US election: ALL you need to know about VP Kamala Harris running mate, a former teacher

Kamala Harris has chosen Governor Tim Walz, a former school teacher and member of Congress, as her vice-presidential nominee.

The two-term Democratic governor was tapped by U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris to be her presidential campaign running mate on Tuesday, ending an accelerated search for a vice-presidential candidate as the race to the White House heats up.

He is viewed as somebody who can win over rural and working-class voters, particularly in crucial Midwestern US states.

The choice of Walz, 60, came after he quickly emerged as a leading messenger for Democrats, portraying liberal policy positions in a common-sense manner that may appeal to Midwestern voters whose support Harris needs to win the presidency.

Mr. Walz later appeared with Ms. Harris later on Tuesday at a campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before the pair begin a five-day tour of other key battleground states.

They will also speak at the Democratic National Convention later this month, from 19 to 22 August in Chicago, when the Harris-Walz ticket will be made formal.

Below are a few things to know about Tim Walz:
He’s also credited as the first to label Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance as “weird,” which has caught fire among the Harris campaign and Democrats in general.
“He’s a pretty safe choice,” said Matthew Lebo, a political science professor at Western University who studies American politics.

“He’s very down to earth and can explain liberal values and what the government’s priorities should be in a way that talks about the social safety net and helping people build their lives, as opposed to ‘we’re taxing you more.’”
Walz’s state also shares a 885-kilometer border with Canada — and a trade economy worth billions of dollars every year.

Walz was born in West Point, Neb., a community of about 3,500 people northwest of Omaha. Walz joined the Army National Guard and became a teacher in Nebraska.

He and his wife Gwen moved to Mankato in southern Minnesota in the 1990s, where he continued his teaching career and coached high school football.
Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard before retiring from a field artillery battalion in 2005 as a command sergeant major, one of the military’s highest enlisted ranks.
He entered politics in 2006 by defeating a six-term Republican incumbent, Gil Gutknecht, for a seat in the U.S. Congress, first displaying his ability to connect with conservative voters. He also capitalized on anger towards then-president George W. Bush and the Iraq War.
During his own six terms in the House of Representatives, Walz became known as a champion of veterans issues. He won praise for helping to reach a bipartisan consensus for veterans’ health and education benefits during Trump’s divisive term.
When he successfully ran for the Minnesota governorship in 2018, he portrayed Democratic ideals like union organizing, workers’ rights, and a higher minimum wage in ways that appealed to rural middle-class voters who otherwise vote Republican.
“He’s a hunter but understands the sense of gun laws. He is liberal in terms of a wider social safety net.”

As governor, Walz has sought to further deepen economic ties with Canada, which is the state’s largest trading partner by far.
In June, Walz traveled to Canada with an economic and agricultural delegation that sought to promote their state as a trade and investment destination. Canada and Minnesota each have more than 60 companies operating within each other’s borders, employing thousands of local workers.
Walz met with Ontario Premier Doug Ford at Queen’s Park during the trip, and Ford highlighted the “billions of dollars in two-way trade” between their economies and the need to “protect and grow” those ties

US election: VP Kamala Harris set to announce running mate

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democratic rising star, is considered the favourite to join Harris as her vice-presidential pick, ahead of several other state governors, a US senator and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

US media reported Monday that Harris had narrowed one of the most consequential choices of her political career to Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and would likely make her decision public in a video announcement.

Less than a day before their swing state journey, Harris was maintaining the suspense about her running mate, telling supporters in a text message Monday evening that “I have not made my decision yet.”

Harris, 59, and her newly minted deputy will hold a rally Tuesday at Temple University in Philadelphia before hitting Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, Arizona on Friday and Nevada on Saturday.

She was also intending to hold events in battlegrounds North Carolina on Thursday and Georgia on Friday, but local media outlets reported that a tropical storm battering southeastern states had forced their postponement. There was no response from the Harris campaign on a request for details.

Shapiro is enormously popular in Pennsylvania — the largest of the six or seven swing states that have decided recent US elections — and is seen as giving Harris a boost in what is considered must-win real estate for Democrats and Republicans alike.

The 51-year-old would be the country’s first Jewish vice president, adding to the diversity of a ticket already boasting what would be the only woman ever sent to the Oval Office.

