    Irate youths burn three suspected robbers in Imo

    Three suspected armed robbers have been burnt to death in Owerre Ebeiri in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State after they were caught robbing traders in the market.

    The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, confirmed this to newsmen in Owerri on Sunday.

    Also, the suspects were alleged to be members of the gang of armed robbers robbing commuters plying on Owerri/Orlu road in the State.

    However, the CP has warned members of the public to desist from taking laws into their hands whenever they arrest criminal suspects, saying that they should always hand them over to the Police for lawful prosecution.

    Yaro said in order to stop what he called jungle justice from happening in the future that his command has inaugurated investigating team from the State Criminal Investigation Department on the burning of criminal suspects in Orlu.

    The Police Chief said: “On 24/7/2021 at about 06:30 hours, the inhabitants of Owerre Ebeiri in Orlu caught in the act, three armed robbers while robbing some traders yet to be identified.

    “It is believed that they are the ones that have been terrorising the community using an unmarked motorcycle to rob innocent people, especially traders along Owerri Orlu Road, Imo State.

    “The robbers were beaten, tied and set ablaze before the Police Patrol Team arrived at the scene. Efforts made to arrest the perpetrators proved abortive as they all ran away on sighting the Police Patrol Team.”

    “The Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, FDC, while condemning the barbaric act, advised members of the public and communities alike to always hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and prosecution instead of taking the laws into their hands.

    “He then, set up an investigating team from the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command to investigate the cause and possible ways to prevent in future mob actions in the State,” CP said.

    The Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s convoy on Monday arrested a gang of suspected criminals, who specialised in harassing motorists and road users in traffic.

    This was made known in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Akosile.

    The statement reads, ”The gang of suspected criminals met their waterloo Monday while attempting to unleash terror on a motorist around Ojota in-bound Alausa.

    “Help, however, came for the motorist as Governor Sanwo-Olu’s convoy approached the scene to rescue him from the three machete-wielding criminals who were at the time, trying to drag him out of his vehicle.

    “The security personnel attached to the governor swooped on the suspects, retrieved the weapons from them and arrested the three of them.

    “Sanwo-Olu reiterated his stance that Lagos would be no hiding place to criminal acts.

    “Governor Sanwo-Olu stated after his security personnel arrested the three machete-wielding criminals that the exercise was a warning signal to other criminal elements and prospective traffic robbers in Lagos that there is no hiding place for criminality in Lagos State,” the statement added.

    Robbers invade Enugu supermarket, cart away bags of rice, semolina, cooking gas, cartoons of noodles

    Gun wielding bandits have robbed a popular supermarket, Uzorbest Super-market Limited, at Onu Asata Junction of Enugu metropolis carting away goods worth over N1 million.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the robbers carted away 18 bags of 50kg foreign and local rice, 10 bags of 10kg rice; 30 cartons of noodles and five bags of 20kg semolina.

    The armed bandits also took away four giant cooking gas cylinder from a neighouring shop to the Supermarket.

    A correspondent of NAN, who visited the Uzorbest Super-market Limited on Tuesday, gathered that the bandits arrived the Supermarket in three Hilux jeeps in commando style at about 6 p.m. on Monday.

    The super-market attendance, Mr Sunday Ngwoke, told NAN that the bandits numbering about 15 were wearing black face masks and one of them kept shouting “load these bags quickly’’.

    “At first I thought they were government official that came to check for standard of the products.

    “I struggled to restrict one of them not taking the first bag of rice but when I saw the big gun one of them was holding I restricted myself.

    “They parked the whole items I mentioned to you earlier and loaded it into the three Hilux jeeps as been commanded by one of them.

    “Before they left, they started shooting sporadically into the air and scared everybody away.

    “We thank God no one was hurt throughout the incident and they did not take a kobo from the supermarket just the food stuffs and the four giant cooking gas cylinders of our neighbor,’’ he said.

    When NAN contacted the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, said that the Command was yet to get a brief of the incident from the Divisional Police Officer at Ogui Division.

    “The Command will establish contact with the DPO in the area and get full details of the incident.

    “I am assuring you and the members of the public that the Command will issue an official statement on the incident after being briefed,’’ he said.

    Armed robbers attack bank in Ekiti, kill police officer

    Armed robbers have attacked a commercial bank in Otun Ekiti in Moba local government area.

    Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Sunday Abutu confirmed that a police officer was killed in the robbery attack which took place on Thursday at about five in the evening.

    Abutu explained that the group of armed men stormed the Otun bank and initially succeeded in breaking the bank security door before their mission was thwarted by the swift arrival of a combined team of police, military, and local security outfits.

    He said an attempt to escape by the criminal elements triggered a shoot out which claimed the life of the officer while the robbers had to desperately escape via some routes on foot.

