Russia 2018: How the five favourites are shaping up a month from the World Cup

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia starting in a month, here are five favourites team – who between them have won 13 of the last 20 tournaments — are shaping up:

    – Germany –

Germany’s build-up has been marred by uncertainty as to the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The 32-year-old Bayern Munich man has been on the sidelines since suffering a fractured foot in September.

“I do not think it’s imaginable that I go into such a tournament without match practice,” Neuer admitted last week. His natural replacement is the excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona.

Low has a core of the team that won the 2014 title, and can also call on the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner. Marco Reus will hope to be fit this time too.

After winning all their qualifiers, Germany have failed to win recent friendlies against England, France, Spain and Brazil. Nevertheless, they are the world’s top-ranked side and almost always deliver at the World Cup.

    – Brazil –

In 2014, Brazil’s hopes rested on the shoulders of Neymar, and the back injury he suffered in the quarter-final win over Colombia sparked the meltdown which led to the 7-1 humiliation against Germany in the semis.

Fast forward four years and the nation is again sweating on his fitness. The world’s most expensive player is recovering from a foot injury suffered playing for Paris Saint-Germain in February.

The absence of his PSG colleague Dani Alves with a knee injury is a huge blow too, but Brazil still look far better now under Tite than they did in 2014.

They comfortably topped South American qualifying and there is greater strength in depth. Add to that a kind-looking draw, and Brazil have a genuine chance of a sixth title.

    – Spain –

After poor showings in their last two major tournaments under Vicente del Bosque, Spain are on the up again under his successor Julen Lopetegui.

The former goalkeeper has yet to lose a game in charge, with Spain dropping just two points in qualifying and recently destroying Argentina 6-1 in a friendly.

With Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique still there in front of David de Gea, they have one of the best defences in the business. Further forward, it will be difficult to stop the likes of David Silva and Isco in full flow, and then there is Andres Iniesta.

“We are delighted that he keeps playing this well and are excited about him keeping it up at the World Cup,” Lopetegui recently told FIFA.com.

    – France –

France fell short on home soil at Euro 2016, losing in extra time to Portugal in the final. That increases the pressure on coach Didier Deschamps to deliver this time with a gifted squad.

Deschamps’ team won their qualifying group despite some unconvincing performances, including a goalless home draw with Luxembourg, and the coach has his critics.

To silence them he needs to find the right system to bring the best out of his squad, especially in attack, where Antoine Griezmann is the main man but teen sensation Kylian Mbappe will be one to watch too. This is also surely the stage for Paul Pogba to really step up.

    – Argentina –

After their defeat in the 2014 final, this is Lionel Messi’s big chance to finally get his hands on the trophy.

However, Messi only rescued a shambolic qualifying campaign by scoring a vital hat-trick in Ecuador in the last game to take the team to Russia. There are huge doubts about the rest of Jorge Sampaoli’s squad, and the coach recently said Messi “can carry the team on his shoulders.”

But Sampaoli must also get the best out of the many undoubted talents at his disposal, including Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala, to help his side’s chances of reaching the latter stages.

Russia 2018: No injury scare in Super Eagles – Media Officer

With 31 days to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Super Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, says there is no need to panic over injuries in the team.

Nigeria is pitted against Argentina, Croatia and Iceland in the Mundial’s Group D.

Ibitoye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos that some of the players that cupped injuries were recovering and have resumed training.

“We have a month and a few days to the World Cup. Some players like Leon Balogun, Ogenyi Onazi, Wilfred Ndidi and Tyron Ebue are recovering from injuries and have started training.

“Balogun and Onazi have started playing for their clubs.

“Generally speaking, we have nothing to worry about in terms of our boys because those who are recovering are being well monitored and the reports from the medical team are very positive,’’ he said.

According to Ibitoye, reports from the medical team indicates that the players will be 100 per cent fit before the World Cup begins.

“We have three more games to play before the World Cup. For the first time in a long while, we have played six friendly games, each to achieve a purpose in team building and in helping us to prepare for the teams we will face at the World cup,’’ he said.

The Eagles spokesman said that from the first international friendly against Argentina to the matches against Poland, Serbia and the remaining ones to be played against DR Congo, England and Czech Republic, were done for reasons.

Ibitoye said: “All these games are well planned. They have something to achieve in the team. Everything is going perfectly well. I think it is kudos to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“The board and secretariat of the NFF have worked so hard to be able to get all these together,’’ he said.

He commended Coach Gernot Rohr and his crew for planning and monitoring the players in their clubs.

He said that the technical crew had worked hard to prepare the team mentally and physically, especially sending fitness coaches to work with players recovering from injury and prepare them for the opposition.

“As we speak, the coaches are putting finishing touches to the provisional list from which our final squad for the World Cup will be released.

“I know that a lot of extensive work has been done. I will not be surprised if Rohr sticks with those he has been working with.

“I will also not be surprised if maybe, one or two players based on what they are doing presently and their shape now are also able to break into the World Cup squad.

“ Any of these scenarios is a possibility,’’ Ibitoye said.

