  • Buhari reacts to latest killings in Kaduna, resurgence of cultism in Rivers

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned recent violence in Kaduna state, which led to the death of 20 members of Adara community.

A statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Tuesday, noted that the unfortunate deaths were result of latest incident between the Adara and Fulani peoples in the state.

The two communities have a long history of mistrust between themselves,” he noted.

Buhari, therefore, appealed for peace and decried on-going culture of ‘an eye for an eye’ that has fuelled a number of attacks and reprisal attacks, with the two communities at different times, suffering casualties in Kajuru and Kachia Local Governments Areas (LGAs) of the state.

He also appealed to residents of the state and other Nigerians to refrain from comments in the traditional and social media, especially by people who have little knowledge of the history of the longstanding conflict.

According to him, such comments can fuel further conflict in the area and between the two groups.

Buhari enjoined traditional and religious leaders to be cautious with their comments on the conflict, insisting that whatever words they share publicly should not be inflammatory but be inspired by an interest in peace.

While condoling with those who lost loved ones in the attacks, the president said: “The entire nation grieves with you. The Nigerian army and police are already in the area to ensure that peace and security are restored.”

In response to reports of the resurgence of cultism leading to loss of lives in Rivers, Buhari condemned the cultist killings and ordered for increased community and law enforcement action against its escalation.

He also called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to end the menace.

The President urged quick and effective intervention by community and civic leaders in support of law enforcement efforts, in all such areas bedeviled by cultist attacks and inter-communal violence.

Gunmen invade Rivers communities, kill 12

Gunmen, suspected to be cultists, again struck in three communities of Rivers State on Monday and reportedly killed 12 persons.

While seven persons were allegedly mowed down in the Kaani Babbe community in the Khana Local Government Area of the state; five persons, including a 64-year-old man, were killed in a fresh cult clash in the Rumuohia and Rumuche communities in the Emohua Local Government Area.

TheNewsGuru recalls that eight persons had reportedly lost their lives on Sunday when suspected cult members invaded the Mgbuodohia community, Rumuolumeni in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

There were two versions of the attack on the Kaani Babbe community as a witness pointed out that it was not a cult clash, while another source insisted that cult members invaded the area.

Foundation Onuekwa , Bright Oteh and Junior Kayi were said to be among the five victims of the latest cult attack in Emohua.

It was learnt that three persons, who were hit by stray bullets, were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Trouble began when members of a rival group were attacked on their way to a funeral in what appeared to be a reprisal.

But the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, insisted that there was no cult clash in the Rumuohia and Rumuche communities, adding that when a team of policemen was sent to the areas, it was discovered that both communities were peaceful.

“In Rumuohia and Rumuche, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Emohua said no such thing happened. Some policemen were sent there and it was discovered that the two communities were very calm,” Omoni stressed.

Those killed in Kaani Babbe in the Khana Local Government Area by hoodlums clad in black vests were identified as Mgbibari Nyornyaa, Sorlesi Youngman, Dornu Aanu, Bariagra Menebe, Lekia Eleaee, Boy Mgbibari and Sira Mgbibari.

Speaking on the incident, the National Leader of the Ogoni Peoples Conscience, Gani Topba, told Punch that the gunmen attacked residents, who were sleeping in their houses, around 5am on Monday.

Topba urged government at all levels to take the issue of security seriously, adding that those murdered were not members of any cult, but law-abiding citizens.

He said, “The level of killings in Ogoni has been very high and what happened on Monday was not new. The people were sleeping in their homes when the gunmen invaded the area and killed them.

“Government at all levels must know that security is their obligation and they should take it seriously. If they can stop the killings in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, they can also stop the killings in Ogoni. Government should know that Ogoni is part of Nigeria and also needs protection.”

Omoni confirmed the killings in Khana, but expressed dissatisfaction that communities in the area were not willing to give out information.

The PPRO stated that those responsible for the deadly attacks were living in the affected communities, adding that residents deliberately refused to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.

