    Mourinho gives emotional speech after Conference League victory

    Roma coach Jose Mourinho gave an emotional speech after winning the Europa Conference League final in Tirana.

    Roma defeated Feyenoord 1-0 in Tirana thanks to Nicolo Zaniolo’s winner.

    “There are so many things going through my head. So many things at the same time,” said Mourinho.

    “I’ve been at Roma for 11 months, I realised the moment I arrived what it meant, they were waiting for this. As I told the lads in the locker room in Turin, we did what we needed to do, qualify for the Europa League. We had great work all season.

    “This was not work tonight, this was history. We had to write history. We wrote it.”

    Roma had never won a major UEFA tournament before, as the Fairs Cup was not recognised in the 1960s, losing Finals in 1984 and 1991.

    “The Conference League is a competition that we had the sensation from the start we could win, but it got a stronger competition when the Europa League teams came in, Leicester City, Olympique Marseille and Feyenoord. But we were counting on it, we could’ve had a few more points in Serie A, but we put so much into this competition.

    “Now I am staying, there are no doubts. Even if some rumours emerge, I only want to remain at Roma. We must understand what our owners, who are fantastic people, want to do next season, because this is history, but we can build a really strong project with honest professionals.

    “We need to sit down and understand what the plan is for next season.

    “This remains in the history of Roma, but also mine, I was told only I, Sir Alex and Giovanni Trapattoni won trophies in three different decades. It makes me feel a little old, but it’s nice for my career!

    “Now I will go on vacation and sit on the beach to think about all this for a while.

    “The great thing about my career is that, aside from the Europa League with Manchester United, doing it with Porto, Inter and Roma is very, very, very special. It’s one thing to win when everyone expects it, when you made the investments to win, but it’s quite another to win when something remains immortal, that feels truly special.

    “I think of myself, of course, but above all the Roma fans who can celebrate tonight, enjoy themselves and remember this night forever.”

    Mourinho concluded: “Of course I feel like a Romanista, but that might be my way of working. I am a Porto fan, an Inter fan, a Chelsea fan, I am crazy about Real Madrid, I am now a Roma fan, I belong to all those clubs because we had these moments together.

    “Tonight, with all due respect for all the clubs I worked for before, I am 100 per cent Romanista, because these fans are truly incredible.”

    Roma won their first major European trophy by beating Feyenoord in the inaugural Europa Conference League final.

    Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge of the Italians ended with a trophy after Nicolo Zaniolo chested down Gianluca Mancini’s lofted pass before beating goalkeeper Justin Bijlow with a clever flick.

    Mourinho, who has won the Champions League, Europa League and the Uefa Cup, is the first manager to win all of Uefa’s major European trophies.

    The Portuguese was criticised after Roma were embarrassed 6-1 in Norway by Bodo/Glimt in the group stage last October.

    But this win continued the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager’s perfect record in European finals, having now overseen five wins in five finals.

    Feyenoord, whose campaign started in the qualifying rounds back in July, were denied an equaliser when Rui Patricio tipped Tyrell Malacia’s attempt on to the bar soon after Mancini inadvertently hit his own post while trying to make a clearance.

    Tammy Abraham has left the door open to leaving Roma this summer.

    Abraham scored twice in Roma’s 3-0 win at Torino last night ahead of next week’s Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.

    The former Chelsea striker has been linked with Arsenal.

    “I would’ve loved to get three and score a hat-trick for my team, but the most important thing is we won. It’s been a long hard season, fair play to all my teammates, we’ve done well, now we’ve got a Final to look forward to and we’re all excited,” Abraham told DAZN.

    “Like I’ve always said, I fell in love with this club from the first day and I will always help the team as much as possible with my goals and assists.

    “It’s been a good year for me, I hope to build on this year and hopefully we can finish with a trophy and it can be the perfect year.”

    The Europa Conference League Final is against Feyenoord on Wednesday evening in Tirana.

    “This is a dream come true for Roma fans, for the club, we’ve made it to the Final, now we have to rest and recover well, so hopefully we’ll be celebrating on Wednesday night.

    “I love this club. They’ve given me the opportunity to show myself, my heart is here. We’ll see what the future holds, but my heart is here.”

    Roma coach Jose Mourinho has enjoyed a new swipe at Manchester United over their trophy record since he left.

    Mourinho says Erik ten Hag and his other Old Trafford successors are “no longer expected to lift trophies”.

    Serial winner Mourinho was the last manager to win silverware at United, securing three trophies – the Community Shield, the League Cup and the Europa League – during the 2016-17 campaign.

    Ahead of what will be his fifth European final on Thursday, where his Roma side take on Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League showpiece in Albania, Mourinho was asked if critics had been too quick to write him and 62-year-old Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti off too quickly.

    Mourinho couldn’t resist taking a poke at the Red Devils, saying: “I believe that the problem with Carlo Ancelotti was that when you coach Everton you are not about to win the Champions League.

    “And with me, you know, people they saw me taking up jobs where they thought that I could win trophies but they were not jobs where we were expected to lift trophies.