    The police spokesman assured that perpetrators of the crime will be tracked and arrested, calling on Ekiti residents not to panic.

    How robbers killed four officers, three residents in failed Osun bank attacks – Police

    The Osun State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the attempted bank robbery by some armed gangs in two towns in the state.

    According to the police, the daredevil robbers killed seven persons comprising security operatives and innocent locals.

    The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the gunmen stormed the towns in an attempt to attack the banks there.

    They were said to have stormed the area in about five vehicles and attack the police station in Ikire, as well as an armoured vehicle at Ikoyi-Osun.

    “Gentlemen of the press, it is true that there was attempted bank robbery in Ikire/Apomu today, Wednesday 2nd June 2021 at about 1810hours (6.10 pm),” the Police Public Relations in Osun, Opalola Olawoyin, said in a statement hours after the incident.

    She added, “The armed robbers numbering about 35 came in about five vehicles, simultaneously attacked Ikire Divisional Police HQ and the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) pinned down at Ikoyi-Osun with several explosive devices and several gun firing in a bid to subdue the capacity of the police while attempting to rob First Bank Ikire and Access Bank Apomu respectively.”

    The command spokesperson confirmed that two police officers and two special constabularies were shot dead by the assailants in the process, and three locals were killed thereafter.

    They included Osho Oluranti – an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Lekan Olalere – an Inspector, as well as Oladeni Olalekan and Oyedeji Muyideen.

    She noted that as soon as the command was notified of the attack, a combined team of operatives of the Prompt Response Unit (PRU), CP’s Surveillance team, IRT, STS, 39 PMF, JTF, as well as local security outfits moved to the scene.

    On their arrival, Opalola said the reinforcement team swiftly engaged the robbers in a fierce gun duel, forcing the assailants to flee.

    “While escaping, they shot sporadically and regrettably, three civilians were shot namely; Toheeb Oyebola, Temilorun Adebiyi, and one other (whose identity is not yet known), all males,” she said.

    The command’s spokesperson stated that the gunmen did not succeed in robbing any of the banks, adding that they fled into the bush with gunshot wounds and abandoned two of the operational vehicles they came with.

    She said the bodies of the slain security personnel and locals have been deposited at a morgue in Apomu and effort was ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

    Some daredevil robbers on Wednesday had a field day attacking commercial banks and police station in Osun State.

    According to reports, the robbery incident which left five persons dead happened at Ikire and Apomu, Irewole and Isokan local government areas of the state.

    It was gathered that the armed robbers had earlier robbed a bank in Apomu town around 5:00 p.m. before proceeding to Ikire where they killed three persons at a commercial bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

    Two other persons were said the have been killed in the community during the sporadic shooting.

    The police spokesperson in the state, Yemisi Opalola, while confirming the incident said she cannot confirm the casualty figure, but the Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, is already at the scene of the incident.

    The police spokesperson was also unable to establish how much the robbers carted away in the separate attacks on commercial banks in the state.

    A resident of Ikire, who witnessed the robbery from a distance said: “The robbers came into the community around 5:55 p.m. and were shooting. I don’t know maybe they were able to enter the bank and cart away money but I am sure that some persons were killed.”

    Garba Shehu deletes tweet on robbers invasion of ‘Aso Rock’

    In the wake of controversies surrounding reports of robbers attempt to burgle the residence of Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari – Malam Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, deleted a tweet on the details of the move to burgle the residence of another Aso Rock official.

    TheNewsGuru reported how Shehu described as a “foolish attempt” to burgle Gambari’s residence, he tweeted on a similar incident on the residence of Abdullahi Maikano, an official at the presidency.

    Earlier, an online platform had reported that both Gambari and Maikano were robbed inside the presidential villa.

    According to the report, which has been trending online, armed robbers invaded Aso Rock and emptied the residences of Gambari and Maikano.

    But Shehu had dismissed the report, commenting only on the attempt on Gambari’s residence, which he said is outside the seat of power.

    “The Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari has confirmed that there “was a foolish attempt” to burgle his residence at 3:00am this morning but it turned out to be unsuccessful.

    “Professor Gambari, whose house is on a street next to the Villa has assured that there is nothing to worry about from the incident,” he had said in a terse statement.

    But moments later, he tweeted on the attempt to burgle the residence of Maikano.

    The presidential spokesman had said the suspect behind the incident was captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), adding that the police were on his trail.

    But surprisingly, he deleted the tweet which had been retweeted over by several persons and posted a fresh one which had no information on the CCTV part.

    It is unclear if Shehu expunged that part because he felt it could hamper investigation which he said was ongoing.

    12 suspected robbers busted in Lagos

    The Lagos State Police Command says 12 suspected traffic robbers have been arrested by its men in different parts of the State.

