Graphic photo: Notorious Rivers kidnap kingpin ‘Devil’ gun down

The police in Rivers State have gunned down a notorious kidnap gang leader, Linus Lebari, 35, who goes by the nickname: ‘Devil.’

The killing of Devil came barely a week after the Rivers Police Command’s outfit, ‘Operation Sting’, gunned down “Lucifer,” a notorious kidnapper.

Men of the Bori Police Station, led by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, on Sunday at about 8.16 pm, in a coordinated operation gunned down Devil, also known as ‘Bobby.’

The suspected kidnapper, who hailed from Tekon Sogho in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, and had been on the wanted list of the Police, was trailed to a criminal’s hideout in a forest at Okwale, on the boundary between Rivers and Abia States after a gun duel.

According to DSP Nnamdi Omoni, Rivers State Police Command’s spokesman, “the hoodlums on noticing irregular movements around their camp, started shooting randomly, but in a return fire from the Police, one of them was gunned down, who was later identified to be Linus Lebari from Tekon Sogho, the leader of the kidnapping gang responsible for all the attacks on the Ogoni axis of the East/West Road and whose gang has killed over 30 people in the two Local Government Areas of Khana and Gokana, after collecting ransom.”

Omoni also said during the operation, two police officers sustained gunshot wounds and were currently responding to treatment, while one locally made pistol and some cartridges were recovered.

He assured that efforts were on to arrest other gang members who fled with gunshot wounds.

The Police spokesman further said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Dandaura, had assured the public that the onslaught against arms banditry in the State would not cease until all criminal elements were taken away, while appealing for cooperation from the public.

  • Police arrest two fake soldiers in Rivers

The Police Coedmmand in Rivers says it intercepted and arrested two fake soldiers allegedly involved in a robbery operation within new Port Harcourt GRA on Wednesday.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt.

Omoni said that the Anti Crime Patrol Team of the Abacha Police Station, while on routine patrol intercepted the robbers dressed in Army uniform operating in a Honda Element car with Registration number AKJ 695 DX.

He stated that the two fake soldiers were Chibudo Ugwuala (31) from Abia and Godwin Ekpuno (23) from Akwa-Ibom.

“On interrogation, they could not give satisfactory account of how they came by the car and the military camouflage found on them.

“They had military ranks of Brigadier General and Colonel, which they have been using to intimidate people and commit crimes.

“Further probe revealed that the duo are persons with disabilities, one dumb and the other limping but thrive in criminal activities,” he said.

According to Omoni, the same operatives also arrested one Baredose Taabaa, a 26-year- old man from Khana Local Government Area of Rivers allegedly involved in snatching handsets.

“His criminal gang specialises in snatching handsets from unsuspecting persons along the Ikwerre Road area of Port Harcourt,” he added.

The PRO revealed that Taaba was arrested shortly after he snatched a Samsung Handset from its owner at the Agip Flyover.

“The handset was immediately recovered and the owner identified it to be his.

“All suspects arrested are helping us in our Investigation and will be charged to court as soon as our investigation is completed,” he stated.

  • Rivers acquires Shell’s 45 per cent stake in OML 11

Rivers acquires Shell’s 45 per cent stake in OML 11

Forty-five per cent of Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC’s) interest in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11 in Ejama and other communities in Ogoni have been acquired by the Rivers State Government.

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike announced the acquisition on Monday in a broadcast titled: “We will continue to advance the state’s interest, security and prosperity of all.”

The governor promised that the state would ensure that the field comes on stream before the end of next year.

He said: “I am delighted to inform you that the Rivers State government has fully acquired Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria’s (SPDC’s) 45 per cent interest in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11 situated in Ejama Ebubu Community in Eleme Local Government Area and the adjoining Ogoni and other communities of Rivers State.”

He said the acquisition followed a High Court order, declaring the state as the purchaser of “the right, title and interest” of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Land/Immovable Property.

The order was subsequent upon Suit No. filed by one Chief Agbara Isaac Osaro and five others against SPDC, Shell International Petroleum Company Limited Shell International Exploration and Production BV and Government of Rivers State.

Displaying certified true copy of the order, Wike said: “I directed the Rivers State Ministry of Finance Incorporate to make a bid of USD 150,000,000 ($150 milliom) supported by bank guarantee and cash payment to the Deputy Sheriff in the sum of N1 billion, the later payable to the Judgement Creditors, while the former is escrowed.”

