Impeachment: Don’t make your deputy a ‘scapegoat,’ lawyer begs Akeredolu

A lawyer, Donald Ayibiowu, has called on Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo not to make his deputy, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a scapegoat over allegation preferred against him by the state house of assembly.

Ayibiowu, an indigene of Okelusi Town in Ondo State, made the call in an open letter he wrote to the governor and a copy made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

The letter titled: “An Open Letter to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, in respect of the Ongoing Needless Charade Called Impeachment of the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Request for Leadership, Restraint, Caution and Focus in the Governance of Ondo State,” was dated Sept. 20.

The state’s lawmakers, during plenary, had alleged that Aiyedatiwa was involved in gross misconduct while in the office as an acting governor.
The assembly wrote a letter to the deputy governor, to respond to the allegation within seven days, signalling the beginning of his impeachment.

Ayibiowu congratulated Akeredolu on his quick recovery and return to Nigeria from his medical treatment abroad.

The Abuja-based legal practitioner said while Akeredolu was away, the state was left near rudderless by a combination of factors ranging from debilitating politicking, rumor mongering, sycophancy, etc.

“One may be tempted to forgive the various dramatis persona in the light of the fact that your unexpected ailment may not have allowed you to give proper directives as to the governance structure type you want in your absence.

“Now that you are back and still recuperating in your Ibadan home, but in the light of your communication to the Ondo State House of Assembly that you have resumed work, one expects that you take charge fully of affairs of our dear Ondo, notwithstanding, the Shenanigans of family, friends and close political associates.
“The shocking news of the on-going pointless impeachment of your deputy, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is the least the people expects from our dear state.

“I dare say that your deputy should not be made the ‘scape goat’ for what the whole world can see glaringly as ‘fuji house of commotion’ in your absence.

“To participate, consent or authorise his removal would mean that you have taken side.
“Your Excellency, your approach should be to declare that ‘all have sinned and come short the glory of God’, because I believe you don’t even know who is right, wrong, true, good or bad,” he said.

According to him, you cannot be seen to want to adopt one sided narration of wrong doing in your absence.

“This move will be misunderstood by most people; it will obstruct proper governance, due administration and it will subject our state to another round of ignoble national odious and negative perception that comes with such exertion’” he advised.
He said if some of the power brokers within the state had scores to settle with Aiyedatiwa, they should rather do so privately and not fiddle with the peace and integrity of the state.

“I wish to place on record that I have been your ardent supporter from your days as NBA President and I don’t know your deputy in person, I have never met him in person or by proxy, neither do I intend to hold brief for him.

“I believe he may have, or harbor gubernatorial ambition after your tenure but I will like to tell you that the deputy governor, as Acting Governor, if he was very desperate, could have sack some of your appointees or could have radically alter the status quo in your absence.

“But he didn’t do any of these things, why not imply that he is a saint, no one his either,” he said.

The lawyer, however, advised that should the governor intend to proceed with the impeachment of his deputy, he should follow the law and respect the sanctity of court processes.

His words: “Mr Governor, the law is settled per the position of the Supreme Court in Inakoju v. Adeleke on the process and procedures for the removal of persons holding the Office of the Governor/Deputy Governor.

“You are a respected law scholar in Nigeria.
“Therefore, should it be politically expedient for your team to proceed with their action, counsel them to follow the law.

“So far, the public have not seen any cogent misconduct or clear-cut financial misappropriation or embezzlement attributable to the deputy governor to warrant this harassment.”

Ayibiowu urged Akeredolu to call the impeachment actors to order, focus on finishing strong, pull his team together, motivate them and concentrate on delivery his campaign promises to the people.

Ondo Assembly to Deputy Governor: Court injunction won’t stop your impeachment

Despite court order, the Ondo State House of Assembly has said it would not be stopped from carrying out its legislative duties of investigating the allegations levelled against the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Court had earlier issued an ex parte order halting the Assembly from impeaching the deputy governor.

But the Assembly said it can’t be stopped by the court order.

It said the impeachment notice served the Deputy Governor outlined 14 specific allegations of gross misconduct which he is required to respond within 7 days from the day of being served.

The allegations encompassed financial mismanagement, misuse of authority with potential harm to the Ondo state government, and publicized statements in the print media that tarnished the Governor’s reputation.

Speaker of the Ondo Assembly, Oladiji Olamide Adesanmi, in a statement issued Tuesday evening, September 26, said the Assembly would strictly follow due process of law as outlined in Section 188(1) – (9) of the Constitution.

According to him, “The House is not unaware of media reports that His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, has rushed to Court to stop the impeachment process. Media reports even claim he has secured an injunction from a certain Judge of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to halt the process.

