Lewandowski breaks Mueller’s 49-year scoring record

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski said it felt like being in a “science fiction film” as he scored his 41st Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday to break Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old German league record for a single campaign.

Lewandowski scored in the 90th minute of Bayern’s 5-2 home win over Augsburg having equalled Mueller’s record of 40, which was set in 1971/72, last weekend.

Lewandowski broke Mueller’s mark with a classic poacher’s effort, rounding the Augsburg goalkeeper to fire home having snapped up the rebound after Leroy Sane’s shot was parried just before the whistle.

“You wait for 90 minutes and then it comes in the last few seconds,” Lewandowski told Sky.

“It was like being in a science fiction film. I’ve lost my voice.

“I saw Leroy shoot for goal, I had to keep believing and luckily it came off.”

Lewandowski claimed the record having had his six previous shots all saved as Bayern were presented with the Bundesliga trophy after the final whistle for the ninth straight season

They finished the season 13 points clear in the table.

“I was a little bit disappointed to have not scored sooner, but sometimes such records have to be fought for,” added Lewandowski.

“I was patient and believed until the end. I thank my team, who share the record with me.”

It was the last game for Bayern head coach Hansi Flick, who will be replaced by Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann next season having won seven titles over the last 18 months.

At the other end of the table, Werder Bremen were relegated on the last day of the season after 40 years in Germany’s top flight.

Cologne’s 1-0 home win over bottom side Schalke meant automatic relegation for Bremen, who were thumped 4-2 at home to Moenchengladbach.

This is Bremen’s first relegation since 1979/80 before coming back up the following season.

Union Berlin qualified for the new Europa Conference League play-offs finishing seventh in the table with a shock 2-1 win over second-placed RB Leipzig.

  • Jurgen Klopp reveals best player he has ever managed

Jurgen Klopp reveals best player he has ever managed

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski is the best player he has ever managed during his spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Over that time he has taken charge of countless world-class players, but one in particular stands out for the German.

When asked during an interview with Bild who was the best player he had worked with as a manager, Klopp did not hesitate in his answer.

“Robert Lewandowski. It actually won’t be fair to say that about any other player except Lewy,” he explained.

“What he has made out of his potential, how he pushed himself to become the player he is today, that’s extraordinary.”

According to the coach, it is not just the Poland international’s innate ability in front of goal that makes him such a fine player, but also his work ethic and determination.

“Lewy took every step he needed to take to be that goal machine. Every one,” he added.

“He has immersed himself in the game, he just knows in every situation what he has to do, where he has to go. Lewy is an absolute machine.”

  • Klopp was a ‘bad teacher’ to me – Lewandowski

Klopp was a ‘bad teacher’ to me – Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski has spoken in glowing terms about his relationship with Jurgen Klopp, saying the now Liverpool boss was the “bad teacher” who propelled him on the path to greatness.

After finding life tough in his teenage years, Lewandowski began to score regularly for Znicz Pruszkow and Lech Poznan, which earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2010.

Lewandowski’s start to life in the Bundesliga was not smooth sailing, as he was played in an unfamiliar No.10 position and found life tough in training under Klopp.

Things came to a head following a Champions League defeat to Marseille in September of 2011.

Lewandowski confronted Klopp and asked his manager what he wanted from him. Despite his German being patchy at that stage, the Poland international picked up on what was required of him and things blossomed to the extent that he won a second Bundesliga title before securing a move to Bayern Munich.

Revealing how his relationship with Klopp developed to the Players’ Tribune, Lewandowski said: “Jurgen was not only a father figure to me. As a coach, he was like the “bad” teacher. And I mean that in the best sense of the word.

“Let me explain. Think back to you when you were in school. Which teacher do you remember the most? Not the one who made life easy for you and never expected anything from you. No, no, no. You remember the bad teacher, the one who was strict with you. The one who put pressure on you and did everything to get the best out of you. That’s the teacher who made you better, right? And Jurgen was like that.

“He was not content to let you be a B student, you know? Jurgen wanted A+ students. He didn’t want it for him. He wanted it for you.

“He taught me so much. When I arrived at Dortmund, I wanted to do everything quickly: strong pass, one touch only. Jurgen showed me to calm down – to take two touches if necessary.

“It was totally against my nature, but soon I was scoring more goals.

“When I had that down, he challenged me to speed it up again. One touch. BANG. Goal. He slowed me down to speed me up. It sounds simple, but it was genius, really.”

BREAKING: Lewandowski named best men’s player at FIFA awards

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski won the best men’s player at the Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich, beating last year’s winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the top prize.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski won the best men’s player at the Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich, beating last year’s winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the top prize.

The Poland striker scored 55 goals in just 47 games last season as he helped German giants Bayern to a treble.

Lewandowski, 32, finished as the top scorer in the league, cup and Champions League.

Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze won the best women’s player award.

The winners were decided by nominations from national team captains and head coaches, an online ballot of fans and 200 media representatives.

This is the first time Lewandowski has won the award, with Barcelona forward Messi or Juventus’ Ronaldo usually triumphing.

This season, Lewandowski has picked up from where left off with 16 goals in 14 games for Bayern.

“If you win such an award and share that title with Messi and Ronaldo, that is unbelievable and it means so much to me,” Lewandowski said.

“A long time ago, I remember I was longing for something like this and now I can win such and award. This really means, regardless of where you come form, all that matters is what you put into it.”

  • Lewandowski shoots Bayern Munich to German Cup final

Robert Lewandowski netted a second-half winner as holders Bayern Munich qualified for a third successive German Cup final after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 on Wednesday.

Despite a superb first half, in which they took the lead through Ivan Perisic, Bayern were made to sweat after completely losing their rhythm.

This happened after the break as they allowed their opponents to come back into the match with a goal from Danny Da Costa.

“In the first half, we should have scored more goals.

“In the second half, we did not do it well,’’ Bayern coach, Hansi Flick, said.

“But it was a Cup game and at the end it was a deserved qualification.

“It could have been an easier second half if we had done it better in the first.’’

Bayern will now play Bayer Leverkusen in the final on 4 July.

Leverkusen cruised past fourth tier Saarbruecken 3-0 on Tuesday for the final.

Having all but secured the Bundesliga title and chasing a 20th German Cup crown, the Bavarians were unstoppable in the first half and an unmarked Perisic headed in a Thomas Mueller cross for the lead in the 14th minute.

They should have scored several more with Perisic, Kingsley Coman and Lewandowski repeatedly going close as the visitors were completely outclassed in the first half.

Frankfurt, who beat Bayern in the 2018 final, came out transformed after the break and snatched an equaliser through substitute Da Costa in the 69th.

Yet, Lewandowski scored the winner five minutes later with Bayern’s only real chance in the second half after confusion in the Frankfurt.
