  • Roma’, ‘Black Panther’ make history at 2019 Oscars nominations

The critically acclaimed Netflix film ‘Roma’ and superhero flick ‘Black Panther’ have scored record-breaking nominations for the 2019 Oscars.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the nomination list for the 91st Academy Awards was revealed on Tuesday while the ceremony has been scheduled to hold on Feb. 24.

Academy president John Bailey, ‘The Big Sick’ actor Kumail Nanjiani and ‘Black-ish’ star Tracee Ellis Ross announced nominees across the 24 categories.

The Netflix original ‘Roma’, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, landed a Best Picture Oscar nomination and led the pack with 10 nominations alongside period comedy-drama, ‘The Favourite’.

Disney’s ‘Black Panther’, a part of the studio’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, scored the first-ever best picture nomination for a superhero movie.

While earlier Netflix films have received Oscar nominations, mostly in the documentary fields, ‘Roma’ was the company’s first best picture contender.

Before ‘Roma’, Netflix’s best showing at the Oscars was ‘Mudbound’, which received nominations in the supporting actress, adapted screenplay, song and cinematography categories in 2018.

The other nominees for best picture are ‘A Star is Born’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Green Book’, ‘Vice’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’.

  • Arsenal to include Ramsey in swap deal to land Welbeck’s replacement

Arsenal are reportedly considering Roma striker, Patrik Schick in January, Corriere dello Sport reports.

The Seria A side signed Schick before the start of last season, but his progress has stalled due to form and fitness problems.

The 22-year-old hasn’t found the net this season and could be allowed to leave on loan in January.

Arsenal are set to be in the market for a striker, following Danny Welbeck’s injury.

Welbeck is unlikely to return this season, amid fears he suffered a broken ankle in the midweek clash with Sporting Lisbon. Unai Emery needs reinforcements for first-choice forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Roma could look to get Aaron Ramsey as part of a deal to get Schick. Ramsey has been told he will leave the Emirates this summer, after the offer of a new contract was withdrawn.

  • Roma’s Strootman joins Marseille for £22m

Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman has joined Marseille from Roma in a €25m (£22.7m) deal.

The 28-year-old played 44 times last season as Roma finished third in Serie A and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Marseille announced the signing with a Fortnite-style video.

“The club would like to thank Kevin for his service over the years, and wishes him all the best for the future,” Roma said.

Strootman played under current Marseille coach Rudi Garcia when he joined Roma from PSV Eindhoven in 2013.

He is the third high-profile player to leave Roma this summer after Brazil goalkeeper Alisson joined Liverpool in a deal worth up to £66.8m and Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan joined Inter Milan for £33m.

  • Roma fan jailed for Liverpool violence

Roma fan jailed for Liverpool violence

An Italian man has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for his part in violence before a Champions League tie which left a Liverpool fan badly hurt.

Daniele Sciusco, 29, admitted violent disorder before Liverpool’s semi-final against AS Roma at Anfield on April 24.

Sciusco was not responsible for the attack which left Sean Cox, 53, from Ireland, with a serious head injury.

But a judge at Preston Crown Court told him: “It did occur during violent disorder of which you were a part.”

The court heard Sciusco was among a group of Roma “ultras” who had flown from Italy for the match.

CCTV footage showed about 25 of the group in Walton Breck Road, near the stadium.

“Your actions and the actions of the Italian group tarnished significantly what was intended to be a sporting and enjoyable occasion,” said Judge Brown.

“You and others in the ultra group were armed with weapons such as belts and chains and you were threatening and were being abusive towards the Liverpool fans.”

Doctors put Mr Cox, from County Meath, in an induced coma after he was attacked outside a pub near the stadium about an hour before kick-off.

The court heard he was now out of the coma but his condition remained “very dire”.

“The impact on him has been catastrophic,” said Judge Mark Brown.

Nigel Power, defending, said Sciusco worked at a large pharmaceutical practice and volunteered teaching pupils in schools and colleges to use defibrillators.

Mr Power said the defendant, of previous good character, had not drunk any alcohol before the game.

“Although the incident that we have seen on the CCTV was an ugly one, it wasn’t one that this defendant, at least, set out in anticipation of,” he said.

Filippo Lombardi, 21, denies violent disorder and wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Cox and is due to stand trial later this year.

  • Roma owner banned for comments after Liverpool CL defeat

Roma owner James Pallotta has been given a three-month suspension by UEFA for comments after their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.

Pallotta criticised the standard of refereeing in the second leg in Rome on May 2. Roma won 4-2 but lost 7-6 on aggregate as Liverpool progressed to the final in Kiev.

He called the officiating “embarrassing” and said it cost his club a place in the final.