“The House is shocked that rather than wait to be served with notice of the allegation of gross misconduct, and react to same as required by the Constitution, the Deputy Governor has been running from pillar to post and filing multiple suits in both at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court and the Ondo State High Courts in a bid to stop the legislative process.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House is fully conscious of Section 188 (10) of the Constitution which clearly states that “No proceedings or determination of the panel or of the House of Assembly or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court.

“The House has directed its team of Lawyers to investigate the purported injunction secured by the Deputy Governor and report any judicial officer who might have abused his office in granting the unconstitutional ex-parte injunction to the appropriate institution for necessary disciplinary action.

“In conclusion, the House wishes to assure the general public that it would proceed with the legislative process to a logical conclusion, but in doing so, will strictly follow the Constitutional procedures. The House will not abdicate or compromise its sacred constitutional duty to hold elected public officers accountable, particularly where there are prima facie serious allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against the Deputy Governor in this case.”

Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the wife of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, on Thursday, confirmed that her husband has returned to Nigeria.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu, in a message on her Facebook page, posted a picture of Akeredolu in a private jet on Thursday with the caption “homebound.”

This is coming after about three months of medical leave in Germany.

Akeredolu had begun the medical leave in June and it was extended indefinitely by the state House of Assembly in July.

He after that transferred power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in line with constitutional provisions.

Ondo Govt clarifies Akeredolu’s health status amid viral video of return

Amidst circulating reports and a viral video depicting Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s return to Nigeria following a prolonged medical leave abroad, the Ondo State government has stepped forward to provide clarity.

The viral video in question showed the governor disembarking from a helicopter, appearing healthy and vigorous.

However, the governor’s spokesperson Richard Olatunde, said in a  statement on Sunday that the footage was taken during the 2023 presidential election campaign.

Olatunde affirmed that Governor Akeredolu is currently still recovering abroad and thanked citizens of Ondo State and well-wishers both within and outside the country for their unwavering support and prayers.

“The video in question, which is circulating, was captured during the Governor’s campaign tour in preparation for the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“While we acknowledge the eagerness of the people of the state, as well as supporters and well-wishers from both within and outside the country, to have the Governor back, we want to clarify that Governor Akeredolu is currently in Germany, focused on his full recovery,” Olatunde said.

He added that the Governor would return to the country soon to continue the execution of his administration’s Redeemed agenda and continue to provide impactful governance.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Governor Akeredolu had requested an extension of his one month medical leave which he embarked upon since June 5.

The governor’s ongoing health needs prompted him to transmit a letter to the Ondo State House of Assembly, seeking an extension.

Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly Olamide Oladiji, noted: “Following Doctor’s advice on the need to take adequate rest after recuperating, Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN, CON, has forwarded the letter of extension on medical leave to the Ondo State House of Assembly.”

Oladiji said the governor’s action was in line with section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ( as amended).

He added that Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa would continue to act as governor until there is a written declaration to the contrary.

APC National Secretary reveals when Akeredolu will resume

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Iyiola Omisore, says he is optimistic that Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, will soon return to the state to continue attending to the developmental needs of the people.

Omisore said this on Friday in Akure in what he called “solidarity visit” to Ondo State.

He assured the government and people of the state that there should be no need for alarm, but prayers for Gov. Akeredolu, after sufficient rest.

Omisore met with the Acting Governor, Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa, State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, members of the State Working Committee, and Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu.

Others are; Chief of Staff, Chief Gbenga Ale, Members of the House of Assembly, Commissioners, and other top government officials.

Omisore said the national secretariat regretted the recent twist and expressed the best wishes and prayers of the National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, for the governor.

He said that at no time did the National Chairman said the governor was incapacitated, lamenting that some section of the press only opted to be mischievous and reported “what they feel makes news”.

The visit, he explained, was meant to dispel the misapprehension of the sincere and noble statement, and put the record straight.

“Mr chairman only urged people to pray for the quick recovery of your governor; not on account of being incapacitated.

“Our visit, therefore, is to reinforce the position of the national secretariat that we only prayed for the quick recovery of Akeredolu and not otherwise,” he stressed.

Omisore further assured them that the national secretariat was on the same page with the state, and would always offer support, when necessary.

Earlier, the State Party Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, had dismissed the insinuation that the state chapter was in crisis.

Adetimehin insisted that the party was as united as ever, under the leadership of Akeredolu.

He explained that the state was still savouring its enviable contributions to the party’s victory at the last presidential election, and, therefore, had no place for bickerings.

Responding, the Acting Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, expressed appreciation to the team for the solidarity visit.

Aiyedatiwa lamented unprofessional twisting of facts by some members of the press who opted for outright falsehood.

