I join Roma far better than I was with Inter Milan – Mourinho

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho says he returns to Italian football a better technician than he was ten years ago with Inter Milan.

Mourinho touched down in Rome yesterday to take charge of his Giallorossi squad.

He told the club’s website: “I’m much better now. I’m serious – because I think this is a job where experience means a lot. Experience makes everything look like deja vu because you went through so many experiences since I left Italy.

“I went to Real Madrid which was an incredible experience, where I reached my dream of winning in Italy, England and Spain. Then back to England where my family is based and of course I wanted to come.

“I even have extreme experience of taking a team to a final and not playing the final which is something I thought would never happen in my career and it happened.

“So with so many experiences and learning with the good moments and with the bad moments, I am much more prepared now than I was.”

Granit Xhaka drops another hint over Roma transfer

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has dropped another hint about his future.

The Switzerland captain led his country into the final eight at Euro 2020 on Monday with a dramatic win over France.

Roma continue to be linked with a summer move for Xhaka, who said the Italian capital was beautiful when speaking before the France game.

Xhaka will miss the quarter-final through suspension, but he is still keeping his name in the press.

Asked whether he will soon be conducting post-match interviews in Italian, Xhaka replied, via Goal: “Not yet… it is always interesting to learn a new language.

“Let’s see, everyone knows what Roma represent. Now, I am an Arsenal player, I will speak after the tournament.”

  • What I really think of Memphis Depay – Mourinho

What I really think of Memphis Depay – Mourinho

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he’s a fan of Barcelona signing Memphis Depay.

Mourinho feels Depay joined United too early in his career.

“He is a really good professional. People can look at him and probably think he’s a party boy,” new Roma coach Mourinho told talkSPORT. “I think he got this maturity in Lyon which is sometimes what players need.

“Sometimes they can go too early to the biggest clubs where they are not ready to cope with it. Where they are not ready to understand that in the biggest clubs there are internal competition, that you can not play all the time. That there are fantastic players to fight with you for a position. They can lose a little sense of reality and become a bit childish. Which is what happened.

“So when he decided to go to Lyon it was a great move for him and now he goes to Barcelona with maturity, with a good football age and I believe the Barcelona culture of football will help him also to level up in this important part of his career. But good memories of him and I repeat – he was a good professional.”

Serie A: Why I agreed Roma move – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has explained taking the job with AS Roma.

Mourinho was named new Roma coach barely days after being sacked by Tottenham.

“They really wanted me,” he told GQ Portugal.

“It was almost instantly, me leaving Tottenham in the morning and Roma calling me in the afternoon. They wanted me a lot and were objective.

“Something I had already felt throughout my years in Italy was the Italian passion when it comes to football, specifically around Roma, a club that has won no trophies in 20 years.

“These are new owners, who have a very humble approach in a way that they recognised this was a new chapter in their amazing professional lives, a chapter in which they needed help from someone with a broad experience.

“They were very honest and straightforward, and I immediately felt this passion I have for my work. So I didn’t have to think too much about it, because they really touched me with their approach. I really liked it.”

  • Mourinho on Hazard: Amazing player with awful training

Mourinho on Hazard: Amazing player with awful training

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Real Madrid’s Belgium star Eden Hazard.

Hazard played under Mourinho during the Portuguese’s second spell at Chelsea, winning a Premier League title in 2013/14.

But the pair enjoyed a famously combustible relationship during their time together, with Mourinho once telling a dressing room they were “playing with 10 men” thanks to Hazard’s lack of defensive work.

Coming off the back of his worst season as a professional, Mourinho has rekindled the rivalry, claiming his poor attitude on the training pitch stops him from reaching the game’s pinnacle.

Asked about his former charge, Mourinho told talkSPORT: “An amazing player with awful training.

“He gets on the pitch every morning and he doesn’t work much. You can imagine what he could be if he was a top professional.”

But he said: “There are always rumours as soon as the transfer market opens but I don’t want to talk about my future.

“I am 100 per cent focused here with the national team… what happens afterwards, you will then get to know about it.”

Roma have offered €17m for the midfielder, with Arsenal demanding €20m to sell.

Ronaldo loved Benzema at Real Madrid – Mourinho

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Mourinho worked with Benzema during his time in charge of Real Madrid.

He told The Sun: “The best compliment you can give Karim Benzema is that Cristiano Ronaldo was in love with him at Real Madrid.

“Karim is probably the only number 9 I know who is not selfish in his game. His vision is amazing, the way he enjoys his football is to play with great freedom.

“Karim will bring out the best of (France teammate Kylian) Mbappé, as he did in Madrid with Cristiano.”

“Portugal when I was in Real Madrid. It was a crazy bid for a part-time job.

“It’s the kind of job I think I’ll enjoy later.”

  • Arsenal midfielder proud of Mourinho interest

Arsenal midfielder proud of Mourinho interest

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka says he is proud to have attracted admiring glances from Jose Mourinho amid Roma’s interest in trying to sign him.

The Swiss international has just two years left on his contract and there have been no negotiations with the Gunners over a new deal.

With Roma showing serious interest in him at the behest of Mourinho, Xhaka is flattered and interested in working under the Portuguese coach.

“Of course I read [about the interest]. But now I’m one 100 per cent focused on the national team here,” the 28-year-old told Blick as he prepares to compete at Euro 2020 with Switzerland.

“That’s more important than Arsenal or rumours right now. I have another two years on my contract in London and Arsenal they know what they have in me. When the time comes to talk about a transfer, I’ll be here.”

He added: “To be honest, I didn’t hear what Mourinho has said about me. But that makes you proud. Everyone knows Mourinho, knows what he has achieved. Mourinho knows how to win titles.

“You can now see what work I have done over the past few years.”
