Ronaldo wouldn’t join Man City – Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney does not believe Cristiano Ronaldo would join Manchester City.

Rooney and Ronaldo were part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side that won the Premier League, Champions League, and other trophies from 2005 to 2009.

While Ronaldo eventually left for Real Madrid, Rooney stayed at United to achieve more success.

Ronaldo is now being linked with a move from Juventus to City in the final days of the transfer window.

“I think Cristiano has got a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and a person,” Rooney told talkSPORT.

“I can’t see [him joining City], but it’s football so you never know. There have been a few that have done it but no one at Cristiano’s level. Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I just can’t see that as an option for him really.

“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do it. I think it’s more likely that it’s PSG he goes to.”

Rooney added: “I think you need to do what’s right for you as a person, for your family.

“Everyone knows I could never play for Liverpool or Manchester City. That’s obvious but everyone’s different.

“I think people move to clubs where they don’t really want to but from a financial point of view that might be the only option they have, so I might get it from some people’s point of view.

“But in terms of myself that just wouldn’t be an option.”

Ronaldo informs Juve teammates of Man City decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has told his Juventus teammates that he expects to sign for Manchester City.

Speculation is rife that the Portugal international is ready to leave Italy following a disappointing campaign for Juventus in which they missed out on winning the Serie A title.

Ronaldo reportedly requested to be left out of the starting XI for Juventus’ opening match of the season against Udinese.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was subsequently named on the bench, coming on with half an hour to go in the 2-2 draw.

Sky Italia says Ronaldo has informed his Juve teammates he plans to leave this month and sign for Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s City recently U-turned on their decision to target Ronaldo after Harry Kane announced he would be staying at Tottenham.

Ex-Juve president: Signing Cristiano Ronaldo was a mistake

Former Juventus president, Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, has said the club made a mistake by signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gigli also claimed Ronaldo is hindering the club’s efforts to win back the Serie A title and wants him sold before the summer transfer window closes.

Ronaldo joined Juve from Real Madrid in a €100million transfer before the 2018/2019 campaign.

The 36-year-old is now into the final year of his contract.

But Gigli, who was Juve’s president between 2006 and 2009, told SerieANews: “I’ve always been honest: signing Ronaldo was a mistake. It’s impossible to recoup the investment and it will remain that way.

“He’s a great player, but I have to be honest – the sooner he leaves, the better for him and for Juventus.

“I hope that [Juve head coach] Massimiliano Allegri knows how to continue using him like he did against Udinese. That is, with intelligence and when the game is in progress.

“Ronaldo hampers Juventus’ attack. Without him, they can do excellent things in collective terms.”

  • Transfer: Cristiano Ronaldo offered to Man City

Transfer: Cristiano Ronaldo offered to Man City

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has been offered to Manchester City by his agent Jorge Mendes, Corriere dello Sport reports.

The Portuguese, who boasts strong ties to Manchester United, is said to be looking for a way out of Juventus and has seen Paris Saint-Germain back away from a deal following their stunning signing of Lionel Messi.

Mendes is currently in London ‘talking about’ the potential move with City and hopes to provide Ronaldo with an ‘alternative’ to staying at Juventus or moving to PSG.

Ronaldo’s agent is ‘proposing Ronaldo to Manchester City on terms of balance’ but ‘there is a lot of work to be done’.

It is understood that Mansour is ‘thinking about it’ with the Daily Mail claiming Man City could buy Ronaldo for just £25m this summer.

There have also been rumours in Spain that Real Madrid are now thinking about a move to take Ronaldo back to the Bernabeu.

  • Messi to PSG makes no difference to Ronaldo at Juve – Bonucci

Messi to PSG makes no difference to Ronaldo at Juve – Bonucci

Lionel Messi’s imminent switch to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has not had an impact on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Juventus, according to team-mate Leonardo Bonucci.

Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi is expected to complete a move to PSG this week after bringing an end to his 21-year association with FC Barcelona.

French giants PSG have previously been linked with fellow superstar forward Ronaldo, who is now into the final 12 months of his contract with Juventus.

With any path to the Parc des Princes now effectively being cut off by Messi’s arrival, Ronaldo looks set to stay in Turin for at least the next year.

However, Bonucci insists the shock transfer involving Messi has had no bearing on where Ronaldo will play his football this coming season.

“I think that Cristiano would have stayed even if Messi had not gone to PSG,” the Juve defender told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“For us, it’s an added value and I’m sure that this year, more than in past years, he will help us reach all of our goals.”

Since Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid in 2018, only Robert Lewandowski (103) has scored more goals in all competitions than his 73 among players in Europe’s top five leagues.

The Portugal forward’s 83 goal involvements over this period rank fourth behind Lewandowski (121), Messi (106) and Kylian Mbappe (97).

In spite of Ronaldo enjoying another prolific season in front of goal, Juventus finished fourth in Serie A in 2020/2021.

And Bonucci, who played a starring role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, is aiming to win back the title from Inter Milan when the new season begins.

It will begin in a little under two weeks’ time.

“We want to bring the Scudetto back home, there is no point in hiding that,” he said.

“When you play for Juventus, that has to be the objective for the season, just like having a great UEFA Champions League campaign and fighting on all fronts.

“Personally, though, my goal is to continue my form from the Euros, where I played a major role, and do that again with Juventus.”

Ronaldo undergoes medical ahead of fourth season with Juventus

Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo underwent a medical in Turin on Monday ahead of his fourth season with Juventus, along with four other returning Euro 2020 participants.

The 36-year-old Portugal international, who has one-year left on his contract, flew back to northern Italy on Sunday night.

On Monday morning the top scorer in Serie A last season arrived at the team’s medical centre for tests where he was greeted by about one hundred cheering Juve fans and signed autographs.