Omoni stated, “The DPO in charge of the affected area in Khana said that it was a cult-related incident. The families of the deceased went away with their corpses without allowing the police to catch a glimpse of the bodies for investigation purposes.

“The communities are not willing to give information and that is our challenge. The boys, who perpetrated this act, live in the communities; the people know them. They (communities) should give us information so that we can fight these common enemies.”

Rivers APC primaries: Supreme Court strikes out Magnus Abe’s case

The Supreme Court on Monday in Abuja struck out an appeal filed by Sen. Magnus Abe, challenging the primary election conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state.

Abe had prayed the court to make a pronouncement on the direct and indirect primary elections conducted by the APC for the nomination of its candidates for the 2019 general elections.

The apex court struck out the appeal on the grounds that the notice of appeal filed by the Senator was defective and not in compliance with the order of the court.

The acting Chief Justice, Ibrahim Muhammad held that the notice of appeal offended section 285 of the 1999 constitution.

Muhammad said amendment cannot be done to the notice of appeal in view of the fact that the 14 days required by the law to file the appeal had expired.

Abe had approached the court asking it to make clarification on which of the two primary elections was authentic in the eyes of the law.

However, the APC through its counsel, Mr Jibrin Okutekpa(SAN) objected to hearing of the appeal arguing that names of persons affected by the suit were not listed on the notice of the appeal.

Okutekpa said this made the appeal incompetent and incurably defective.

The court rejected the plea by Abe’s counsel, Henry Bello that the omission he erroneously made should not be visited on his client.

He added that the notice of appeal could not be refilled because the 14 days allowed by the law had expired.

  • Police arrest suspects over death of 3 in Rivers cult clash

The Police Command in Rivers on Monday said some suspected cultists had been arrested in connection with the death of three persons in Mgbodohia, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesman, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt.

Omoni, however, could not give a specific figure of the arrested suspects.

He said that the three persons were killed on Saturday during a fight for supremacy between two rival cult groups – Iceland and Deybam in the community.

The police spokesman said that preliminary investigation into the clash had shown that the fight resulted from disagreement over who should collect a certain illegal levy in the community.

NAN reports that the illegal fee collected from those buying land in the community is known as “bush entering or marching ground” in the state.

It will be recalled that Gov. Rotimi Ameachi’s administration abolished the levy, making it illegal and punishable on conviction.

According to Omoni, the investigation showed that the two cult groups had the history of clashing over who should collect the illegal levy.

He however said normalcy had returned to the community due to the deployment of police personnel to the area.

The command’s spokesman urged the residents who had fled the community due to the crisis to return home.

“I appeal to the residents of the state to furnished police with meaningful information on the activities of the hoodlums in their areas,’’ he said.

Malami reacts to PDP’s allegations of working with Amaechi to void Rivers poll results

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar-Malami (SAN), has distanced himself from claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that he was working with Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, to void the result of the Rivers State governorship election.

Malami’s spokesman, Salihu Isah, described the claim as ridiculous, and warned that the AGF should not be linked with the local politics in Rivers State.

He said: “I am not aware of any such ridiculous plan. There is nothing like that, to my knowledge. We are in a democracy, and there are institutions with powers to void elections if the need arises. That is not part of the responsibilities of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

So, they should not link him with such ridiculous claims. They should leave the AGF out of the local politics in Rivers State. There are better and more important issues to attract the attention of the minister.”

  • Protests rock Rivers as INEC resumes collation of governorship poll results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed the collation of the governorship election results in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The electoral umpire had postponed the exercise on Tuesday after announcing the results of 15 local government areas.

The collation exercise today commenced amid a protest outside the venue for collation.

At the time of filing this report, agents of the AAC, APDA, YES, and some other parties were protesting over what they claim is an intentional act to shut them out of the collation exercise.

An AAC agent outside the collation centre claimed the agent inside isn’t the rightful agent of his party as he alleges that there’s been a review of the name sent to INEC.

It will also conduct supplementary election where necessary, and in some constituencies not affected by litigation on April 13.
