Ex-Roma president clashes with fan over Salah sale

Former Roma president James Pallotta has clashed furiously with a fan online over the sale of Mohamed Salah to Liverpool.

Salah has starred for Liverpool ever since leaving Roma in 2017 for £35m.

One fan online took on Pallotta, suggesting it was all about money, claiming Roma only cared about Financial Fair Play regulations.

He posted to social media: “Replacing Salah with [Patrik] Schick is confirmation of the inability of a company that constantly sells the best players.

“You’re not good enough at turning omelettes, trust me.”

Pallotta replied: “You still show ignorance by ignoring fact that Salah wanted to leave and had one year left [on his contract].

“So sell for 42 [million euros] or get zero?”

The fan’s responded: “How about offering him enough to stay?

“Also, who to believe: the person who was here and handled the transfer specifying ‘we had to sell him for FFP’ and Totti clarifying he did not want to leave or the person who left us on the brink of bankruptcy?”

Pallotta then declared: “It has nothing to do with money. God almighty.

“He wanted to go back to the league that told him he wasn’t good enough.

“By the way. When I bought the team it was in bankruptcy. We bought it from Unicredit.”

The supporter continued: “In order to do what other teams have done, you need to go through sponsorships – sadly, only wealthy ownerships can do that.

“Jimmy simply did not have that wealth but wanted to blame FFP to maintain consensus among the lesser brilliant minds. It really is that simple.”

Having had enough, Pallotta blasted: “You are seriously at the top of the list of f***ing idiots.

“Absolutely in a category of your own.

“I am going to have to think over the weekend how to classify you.”

Serie A: Lazio whip Roma to dominate Derby of Capital

Luis Alberto’s brace followed the opener from his skipper Ciro Immobile as Lazio crushed Roma 3-0 on Friday in the Rome derby which opened the Serie A weekend.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner Immobile put Lazio ahead in the 14th minute after Manuel Lazzari dispossessed a dithering Roger Ibanez and set up the striker’s 12th goal in the current campaign.

Nine minutes later, the fast winger Lazzari had again the better of the Brazilian defender and squared for Luis Alberto’s shot into the far corner.

Lazio remained in control and after the break Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez saved attempts from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Felipe Caicedo and Immobile.

But he stood no chance on Luis Alberto’s drive in the 67th minute.

The Spaniard sealed the Laziali’s victory by firing clinically from outside the penalty box into the right corner.

Pepe Reina, himself a Spaniard keeping goal for Lazio, blocked a late effort from the Giallorossi captain Edin Dzeko with five minutes to go.

“For us it was very important to win,” Luis Alberto said, “because in Serie A we had a glum period. But we have been improving [with wins] in the last three games. We have improved a lot and today we confirmed it.”

Lazio, who qualified to meet holders Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, moved to seventh place in Serie A and are now three points behind the third-placed Giallorossi.

Champions Juventus are fourth, one point behind Roma and with a game in hand, before Sunday’s classic against second-placed Inter Milan.

Leaders AC Milan, now sitting three points clear of Inter, meet Cagliari on Monday.

Totti meets girl who woke from coma after his message

Nineteen-year-old Ilenia Matilli has been in hospital since December, after a car crash which killed her best friend.

In her gradual awakening from a coma, a video message of support from former AS Roma great Francesco Totti played a part.

“Hold on and don’t give up,” the 44-year-old former Roma captain and forward told Ilenia in a video he sent following a request from her parents.

After hearing his voice, Ilenia gave further signs of recovery and wrote on a special blackboard that she wanted to meet her idol.

Totti and Ilenia spent an hour together, the Gemelli hospital said in a statement.

Even though she used to play for the women’s team of Roma’s city rivals Lazio, Ilenia was wearing a Roma T-shirt which Totti signed with a golden marker pen.

“I want to see you out of the hospital soon and get your life back,” Totti was quoted as saying.

Doctor Luca Padua, who leads the neurorehabilitation unit, said listening to music, sounds and looking at images were an important part of Ilenia’s therapy.

“There is still a long way forward, but we are confident,” Padua said.

Former Italy international Totti spent his whole career at Roma, playing over 600 Serie A matches for the club before retiring in 2017.

“Lot of you ask when the two clubs will confirm the deal. I think it could be next week,” he wrote on Twitter.

“As Leverkusen are working to get Patrik Schick from Roma (on loan in Leipzig this season) as replacement. That could happen next week. Understand this the reason for the delay.”

Roma are growing confident of signing Chelsea attacker Pedro.

The Sun says Pedro, who turns 33 in July, will see his deal at Stamford Bridge expire in the summer.

His Chelsea exit has been on the cards for a while and he said in March: “I’m terminating my contract, but right now it’s not the most important thing, nor have I stopped to think about it.”

The Spaniard has played just 18 times this season – with only nine of those in the Premier League – and scored twice.

Roma Legend, Daniele De Rossi Retires From Football

Former AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, after signing a leaving Boca Juniors.

The midfielder says the decision is not due to injury, but a desire to be closer to his family back home in Italy.

“I don’t have any health-related issues, I have the need to be with my daughter. They miss me, and I miss them,” De Rossi said at a news conference.

“I had the pleasure of working with the new board. They tried to convince me to stay but the decision was set. They asked me to think about this for a few days.

“The board offered me their help. But I don’t need help. I need to go back home. I’m not only saying goodbye to a club that’s in my heart, I’m saying goodbye to football, it’s my world.

“I don’t want to get into details. I’ve already explained it well. My oldest daughter was the only one to stay in Italy. She’s living well, she’s not in danger, she just needs her father.

“Here in Argentina we’re very far [away]. If I were elsewhere in Europe, I would be an hour away.”

De Rossi made the high-profile move to Buenos Aires in July and marked his competitive debut with a goal against Almagro in the Copa Argentina the following month.

However, he has been restricted to just five further appearances for the club since, his cause not helped by injuries including a hamstring strain picked up against Boca’s great rivals River Plate in September.

Despite his premature departure, De Rossi insists he has no regrets about the move and will always hold the club dear.

“You guys know how the Boca fanbase is, what La Bombonera is, I’m leaving a piece of my heart here,” he added.

“I will continue to be a part of Boca. Perhaps destiny (will) bring us together once again. I will continue to watch Boca. The people I’ve met here have been magical, I will never forget this experience.

“This decision wasn’t made from one day to the next, this decision was made a while ago.”

Prior to his move to Argentina, De Rossi had spent his entire playing career at boyhood club Roma, where he made 616 appearances for the Serie A outfit over 18 years.

He helped the club to Coppa Italia success in 2007 and 2008, as well as being named Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2009, Goal reports.

The midfielder bade an emotional farewell to Roma at the end of the 2018-19 season following the expiry of his contract, penning an open letter thanking everyone at the club and ‘every Roma fan’ for their support over the years.