Pallotta also claimed a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) would have helped overturn calls he perceived went in Liverpool’s favour.

The suspension, handed out by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB), means that he cannot enter the technical area or communicate directly or indirectly with the team’s players and or/technical staff during a UEFA competition match for three months.

Pallotta has also been banned from entering the team’s dressing room or the tunnel before or during a match.

Roma finished third in Serie A last season so they will enter the Champions League at the group stage and his suspension will start in their first game in the 2018/19 competition – either September 18 or 19.

It’s not the first time the American billionaire has been in the headlines this year.

After Roma staged a dramatic comeback to beat Barcelona on away goals in the Champions League quarter-finals, he jumped into the Pizza del Popolo fountain and had to apologise to the Mayor of Rome.

Roma were also fined €19,000 (about £17,000) by UEFA for charges relating to the game against Liverpool at the Stadio Olimpico.

The charges were for the setting off of fireworks, insufficient organisation and stairways blocked.

  • Roma defend decision to sell Alisson to Liverpool

Roma defend decision to sell Alisson to Liverpool

Selling Alisson to Liverpool does not show “a lack of ambition”, says Roma’s director of football Monchi, who admits the transfer of the Brazilian is “tough” for fans to take.

The Reds have agreed a fee of about £66.8m for the goalkeeper.

Roma say Alisson is now in Liverpool and “negotiations are advanced”.

“When a very substantial offer comes in you have to consider it,” said Monchi. “We weighed up the pros and cons and decided to speak to Liverpool.”

“Selling Alisson would not show a lack of ambition. For me, ambition is about doing the right thing after thinking everything through.”

Liverpool’s bid, which is 70m euros, would overtake the current record for a keeper – 53m euros paid by Juventus to Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

Alisson, 25, has been at Roma for two years, and played 37 Serie A games last season, after starting his career at Brazilian side Internacional.

Roma’s high profile signings this summer include midfielder Javier Pastore from Paris St-Germain for £21.8m and winger Justin Kluivert from Ajax for £15.16m.

Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan was sold to Serie A rivals Inter Milan.

Monchi added: “I understand the fans’ view. I want them to know we’re working to build a stronger team. Some people never thought we’d be able to sign Kluivert. The same goes for Pastore. Perhaps today is tough for some fans, but we’ve brought in top players.

“I came here to build a strong team, not just for one year but for many years to come – and I’m 100% sure that will be the case.”

  • Liverpool agree world record fee for Brazilian goalkeeper

Liverpool agree world record fee for Brazilian goalkeeper

Liverpool have offered Roma a world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper of £62million in a bid to land Alisson Becker.

The Premier League club are now expected to hold talks with the Brazil international.

The 25-year-old has been at Roma for two years, and played 37 Serie A games last season, after starting his career at Brazilian side Internacional.

Liverpool’s bid, which is 70m euros, would overtake the current record for a keeper – 53m euros paid by Juventus to Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

The Premier League record for a keeper is the 40m euros Manchester City paid Benfica for Ederson in June 2017.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was forced to defend goalkeeper Loris Karius last week after another mistake – this time in a pre-season friendly against Tranmere.

The 25-year-old German spilled a free-kick that allowed the hosts to score in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Prenton Park.

Karius was at fault for two goals in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League final, but it was later found that he had concussion.

Alisson played all five games, keeping three clean sheets, as Brazil were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup by Belgium.

  • BREAKING: Liverpool secure Champions League final, to battle Real Madrid

Liverpool booked their place to face holders Real Madrid in the Champions League final despite losing 4-2 to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jurgen Klopp’s side headed to the Italian capital with a commanding 5-2 advantage from last week’s first leg, where their Serie A opponents snatched faint hopes of a comeback by netting a pair of late away goals.

Still, Roma had no margin for error – certainly not to the magnitude of the woeful blind pass midfielder Radja Nainggolan played in the ninth minute that resulted in Sadio Mane opening the scoring.

An incredibly unfortunate James Milner own goal did not knock Liverpool off their stride, with Georginio Wijnaldum restoring their ample cushion in the 25th minute.

First-leg goalscorer Edin Dzeko got in on the act seven minutes into the second half and frantic Roma pressure followed.

The mountain proved too steep for Eusebio Di Francesco’s side to climb and the chances of a comeback to match their quarter-final heroics against Barcelona had all but evaporated by the time Nainggolan clattered in off the post four minutes from the end and dispatched a penalty deep into stoppage time.

It means only Liverpool’s pursuit of a sixth European title stands between Madrid making it three in succession.

It was a predictably forthright start from the hosts as Dzeko sent the ball skidding dangerously across the six-yard box before Alessandro Florenzi clattered a long-range effort just wide.

