wednesday.

Adangor rejected the deployment and resigned from the Rivers Executive Council, with effect from April 24, 2024.

He had, on 14 December, resigned his position as the Attorney-General of the state following the face-off between Governor Sim Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Prof. Adango said he chose to leave the government to preserve his reputation.

He accused Governor Fubara of interfering with his duties as the Attorney General, alleging that the governor had directed him not to defend or oppose suits filed against the Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by individuals sponsored by the state government.

In his words, “The Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

“I wish to state for the record, that I am no longer willing to continue to serve in the administration of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, in any capacity whatsoever.

“It is important to mention that the Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State by directing me not to defend, oppose, or appear in suits insinuated against the Honourable Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by persons admittedly hired and sponsored by the Government of Rivers State,” the statement read in part.

  • Fubara undisputed political, PDP leader in Rivers, says Sekibo

Fubara undisputed political, PDP leader in Rivers, says Sekibo

Former Minister of Transportation, Chief Abiye Sekibo, says that Gov. Siminalayi Fubara is the undisputed political head and  leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers.

Sekibo told NAN on Saturday during a thanksgiving service in Ibaka Town, Okirika, Rivers, commemorating Fubara’s election and Supreme Court victory.

He said that former governor, Peter Odili, was correct in his assertion that Fubara was the political leader of the state.

“The PDP’s by-law and constitution recognises the state governor as the leader of the party in the state.

“Therefore, Gov. Fubara, who is today the governor of Rivers state, holds the political leadership position in the state.

“What our father, Odili said reflects the position of the law and people of the state. There is nobody that can controvert what Odili said,” he said.

Sekibo cautioned against attempts to disrupt the Fubara-led government or incite unrest in the state, urging those contemplating such actions to cease immediately.

“Anyone, who decides to break the law and order in the state because they feel that they own the state must first contend with Rivers people.

“The people of Rivers state are solidly behind Gov. Fubara and that is where all of us stand,” he said.

Mrs Ibim Semenitari, the former Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), expressed the tiredness of Rivers people with ongoing political intrigues in the state.

Semenitari, an ex-Commissioner of Information in Rivers, said the peoples’ endorsement of Fubara was due to his commitment to development across various sectors.

“We are gathered here to thank God for Gov. Fubara’s victory as well as express our gratitude of having a governor who has a peaceful disposition.

“We are tired and don’t want any more crises. We want our state to progress under the leadership of Gov. Fubara that is committed to driving development across the state.

“We are currently witnessing a political tsunami where people organically come out on their own to celebrate and declare their support for the governor,” she said.

Semenitari said that the thanksgiving service were wholly funded by the people and at no expense to the state government, demonstrating their love and support for Fubara.

Speaking, the Commissioner of Information in Rivers, Mr Joe Johnson said that hundreds of thousands of people across the state had attended the thanksgiving rallies.

According to him, the massive turnout was a reflection of the people’s confidence in the governor’s ability to usher in development and alleviate suffering in the state.

“People and doubters are beginning to discover for themselves that Gov. Fubara is the best thing to have happened to people of the state.

“This mammoth crowds, including traditional rulers and clergies participating, symbolises the residents’ trust in the governor to bring an end to years of hardship and oppression in Rivers.

“The overwhelming support shown during these events, in spite Gov. Fubara’s disassociation from funding them, underscores the widespread admiration and endorsement he enjoys,” Johnson said.

“The gunmen trailed him before he alighted from his car, pointed a gun at him and whisked him away along with his vehicle to an unknown destination at about 9p.m.

“We later heard that the kidnappers later contacted his wife and demanded N30 million for his release,” the source said.

“Rogers was returning to his Rumuosi home from Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers, when he was kidnapped.

“I do not understand why the gunmen targeted a journalist that is just doing his job of informing, educating and entertaining the public.

“Journalists are known not to be wealthy, and so, the kidnappers should release him immediately and unhurt,” the source said.

“Just about within weeks of assuming office, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, flagged off the Port Harcourt Ring Road project that will traverse six local governments. It will be completed within 36 months. But I think it will be completed before the time because the progress of the work we have seen is beyond what we were thinking.

“The official main Trans-Kalabari Road will start very soon and will begin from Port Harcourt. A lot of plans have been made for that road, and very soon, you will see contractors on site, and Rivers State will be opened.

“Just yesterday, you heard in the news also that the governor has commenced the construction of the Elele-Egbeda-Omoku Road. That road was initially done with one lane, but now, he is going to dualise it. The government has already awarded the contract.”

The Police Command in Rivers has seized Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), arms and ammunition from suspected cultists in the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, revealed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

She said that the command’s C4i Strike Force and local vigilance group arrested a suspected cultist, Samuel Nwokoma, who led them to where the arms were hidden in Diobu area of Port Harcourt.

