  • Ronaldinho loses foot volley match to prisoners

Ronaldinho’s golden touch during a prison foot volley game deserted him after he lost a doubles against inmates convicted of robbery and murder.

Footage of the 40-year-old former Barcelona and AC Milan star showing off his skills with a series of deft right-foot touches and winning headers has gone viral.

Ronaldinho was partnered with a prison worker during their first encounter.

But local reports said they lost a second contest against a pair of disgraced former police officers. They were named as killer Edgar Ramirez Otazu, 36 and robber Yoni David Mereles Martinez, 33.

The first man is said to be serving an 18-year prison sentence for the murder of a man called Fabio Ramon Cuenca Gimenez, shot in the head during a May 2010 pitched battle after a music festival.

The second man is reportedly serving a 10-year prison sentence for robbery, after cash stolen by a security van driver was then taken by a number of corrupt serving police officers. The company Ronaldinho is now keeping in the prison on the outskirts of the Paraguayan capital Asuncion shows how far he has fallen from his heyday when he won two FIFA World Player of the Year Awards as well as a Ballon d’Or.

Samuel Eto’o sends birthday message to Ronaldinho in prison

Samuel Eto’o posted an emotional birthday message to Ronaldinho as the Brazilian football legend spent his 40th birthday in a Paraguayan jail.

Ronaldinho was arrested this month in Paraguay after allegedly producing a false passport to enter the country and has been held behind bars pending a court case that has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Together at Barcelona, Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho won two Champions League titles, four La Liga, one Copa del Rey and two Supercopa de Espana titles and formed a tight bond

Ronaldinho, who during his playing days starred for Barcelona and AC Milan, clocked 40 on Saturday and four-time African Player of the Year Eto’o took to his Instagram page to wish his former teammate a happy birthday.

“Happy birthday my brother,” Eto’o said in the video.

“Hello brother, I have no words, brother. I don’t even know what to say, we are talking to see how we can encourage you,”

“You are my brother, my friend. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. I can only ask you to have strength and to pray a lot.

“I hope that all this can be solved soon, because you were frankly a good person and a good friend. From here, the black loves you very much and you can count on me for everything you need.

“What I can do, I will do. And if I can’t do it, I’ll ask a friend for the favour.”

Messi hire Lawyers to get Ronaldinho out of jail

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has reportedly hired four lawyers to bail his football idol and former teammate, Ronaldinho Gaucho who is currently in jail in Paraguay.

According to reports, Messi is going to pay all of Ronaldinho’s debts and will pay €4M to lawyers to get Ronaldinho out of Jail for a fake passport lawsuit against him.

The pair played together briefly at Barca when Messi was still coming through as a youngster, while Ronaldinho was perhaps the best footballer on the planet at that time.

Former Brazil and ex-FC Barcelona player Ronaldinho Gaucho is adapting quickly to life in a Paraguayan jail, the head of the facility told Reuters on Monday.

The former Paris St-Germain (PSG) forward’s lawyers are however hopeful he may soon be released into house arrest while the investigation continues.

“In broad terms he is doing very well,” prison warden Blas Vera told Reuters in a telephone interview. “I see he is in good spirits, just like you see him on television, always smiling.”

Vera said Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto Assis, who were arrested on Friday for using a false Paraguayan passport, would present their case to a judge on Tuesday.

Their lawyer Sergio Queiroz told Reuters they had asked a court to release them into house arrest and offered guarantees they were not a flight risk.

Vera said the 39-year old former AC Milan player and his brother had beds, a television and a fan in their cell at the prison on the outskirts of the capital Asuncion.

The brothers use a communal bathroom and have the right to use the outdoor patio on a regular basis.

The pair’s lawyers have provided them with meals and they have not eaten the food offered by the jail.

The maximum security facility has around 195 detainees, including politicians and police officers accused of corruption as well as major drug traffickers.

The more dangerous prisoners are housed in a different wing to Ronaldinho, Vera said, adding that he was working to ensure the pair’s stay is “as comfortable as possible”.

Carlos Gamarra, the former captain of Paraguay’s national team who also played for several Brazilian clubs, visited Ronaldinho with a group of ex-players in jail on Sunday.

