  • Eagles Coach Rohr : We Want To Win 2019 African Cup of Nations

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is aiming to win the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon after extending his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation for two more years.

Three-time champions Nigeria missed out on the 2015 and 2017 edition of the African Cup of Nations, and trail leaders Libya and South Africa by three points in Group E of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

”The verbal agreement was reinforced by an official handshake,” said Rohr to football365.fr.

”We met in Moscow with representatives of the executive committee of the Federation. We agreed on a two-year extension.

”I thank my leaders for this trust. Beyond the World Cup, the goal is AFCON 2019. We want to come back and win.”

The Super Eagles were due to face Seychelles in their next AFCON qualifier in March 2018 but that game has been postponed because of their involvement in the World Cup.

Nigeria first won the African Cup of Nations on home soil in 1980, before triumphing in 1994 and 2013.

  • Super Eagles Coach Rohr Turn Down Question On Return Of Vincent Enyeama

The coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr refused to provide any update on the impending return of out of favour Lille shot stopper Vincent Enyeama to the Super Eagles.

Rohr has openly voiced out his desire to have the 35 year old back in the team, two years after he announced his retirement from the team after a row with former coach Sunday Oliseh, but his lack of action at his club Lille could put the move on hold.

Enyeama’s future at the Ligue 1 side is in doubt after now suspended coach Marcelo Bielsa named him and some other senior players surplus to requirements upon his appointment as coach.

The situation has forced Rohr to say talks about his return should not be the focus now rather, his return to club football should be the worry of all for now.
“You cannot ask this question about Vincent because he is not fit,” Rohr told KweséESPN.

“He is not playing,” Rohr added.

“For the moment, this question, we cannot answer it because he is not playing yet.

“But I hope he will come back and if he is doing well at Lille or another club, I think he will change,” the coach continued.

“I hope he will be back also to continue his career.”

Cameroun will meet better Eagles – Rohr assures Nigerians

Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr on Tuesday said that Cameroun would meet a better and experienced Super Eagles in the World Cup qualifying match by Aug. 28.

Rohr gave the assurance in an interview with the newsmen in Abuja while speaking on way forward for the team.

He said that Cameroun would not find it easy like South Africa because he was going to field the best legs in Super Eagles.

‘’South Africa met an inexperienced and younger Eagles, that is why they won the match.

‘’We did not play with our main team, many of our experienced players were not in the match mainly due to injury, but they will be ready for Cameroun,’’ Rohr said.

The Technical Adviser, who assured Nigerians of victory in the next five matches, sued for total support for the Eagles.

He said that all hands were on deck to ensure that victory was achieved in the Aug. 28 World Cup campaign against Cameroun.

According to him, Nigeria still has chances of qualifying; therefore, there is no cause for alarm or panic.

Rohr expressed confidence in the ability of the Super Eagles to overrun all their opponents in both the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that the Super Eagles were smashed 2-0 by visiting South Africans in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom, on June 10 in AFCON qualifiers.

  • 2019 AFCON Qualifier: Why South Africa defeated Nigeria – Rohr

…says team will perform better against Cameroon

Technical adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has admitted his side lacked the killer instinct and experience, after they were defeated 2-0 by South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

Two second half goals courtesy of Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau, saw Stuart Baxter’s side claim a famous away victory.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Saturday’s game was Bafana Bafana’s first ever win over Nigeria in a competitive match.

Nobody is happy with the result but in some negative result there are some positives,” Rohr said during his post-match interview.

And we have to search for them. The first goal we conceded was a counterattack from the right flank and the second goal was a gift.

My young team played a very good first half. They played well but they didn’t score and in the second half we knew that the experienced team of South Africa could be dangerous and counter us and that was what happened.

We had difficulties to finish the game they made so many efforts. Some of our players were tired to we tried to put in some attacking players to bring in some power in the attack but it was not enough.

We knew they were unbeaten in the last 17 games now 18. I believe that this game we made progress with my young team of an average age of 24 years. The youngest team in Africa. This game they will learn and not repeat the same mistakes.

We controlled the game until the goal they conceded.

You know with a young team where all is good it’s wonderful, when it’s difficult they become nervous and that was the case today.

But I trust in these players because theg played well in the first half.

I don’t want give excuses for the missing players. It’s right we missed some big players to score the goals.

The game against Cameroon will be much better.”

Libya tops Group E with three points, following their 5-1 win over Seychelles. Baxter’s men are in second place on goals difference, while Nigeria is third with no points.

  • I will name Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2019 qualifiers by February – Rohr

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has revealed he will name his squad for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in February.

The draw for the tournament will be held on Thursday in Libreville, Gabon and Nigeria is likely to play their first game of the qualifying series in March.

I will make my list by the end of February,” Rohr said.

This will depend on what the players are doing at their clubs.

Some new players could come like fullback, we have somebody, but it’s too early to speak about that now.”

Rohr also stated that he was willing to give players from the domestic league more chances.

I will watch tomorrow’s Super Cup (between Rangers and FC Ifeanyi Ubah) to see if I could see some players in the league,” he said.

It will be interesting for me to watch this game as I have already watched Ifeanyi Ubah during the Federation Cup final, now I will see the Nigeria champions.”