“The arrest and seizures mark significant progress in addressing the recent wave of cult-related attacks and killings in Diobu.

“The arrest of Nwokoma, 25, a member of the notorious Blood Star cult group, took place on March 17 around 7 a.m., following credible intelligence.

“Nwokoma has been linked to several cult-related killings within Diobu area of Port Harcourt,” she said.

Iringe-Koko explained that after the arrest, interrogators were able to extract a confession regarding his alleged involvement in two cult-related attacks in the area.

“On March 14 at about 8:30 p.m. the suspect, along with his gang, attacked and fatally shot Ede Sunday, 32, at Nanka street by Lumumba in Diobu.

“Similarly, on March 16, the gang also shot George Johnson, 28, in the chest at Ojoto street by Emenike in the same area.

“Despite receiving immediate medical attention at New Mile One Clinic, Johnson tragically succumbed to his injuries,” she added.

The command spokesperson stated that following his confession, Nwokoma led police operatives to his gang’s hideout at Ogwu Waterside in Diobu.

Upon reaching the hideout, she said the cultists fled through an adjacent river close to the hideout.

“Officers proceeded to search the hideout and recovered three AK-47 rifles, one assault rifle, six AK-47 magazines, one Beretta pistol and 274 rounds of 7.6mm live ammunition.

“Additionally, 105 rounds of 6.55 live ammunition, nine rounds of .9mm ammunition, seven packets of IEDs, one long wire used for detonating explosives and various charms were recovered.

“The recovery of these dangerous weapons and explosives will neutralise an immediate threat to public safety and underscores the command’s dedication to combating violent crimes,” she added.

Iringe-Koko said efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and urged residents to provide useful information that could facilitate their arrest.

Police recover remains of slain Rivers DPO

The Police Command in Rivers has recovered the remains of the former Ahoada Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Bako Angbashim, who was killed by cultists.

Angbashim was reportedly murdered by infamous Iceland cult leader, Gift Okpara, alias 2Baba.

The police later gunned down the criminal mastermind two years after a N100 million bounty was placed on him.

SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

She stated that the recovery took place on March 10 following a well-coordinated joint search operation led by tactical squads and personnel form the Force Intelligence Bureau.

“The operation targeted the camp of the deceased cult leader located inside the forest of Odiemude community in Ahoada.

“Through diligent search efforts, a burial site within the gang’s shrine was discovered, where the remains of Angbashim were located and subsequently exhumed.

“One of the remains exhumed was the deceased skull, which has been taken to the mortuary for scientific examination and genetic testing,” she said.

She said that DNA samples would be compared with those obtained from the late officer’s relatives for identification.
“In addition, we are working to locate and retrieve the remaining dismembered body parts that we suspect have been buried at undisclosed locations within the forest.

“It is important to note that 2Baba, the gang leader responsible for this heinous crime, met his end on Feb. 17 during a planned assault by the Rivers State Police Command.

  • Rivers political crises to end soon – PDP

Rivers political crises to end soon – PDP

Mr Sydney Gbara, State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, said the political crises in the state will soon end.

Gbara told NAN in Port Harcourt on Saturday that majority of Rivers people no longer enjoyed the drama making rounds in the state’s political space.

He said that every reasonable Rivers citizen currently yearned for peace and also wanted Gov. Siminialaye Fubara to be allowed to work and demonstrate his capabilities in the administration of the state.

The party image maker commended the governor for demonstrating self comportment by not allowing room for distractions in the midst of hightened political disagreements.

“The governor even in the midst of pockets of disagreements with his predecessor and some organs of the government, had remained focused, delivering back-to-back life touching policies, programmes and projects for the people.

“His policy is directly touching lives and building capacity.

“We shouldn’t be surprised when we see that people are beginning to have a rethink and throwing-in support for him because as they say, if you can’t beat them, join them,” he said.

He also described as timely, recent resignation and declaration of support by a councillor representing the ward of the former governor and Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike.

The councillor, Mr Achor Nna, had publicly pledged loyalty to Gov. Fubara.

According to him, more of such declarations for the governor is envisaged in coming days, not just from councillors but across political stratas including members of the State House of Assembly.

On conduct of local government elections, Gbara said that the governor was the leader of the party (PDP) in the state.

He noted that whenever the governor deemed necessary, the party would readily make available its machineries for the election.

He, however, said the governor was making plans for local government elections, adding that the party on its part would remain neutral regarding governor’s decisions in that regard.

Attributing ongoing political crises in the state to personal interest, Gbara urged the people especially the youth, to rally round the governor whom he said had demonstrated patriotism and inclusivity in his policies.