Vera said others who were at the regular Sunday visiting time befriended the Brazilian.

“There was also a group of boys and girls and he welcomed them, gave them hugs and chatted with them,” he said.

Ronaldinho, who was last year named a tourist ambassador by Brazil’s far-right government, arrived in Paraguay on Wednesday, invited to the landlocked South American nation by a local casino owner.

Although he last played professionally in 2015, Ronaldinho, who also represented Brazilian clubs Atletico Mineiro, Flamengo and Fluminense, is still hugely popular with global football fans and advertisers.

He won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2006.

Ronaldinho was also named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

  • Third night behind bars: Lawyer fights for Ronaldinho over faked Paraguay passport

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho did not deliberately use a fake passport and should be released by authorities in Paraguay, his lawyer said.

The two-time world player of the year and his brother Roberto, who was detained with him, spent their third night behind bars in the capital Asuncion on Sunday after using forged travel documents to enter the country.

Their Brazilian lawyer Sergio Queiroz said he would ask for the pair to be released and allowed to return to their home country when they next appear before a judge on Monday.

“Ronaldinho did not commit a crime because he did not know that the passport they gave him was faked,” he said.

Queiroz said that prosecutors had agreed that the footballer had acted in good faith and the decision by a judge to order their detention was unwarranted.

Ronaldinho, considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, was the star of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup win and played for Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Barcelona, among others.

He and his brother arrived in Asuncion from Brazil on Wednesday and showed their passports to immigration police, who did not immediately notice any problem with the documents.

Hours later, when the passports were determined to be fake, investigators raided the room Ronaldinho was staying in and seized the brothers’ identity cards and travel documents.

Ronaldinho said the passports had been given him by people who had invited him to attend conferences sponsored by charities working with disadvantaged children.

  • Ronaldinho must remain in Paraguayan jail – Judge

Former Brazilian international Ronaldinho Gaucho was ordered to remain in jail in Paraguay on Saturday after a judge ruled him a flight risk.

The ex-FC Barcelona forward was arrested on Friday for attempting to enter Paraguay with a false passport two days earlier.

He spent Friday night in a police cell along with his brother and business manager Roberto Assis.

The pair asked to be released into house arrest but that was rejected by the judge, who also dismissed Assis’s claims to have a heart problem because he showed no proof.

Judge Clara Ruiz Diaz said their alleged offence was a “serious one against the interests of the Paraguayan state”.

“Because the pair posed a flight risk they must remain in custody,’’ she added.

Under Paraguayan law, officials now have six months to complete their investigation.

But Ronaldinho’s lawyers, who called the decision “incredible,” are expected to present an appeal in the coming days.

“He (Ronaldinho) doesn’t understand what’s going on,” Tarek Tuma told reporters.

Saturday’s courtroom drama came after an astonishing four days that began on Wednesday when the duo attempted to enter Paraguay with doctored passports.

They were detained but a prosecutor who believed they were tricked into taking the fake documents recommended they be released after receiving an alternative punishment such as paying a fine to charity.

A judge, though, rejected that idea late on Friday and shortly afterwards the pair were arrested.

A police official told local media the pair had been placed in a cell with one other inmate.

They were given soap, cushions and repellent to protect against mosquitoes.

Although workers at the facility took selfies with the famous detainee, officials said the Brazilians did not receive any preferential treatment.

Paraguayan television showed the two men arriving in court in handcuffs at around noon local time on Saturday.

The brothers were invited to Paraguay by a local casino owner and had arrived on Wednesday to take part in a football clinic for children and a book launch.

Although he last played professionally in 2015, Ronaldinho, who also represented Brazilian clubs Atletico Mineiro, Flamengo and Fluminense, is still hugely popular with global football fans for his skills and showmanship.

The 39-year-old was named FIFA world player of the year in 2004 and 2005.

He won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and the Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2006.

  • Ronaldinho, brother Roberto handcuffed, sent to Paraguayan jail

Former Barcelona and AC Milan forward Ronaldinho and his brother were taken into custody for allegedly attempting to enter the country with ‘adulterated’ documents.

