Why I want to be better than Messi, Neymar, Lewandowski, others – Ronaldo

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo says he is driven to be the best player in the world by the fear of being surpassed by the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

The 32-year-old Portugal international, who won the Ballon d’Or in January, is a firm favourite to be crowned the world’s finest footballer for the fifth time following Madrid’s triumphs in LaLiga and the Champions League in 2016-17.

Ronaldo and long-time rival Messi have shared the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Ballon d’Or every year since 2008 and another triumph for the former Manchester United man would see him draw level with the Barcelona great on the all-time list.

And Ronaldo admits that the “healthy” competition between the world’s finest forwards, among whom he includes Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain, is what inspires him to strive for success.

To mention one [player] is hard, but the level that I am is like in other sports: Formula One, NBA…The best players always follow the best players,” he told ESPN.

They want to be in the top of the game because the other ones are there. You cannot rest, because the other ones will pass you.

Of course we fight with everyone, with Neymar, with Messi, Lewandowski, Higuain, with the best players in the world. This is not ‘fighting’ but it’s healthy. We fight to be the best.

It’s my motivation: to be better than them, year after year.”

However, the Madeira-born forward says the welfare of his family remains the most important thing in his life.

He explained: “I was with Peter Lim, the owner of Valencia, and he said to me: ‘Cristiano, we have money, fame, everything. I have millions and billions. But the most important thing is family. Keep your family healthy, good. Take care of them’.

You have your private life, your girlfriend, your cars, your houses, your fame, but in the beginning, your family is always with you, in good moments or bad moments.”

  • Claudio Bravo stuns as Chile beat Portugal on penalties to reach final

Claudio Bravo proved the hero for Chile at the end of a keenly contested Confederations Cup semi-final against Portugal.

The Manchester City keeper helped Chile to a 3-0 win on penalties against the European champions, saving all three penalties played by Portugal in the encounter.

Both nations were unable to get a breakthrough after 90 minutes, while Chile came closest to taking the lead right at the end of extra time.

Arturo Vidal saw his shot come off the Portugal post while substitute, Martin Rodriguez‘s follow up hit the crossbar.

Vidal brushed off that miss by smashing in the first penalty, while Bravo saved from Ricardo Quaresma.

Charles Aranguiz scored Chile’s second and Bravo performed his heroics by diving to his right post to save from Joao Moutinho.

Alexis Sanchez scored the third penalty for Chile and yet again, Bravo saved a Portugal penalty kick – this time taken by Nani – to send Chile to the final.

Chile now await the winner of the second semi-final between Germany and Mexico; who clash on Thursday.

The Confederations Cup final will be played in St. Petersburg on Sunday, July 2, preceded by the third-fourth place playoff on the same day.

  • Confed Cup: Portugal draw 2-2 with Mexico

Cristiano Ronaldo brushed off speculation about his Real Madrid future although Portugal conceded a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Mexico at the Confederations Cup on Sunday.

Ronaldo teed up Ricardo Quaresma to fire Portugal ahead in the first half in Kazan, but the goal was cancelled out before the break by Mexico striker Javier Hernandez’s bullet header.

Cedric Soares restored Portugal’s lead on 86 minutes, but Hector Moreno’s stoppage-time header salvaged a point for Mexico in their Group A opener.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo facing £13m tax fraud charge

Spain’s prosecutor’s office in Madrid said on Tuesday it had filed a lawsuit against soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo for allegedly defrauding Spanish authorities of 14.7 million euros between 2011 and 2014.

In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said Ronaldo had knowingly used a “business structure” created in 2010 to hide his income in Spain from his image rights.

The lawsuit is based on a report sent to the prosecutor’s office from Spain’s tax agency.

The Portuguese star became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and in November 2011, and opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in Spain.

Prosecutors said they have until the end of June to decide whether to charge the Real Madrid star, and if he was subsequently found guilty by a court, he would face a prison sentence of at least 15 months, UK’s Telegraph reports.

Justice experts however maintain that is unlikely Ronaldo would go to jail as a first-time offender.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes father to newborn Twins

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid forward, has reportedly become the father of surrogate twins.

According to reports in the Portuguese media, the children, a boy and girl called Eva and Mateo, were born on Thursday.

SIC, the Portuguese TV channel, reported: “Mateo and Eva, those are the names of Cristiano Ronaldo’s twins. The boy and girl were born to a surrogate mum. It’s a secret that Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t yet revealed to the rest of the world.”

Ronaldo, his family and Gestifute, the player’s representatives, are yet to comment on the reports, which were circulated by Portuguese newspapers and websites on Friday.

In March, The Sun claimed that Ronaldo was to become the father of two twin boys, born to a surrogate mother on the west coast of the United States.

Ronaldo is already a father to one son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, who is now six years old. The announcement of the child’s birth in July 2010 was made via Ronaldo’s official social media channels and took the world by surprise.

The 32-year-old, who inspired Madrid to Champions League glory in Cardiff last weekend, is currently dating Georgina Rodriguez, a Spanish model.

  • Messi angry with Barca over Ronaldo’s shine

Messi angry with Barca over Ronaldo’s shine

Lionel Messi isn’t happy with Barcelona with Cristiano Ronaldo on target to win a fifth Ballon d’Or, according to reports.

Despite the Argentine scoring more goals in La Liga (37) than his Real Madrid rival (25), Messi was left with just a Copa del Rey to show for his efforts.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has enjoyed a sensational 12 months that has seen him win La Liga, the European Championship with Portugal, the Ballon d’Or, and the Champions League… twice.