  • Nigeria will succeed in Russia – Joseph Yobo

Nigeria will succeed in Russia – Joseph Yobo

Ex-Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, believes the current squad of the National team will succeed in the forthcoming FIFA world Cup in Russia.

Yobo spoke on the sidelines of a media parley organised by Multichoice Nigeria on Thursday to unfold its plans to bring the world soccer fiesta to the homes of Nigerians.

He said that the team should not be intimidated by others in their group — Croatia, Argentina and Iceland.

The former Everton defender commended the effort of the Coach, Gernot Rohr, in bringing together gifted players to fight for jerseys ahead of the mundial.

Yobo said he was of the opinion that the challenge in the goalkeeping aspect would be overcome and the team would do the nation proud in Russia.

He commended DStv for yet again bringing their quality to bear as they prepare to showcase the greatest football fiesta to Nigerians.

“It feels good to see that they want everybody to be a part of the football show by bringing it to their homes.

“The reduced tariffs would afford their customers to enjoy and be a part of history, and I believe the current squad of the Super Eagles would excel in Russia,” Yobo said.

  • Russia 2018: Win World Cup, get $24m bonus – NFF tells Super Eagles

Russia 2018: Win World Cup, get $24m bonus – NFF tells Super Eagles

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has said that the Super Eagles players stand the chance of pocketing 24 million dollars if they play in the final of the 2018 World Cup.

The World Cup will hold from June 14 to July 15 in Russia.

Pinnick told journalists in Abuja on Wednesday that the money was part of the agreement reached with the players to share 50-50, whatever would accrues to the country if they get to the final and lift the trophy.

I don’t put players under pressure. Pressure can be put on them unconsciously because we are creating enabling environment for them. If for example we don’t have money to prepare them, they can now relax but now, we have given them everything upfront and they should deliver. If today they get to the final, the World Cup money will be shared 50-50 between the team and the NFF.

Winning the final is 48 million dollars, it means the team will get 24 million dollars and the football house will take the remaining 24 million dollars,” Mr Pinnick said.

He also said the adequate preparation including grade A friendly matches have been secured with England and Czech Republic to ensure the team do well at the World Cup.

The NFF boss further said that the glass house had already secured 2.8 million dollars to pay the players allowances and bonuses during the mundial.

We are ready to play against England on June 2 in London in an international friendly. We had a conclusive meeting with the England FA.

After the England match, we will play Czech Republic and from there we move to Russia. As it is everything is going on very well.

For the world cup, I don’t think we have any problem, I am in touch with the technical committee. It is the desire of every Nigerian to see the Super Eagles do well at the World Cup.”

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support for the NFF and the Super Eagles, and assured that they would not let him down in Russia.

  • It’s too late to be experimenting with players for Russia 2018, Gaiya advises Rohr

Godfrey Gaiya, a former Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Sports, says it is too late for Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to be experimenting with players.

Gaiya, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja on the Super Eagles’ 0-2 loss to Serbia in London on Tuesday, said time was too short for the coach to be doing that.

The match which was part of the team’s preparations ahead of the World Cup scheduled for June.

Gaiya who was obviously not impressed with the team’s selection for the match said the team should retain its earlier squad of players used during the World Cup qualifiers.

“If you are preparing for a tournament like the World Cup, you cannot start experimenting at this stage. I thought by now we should have gotten the basic structure, the basic nucleus for the team.

“These friendlies are supposed to be an avenue to try out patterns and see how prepared we are.

“I was not really happy with the selection yesterday, because there was an attempt to bring in players who have not won any national senior team call-up before.

“I thought we should concentrate on the players we know, the ones used during the qualifiers, and also not use limited international windows to test players.

“The tournament is in just over two months from now. We should be concentrate more on building and not experimenting,’’ he said.

Gaiya also advised that Ikechukwu Ezenwa be retained in goal in place of Francis Uzoho.

“Before now the goalkeeping department has been a problem for the team.

“But from his game yesterday, Uzoho still has a long way to go. He is not there yet and at the moment we cannot trust him in goal.

“Though he is a home-based player, Ezenwa should be allowed the opportunity. He has got us this far with his performance in the qualifiers.

“He is not the best, but I think he is someone we can rely on at the moment,’’ he added.

  • Russia 2018: We’ve sealed over $50m endorsement deals – Pinnick

Russia 2018: We’ve sealed over $50m endorsement deals – Pinnick

President of Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick has revealed that the Glass House has so far sealed contracts worth $50 million about N18 Billion in support of the Super Eagles campaign in this year’s World Cup in Russia.

The Eagles impressive qualification he said has turned the team into a beautiful bride with corporate bodies who believe in the team and the desire of the Nigeria Football federation to take the team and the game to the next level catching the sponsorship boat.

“You will agree with me that the Super Eagles have moved to the next level, and the synergy between the NFF and these corporate bodies that have identified with us will further push the team further,” he said

The FIFA and CAF Executive member said he does not regret saying that the Super Eagles can win the world cup insisting that it is achievable. Can we win the world Cup? Yes we can and I believe we can so I don’t regret saying so” he submitted

Pinnick who recalled with nostalgia that Friday March 16 marked exactly one year he and other positive looking members led a change campaign in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) said the same revolution is taking place in the repackaging of the national team all aimed at taking the game to the next level.