Shapiro’s backers have argued in any case that the criticism is rooted in anti-Semitism, and many analysts believe his moderate profile gains him more votes from the centre than it loses on the progressive fringe.

Walz, a 60-year-old former National Guard officer who exudes folksy charm, would bring a rural Midwestern perspective to the ticket but is seen as being from the liberal wing of the party.

He has been making a name for himself as one of the Democrats’ most effective communicators in recent weeks, with his criticism of Trump and running mate J.D. Vance as “weird” gaining enormous traction.

Other less likely contenders include Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a former astronaut and war veteran; Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a longstanding friend of Harris; and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Harris threw her hat in the ring and began her search for a running mate after 81-year-old Biden exited the race on July 21.

He had been facing mounting concerns over his low popularity ratings and advanced years, and Trump was surging after surviving an assassination attempt and presiding over a united party at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Multiple recent polls have shown Harris’s rise continuing unabated ever since, with a Morning Consult survey notably placing her four points ahead of Trump nationally, 48 to 44 per cent.

But a new CBS News poll found Harris’s popularity among Black voters some way behind Biden’s score as he defeated Trump in 2020, prompting some senior Democrats to caution against complacency.

“She has a lot of momentum, but if you do look at the polling, this is still a really tight race,” Barack Obama’s one-time strategist David Axelrod told political outlet The Hill. “This is going to be a hard fight for either side.”

US Election: Trump announces running mate

Former President Donald Trump has selected 39-year-old Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate for the upcoming US general election.

Trump made this high-stakes announcement on Monday at the start of the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform.

Trump emphasized that Vance, while campaigning, “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”

According to Fox News, Vance hails from Ohio, a former battleground state that Trump comfortably won in both the 2016 and 2020 elections.

The senator’s selection is expected to bolster Trump’s appeal among working-class voters.

CAN denies Bishops at Shettima’s unveiling, says they are fake

The Christian Association of Nigeria  (CAN)  has frowned at the presence of Bishops at the unveiling ceremony of Kashim Shettima as All Progressive Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate in Abuja today.

CAN dissociate itself from Bishops who attended the unveiling of Bola Tinubu and  Kashim Shettima, adding that they were desperados who went for their aggrandizement.

The organization said that although the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was free to “hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them”, that effort would only add to their many ropes but would not change the need for fairness and justice.

The Vice President of CAN (19 Northern States and Abuja) and its chairman in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, said this in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

He said, “The people we saw at the unveiling of Shettima paraded as Bishops are people who did not have enough time to learn how to wear Bishop garments. Take a closer look at their photo and you will see another Nollywood movie.

“CAN wonders why the desperation. First, a story was out claiming to have come from the Chairman of CAN Borno state only to be refuted. Secondly, there was another lie that BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and his running mate were on their way to meet CAN President one night. A meeting that was not true and was on a night that the CAN President was in Alabama USA attending the Baptist World Alliance Conference of which he is the Vice President.

“Another desperation story was that they met Papa Adeboye which the RCCG later refuted. If Christians are not important why the desperation?

“BAT is free to hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them. An effort that will only add to their many ropes when the political exercise is over but will not change the need for fairness and justice that CAN is calling for.

“CAN appreciate that we are in a democracy, no need to do funny and dubious things just to prove a point because it will in the end bounce back. BAT team should simply do what is right and stop the drama.”

CAN condemns Tinubu’s choice of Muslim running mate

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned the selection of former governor of Borno state, Kashim Shettima, as the running mate to the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Ahmed Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls Tinubu had during a visit to the president, in Daura, on Sunday, announced Shettima, a Muslim, as his running mate.

Tinubu announced Shettima, on Sunday, as his running mate, in Daura, Katsina state shortly after paying a Sallah visit to President Muhammadu Buhari. Shettima is a Senator representing Borno Central District in the nation’s Upper Chamber. He was a two-term governor in Borno state.

However, Tinubu’s announcement came amidst protests from the leadership of various Christian bodies in Nigeria, especially the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Catholic Bishops.

CAN’s Spokesperson, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, said Nigerians should be ready to face the consequences of their actions if they endorsed and vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“We knew this was what he was going to do and we have warned against it. It is up to Nigerians to decide on what they want.

