Lagos govt announce closure of major roads in Lagos(See alternative routes)

The Lagos State Government has released a plan to divert traffic around Osborne Road in Ikoyi, Eti-Osa Local Government, for two days, specifically Friday, Aug. 15, to Sunday, Aug. 17.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

He said that the plan became necessary to minimise the disruption that would occur from connecting the drains along Modupe Alakija Crescent to the drains along the median on Osborne Road.

“In line with efforts to improve the drainage system on Modupe Alakija Crescent and its environs, there is a need to connect the newly constructed drains, via a cross culvert, to the underground channel beneath the median along Osborne Road.

“The construction of this cross culvert will require cutting a section of Osborne Road (before Foreshore Towers).

“The work is scheduled to commence by 10.00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, and end by midnight on Sunday, Aug. 17,” he said.

He noted that a traffic management plan would be implemented over the two days to minimise disruption.

He said that this would involve a counterflow arrangement along Osborne/Alfred Rewane Road, spanning approximately 100 meters from Modupe Alakija Crescent to the Alfred Rewane Road junction.

“Motorists heading to Osborne Road from Alfred Rewane Road will be diverted into a contraflow lane inbound Osborne Road, before reconnecting to their normal lane.

“Motorists inbound on Alfred Rewane Road from Osborne Road will be restricted to one lane to allow the counterflow.

“For alternative routes, motorists from Osborne Road heading towards Alfred Rewane Road should use Oba Adeyemi Oyekan Avenue to connect to Glover Road, Lugard Avenue, or Cameron Road to continue their journey.

“Likewise, motorists heading towards Osborne Road from Alfred Rewane Road should use Glover Road, Lugard Avenue, or Cameron Road to connect Oba Adeyemi Oyekan Avenue before continuing their journeys,” he said.

Osiyemi pointed out that the road would be fully reopened to traffic on Monday, Aug. 18.

He said the Ministry of Transportation, through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), would manage vehicular movements along the corridor to minimise inconveniences.

The Commissioner who was accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, Director Rural roads , Engr Solomon Aghagba and top officials of the Ministry, said the contractor, Obakpor Engineering Limited, was expected to deliver the job within four months and appealed for the support and cooperation of the impacted communities.

Aniagwu said; “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori having seen the challenges our people are going through on account of the totally failed federal road that comes from Agbor up to Amukpe roundabout, has decided that we carry out some reasonable remedial work on the Umutu-Eku road.

“This work in particular starts from Umutu to Eku so that our people can now have another option to navigate through this corridor to their different communities such that commerce and their source of livelihood is not disturbed.

“In doing that we discovered that we also have to deflood this particular corridor and for us to do that it became very necessary for us to construct this fresh road which terminates at the Ethiope River.

“You have just walked through the over 500 meters road, which is a fresh road, where we are also going to take the drain to the Ethiope River.

“We are doing it with asphalt overlay of some places or a total reconstruction of some parts of the road and it means we are going to take away the water otherwise the road will not last and Governor Oborevwori is not interested in doing job that we will come back to do again tomorrow.

“As we are carrying out this construction work, we are also pleading with the Federal Government to take steps to repair and reconstruct the Agbor-Eku Road which is in a very terrible and deplorable state.

He pledged the cooperation of the community towards successful completion of the road project.

“I thank Governor Oborevwori for approving the reconstruction of the road. Apart from the reconstruction I was trying to put up a team to write to the Ministry of Environment because some persons have taken over parts of the road for roadside trading.

“They have built stores on top of drains and it has been an uphill battle between us and them as well as the land owners,” he said.

The monarch also expressed concern over movement of heavy duty vehicles on the road and called for the construction of barriers to prevent them from plying the road.

  • FG to construct flyover on Abuja-Lokoja road to curb flooding

FG to construct flyover on Abuja-Lokoja road to curb flooding

Minister of Works, David Umahi, says the ministry under his watch will construct a flyover as a permanent solution  to end the perennial flooding on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The minister stated this on Tuesday during his tour to inspect ongoing construction works  on the Abuja-Lokoja road a day after his inauguration into office.

The minister alongside the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and some directors in the ministry visited some work sites on the road.

According to the minister, the Abuja-Lokoja road is a major gateway that links  the  southwest, south-south and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the northern parts of the country.

He  said priority should, therefore, be given to it because of its  critical role to  the socio-economic life of the country.

“We have seen the area that always get flooded  at Koton Karfe section and the the only solution to it is to do a flyover on it to fly above the flood level.

“That will really work because it is  about 1.6 kilometres which will take  five flyovers, you know, multiply by two.

“So we are  going to be making a proposal and submit to Mr. president to give us his nod because we are looking for permanent solutions to our problems,” he said.

The minister, however, urged the contractors  handling the road project to use concrete , adding  that there would be  a review and redesign of the road contracts.

He promised to deliver concrete roads across the country, saying they were more durable and could  last up to 50 years and were also maintenance free.

In  his remarks, the Kogi governor commended the minister for choosing to visit the state as his first field assignment and pledged to give all necessary support to the minister and the contractors handling the road.

Bello noted that construction of roads and provision of other critical infrastructure by President Bola Tinubu’s administration will serve the people better than palliatives.

He, therefore,  commended President Tinubu for appointing Umahi as Minister of Works, adding that ”the minister is a field man and will deliver the Renewed Hope project of this Administration.

“For Mr Presidents to deploy the Honourable Minister for walks in a day after swearing in to come and look into this particular problem is commendable I think we can ask for more.

“The road is going to be designed in such a way that no matter the flooding that will ever come, our road will stand the test of time, and I thank you sir”, he said.

  • Why Niger Republic named road after President Buhari – Presidency

Why Niger Republic named road after President Buhari – Presidency

The presidency on Thursday said the naming of a road after President Muhammadu Buhari in Niger Republic was an indication of the tremendous respect which Nigeria’s neighbours have towards him.

Senior Special Assistant on media and Publicity to the President, Malam Garba Shehu disclosed this in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, shortly after Buhari inaugurated a major road named after him.

Shehu said President of Niger Republic, Mohammed Bazoun, accompanied by the Mayor of Niamey and other officials, took Buhari on a tour of the 3.8 kilometer boulevard inaugurated in line with the country’s constitutional provisions.

The presidential aide quoted Buhari as expressing satisfaction with the existing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and its neigbours.

Buhari expressed the belief that such ties had helped tremendously, especially in the areas of tackling border insecurity, illegal arms import, and smuggling.

Shehu said Buhari had on assumption of office in 2015, opened up strong dialogue with neighbouring Niger, Benin, Chad, and Cameroon, an approach, which had resulted in positive diplomatic ties of mutual interest to both countries.

”President Buhari has strong respect for our neigbours, and he understands the essence of good neigbourliness.

”Before this administration, some of these countries complained that they were not even being talked to by Nigerian leadership. We have opened up dialogue with them and it is paying off.

”We are partnering with them on essential matters, especially on security, tackling smuggling, and importation of illegal weapons, so the partnership is complete,” Shehu added.

The presidential aide believed that  Bubari would be leaving behind on May 29, 2023, a solid relationship, built on a solid rock with Nigeria’s neighbours and expected to be built upon by his successor.

The Nigerian leader is in Niamey to join other leaders in the continent for the African Union (AU) summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification.