    “But when you have such a winning career on a cyclical basis so to speak, you can expect that, people can say that. Personally I’m not worried about this [being replaced by younger coaches]. I do not think and focus on the generations, I focus on quality.”

    He continued: “It’s a matter of quality, motivation, passion. Without passion you are finished. Without pressure in the build-up to big games you are finished. I know very well myself, I know very well Carlito as well, but there are more examples that we could make.

    “But we are the ones who will call it when we want to stop, and I’m afraid people will have to wait a long time before I say that it’s over!”

    Roma manager Jose Mourinho is being linked with Premier League club Newcastle United.

    According to Marca, despite the team’s success under Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s owners are considering Mourinho.

    Newcastle’s Saudi owners are prepared to axe Howe if Mourinho is willing to make the move.

    Mourinho has a contract at Roma to 2024 and like Howe has enjoyed some success this season, leading the club to the final of Europa Conference League.

    Howe’s deal with the Magpies runs to 2023.

    Roma manager, Jose Mourinho has revealed that if Tammy Abraham wants to return to England, he won’t block the move.

    TheNewsGuru reports that the England international has been a revelation since joining the Serie A side from Chelsea.

    Mourinho said: “I do not think it is an easy decision for a young, local player to leave his club, to leave his house, his city, his country, to leave the Premier League – which of course is a league that is difficult for players to leave.

    “He chose to do it and I think he did it by trusting me. If he wants to go back to England, I do not think he wants to do it now – but if he wants to go back to England, he just needs to snap his fingers.

    “I’m so happy for him, back in the national team and loved in Rome. I do not want to say that he has proven that everyone is wrong, because I think everyone knows that he is a good player.”

    Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers has hailed Roma coach Jose Mourinho ahead of their Europa Conference League semifinal.

    The Foxes welcome Roma for the first leg on Thursday.

    It is Mourinho’s first game back in England since being sacked by Tottenham last year.

    Rodgers, who worked with Mourinho at Chelsea, said: “He has nothing to prove to anyone. He will always be a winner. I cannot speak any higher of him. He is one of the greats of our generation.

    “He had the X-Factor. There wasn’t one single thing. He was brilliant in so many aspects of the game. Detail orientated, man management of the players, his understanding of the tactical adaptation of the game, he had that special quality I was able to see.

    “I have got nothing but admiration for him. I became a manager in my own right but I will never forget what I gained from him as a young coach. I studied him and watched him and at that time it was a really special period.”

    Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen has slammed Jose Mourinho after his clash with Roma goalkeeper coach Nuno Gomes last week.

    Knutsen and members of Roma’s staff have been suspended by UEFA as they investigate last week’s incident.

    “Events like this make me want to move into a different field. I even considered whether it was really a good idea to continue working in football,” said Knutsen.

    “What happened is so far from my values, those of the club and of Norwegian football. In these situations, you need to find the strength in yourself and react in the best possible way.

    “The most important thing for me is being able to look yourself in the mirror. If I couldn’t do that anymore, I would really have to consider if this was worth it.”

    On Mourinho’s reaction to the bust-up, Knutsen added: “This type of attitude is shocking. His values and his way of coaching are so far from what I represent. It’s incredibly disappointing to see such behaviour from a coach with so many titles and who has been part of the sport for such a long time.”

    Roma striker Tammy Abraham is delighted with his first season at the Stadio Olimpico.

    The England international is proud of how he has handled his move to the Serie A side and also is enjoying playing for coach Jose Mourinho.

    “At first, when they initially contacted me, I thought to myself, ‘This isn’t for me’”, Abraham told CBS Sports.

    “But then, when people explain to your their ambitions, and show that they have faith you and make you feel valuable, that’s when you want to give them everything you can.”

    “As soon as I arrived here, I fell in love with this place.”

    On Mourinho, he continued: “I still look up to him as an idol. And I never told him this, but every time I see him I’m still star-struck even though I see him every day.

    “When he was at Chelsea, I was there, but I was still a young kid. I trained with him a couple of times so I knew what he was like a little bit and since coming here, I call him my uncle of Rome.”

    Spezia coach Thiago Motta says he’ll choose a team to win against Roma on Sunday.

    Motta says he’ll select a XI to exploit the weaknesses he sees in the Roma team.

    He said, “Every game is a different story, it didn’t go well in Bologna, but we know there are many things we need to improve, starting with time and ball management.

    “The important thing for us now is to find the continuity we’ve shown at the start of 2022. We will face an important team, built for Europe, but we will play in our stadium and we will do our best, trying to bring the challenge on our side, doing our best to deserve a positive result.

    “Kovalenko is training well, obviously, it is a difficult moment for him and for all of us in the world. History has taught us that wars are to be avoided, so let’s hope that the situation evolves in the best possible way. For our part we will try to be as close to him as possible, he has all our support.

    “The choices I’ve made have always been based on the moment and the game we’re facing, to do it in the best possible way. Bourabia is a midfielder who has always trained to the maximum, there are no preclusions: we still have one more training session before the game to assess which will be the best team to deploy.”
