‘Someone who knows little about football’ – Mourinho slams Roma owner

Football manager Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Roma owner Dan Friedkin.

The Portuguese was sacked by Friedkin last month and replaced by Daniele De Rossi.

Speaking as an ambassador for Football.com, Mourinho said: “The European competitions are about to begin, in particular the Champions League, perhaps the most important competition on the world calendar.

“I won’t be there at these final phases, not because I have already been eliminated, but because I was ‘eliminated’ by someone who knows little about football.

“That’s life, full of ups and downs, and I’m growing, despite the unexpected and unfair dismissal.

“But I’ll be back, and with even more enthusiasm and confidence, for these UEFA matches.”

Mourinho lived like an emperor in Rome – Scarnecchia defends Roma sack

Former Roma star Roberto Scarnecchia feels it was the right time to dismiss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was axed and replaced by Daniele de Rossi last week.

Scarnecchia told TMW Radio: “Mourinho arrived with many good intentions, then at a certain point he began to be a manager and no longer a coach and he lost sight of the pitch and the players.

“He began to make declarations beyond all limits, he pulled the string too much and the string breaks even if your name is Mourinho. The club, after too many negative results, was waiting for him to lose consensus with the fans and after the derby and the match against Milan the fans began to divide and the club decided to sack him.

“I think there was only Saudi Arabia, I don’t think Mou had offers in Europe. This is the reason for the coach’s many appeals to the club. Probably after Roma he understood that perhaps in Arabia he would not live as an emperor like in Rome, where he could do everything.”

Serie A: We’ll fight for fourth place – Mourinho

Roma manager Jose Mourinho says they’re in a solid position for the Christmas break.

Victory over Napoli sees Roma sitting in sixth place on the Serie A table.

Mourinho said: “I prefer to set my own objectives, which is take it one game at a time. There is a very simple reason for that. It is not a criticism, it is nobody’s fault, but we have a group of players with a difficult medical history. If we are all ready, I have no problem saying we can fight it out with everyone – not for the Scudetto, obviously – but for fourth place.

“Unfortunately, we have these difficulties. There is also the Financial Fair Play situation that is tough to deal with. So I don’t like to talk about objectives. We are united, it is an extraordinary group of lads who always try to help each other out.

“What we wanted to do in January on the transfer market is not something that we can do, but we go forward. We’ll see. We won against Napoli and next we have Juventus.”

Transfer: Roma set to sign Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea FC have agreed a season-long loan deal with Roma for Romelu Lukaku, the PA news agency understands.

The Serie A side will pay £8 million to take the wantaway striker for a year as a solution to the stand-off between player and club appears finally to be in sight.

PA understands that there is no obligation for the club to make the deal permanent.

The uncertainty had surrounding Lukaku, who joined Chelsea for £97.5 million in 2021.

He scored only eight Premier League goals in 26 games before being loaned out to Inter Milan last season.

Mauricio Pochettino hinted last week that he would be willing to consider reintegrating the Belgium international into his squad, if no deal for him to leave could be reached before Friday’s transfer deadline.

But that impasse was averted on Monday night after a deal was struck for the 30-year-old, who spent three years on Chelsea’s books between 2011-14.

He made just 10 appearances between loan spells at West Brom and Everton, to join up with ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho in the Italian capital.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho spoke to Mason Greenwood in a private phone call recently.

The forward, who United have insisted is innocent of the charges that were brought against him in early 2022, will never play for United’s first team again.

Per The Sun, Mourinho spoke to Greenwood to ask him about a possible loan move to Roma.

The two are well acquainted, given Mourinho’s time as United boss a few years ago.

Whether Greenwood is one who Roma could bring into Serie A, given the issues in his personal life, is unclear.

Europa League final: UEFA bans Jose Mourinho

Roma coach, Jose Mourinho has been issued a four-match suspension by UEFA for his behaviour at last month’s Europa League final.

Mourinho faced widespread criticism after he directed abuse at English referee, Anthony Taylor, following his side’s defeat to Sevilla.

UEFA also announced West Ham fans would be banned from their next away match in European competition, with a further match suspended for two years.

That is related to the Hammers fans throwing missiles onto the pitch during their Europa Conference League final win over Fiorentina in Prague earlier this month.

The Italian club’s defender Cristiano Biraghi suffered a cut to the head from an object thrown from the crowd.

Mourinho criticised Taylor in his post-match press conference and, in video footage which later emerged on social media, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager was seen gesticulating at Taylor and officials in the stadium car park and heard saying “disgrace”.

Subsequent video footage of Taylor being accosted by angry fans at Budapest Airport was condemned by the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

West Ham condemned the behaviour of a section of their support in the wake of Biraghi sustaining a head injury.

A club statement issued on the evening of the final concluded: “In line with our zero-tolerance approach, anyone identified will have their details passed to the police and will be given an indefinite ban and therefore be unable to enter London Stadium and travel with the club. There is no place for this kind of behaviour at West Ham United.”

UEFA confirmed West Ham had also been fined 8,000 euros (£6,882) for an invasion of the field of play.

“There is sadness and disappointment in everyone because we fought hard to get to the final. Seeing others celebrate will stay with us for a long time. We have to try to have another chance next season.