But Nainggolan’s mistake allowed Liverpool to further strengthen their hand, with Roberto Firmino collecting a wayward pass and streaming towards the home defence.

The Brazil international played in Mane, who showed none of his first-half skittishness from the opening leg and finished assuredly.

Following that act of self-sabotage, Roma then enjoyed a huge slice of fortune as Dejan Lovren thumped a 15th-minute clearance into the back of Milner’s head for the ball to fly past a helpless Loris Karius.

The Stadio Olimpico crowd were re-energised, but chances continued to fall Liverpool and Mane’s way – a clipped shot flying just wide from the edge of the box before Alisson denied the Senegal star at close quarters following a driving run from Andrew Robertson.

Dzeko failed to clear from the resulting corner, leaving an unmarked Wijnaldum to nod home and put the tie further beyond Roma.

Stephan El Shaarawy’s effort spun off Milner’s outstretched leg 10 minutes before the break to hit the post and Florenzi sliced wastefully wide, although those were fleeting breaks in Liverpool’s first-half control.

Karius was spared by an incorrect offside flag in the 49th minute when he dashed from his goal to bring down Dzeko in the box.

The Liverpool goalkeeper then somewhat charitably pushed El Shaarawy’s shot into Dzeko’s path for the former Manchester City striker to level on the night.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was also partially culpable on Roma’s second goal, but atoned with a brave block to deny El Shaarawy – even if replays showed the ball struck his hand.

Dzeko’s touch let him down and he arrowed a shot wide at the near post following Daniele De Rossi’s cleverly disguised 66th-minute pass.

Alisson stuck out a boot to deny his compatriot Firmino on a Liverpool attack that suggested the storm had passed.

Nainggolan’s late defiance raged against the inevitable – ripping a low drive in off the post before thrashing in a spot-kick after Liverpool substitute Ragnar Klavan was adjudged to have handled – although it was the Belgian’s earlier woe that put Liverpool on the road to Kiev despite their first loss in this season’s competition.

  • Champions League: Salah Shines as Liverpool hit five against Roma

Mohamed Salah produced a dazzling display as Liverpool beat Roma 5-2, although two late away goals could change the semi-final tie.
Liverpool seized control of their Champions League semi-final tie against Roma with a 5-2 first-leg win, although a late revival from the Italian side offers hope of a second-leg comeback.

Mohamed Salah scored twice and set up goals for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, who added another to make it 5-0, before Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti struck in the space of four minutes late on.

Roma must now match the exploits of their remarkable quarter-final comeback against Barcelona if they are to win the tie.

Liverpool were arguably second best in the opening half-hour but a blistering strike from Salah against his old club set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way.

Salah added a second just before the break, becoming the first Liverpool player to hit 10 in a single European campaign, before turning provider for Salah and Firmino as Roma failed miserably to deal with the hosts’ attack.

Firmino nodded in the fifth from a routine set-piece but Eusebio Di Francesco’s men snatched two away goals in the dying minutes to offer some hope of salvation.

The home side lost Oxlade-Chamberlain 17 minutes in after he hurt himself challenging Aleksandar Kolarov, who nearly snatched the lead soon afterwards, with Loris Karius fumbling his fierce strike onto the crossbar.

Mane wasted a great chance one-on-one with Alisson, firing over the bar from 12 yards, but the miss seemed to galvanise Liverpool. Salah saw a shot beaten away by the Roma keeper and Mane turned in an Andrew Robertson cross only to be denied by the offside flag.

There was no such problem for Salah 10 minutes before the break, though. Firmino fed him just inside the area to the right, Roma’s defence stood off, and he curled a stunning strike into the far top corner.

Roma suddenly looked vulnerable at every Liverpool attack and Dejan Lovren should have made it 2-0 as he headed off the crossbar when unmarked six yards from goal.

But Salah made no mistake with a sumptuous second in the 45th minute, racing through onto Firmino’s pass before clipping a clever finish over Alisson.

Roma’s high defensive line was being brutally exposed but they seemed not to learn their lesson 11 minutes after the break. Salah escaped a close offside call to race into the area and squared the ball for Mane, who this time showed composure to side-foot into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later, Liverpool had their fourth. Salah again raced onto a simple ball down the right, skipped beyond Juan Jesus and scuffed a cross to the far post, where Firmino tapped in.

What looked to be a memorable win was tarnished nine minutes before the end, though, as Dzeko pulled down Radja Nainggolan’s fine pass before burying a finish beyond Karius.

Perotti then fired a penalty high into the net after James Milner blocked Nainggolan’s shot with his arm, giving Roma hope of a second-leg turnaround that had looked practically impossible with 80 minutes played.
