Ronaldo faces possible sanction over COVID-19

Cristiano Ronaldo and other top Juventus players could face legal action for re-joining their national teams despite coronavirus rules after two positive cases at the Italian champions, local health authorities in Turin said on Wednesday.

As well as the Portuguese star, several South Americans including Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, Danilo and Rodrigo Bentancur also left the Juventus team hotel without awaiting test results this week, according to Italian media reports.

“The club itself told us that some players had left the place of isolation and therefore we will notify the competent authority, that is the prosecutor, of what happened,” said Roberto Testi, a director of the health authority in the Piedmont region, quoted by the Ansa news agency.

Messi, Ronaldo absent from Champions League awards shortlist

Superstar duo Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been snubbed by UEFA in the list of nominees for the 2019/2020 Champions League awards.

The awards were introduced in 2016/17 to recognize the season’s best player in each position in Europe’s premier club competition. Both players regularly appeared on the list since its introduction until now.

Messi alongside his football club Barcelona suffered an abysmal 2019/20 season crashing out calamitously from the UEFA champions league. They also lost the La Liga title to arch-rival, Real Madrid towards the end of the season.

Ronaldo on the other hand crashed out of the champions league when no one expected. The forward’s team Juventus lost to Lyon in the Round of 16. However, they were crowned winners of the Seria A title which was not enough for Ronaldo to appear in the UEFA award shortlist.

The shortlist is dominated by Champions League holders Bayern Munich who have seven players nominated.

Players from Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Atlético de Madrid also featured on the list.

The award nominees for the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League are:

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain), Manuel Neuer (Bayern), Jan Oblak (Atlético de Madrid)

Defenders: David Alaba (Bayern), Alphonso Davies (Bayern), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern)

Midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Thomas Müller (Bayern), Thiago Alcántara (Bayern)

Forwards: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern), Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain), Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)

Juventus beat Torino 4-1 in Saturday’s derby, as Cristiano Ronaldo impressed and Gianluigi Buffon made history.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning goal and provided an assist as Juventus eased to a 4-1 derby win over Torino to open up a seven-point lead at the top of Serie A.

Ronaldo was by no means a constant nuisance to the Torino defence, but the Portugal great turned it on when he needed to, setting up Juan Cuadrado before scoring a brilliant goal of his own on Saturday.

Juve made a lightning start and opened the scoring through a fine Paulo Dybala effort, before Ronaldo teed up Cuadrado – who set up the opener – for their second at the Allianz Stadium.

He also played 37 times in Serie B after Juventus were relegated over the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal in 2006 and 17 times in Ligue 1 with Paris St Germain. Saturday’s match was his eighth of the season in Serie A and his first this year.

  • Ronaldo told me he’ll probably end up in America – Nani

The pair have been team-mates at club and international level, having shared the flanks at Manchester United and for Portugal.

Ronaldo has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of the likes of David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry and David Villa in winding down his career in MLS and, now 35, that day may well be approaching.

“A couple of years ago, he told me that he will probably end up in America,” Nani told ESPN.

“It’s not 100 per cent, but probably. There is a chance.”

Difficult for Dybala, Ronaldo to coexist – Sarri

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri admits trying to bring the best out of Paulo Dybala can be a headache.

Sarri hailed the Argentine forward’s skills and explained that this is a pleasant headache for the coaching staff.

“Paulo [Dybala] is a phenomenal player,” he said ahead of the Old Lady’s game against Milan in the Coppa Italia.

“He is a star, although tactically it is difficult to make him coexist with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It is not easy to get them to play together, but with the technical and physical qualities Ronaldo and Dybala have, they can make a difference at any time.

“The team must adapt to these qualities, but it is also true that the area is a bit empty, although it is a pleasant difficulty.”

  • Messi is my favourite player to watch – Ronaldo

Brazil legend, Ronaldo De Lima, has revealed that Lionel Messi is his favourite player to watch.

Ronaldo, in an interview with AS, also left Cristiano Ronaldo out of his list of the top five players that he loves.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are constantly hailed as the two best players in the world, but De Lima has a different opinion.

Instead, he picked Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah, Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard and Paris Saint-Germain duo of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

“Messi, of course, he is number one, it is a talent that we will take 20 or 30 years to see something similar.

“I also like Salah, Hazard, Neymar, that I love watching him play, of course Mbappe,” Ronaldo said.