Ronaldinho has spent the night in a police cell after being dramatically arrested following a U-turn by Paraguayan prosecutors over his use of an adulterated passport.

The former Barcelona and AC Milan star was told on Thursday after an eight-hour grilling that he would not face trial for entering the country with a falsified Paraguayan passport showing he was a naturalised citizen.

But his hopes of returning home a free man were frustrated last night when prosecuti

A Paraguayan judge ordered Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho detained behind bars on Saturday after being arrested and handcuffed for entering Paraguay on a fake passport.

The two-time world player of the year and his brother Roberto, who was detained with him, had spent the night in the headquarters of the Specialized Police Group in the capital city.

The pair appeared Saturday morning before Judge Clara Ruiz Diaz at the Palace of Justice.

Prosecutor Osmar Legal said Ronaldinho — his full name is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira — and his brother were being charged with using false official documents, and he requested that they be held in preventive detention.

The judge agreed. “They committed a serious act that threatens the state,” she said, and ordered them held.

A lawyer for the brothers, Tarek Tuma, called the judge’s decision “irrational (and) arbitrary” and demanded that the judge recuse herself.

Ronaldinho was the star of Brazil’s 2002 world championship team; he played professionally for teams including Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Barcelona, and was considered one of the greatest players of all time.

He spent Friday night in an administrative office in police headquarters that had been converted to serve as a cell, said Commissioner Blas Vera.

Ronaldinho, winner of the prestigious Ballon d’Or prize in 2005, was allowed visitors — one brought him blankets and bedding — and was even permitted to order a late dinner from a fast-food chain.

The incident began on Wednesday when the brothers arrived at the Asuncion international airport, coming from Brazil, and showed their passports to immigration police, who did not immediately spot the problem.

But hours later, when the passports were determined to be fake, investigators raided the room Ronaldinho was staying in and seized the brothers’ identity cards and passports.

Ronaldinho said the documents had been given him by people who had invited him to attend conferences sponsored by charities working with disadvantaged children.

The soccer legend was also scheduled to open a casino belonging to a Brazilian businessman.

Brazilian authorities revoked Ronaldinho’s passport in late 2018 after he failed to pay a $2.5 million fine for building a pier in a protected lake, Brazilian media reported.

A representative of Ronaldinho, Wilmondes Sousa Lira, who is Brazilian, was charged with producing and using false documents as well as criminal association and was ordered held in the Tacumbu prison.

Two Paraguayan women, Maria Isabel Gayoso and Esperanza Apolonia Caballero, were charged with abuse of identity documents and criminal association.

Prosecutors said they had provided the fake documents to the Brazilians. They were placed under house arrest.

on chiefs reversed an earlier decision to offer him a plea bargain deal and police formally arrested him and his brother Roberto at the Sheraton Hotel in the capital Asuncion.

They spent the night in a police cell and now face a second quiz expected to take place today.

In a new development to the rollercoaster case a prosecutor specialising in financial crimes was brought into the ongoing probe, sparking local speculation the investigation would now be widened to look into possible money laundering.

A Brazilian businessman named as Wilmondes Sousa Lira who has been accused of providing Ronaldinho and his brother with the adulterated passports they used to get into Paraguay, was arrested on Wednesday and has been remanded in prison.

Two Paraguayan women thought to be the legitimate owners of the passports modified to show the former footballer and his brother as the holders, were also held.

Ronaldinho was arrested after a judge refused to rubber-stamp the deal announced by prosecutors on Thursday, which involved the Brazilian co-operating with authorities and admitting to using an adulterated passport to get into Paraguay to escape trial and ‘get off’ with a fine.

He now faces an extended period of time on remand in prison if the courts decide he is a flight risk and decide against bailing him.

A spokesman for Paraguay’s General Attorney’s Office, confirming the prosecution U-turn in a statement, said last night/on Friday night: “Paraguay’s General Attorney’s Office has rectified its position.

Ronaldinho avoids charge for fake passport

Former Brazil forward Ronaldinho will not be charged for using a fake passport to enter Paraguay, says the lead official in the case.

The 39-year-old and his brother were both questioned by law enforcement on Thursday having shown false documents.