No effort he further said can be considered too much in supporting football in the country because of its impact on the people.

“When football match involving Nigeria is going on, all known vices practically cease and every focus will be on the game. That is how serious this game have become for Nigerians and this is why we have resolved to do everything possible to keep it that way,” he said

Pinnick re-echoed Super Eagles readiness to file out against Poland, Serbia, England and Czech Republic in high class friendly ties before heading to Russia.

  • Russia 2018: ‘British threats to boycott World Cup hurt ties, sport’

Russia’s foreign ministry said on Monday that British threats to boycott the 2018 FIFA World Cup would damage ties with Moscow and hurt world sport, Interfax news agency reported.

The British government it would respond decisively to any Russian government’s involvement, in the wake of the poisoning of a former Russian double agent in England.

Prime Minister Theresa May said earlier on Monday it was “highly likely” that Moscow was responsible for the attack.

Some British officials have suggested boycotting the Russia-hosted World Cup later this year in response.

“We want to emphasize once again: such provocative statements, which fan anti-Russian hysteria, only complicate relations between our countries and are blow to world sport,” Interfax quoted the ministry as saying in a statement.

  • Russia 2018: No time for too much talk, we’ll prove our worth on the pitch – Mikel Obi

Super Eagles’ captain Mikel Obi said on Wednesday that the Nigerian national team players have no need to say too much before Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zambia’s Chipolopolo.

The second leg game of Group B between Nigeria and Zambia for the 2018 World Cup qualifier is scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The outcome of the match would determine the chances of both teams towards qualification for the world cup in Russia.

Obi, said in Uyo at a reception held for the team by Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, that the players know what is at stake and ready to give their best.

“We know how important the match is; that is enough motivation to go all out and give our very best.

“There are several players in this team who have not played at the FIFA World Cup, they want to be there in Russia next year.

“The talking will be done on the pitch. I have no doubt we have the quality to achieve victory, but we will not make the mistake of underrating the Zambians,’’ he said.

Obi said that the team’s good performance in previous matches was achieved due to the focus, determination and massive support of all Nigerians.

“We believe the same indices are in place for Saturday against Zambia; we have played four matches in the campaign so far, but this one is the match.

“We are fully focused and ready. All we want is the usual support and encouragement by everyone involved, including the fans that will turn out at the match venue,’’ he said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Nigeria top Group B with 10 points from three wins and one draw.

Table-toppers Nigeria will qualify for a sixth FIFA World Cup appearance with the minimum victory on Saturday.

The match kicks off at 5pm.

Meanwhile, a statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF Communication Director, President of the Federation, President of NFF, Amaju Pinnick, has tasked the Super Eagles to be calm but clinical against their opponent.

“The tendency is for teams to get uptight and tensed for this kind of match.

“I have spoken to them and the approach should be to take full control from the beginning and take the chances that come without being too anxious.

“We defeated the African champions, Cameroon, by maintaining focus and with the team imposing its game and taking the chances that came their way.

“That should be the approach for Saturday.”

Zambia last victory against Nigeria in a competitive football match at senior level was 32 years ago.

The two teams have played 18 matches in all, with the Eagles winning seven and Zambia winning five, with six draws.

This is only the second FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the two teams.

The first leg of the 2018 world cup qualifiers was won by the Eagles 2-1 in Ndola last year.

  • Russia 2018: I’m yet to decide rerunning for presidency – Putin

President Vladimir Putin on Friday said he had yet to decide whether to run for re-election in 2018, but promised not to change the constitution to allow him to keep on running for Russia’s top political post indefinitely.

Putin, who has dominated Russia’s political landscape for the last 17 years and boasts strong popularity ratings, is widely expected to run for, and win, his fourth presidential term in March 2018.

He was speaking during a question-and-answer session with school children in the Black Sea resort of Sochi which analysts said was designed to widen his support base among young people.

“Do I need to continue my work in this capacity, I haven’t decided yet.

“I have not yet decided whether to leave my post as president or not. After I address this issue, I will think about what to do next,’’ he said.

When asked whether he had a presidential successor in mind, Putin did not name any names, saying that the choice would be up to the Russian people.

Putin served two presidential terms before stepping down in 2008 to become prime minister to avoid a constitutional bar on running for a third consecutive term.

He returned to the presidency in 2012 for another term and is legally entitled to serve for a fourth term as well.

Some political commentators have suggested, however, that Putin could change the constitution to allow him to stay on as president for a fifth term past 2024.

The Russian leader ruled that out on Friday.

“I had an opportunity, they even asked me to change the constitution. But I didn’t do it, and I don’t intend to do it in the future,’’ Putin said.

School children peppered Putin with a range of non-political questions as well, asking him what he did in his spare time and about his childhood memories.

They, however, frequently applauded his answers.

When asked what were the three most important values in life were, Putin said “life itself, love and freedom.”

When asked which events had made the greatest impression on him, he named the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, something he has previously called the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the twentieth century.

Putin, citing a heavy workload, said he did not really use the Internet but relied on advisers instead.