He called on journalists to always cross-check  when in doubt to avoid embarrassing and misleading people.

The National Secretary was accompanied by the Deputy National Secretary, Mr Festus Fuanter, National Vice Chairman (North Central), Bawa Muazu, and National Vice Chairman (South-West), Mr Isaacs Kekemeke.

Adamu debunks comment on Akeredolu’s health status, says statement was misrepresented

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has debunked a report credited to the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is in a state of extreme incapacity, and hospitalised.

The party in a statement issued by Iyiola Omisore, the National Secretary on Tuesday, said the headline, “Akeredolu in state of extreme incapacity, hospitalised”, bore a tinge of the usual mischievous, wicked and insensitive reportage, sponsored by desperate politicians.

    The statement reads:
“The attention of the national headquarters of ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS has been drawn to a report, credited to the National Chairman; Senator Abdullahi Adamu, in the 11th July, 2023.

” The headline, “Akeredolu in state of extreme incapacity, hospitalised”, bore a tinge of the usual mischievous, wicked and insensitive reportage, sponsored by desperate politicians.

“The National Chairman was indeed excited at the reports on the rate of recovery of the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, and urged all those present at the meeting to pray for his quick return.

“It, therefore, smacks of mischief and unabashed abandonment of professional ethics for a reporter to present this gross misrepresentation, a mischievous twist, as news. At no time did the National Chairman mention that the Governor was in a state of “extreme incapacity” in the meeting of 10th July 2023 or anytime for that matter.

“He is, evidently, not in any critical state that should warrant this clearly reprehensible conduct as he still sent a post to the Executive Council Committee platform yesterday.

” Members of the public are advised to ignore this news as the contents therein exist in the realm of the imagination of workers of iniquity.

” Mr. Governor is NOT incapacitated. He will return to his duty as soon as the doctors certify him fully fit to do so”, he Said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Speaker of the House, Mr Olamide Oladiji made the disclosure on Monday.

In a statement in Akure, Oladiji explained that the Governor’s action was in line with Section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He stated that the Governor’s request for the extension of his medical leave followed his doctor’s advice to take adequate rest in order to recuperate.

The Speaker further stated that the letter provides that Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the State Deputy Governor, would continue to act as Governor until there was a written declaration stating otherwise.

The Speaker expressed appreciation to God for the recovery of the Governor, adding that he was optimistic that Akeredolu would soon resume his duties.

Recall that Akeredolu had on June 5 written to the Assembly informing it of his intention to proceed on medical leave, which was to end on July 6.

Installation of 5 new Ijaw kings in Ondo excites INC

Ijaw National Congress (INC), on Sunday, commended Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State for recognising and installing five additional Ijaw kings in Arogbo-Ijaw kingdom, Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

The State government had, on Thursday, presented staff of office to the new kings for Ijaw communities.

President of INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, gave the commendation in an interview in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Okaba, who was reacting to the installation of five new kings, applauded Akeredolu for his inclusive governance style and even spread of development projects.

He congratulated the newly-installed kings, urging them to keep the Ijaw flag flying by propagating and preserving its revered culture in a manner reflective of the multi-ethnic nature of the state.

Okaba said with his action, Akeredolu had written his name in gold and shown exemplary leadership in recognising and harnessing the ethic diversity of the state for peaceful co-existence.

According to him, the entire Niger Delta region needs such a leadership approach.

“Ijaw National Congress is very pleased with Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu for recognising and elevating five new Ijaw kingship stools in Ondo and installation of five new Ijaw kings.

“We express the appreciation of all Ijaws in Nigeria and in the Diaspora to the governor.

“This development has given a sense of belonging to all Ijaws in the Niger Delta region and we feel a sense of duty to express our gratitude to the act of justice and equity to the Ijaws.

“We therefore, call on Edo and Akwa Ibom governors to borrow a leaf from Ondo State governor and uplift the status of Ijaws in their respective states.

“The ancestral domains of the Ijaws are endowed with oil and gas reserves, which provide derivation revenue being used to develop other parts of the states.

“Authoritative historical, archaeological and ethnographic facts have shown that the Ijaw people are the oldest aboriginal settlers in the Niger Delta region and must be accorded respect in the states and local government areas they have been  arbitrarily balkanised into.

“INC decries all acts of land grabbing, marginalisation, denial and distortion of the Ijaw cultural heritage under any guise which are ongoing in some states in the region,” Okaba said.

Gov Akeredolu declares work-free day for PVC collection

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has declared Tuesday, Jan. 24 as work-free day to enable eligible voters yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so.

INEC had stated on Thursday in Akure that more than 386,000 PVCs were awaiting collection in Ondo State.