The Portuguese superstar is on course to win a fifth Ballon d’or title that would take him level with Messi and the 29-year-old isn’t happy about it.

Spanish publication Diario Gol claim he is angry with Barca for having such a poor season that has led to Madrid and Ronaldo’s success.
He is said to be concerned with the club’s transfer policy and feels there is a need to improve the training at the club’s famous La Masia academy.

And they suggest Messi is particularly unhappy with former boss Luis Enrique and team-mate Jeremy Mathieu.

Two incidents in particular bothered the forward when it came to Enrique choosing his team selection that included Mathieu.

Back in April, Mathieu started at the back in Barca’s 2-0 defeat to Malaga as they dropped points in the race for the La Liga title.
Three days later Enrique again decided to start Mathieu in the Champions League and they subsequently lost the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Juventus 3-0.

Messi believes those two games were huge turning points in Barca’s season and has proven to be detrimental to his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or later this year.

Mathieu has been widely tipped to leave Barca this summer after failing to impress last season, making just 16 appearances in all competitions.

The 33-year-old has one year left to run on his current contract.

  • Real Madrid beat Juventus, retain Champions League title

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as holders Real Madrid of Spain on Saturday emerged champions of Europe for a record 12th time after overwhelming 10-man Juventus of Italy.

In a high-quality UEFA Champions League final match in Cardiff, the Portugal captain put Real Madrid ahead with a first-time finish from 16 yards before Mario Mandzukic equalised

He scored from just inside the area with a sensational overhead kick beyond Keylor Navas, a goal that should stand out as one of the best.

But Real took control of the game after the interval, with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s deflected shot restoring the lead.

Ronaldo then sealed victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side after poking home from close range following Luka Modric’s cross.

Juventus played the last six minutes with 10 men, after substitute Juan Cuadrado got booked twice inside 18 minutes, before substitute Marco Asensio hit the fourth after Marcelo’s fine pass.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has now won back-to-back Champions League titles since he took charge in January 2016.

In addition to this, the former Real player won the season’s La Liga title.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Juventus, who are the Serie A champions, have now lost five Champions League finals since they last won the competition in 1996.

  • Real Madrid win first La Liga title since 2012

Real Madrid win first La Liga title since 2012

Real Madrid won first La Liga title since 2012 thanks to a final-day 2-0 victory at Malaga on Sunday and in spite of FC Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Eibar.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored early in the game to settle the nerves, latching onto Isco’s through ball to step around Carlos Kameni and tap into an empty net.

Karim Benzema then added their second goal after the break after Kameni had parried Sergio Ramos’ shot.

Real, who had only needed a draw to win the title, now face Juventus in the Champions League final aiming to complete a double

FC Barcelona, who had won the past two titles, came from 2-0 down to beat Eibar 4-2 at the Nou Camp.

But they had also needed Real to slip up if they were going to retain the trophy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Real Madrid finished with 93 points, while FC Barcelona ended with 90 points to stay second.

The result means Zinedine Zidane, in his first full season as Real boss, has recorded another first.

He is the first manager to lead Madrid to the Spanish league title since Jose Mourinho did five years ago.

If Real beat Juventus in Cardiff, they will become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League.

Zidane had won the tournament six months into the job last summer.

  • Ronaldo hits 40th hat-trick of Real Madrid career

Portugal star man, Cristiano Ronaldo has reached yet another landmark by scoring the 40th hat-trick of his Real Madrid career as they claimed the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ronaldo spared the European champions embarrassment against Japanese side Kashima Antlers, who took a 2-1 lead before the Portuguese fired in three goals to claim a 4-2 win after extra time.

Ronaldo has now scored three hat-tricks this season and six in the calendar year, with the J-League challengers the latest team to be put to the sword.

Lifting the Club World Cup for the second time in three years is an outstanding year for Ronaldo, who helped Real Madrid to another Champions League win and then led Portugal to glory in the European Championship.

Real Madrid are four points clear at the top of the La Liga table.

Ronaldo’s hat-tricks for the Real Madrid have come in La Liga, five in the Champions League, against Ajax, Galatasaray, Shakhtar Donetsk, Malmo and Wolfsburg.

  • Messi merits to win Ballon d’Or, better than Ronaldo – Neymar

Messi merits to win Ballon d’Or, better than Ronaldo – Neymar

Barcelona star, Neymar said team-mate and five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, will receive France Football’s 2016 prize next week, and not Cristiano Ronaldo. He said Messi deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo is the overwhelming favourite to win France Football’s 2016 Ballon d’Or prize, which will be announced next week, after helping Madrid win last season’s Champions League.

The 31-year-old also guided Portugal to their Euro 2016 success as he ended the 2015-16 campaign with 51 goals in all competitions for Madrid, while he scored three at the European Championship in France.

Neymar, however, insists his Barca team-mate, Messi should receive the award after seeing the Spanish giants retain their La Liga title.

He told GOL, “I don’t know who will win, for me there is only one who’s the best, that’s Messi.

“Ronaldo is a great player, he’s world class and has been for many years and I respect him.

“But Messi is the one who deserves it, for me.”

Messi has scored 20 goals in all competitions for Barcelona in the current campaign, with nine of those coming in La Liga and 10 in the Champions League.

Ronaldo has netted a league-high 10 goals in La Liga as Madrid top the standings, but has only netted twice in Europe this season.
