Mourinho makes move for Cristiano Ronaldo

Serie Club Roma are in contact with Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Sun says Paris St Germain, Bayern Munich and Roma, who are led by the star’s former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, have expressed an interest in the striker.

His agent Jorge Mendes held talks with new Old Trafford supremo Richard Arnold over concerns about his team’s poor form.

They were knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough and are in a real fight for fourth place in the Premier League after disappointing draws with Burnley and Southampton.

The ex-Real Madrid man is also struggling and will be looking to end his longest goal drought in more than a decade when United host Brighton this evening.

Ronaldo is understood to only wish to stay if United qualify for next season’s Champions League.

He also has concerns over the attitude of some of his team-mates amid their recent struggles.

Antonio Cassano criticises Mourinho work at Roma

Former Roma striker Antonio Cassano believes the team is still struggling under Jose Mourinho.

Cassano was reacting to Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Genoa.

He said on Bobo TV: “Roma are playing badly and I don’t want to use excuses linked to incidents or anything else. Against Genoa you have to win because you’re stronger. Of those in the top half of the table I think the Giallorossi are the biggest disappointment.

“After the first few months with a very good football proposal, the candle has gone out. And I don’t know if it’s down to the 6-1 win over Bodo or the players or something else. For sure Mourinho needs to be given more time, but today the team is suffering, struggling and has no tactical idea.

“I don’t think Mourinho has yet managed to provide the stability the team needs.”

Roma chief reveals Chelsea buy-back option for Abraham

Roma chief Tiago Pinto has revealed Chelsea have a buy-back option for Tammy Abraham.

Abraham has been impressive since his summer arrival from Chelsea for €40m.

“It’s true, that clause does exist, but we are not worried,” said Pinto.

“It’s only valid from 2023, but I am not concerned. I am happy because he is playing well and can get even better.”

Pinto also said, “People complain I don’t speak enough, but I don’t like. Joao Moutinho was a joke dreamed up by social media, which fuelled the newspapers. Boubacar Kamara was a lie too, we never negotiated for him. So stop calling them objectives we missed out on, because we didn’t go for them at all.”

Roma were awarded a penalty kick after Matthijs de Ligt was shown a second yellow card for handball with nine minutes remaining.

But Szczesny guessed the right way to save Pellegrini’s penalty kick in front of a stunned home crowd.

Juventus moved up to 38 points in fifth place, six points ahead of eighth-placed Roma.

  • Maitland-Niles reveals chat: Mourinho, Abraham convinced me to join Roma

Maitland-Niles reveals chat: Mourinho, Abraham convinced me to join Roma

Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles admits a chat with Tammy Abraham helped convince him about a loan move to Roma.

Maitland-Niles is the third England international in the Giallorossi squad after former Chelsea striker Abraham and ex-Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

“I spoke to Tammy, Tammy’s a great guy. I don’t know Chris like that, but I am sure I will get to know him better now that I am here. Tammy told me what a great club it is and he wanted me to come so much, so we spoke back and forth about it,” he said.

“I decided to come here for myself, for my career and for my future – and to help the team too. So I am here now and I am ready to get to work.”

Maitland-Niles says a call from Roma coach Jose Mourinho was also decisive.

“It’s very big. He’s one of the best managers in the world – if not the best. He’s won numerous titles and he’s just a great person. He speaks the truth, he’s a happy person and he wants to win. And that’s what football is about: winning. So to be working under a manager like that; you can’t really ask for any more than that as a player.

“He came to dinner last night. We were speaking about the plans going forward and what he wants from me and what he expects. It was a good conversation.”

Maitland-Niles has been catching up on Serie A games recently and is ready to face Juventus tomorrow evening.

“There have been a lot of fast tempo games and there are a lot of aggressive teams in the league. I think I am suited for this type of football, you know. Coming from the Premier League, I don’t think Serie A is so different. I just want to be out there on the pitch, take it all in, and play well.”

The player was not allowed to join Everton on loan last summer, forcing him to vent his frustrations on social media.

“Ainsley came to me and explained the reasons why he thought the best thing for him and his career was to move away,” said Arteta on Friday.

“He felt the opportunity to go to Rome and work with Jose was a good one.

“Being fair with the amount of minutes that he’s played he was entitled to that opportunity. We wish him the best.

“We’re very short at the moment [in midfield], but this shouldn’t be the only reason for keeping a player.

“Ainsley was very straight with me and I understood the situation. Obviously, we’re going to move and look for options as we’re very short there.”