    A statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi on Thursday said the police operatives attached to Ojo Division of the command, in furtherance of the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, to go after traffic robbers in the state, on 6th April, 2021, arrested three (3) suspected traffic robbers.

    They are: Ammo, 19; Ibrahim Mohammed, 23 and Arinze Victor, 19. They were arrested at Alaba Rago Market, Ojo-Lagos for attacking innocent commuters in Ojo area.

    Adejobi said as a follow-up to police investigation, other suspected receivers to the traffic robbers were arrested on 7th April, 2021.

    They are Bello Jafaru, 20; Nuru Abdullahi, 23; Nafiu Saray, 21 and Bashiru Mohammed, 19,all of Kasuwan-Dare Alaba Rago, Ojo-Lagos.

    “The suspects have confessed to the crime of attacking and dispossessing commuters and innocent Lagosians of their belongings along Ojo-Iba Road,” he said.

    In addition, Adejobi said during the course of investigation, one Lucky Gurube, 19, of no fixed address, was arrested.

    “He confessed to be a pick pocket who has been picking people’s phones along Iyana Iba, Ojo, Lagos.

    “Again, the policemen attached to Ojo Division, on 7th April, 2021, at about 3.30am, in another operation, nabbed a set of suspected traffic robbers, in conjunction with some members of the Alaba Rago Market, Ojo, along Iyana Iba to PPL, Area of Lagos.

    “The suspects are Mathew Christopher, 25, Babangida Umoru, 25, Babangida Abdullahi, 19, all of no fixed address. They were arrested with some weapons like knives, cutlasses, broken bottles and other offensive weapons. They have all confessed to the crime.

    “In the same vein, the operatives attached to Ikeja Division of the command on 5th April, 2021 at about 12:15am, accosted three (3) suspected armed robbers on a motorcycle along Awolowo Way, Ikeja, and arrested one of them while others fled.

    “The suspect, Malik Abdullahi, m, was arrested in possession of one locally-made single barrel gun with assorted charms. He is helping the police to get the fleeing suspects at all cost,” he said.

    Adejobi added that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered that all the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for proper investigation and possible prosecution as the command would leave no stone unturned in getting rid of crimes and criminality in the state.

    He said the police boss however charged officers and men of the command to be more proactive to security issues around their areas of responsibility in the state, as they were expected to exploit available resources within their reach, including robust intelligence, community policing concept and public relations to police their areas.

    Robbers kill 2 commercial motorcyclists in Osun

    The police in Osun on Friday confirmed that two commercial motorcyclists were killed during a foiled robbery at a commercial bank at Okuku in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.

    The spokesman for the police in the state, SP Yemi Opalola, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo that the robbers shot and killed the motorcyclists, thinking they were pursuing them.

    Opalola said the incident happened at 1.00 a.m. on Thursday.

    “When the incident was reported, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olawale Olokode, immediately deployed special units and mobile policemen to Okuku.

    “The commissioner of police later visited the scene of the crime with a team and found out that the robbers abandoned their vehicle and ran into bushes.

    “Two commercial motorcycle operators were killed by the robbers, while they were trying to escape,’’ Opalola said.

    She said that the police team, with the support of vigilante, was combing the bushes to apprehend the robbers.

    “It should be on record that the operation was foiled.

    “The police are still on the trail of the robbers to ensure they are arrested and brought to justice,’’ she said.

    Five arrested for robbing church, kidnapping member during night vigil in Ogun

    A six – member robbery gang has invaded the Christ Apostolic Church at Gudugbe Alagbon area of Wasimi in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, beating worshippers to stupor before dispossessing them of their valuables.

    The robbers, who struck during the vigil of the church, also abducted Mrs. Mojisola Atolagbe, a worshipper before escaping into the forest under the cover of darkness.

    The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed this incident on Sunday, said the incident happened around 1:3Oam on Friday.

    He whoever said five suspects have been arrested in connection with the pre-dawn attack.

    Abimbola, a Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), told The Nation the abducted woman has also been rescued safely.

    He named the suspects as Abubakar Ibrahim,38, Sulaiman Yusuf, 32, Ismail Yusuf 20, Umar Aliu, 26 and Yinusa Musa.

    He said they were arrested after Obisesan Seye, the Shepherd – In – Charge of the church, put a distress call to the Police that his church was under attack by six men armed with dangerous weapons.

    The spokesman explained that policemen attached to the Ewekoro Division stormed the scene, thoroughly combed the forest the robbers had ran into, smoked out five members of the gang and arrested them while the sixth suspect is being hunted.

    According to Abimbola, the victims of the attack have identified the five suspects as their attackers.

    He listed cutlass, two cudgels and assorted charms as items recovered from them, explaining they would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation as directed by the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun.