Also returning were European championship participants Dejan Kulusevski, Matthijs De Ligt, Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot.

Ronaldo was reported to be set to meet coach Massimiliano Allegri and the Juventus management to clarify his future amid speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future had been in doubt after a difficult campaign during which Juventus lost their Serie A crown after nine years, exited the Champions League in the last 16 and only sealed fourth place and elite European football on the final day.

Juventus open the new season at Udinese with Allegri, who signed Ronaldo in 2018, back at the helm two years after his shock departure despite winning five consecutive league titles with the Turin club.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United star Ronaldo has scored 101 goals in total for the club in 133 games.

[See list] Cristiano Ronaldo tops Instagram rich list

Cristiano Ronaldo has topped Instagram’s rich list as the celebrity thought to be able to charge more than anyone else for a sponsored post.

The Juventus forward can charge advertisers $1.6m (£1.2m) per post on his account, according to social media marketing firm Hopper HQ.

Former Real Madrid star Ronaldo knocked wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson off the top spot.

It is the first time Ronaldo has topped the list, which started in 2017.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner boasts 308 million Instagram followers.

Johnson, who stars in the box office juggernaut Fast and Furious film franchise, has 250 million followers and can command just over $1.52m (£1m) per post, while pop star Ariana Grande ($1.51m) places third on the list.

Lionel Messi, who this week became a free agent after his Barcelona contract expired, is the only other sportsperson on the list’s top 10.

The Argentine, who has 224 million followers, can charge up to $1.1m (£798,011) per post, placing him seventh.

  • Euro 2020: I like Ronaldo’s dribbling, shooting skills but he likes my power – Lukaku

Euro 2020: I like Ronaldo’s dribbling, shooting skills but he likes my power – Lukaku

Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku does not mind comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Euro last 16 clash with Portugal, and says he boasts one attribute the football great should envy.

“I will like to have his dribbling skills and his shooting technique. And, he will certainly like my power,” Lukaku told reporters on Friday.

The 28-year-old goes into Sunday’s clash in Seville on three goals at the competition with Ronaldo leading the way on five.

But Lukaku believes he is in the form of his life.

“I think in the last two years I have reached a new level. It’s not just good form any more,” he said.

“Winning the Italian championship with Inter Milan gives me great motivation to win the title with the national team at the European Championship as well.”

Belguim are the top-ranked side in the world and Lukaku says now is the time for the “golden generation” to lift a first major trophy.

“I think the moment has come,” he said.

“When I think back to the 2018 World Cup and the semi-final against France (a 0-1 defeat), we wanted to play beautiful football then. And that ultimately cost us the victory.

“Now we know how we have to play. And Portugal is the best test for that.”

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois meanwhile is not complaining about his team being handed a potential difficult path through the knock-out phase if they are to achieve glory.

“It is a difficult way. But that is also the best way,” Courtois said on Friday at the team camp.

“That’s fantastic. At the World Cup we have also played against Brazil and France.”

Belgium won all three games in qualifying from Group B to be rewarded with a match against a third-place team on Sunday, which turned out to be defending champions Portugal.

And should Belgium dispatch Ronaldo’s title-holders, an Italy side on a by then 31-game unbeaten run will likely wait in the quarter-finals before world champions France in the last four.

Portugal finished third but behind France and Germany, and Courtois believes they are “even stronger” than when they lifted the trophy five years ago.

Courtois, though, is optimistic. “We are also not the easiest opponents,” he said with a smile. “It counts from now. All or nothing.

“We have been given this draw, (and) so we have to go through it.”

What Ronaldo and I discussed at end of Euro clash – Benzema

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was happy to see former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo last night.

Benzema caught up with the Juventus star at the end of France’s 2-2 draw with Portugal in their final Euroa 2020 group game.

Benzema said, “It’s nice to see him again, after the long way we have come up together …

“We played eight-nine years as the front two at Real Madrid, we scored goals, won trophies.

“We exchanged, we wished each other good luck for the future in the club and national team and especially to continue to have fun on the field and continue to make a difference.”

  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s seven records at Euro 2020 so far

Cristiano Ronaldo’s seven records at Euro 2020 so far

Following Portugal’s Group F fixture against France which ended 2-2 and sealed passage into the round of 16 on Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo has now broken seven records at the 2020 UEFA European Championship.

Ronaldo’s brace in the draw between Portugal and France ensured that he equalled the all-time record for the most goals scored for an international side, with both Ronaldo and Iran’s Ali Daei on 109 goals each.

Wednesday’s game against France means Ronaldo is now the player with the record for the most goals at Euros and FIFA World Cups combined with 21 goals after moving beyond legendary German striker Miroslav Klose’s tally of 19 strikes across the two competitions.

Ronaldo is currently top of the Euro 2020 scoring chart with five strikes in three games, giving him the record for the most goals scored in European Championship history with 14 goals.

He is also the player with the most victories in the tournament’s history (12), and the footballer who has scored the most penalties in a single Euros campaign (three).

The other milestones he has achieved in this tournament show the longevity of his career, with Ronaldo becoming the first player in history to feature in five Euro tournaments, as well as the first to score in five Euros, which also saw him become the oldest goalscorer in Portugal’s major tournament history.

Portugal will take on Belgium in the competition’s round of 16, and with the 36-year-old still in the tournament, he is on the brink of breaking three more records.

He only needs one assist and one more goal to have the most assists in the tournament history and to be the sole highest goalscorer in international football, respectively.

He is also just two games shy of Sergio Ramos’ record for the highest-capped European international player, so should Portugal qualify for the competition’s semi-finals, he will claim that milestone too.