He noted that the acquisition followed last Wednesday’s order by the High Court of Rivers state declaring the state as purchaser of Shell assets sold.

“I have further directed the relevant government agencies to take immediate steps to liaise with any financially capable companies to partner with the Rivers State government to ensure that the said oil field come on stream within 15 months from today (Monday).”

He said the decision was taken with “all sense of responsibility believing that addressing the pains and poverty of our people with resultant security and welfare of the main purpose of governance and nothing less.”

He described the move as profound economic investment with profound and enduring positive implications on peace, security, development and prosperity for the oil-bearing communities in the OML 11, the entire state and Nigerian in general.

He said the state was desirous of restarting oil production so that the Federal Government can start reaping from its 55per cent stake in the field, while the state could also be receiving its 13percent derivation funds.

“In line with our commitment to accelerate development, industrial harmony and security, the Rivers State government will graciously concede some portion of the its four per cent equity interest to all the oil producing communities within OML 11 to enhance mutual ownership participation and sharing in the benefits of these resources,” the governor said.

He traced the problem of the OML 11 to a major oil spill from SPDC’s Trans Niger High Pressure Crude oil Pipeline at Ejama community, which approximately 255 hectares of arable agricultural land, fishing swamps and rivers devastated.

Noting that SPDC admitted the spill was from its pipeline in 1970, he lamented that the Anglo-Dutch oil giant failed to de-pollute the area, leading to several lawsuits, which the company lost, including a fresh cases the commenced in 2011, spanning through four different courts.

He said: “The enforcement cases had been to Owerri, Abuja, Lagos, etc in six different law suits…

“The judgments of the High Court, the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court were registered in the United Kingdom for enforcement against SPDC parent companies domiciled outside Nigeria’s shores.”

As the community commenced enforcement of the judgment, Wike said the state government moved to acquire the assets in order to avert another round of deprivation and pauperisation of the people by external buyers.

“That the present government of Rivers State entrusted in my care through the will of God and those of the peoples of the Rivers State have concluded that it will be in the overall interest of the state, the other federating states and the Federal Government that we as a government, should make a bid for the purchase of the said interest of SPDC now placed on auction by extant Order of the Courts of Law.”

“That rather than standby and watch other persons or group purchase SPDC 45 per cent interest in that OML 11 and further exacerbate the poverty of the people of the State, a responsible and responsive State Government should weigh in and bid for the purchase of SPDC interest already set down for auction.”

He went: “That for the past 25 years, the rich oil potentials of OML 11 have remained untapped following the hanging of the world-renown Ogoni poet and environmental activist, Mr. Ken SaroWiwa and the Ogoni 9 as well as the unfortunate mob lynching and death of four prominent Ogoni citizens, one of whom was the Secretary of Government of the Rivers State and another, a Commissioner under the tenure of Lt. Col. Dauda Musa Komo as Governor of Rivers State.

“That it has become unlikely that for peace and security, the people of Ogoni in the Rivers State will welcome SPDC on their land forming part of OML 11.

“That the Rivers State government has continued to lose 13 per cent derivation fund from the said 55% stake of the Federal Government in that field for nearly 30 years now, which revenue would have transformed the State and its peoples for the better.”

Outlining the circumstances that led to the dispute between the communities and SPDC, the governor said it was due to a major oil spill from SPDC Trans Niger High Pressure Crude Oil Pipeline at Ejama community, which ravaged over 255 hectares of arable land, fishing swamps and rivers.

Makinde said sports remained one of the greatest unifying factors in Nigeria, adding that by developing the Real Madrid Academy, the administration of Gov. Nyesom Wike was promoting national unity.

He commended Wike for his commitment to the development of Rivers.

In his address, Gov. Wike said the unveiling of the Real Madrid Academy was one of the happiest events of his life as it marked the beginning of a new football era.

Wike said that 70 per cent of the students of the Academy would be from Rivers, while other Nigerians would form 30 per cent of the school’s intake.

“The money used to execute this project is from Rivers. Therefore, Rivers money is for Rivers people. Seventy per cent of the students will be indigenes of Rivers, while the remaining 30 percent will be from other states.

“All Rivers indigenes to be trained in the Academy will school here free of charge,’’ he said.

High point of the event included an exhibition match between a selected team and Banham Model Primary School in Port Harcourt, who were winners of Channels Television Kids Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match ended 1-1.

