Why I left Arsenal for Roma – Mkhitaryan

AS Roma attacking midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, has explained why he left Arsenal for the Serie A side.

The Armenian completed a deadline day move to Roma, despite having played for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby 24 hours before earlier this month.

Mkhitaryan stated that one of the reasons he left Unai Emery’s side was because he stopped enjoying football at Arsenal.

“Now I am in Rome and I focus on the Serie A. This is not a step backwards as a great football is played here. I wanted to change air and for me, it is an opportunity to be seized,” Mkhitaryan was quoted by Calciomercato.

“I have to enjoy playing football, no matter the place. In England, I no longer felt this pleasure.

“The messages after the two national matches made me happy, but now I have to concentrate on Rome. I will never give up and I will fight to the end. I’m not afraid of pressure, I’m used to having already played with great teams.

“I know that the slightest mistake is criticized while good performance is exalted. If you agree to play soccer you must be ready to face criticism. Series A is a great opportunity, I accepted immediately with enthusiasm. We didn’t even talk about money.”

  • Long-term future could be in Italy, says Smalling

Long-term future could be in Italy, says Smalling

Chris Smalling says he can see his long-term future in Italy if his season-long loan move from Manchester United to Roma is successful.

Smalling has joined the Serie A club until June 2020 after falling out of favour at Old Trafford following the £80m arrival of Harry Maguire.

The defender was officially presented as a Roma player at a press conference on Friday morning and suggested he could look to make the move permanent.

“This is an opportunity that came to me that I was very interested in, and I was very eager to come,” he said.

“It happened very quickly and now I focus on the next game, getting up to speed with training in terms of the manager’s methods and then hopefully have a very good season.

“To be able to have the chance at a big club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy then I can definitely see a longer-term future in Italy.”

  • Roma reshape, signing Diawara from Napoli, Spinazzola from Juve

AS Roma have signed midfielder Amadou Diawara from Napoli for 21 million euros (£19 million) and confirmed that Greek international defender Kostas Manolas has moved in the opposite direction to Napoli for 36 million euros.
The Romans, who last month appointed Paulo Fonseca as their coach, have also done two deals with Juventus, signing defender Leonardo Spinazzola, while Luca Pellegrini joins the Italian champions.
Spinazzola, 26, has agreed to a four-year contract with the club paying 29.5 million euros.
Juventus have paid 22 million euros for defender Pellegrini, who is only 20 years old and spent last season on loan at Cagliari.
Roma Chief Executive Guido Fienga said that the club had been tracking Guinea international Diawara for a while. He is currently playing in the African Cup of Nations.
Fienga also said he had no doubts Italian international Spinazzola would soon prove his worth.
“Leonardo is a young player that has already acquired a lot of valuable experience in Italian football.
I am certain that he will settle in here very quickly and will fit in well with the style our new coach implements,” he said.

  • Ranieri’s problems multiply as AS Roma face Napoli

Ranieri’s problems multiply as AS Roma face Napoli

Claudio Ranieri’s AS Roma homecoming is quickly threatening to turn sour with the veteran coach facing a multitude of problems ahead of Sunday’s match against Napoli.

Ranieri, who was appointed one week after being fired by English Premier League (EPL) side Fulham, appears to have leapt from the frying pan into the fire.

He was in charge for three months at the London side.

Having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Portuguese side FC Porto, which led to the downfall of predecessor Eusebio Di Francesco, things have not gone well since.

Fifth-placed AS Roma have lost ground in the race for the UEFA Champions League places next season.

They are four points adrift of the top four, a place where they must finish at to qualify.

Napoli are second with 60 points, 15 behind runaway leaders Juventus who host Empoli on Saturday.

Rome-born Ranieri, in his second stint in charge of the club where he also began his playing career, has inherited a team plagued by injuries and form problems.

The team also has an infuriating tendency to switch off during matches.

Having beaten Empoli in his first game, Ranieri’s side then lost 2-1 to SPAL, continuing a string of defeats against teams from the lower half of the table.

Ranieri gave a withering assessment of the performance against SPAL.

“We need to be more determined, more of a team and also improve our tactics, because we ran hard, but with no real reasoning and that’s not good enough,” he said.

Italian media reported that tempers flared in the Roma dressing-room at halftime at SPAL with a furious row between strikers Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Dzeko.

The club have not commented on the reports.

Roma go into Sunday’s match with injury problems, something which has been a feature of their season.

El Shaarawy and full back Alessandro Florenzi both left the Italy squad with calf problems during the international break and are unavailable.

Daniele De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Javier Pastore are doubtful.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica, in an article, calculated that Roma’s squad have suffered 40 muscular injuries between them this season.

There are also worries about the form of goalkeeper Robin Olsen after his performance in the 3-3 draw for Sweden against Norway on Tuesday.