Mrs Olufunmike Segun-Osifeso, head of INEC’s Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Organisations in Ondo State said 1,686,082 PVCs out of the 2,072,092 PVCs received from Abuja had been collected.

That left 386,010 cards yet to be collected.

Segun-Osifeso said those who failed to collect their cards at the ward level by Sunday would have to go to INEC offices at local government secretariats to collect them.

Akeredolu’s media aide, Mr Richard Olatunde, stated in Akure on Saturday that the work-free day would avail those yet to collect their PVCs to go and collect them at INEC offices at local government secretariats.

The governor urged civil servants, private sector workers, artisans and other potential voters to seize the opportunity to collect the PVCs to be able to exercise their franchise at the forthcoming elections.

“The importance of the forthcoming elections cannot be overemphasised. There is an urgent need for us to address the low rate of PVC collection in the Southwest.

“Beyond partisan lines, it is imperative that our people understand that the PVC is their licence to enthrone their desired political leadership.

“We are constrained to take this decision to enable our people to take this advantage and collect their PVCs. It’s important that we all exercise our civic responsibilities.

“All political appointees and other government functionaries are also directed to return to their local governments and wards to encourage people to collect their PVCs,’’ Olatunde stated.

  • JUST IN: Gov Akeredolu suspends Governing Council Chairman of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic

JUST IN: Gov Akeredolu suspends Governing Council Chairman of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has suspended the Chairman of the Governing Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Mr. Banji Alabi.

The suspension followed the report of the Visitation Panel that Alabi refused to honour its invitation on several occasions.

The Governor announced the suspension while receiving the report of the 7-member Visitation Panel to the Polytechnic.

According to the Governor, “the Chairman stands suspended until I hear from him.”

Submitting the Panel report on Thursday at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka Akure, the Chairman, Professor Olabode Kolade Koriko, appreciated Governor Akeredolu for finding it necessary to constitute the Panel.

Prof. Koriko applauded Governor Akeredolu for releasing about N1.6bn bailout to the Polytechnic, adding that the commitment of the Governor to reposition the Polytechnic and restore its lost glory is commendable.

The Chairman revealed that the Panel in the course of its assignment, held meetings and had interactions with relevant stakeholders from the Polytechnic and the host community at different locations in Owo before arriving at its recommendations.

“Rufus Giwa Polytechnic until recently remains a model of institution in the South-West over the year, however, poor management of human and material resources appears to have eroded the gains of the past and turned the once famous citadel of learning that has produced very successful men and women in the society to a shadow of its self.

“Your decision to set up the Visitation Panel at this auspicious moment could therefore not have come at a better time and is no doubt altruistic. It is expected that at the end, your desire to emplace probity and accountability in the management of this great citadel of learning would be realized.

“The assignment which spanned a period of 3 months, commenced with the inauguration of the Visitation Panel by your good self on 21st September, 2022.

“The Panel in the course of the exercise met at different locations in Owo and Akure during the three months duration of its assignment, critically perused all the items listed in the 7-point Terms of Reference , met with the relevant stakeholders, collected Memoranda from Staff, students and the Community, executed an extensive verification of staff and accounts of the Polytechnic, reviewed the laws of the Polytechnic, critically analyzed the content of the submitted Memoranda, other materials and oral evidence available to it to arrive at its recommendations.

“The Panel also had extensive interaction and meetings with Principal Officers of the Polytechnic, union bodies, Chiefs of the host community, and of course the petitioners who were often invited to the Panel sitting for interrogation while a comprehensive inspection of facilities of the Polytechnic (including buildings, vehicles, ventures etc) diligently executed”, the chairman stressed.

Receiving the report, Governor Akeredolu appreciated all members of the Panel for their labour, with a promise to look into the report.

Governor Akeredolu, who expressed worry over what he called downward slide being observed in the Polytechnic, said the report would guide government on what to do.

“Coincidentally, I am from Owo, I was inundated with several complaints here and there. A number of them I am not able to solve. I asked questions and got answers that probably were not correct, I can’t understand.

“I got information that several people have been recruited and when I ask, they will say no. Then why is your wages going up? Why can’t you pay?

“We have intervened on one or two occasions and we gave money with specific instruction to pay salaries. At the end of the day you cannot still complete salary payment. I’m sure your report will contain this.

“Management, yes, there might be some problems with human and material resources but as I always say when they come and meet me, I know from verifiable facts that the Rector has attracted enormous funding to that place either through TETFUND or others, because of his connection. You can’t take that away from him”, Akeredolu explained.

The Governor also declared that it has become more desirable now to turn the Polytechnic to university, noting that there is no going back.

He stressed that the Polytechnic has all it takes in terms of facilities to become a university.