  • N148bn projects: Wike attacks Buhari government for abandoning Rivers

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s led Federal Government for deliberately neglecting Rivers State in the recent release of N148 billion for road projects across the country.

He declared that the action of the Federal Government is the most shameful act of marginalisation in a Federation where Rivers State contributes to the financial sustenance of the country.

The Governor spoke on Wednesday in Port Harcourt before commissioning the New Rivers State Civil Servants Quarters at Amassoma Street as part of his first 100 days for a second term.

He said: “The Federal Government released N148 billion for the construction of roads and it did not consider one Road in Rivers State. Look at the condition of the East West Road.

“Shame on those who say they are working with the current Federal Government, but cannot protect the interest of Rivers State in that Government.

“We are producing oil that finances projects in the country and the Federal Government can release N148 billion for roads and Rivers State was neglected. You are working with the Federal Government and you cannot attract projects to Rivers State. Anyone who is in APC and is from Rivers State, shame on you”.

He said as politicians in APC, they should be able to plead with the Federal Government to site projects in Rivers State to expand their political relevance.

“You are there, you cannot even say for my sake help me and give me one road so I can go home and tell my people this is what I brought to Rivers State.

“What offence has Rivers State committed in this country that this Federal Government cannot for one day remember the State. They have our son who was their Director General. If for nothing, since he was your Director General, help him and do one project for his people.

“Tomorrow you will say Rivers people should vote for you. Which vote. We wont do that. Nobody is a slave. We are not slaves. We cannot be conquered by anybody.”

Wike said that his focus was the development of Rivers State and not the promotion of political parties.

Photo: Fayemi visits Rivers, says no evidence Wike demolished mosque

Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi on Sunday said he could not see any evidence that a building existed on the disputed land in Rainbow Town, Port Harcourt where some persons alleged that the Rivers State Government demolished a mosque.

Speaking with journalists after a joint assessment of the disputed land with Governor Nyesom Wike at Rainbow Town on Sunday evening, Fayemi described the entire controversy as a storm in a tea cup.

He said: “With what I have seen, I cannot see any evidence of any building that has been demolished here.
“If you are somebody who wants a place of worship, you should find a way to oblige them. I know within your capacity, it will be possible to find a place for them.

“From what I have seen here, I think it is a storm in a tea cup. There is nothing to warrant this kind of media hype that has been given to it.”

The NGF Chairman said that his assessment visit was necessitated by a call to Governor Wike after the controversy on the disputed land broke out.

The Ekiti State Governor said that when the controversy started, he placed a call to Wike who pointedly emphasized that no mosque was demolished.

He noted that Wike explained the history of the disputed land, informing that it started during the Amaechi Administration and that the matter was already in court.

“If they cannot have this place that is in contention and they have gone to court and you have respected their right to go to court, if they want to come back and seek a request to have another place, I plead that His Excellency should oblige them.

“You cannot allow people to build on a sewer. Even in my state I will not allow people to build on a sewer . There is no governor that I know that will allow that to happen.

“If they are willing and prepared to have their place of worship elsewhere, that shouldn’t be too much of a request. It is important for us to promote harmony, rather than discord,” Fayemi said.

He said that State Governors must continue to interact on sensitive matters before taking a position.

He said: “All of us should try as much as possible to speak to one another when things like these happens, rather than jump to any conclusion. That’s what brought me hear, so that I can see for myself precisely what has transpired and I want to thank you for granting me the opportunity to visit when I insisted that I want to see the place in contention.”

Responding, Wike thanked Fayemi for exhibiting leadership by visiting the state to see things for himself.

Wike, who noted that the Ekiti State Governor has confirmed that there was no mosque as was wrongly reported, wondered why people politicise everything.

“I want to thank the Chairman of my forum for at least coming to see things for himself. He called me while he was away and I told him, you know that I can’t do something like that and he said okay, when he comes back, he was coming to see me and he has fulfilled that promise. That shows leadership and from what he has seen, there was no Mosque.

“There is no way I will see a mosque and order the Ministry of Urban Development to go and demolish a mosque. Assuming that there is even a mosque and that government doesn’t want it at that location, we will invite them and say look, we don’t want a mosque there, can we find you an alternative place, but there was no mosque. I don’t know why people should make politics out of the issue. It’s not important.”