“You are all alive when we warned Buhari not to allow Muslims to dominate the security architecture of the country and he did it. I think we can see the way the criminals are operating with impunity.

“So, if Tinubu says he is opting for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a polarised country like ours, if Nigerians endorse him and vote for him, whatever happens, Nigerians will face it.

“We knew this was what he was going to do and we had warned against it. It is up to Nigerians to decide on what they want.

Similarly, the Christ Global Network Presbyter, Bishop Taiwo Akinola and the General Overseer of Rhema Christian Church and Towers International with headquarters in Sango Otta in Ogun State had disagreed with the same faith ticket for 2023 general elections despite assurances of fairness to all, describing it as unhealthy for today’s Nigeria.

He said this during a media briefing held alongside the New Wine Fire Conference 2022 with the theme: “Flowing In The Messianic Anointing” explaining that the same faith ticket, particularly at the presidency would further entrench national division.

Bishop Akinola advised all political parties to jettison all mono faith permutation which is capable of fueling a further cry against the real or perceived allegation of an islamization agenda and exacerbating the country’s present religious crisis.

Borno CAN chairman, Naga endorses Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate

The chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State chapter, Bishop Mohammed Naga, has hailed the selection of the former governor of the state, Kashim Shettima, as the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressice congress (APC) for 2023 general election.

Naga said Shettima is not a religious bigot, adding that he has nothing to fear about him.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu has chosen Shettima as his running mate ahead of next year’s general election.

Reacting to the announcement, Naga, in a statement on Monday, said he was happy Tinubu made his mind known to the general public in the person of his preferred running mate, Shettima.

Naga’s statement read in part, “My brothers, those who are not from Borno State may not know, but you and I know better.

“Gov. Shettima, in the history of Borno State, is the only Governor that has sponsored the highest number of Christian Pilgrims every year since 2011.

“I am speaking boldly without fear or favour because as CAN Chairman, I don’t receive salary or kobo from the Government or any institution, but the facts need to be told.

“For example, when Gwoza people were driven from their ancestral homes, they fled to Maiduguri, and the Governor personally came to CAN Centre in Jerusalem ward two times in June and July 2014. He gave N10 million for their upkeep at first instance, but the victims weren’t many. By the end of October 2014, the IDPs from Gwoza increased to 42,000 in that camp alone. Governor Shettima came again and gave another N10 million.

“He also gave an additional N5 million to Christians from Borno who fled to Cameroon to be returned home.

“Sincerely speaking, as a Christian and a preacher, absolutely I have nothing to fear about Asiwaju’s picking a Muslim as his running mate because he is not a religious bigot and I am happy he has made his mind known to the public in the person of his preferred running mate.

“Seeing another presidential candidate applauding him is a plus for him and supporters of Asiwaju. Congratulations to the awaiting president and vice president.”

Tinubu has settled for a Muslim running mate – says Source

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) Bola Tinubu, has reportedly chosen a Muslim running mate.

A highly-competent source in the Tinubu Campaign Organisation who requested anonymity confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.

The source said Tinubu would make the name of the candidate public this week.

“The vice-presidential nominee may most likely be a former governor and senator from the Northeast part of Nigeria.

“The person is also by accident of birth a Muslim, confirming what Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said on Saturday that Tinubu had settled for a Muslim-Muslim ticket,’’ the source said.

The source added that in picking the running mate, Tinubu was not thinking about religion, but about the competence, exposure, and intellectual depth of the candidate.

“The considerations given for the choice of a running mate were dictated by the need to choose an individual capable of working with the presidential candidate to take Nigeria to greater heights,’’ the source said

Tinubu is scheduled to pay Sallah homage to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Daura, Katsina, on Sunday to brief him on his chosen running mate.

The former two-term Lagos State governor won APC’s presidential ticket at the party’s June 8 special national convention and presidential primary election.

He earlier chose Ibrahim Kabiru Masari, as a placeholder for the vice-presidential slot.

Tinubu was away in France from June 27 on a short vacation during which he held some strategic meetings. He returned to Nigeria on Saturday early enough for Sallah festivities.

Tinubu’s running mate is expected to be announced during the week.