Prosecutor Federico Delfino said the brothers were aware they had committed a crime but said they did so unwittingly.

The pair have agreed to face an alternative punishment.

“We are looking for a different way out of this that doesn’t result in a formal accusation and that recognises that these people were, we can say, taken by surprise,” Delfino told reporters in Asuncion, Paraguay’s capital.

Another man who travelled with the brothers – 45-year-old Wilmondes Sousa Lira – was held.

A judge will decide whether to accept Delfino’s recommendation on Friday. An alternative punishment could be a fine payable to a local charity.

Reuters report that Ronaldinho’s lawyer Adolfo Marin could not be reached for comment.

The brothers left Guarulhos airport in Sao Paulo on Wednesday with Brazilian passports and were given Paraguayan ones “as soon as they got off the plane” in Asuncion.

According to Delfino, the pair said the passports were a gift. An investigation indicated the numbers on the passports corresponded to other people.

The twice World Player Of The Year had travelled to the South American country to promote a book and a campaign for underprivileged children.

Ronaldinho was the 2004 and 2005 World Player of the Year and enjoyed the prime of his career at Spanish giants Barcelona. He won the World Cup in 2002 alongside fellow superstar forwards Ronaldo and Rivaldo.

  • Ronaldinho arrested in Paraguay over fake passport claims

Brazil Football star, Ronaldinho has been arrested in Paraguay for allegedly using false documentation to enter the South American country.

The 39-year-old, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, was detained in the Resort Yacht & Golf Club Paraguayo along with his brother Roberto on Wednesday night, the Ministry of Interior of Paraguay has confirmed.

According to La Nacion, passports were found in the hotel bearing the names of Ronaldinho and Roberto with Paraguayan nationality.

Both the brothers remained in the hotel suite overnight, with Paraguayan authorities due to issue a statement on Thursday morning.

An official statement from the Paraguayan police had earlier revealed that Ronaldinho and his entourage had been invited to Paraguay by casino owner Nelson Belotti.

The former Brazil international was expected to hold several publicity events, with the media invited to witness his interaction with fans and dignitaries.

Ronaldinho is currently without a Brazilian passport because of an environmental fine he received in 2018.

The former Barcelona star and his brother were convicted of illegally building a fishing trap at Lake Guaiba in 2015 without proper licensing in a permanent preservation area.

That conviction saw the duo handed an $8.5 million (£6.5m) fine in November 2018 and after failing to pay up, Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice decided to stop Ronaldinho from being able to leave the country.

Despite being unable to travel out of Brazil, Ronaldinho was unveiled as one of the country’s new ambassadors for tourism in September last year.

Literally stranded in his homeland, the former AC Milan star said at the time that he was trying to make the most of his situation after accepting a role to promote Brazil’s tourism.

“Tourism is very important for generating jobs and regaining our image internationally,” Ronaldinho said at his unveiling as an ambassador.

Ronaldinho enjoyed a distinguished playing career across South America and Europe – winning the Champions League, La Liga, Serie A and Copa Libertadores.

He also secured numerous individual honours, including the 2005 Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

The Porto Alegre-born forward lifted the World Cup in South Korea and Japan in 2002 and won the Copa America with his national team in 1999.

  • Ronaldinho named Brazil tourism ambassador

Barcelona legend, Ronaldinho has been appointed as Brazil’s new ambassador for tourism, according to the Daily Mail.

“Tourism is very important for generating jobs and regaining our image internationally,” Ronaldinho said at his unveiling on Thursday.

Ronaldinho was praised by the Brazilian Institute of Tourism’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Osvaldo Matos de Melo Junior.

“You take the case of Ronaldinho, a person who has almost 100million followers in his networks and voluntarily helps us at no cost for patriotism. This attitude is invaluable,” Osvaldo said.

“Just by issuing a visa to countries like the United States and Canada, we have already had over 200 per cent increase in demand for our country. We will increasingly invest, even in intelligence, to achieve our goals.”

Ronaldinho won many honours during his glittering career with Fluminense, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan including a World Cup with Brazil in 2002, the Ballon d’Or in 2005, and the Champions League with Barcelona in 2005-06.

The 39-year-old officially announced his retirement from football in 2018.