There were then suggestions that Ranieri could turn to Antonio Mirante.

Olsen’s long-term future at the club, after some unconvincing displays, is also in doubt.

Meanwhile, forward Diego Perotti denied comments by his father Hugo, a former player, about a possible return to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors.

“My father dropped me in it and I’m angry,” Perotti told a media outlet in Argentina.

“I still have two years of my contract to go and I’m not returning to Argentina at the moment.”

Ranieri warned that the players were playing for their future at the club.

“There’s a plan in place if Roma get into the UEFA Champions League. If we don’t, quite a few of these guys could change clubs,” he said.

“I can’t say if there will be a revolution if Roma don’t qualify for the UEFA Champions League, but if they don’t get the revenue from that competition something will inevitably have to change.”

Roma then went on to support the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, teaming up with the Nigerian FA to help power social media output throughout the tournament.

  • Ranieri gets Roma job, eight days after Fulham sack

Former Leicester and Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has been appointed Roma manager until the end of the season.

Ranieri, 67, was sacked by Fulham eight days ago after winning three of his 17 games in charge.

But the Roma fan – who managed the club between 2009 and 2011 – has been handed a quick return to management, replacing Eusebio di Francesco.

“I’m delighted to be coming back home,” Ranieri said on Friday. “When Roma call you, it’s impossible to say no.”

Di Francesco was sacked on Wednesday after losing 4-3 on aggregate to Porto in the Champions League last 16.

Roma sporting director Monchi also left the club earlier on Friday.

Ranieri took over at Fulham last November after the sacking of Slavisa Jokanovic and beat Southampton 3-2 in his first game, but 11 defeats followed including an FA Cup third-round exit at home to League Two side Oldham.

He left the Cottagers after just 106 days with the club 19th in the Premier League, 10 points from safety with 10 games left.

Serie A: Roma sack Di Francesco as head coach

Roma have sacked head coach Eusebio di Francesco following Champions League last-16 defeat by Porto on Wednesday.

The Italian side lost 4-3 on aggregate after an Alex Telles extra-time penalty in Portugal, having led 2-1 from the first leg.

Roma are fifth in Serie A and lost 3-0 to city rivals Lazio on Saturday.

Di Francesco, 49, took over in June 2017, leading Roma to last year’s Champions League semi-finals, where they were beaten by Liverpool.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I’d like to thank Eusebio for his work and his commitment,” said club president Jim Pallotta.

“Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club’s needs ahead of his own. We all wish him well for the future.”

Former Italy midfielder Di Francesco won the Serie A title with Roma in 2001 before retiring in 2005.

He spent five years in charge of Sassuolo, winning the Serie B title in 2013, until arriving at Roma to replace Luciano Spalletti, who had left to join Inter Milan.

Roma are three points behind Inter in fourth, the last Champions League qualification spot, while Lazio are three points behind in sixth with a game in hand.

  • Under-fire Sarri denies link with Roma job

Under-fire Sarri denies link with Roma job

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said he would not be leaving for Roma, after speculation in the media on Thursday.

The Italian was speaking after the Blues defeated Malmo 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to win 5-1 on aggregate and move into the Europa League last 16.

Sarri has been under pressure recently following a mixed run of results.

Asked if he had been in contact with Roma, the 60-year-old said: “Of course no, I have a contract with Chelsea for next season so it is impossible.”

Chelsea went into Thursday’s game on the back of three defeats in their previous five matches – a 4-0 loss at Bournemouth, a 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United on Monday.

His side face City again in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, and then meet Tottenham in the Premier League.

Sarri added: “It’s very easy that City is in our minds. We played two weeks ago and now we can try to solve this problem.”

All of Chelsea’s goals against Malmo came in the second half.

Olivier Giroud scored the first from close range before Ross Barkley made it 2-0 with a free-kick from the edge of the box and teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi added a fine third in the 84th minute.

  • Fiorentina destroys Roma 7-1 in Coppa Italia

Fiorentina destroys Roma 7-1 in Coppa Italia

Federico Chiesa scored a hat-trick as Fiorentina humiliated Roma 7-1 to reach the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Italy forward hit the post early on and scored twice in the first 18 minutes in Florence.

Aleksandar Kolarov netted for Roma before Luis Muriel made it 3-1 at half-time.

Chiesa completed his hat-trick in the second half, Giovanni Simeone got two and Marco Benassi also found the net.

Substitute Edin Dzeko was sent off for the visitors late on after arguing with the referee.

It was only the sixth time in the club’s history that Roma had conceded seven goals. The last time was against Bayern Munich in 2014.

Stefano Pioli’s Fiorentina will face holders Juventus or Atalanta, who play later on Wednesday, in a two-legged semi-final.