  • Rivers APC Chairman accuses Gov. Fubara of reneging on peace deal

Rivers APC Chairman accuses Gov. Fubara of reneging on peace deal

Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Rivers, has accused Gov. Siminialayi Fubara of delaying the implementation of the eight-point resolution toward ending political crisis in the state.

Political tension enveloped the state in October 2023 when 27 lawmakers said to be loyal to Fubara’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike, threatened to impeach the Governor.

The crisis reached a crescendo with the burning of the State House of Assembly Complex on October 30.

Worried by the development, President Bola Tinubu stepped in and negotiated a peace agreement to restore peace.

The APC boss, while reacting to the peace deal in an interview in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said that the delay in implementing the agreement was not good for political peace in Rivers.

Okocha, who represents Rivers in the Governing Board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), said that the continued delay was a disrespect to the President and other political actors.

Delving into the history of the crisis, Okocha said the political quarrel began when the state House of Assembly was burnt, declaring that it was a deliberate attempt by certain persons at high quarters to make it impossible for lawmakers to sit.

“When the matter reached a crescendo and was almost turning into an emergency, several calls were put across to President Tinubu to wade in.

“The President subsequently invited all the stakeholders from both sides and we had a very decent meeting devoid of intimidation, harassment, duress or undue advantage given to anyone.

“During the meeting, Tinubu emphasised the importance of upholding democracy and opted for a diplomatic approach.

“Following the discussions, the President presented an eight-point proclamation document and handed it over to former Rivers governor Peter Odili.

“At every point Odili read each point from the document, Tinubu interjected and asked if we were okay, and everybody echoed ‘yes’.

“After all parties agreed to the resolution, Gov. Fubara, his deputy, Wike, myself, PDP chairman in Rivers, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and Martins Amaewhule, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, all signed the document,” he recalled.

The APC chieftain said that after signing the document, Fubara requested protection for his supporters against victimisation, which the President assured.

He said it was regrettable that the governor had been influenced by a purported elders’ forum to deviate from the agreement he willingly signed before President Tinubu.

Okocha noted that the governor occasionally yielded and, at other times, presented himself as lacking control over both himself and his administration.

“The governor has implemented six resolutions, including withdrawing all cases before the courts, freeing the legislature, paying allowances due to lawmakers, and recognising Amaewhule as Speaker.

“But, he has refused to implement two crucial agreements – the re-presentation of the state budget before the 27 lawmakers and the conduct of local government elections,” he said.

Okocha recalled that the president informed Fubara that no other titles outside those recognised by the constitution would be used for the leadership of local governments.

“Specifically, the President kicked against caretaker committees or sole administrators for the local government councils.

“So, Gov. Fubara cannot, in his wildest imagination, continue to do as he pleases. He cannot continue to run the state without a budget,” Okocha explained.

Okocha stated that the local government chairmen’s tenure would end on June 10, with INEC required to conduct elections 60 days before the incumbents’ tenure expires.

He criticised Fubara’s governance style and highlighted the need for adherence to constitutional processes and agreements to ensure stability and progress.

The chairman threatened legal action to ensure compliance, emphasising the need for peaceful governance and adherence to the law.

He stated that the state was currently “sitting on a keg of gunpowder”.

“So, we will not stand aside and watch him violate the legal and constitutional agreement; we will not allow Fubara to disrespect the office of the president.

“Drafting a chairman or a sole administrator to oversee a local government is an aberration; only elected executives are recognised by law.

“Although, no time frame was given for implementing the resolution, the governor cannot run the state without a budget,” he explained.

Okocha claimed that Gov. Fubara, who was “an unexpected candidate in the PDP primaries, rode to power on Wike’s support”.

“The governor was not a politician but a career civil servant, but Wike sat on the noses of politicians and threw up Fubara who lacked political background.

“Nobody gives power for nothing without negotiating for something; Fubara has reneged on agreements reached in the bedroom,” he said.

Reacting, Rivers’ Commissioner of Information and Communications, Mr Joe Johnson, advised Okocha to focus on his duties at NDDC instead of misleading the public.

He questioned why the APC chieftain was fixated on the two resolutions, especially since the governor had already acted on six out of the eight resolutions agreed upon in December.

“The governor has recalled, and redeployed the commissioners who resigned, back to their positions – that is even more important.

“Gov. Fubara has also paid all the allowances owed to the 27 assembly members.

“If the governor refused to release funds to the lawmakers but went ahead to represent a budget to them, which one, in Okocha’s priority, will be better?”, he asked.

Johnson pointed out that Fubara had implemented over 80 per cent of the agreement, though President Tinubu did not specify a timeline for its fulfilment.

“The resolutions were agreed upon in December and, by February, Gov. Fubara had implemented six out of the eight proclamations.

“The governor is acting on the resolutions step-by-step. Okocha should stop chasing shadows,” he said.
